problems with scans

This is, to the best of my investigative ability, two different scans each of the same image from two different versions of the same old book. Each book was perhaps stored under different conditions and "aged" or "ripened" differently. I have no way of knowing if the books had the same appearance when they started life, although, it seems safe to assume this.

I am having a hell of a time getting one scan to match the other. I inspired myself with this when I recognized one color source in one image from (believe this or not) my experience with making jelly and what a raised acidity level can do to the color of that juice.

I think that your renovation is a little too dark. I actually successfully maintained a coffee plant from flower through bean within my living environment and the leaves are dark and blueish green but not that dark and not that blue and check out that other scan -- much higher quality but lower resolution. Those colors seem faded, except that they are evenly faded which for me, challenges the idea that they are faded at all.

I realize that you have since this renovation moved along to sound and I also realize that what I have written is more honest than ass-kissing. All that being said, perhaps you could spend some time describing your thoughts and experiences renovating these color images in the case that I might get more clues as to how to make these images here appear more like the original did so many years ago.

Thanks for pointing out the problem with my image (that little diagram 10); the same problem existed for the diagrams 7 and 3.

I am still curious about your thoughts about the color correction and ways that this might be accomplished more logically and accurately. Working through problems like this which time, antiquated techniques and storage issues has imposed upon images -- competition is a method in which information can be discovered and exchanged, but simple communication of experiences is also a method for this and less murky in situations where the reason for competition is not so logical.

Another question I have is of confidence. I am very much not confident that my color adjustments are either the best that can be obtained now or the best that can be obtained later. A really good example of what I am saying is this: http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=35906 This is the reason I always make certain that the original is available here.

The only claim that I feel I can make and I try to do this before uploading is that my improvements to the original are improvements over what is available now. <-- This is my only confidence upon upload. I have made a new section about some problems with the template, on the talk page. Also, something I didn't mention there. There's a misspelling for Featured sounds:

"This is a featured sound on English Wikipedia and is considered one of the finest soundss."

Also even if it is a featured sound, ennom still only takes in consideration Featured pictures. It should be made to first verify what the value of enwiki is first, and then direct to either Featured picture or Featured sound.

Thanks Adam.... Over the holidays I found that a relative has The Divine Comedy (in english???) and El Quijote, illustrated by Doré. Quality is actually pretty good. Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

That every one in the corporate world is beautiful is an interesting way that they write or show themselves. That not so beautiful people have ideas and accomplishments could actually be a fact <-- this has not been dis-proven effectively to me.

I just say this here and now because of the image of Richard Stallman at English wikipedia should be managed by the machine there more gracefully and I am blocked there.

Please consider causing your machine to be more respectful there and with the person in that image.

• Well, it looks like the metadata (for all 500 pictures!) needs to be hand-collected for the program to work properly. I've asked Bryan about the best format to collect it, as it seems different to the wiki. As I've had a look at some of the pictures (only a dozen or so, until I find out the best format), I've decided to add the 2008 POTY candidate template to each page so it doesn't need to be done later. Then at the end, only the finalist templates will need to be updated. Phew! Could you help to identify the author of this engraving?

Hi, seeing your professment of expertise with engravings, I am wondering if you could help me with this piece. It comes from the Ann Ronan Picture Library and is listed as c. 1880 but of an unknown authorship. There is a signature ("WP") at the bottom left, but I have no idea who that can be (after much searching through Google).

I view knowledge of the author as the easier way to mark this engraving as in the public domain. However, knowledge of its first publishing would also be good. Can you advise me on this? Hawaii FP

I've been thinking about this, and I dont' think I really said enough at the time.

I'm really sorry that your FP was missed out at first, and glad we could fix it before the competition started. I'm not sure how it got left out, but please believe me that it was almost certainly accidental: We had to sort 500 featured pictures into categories, and then there was a period where we were refining the groups by moving things around between them. What probably happened was that it was being moved from one to the other, and the removal from the one went through, but an unnoticed edit conflict or loss of concentration meant that it wasn't properly put into the new category.

foul and fair

"My kingdom for two sisters!" <-- wrong play, and I only recently learned that this mangled quote is from the most quotable of all Bill. That being said, had I had different parents or even figured out a way to maintain access to my two stepsisters or had made more lasting friendships with the women I actually thought I was making this type of lasting friendship with, I would certainly encourage them to log in and exchange a vote for your image for a dramatic pre-death "Out Damn Spot" soliloquy from what is at least to me the most obvious and dramatic of 'pedia characters available.

Alas, there is just me. The Macbeth I saw in Stratford, Ontario at Festival was almost as good as the high school performance of it I saw in 1999 in very humble Michigan.

I guess I can count myself among the lucky in that I had a teacher who really loved Bills plays and was able to communicate this love to (at the very least) me. My attempt to get a self-proclaimed and intellectually pampered genius to hear the beauty of the words and understand the reliability of this timeless dramatic structure that really works in a pleasing way was futile.

I looked quickly at this image and I think that in restoring it, you did not spend much time "out damn spot"ing. Oh, and I have no idea if this applies here, but feel free to use this if necessary if the dramatic ending I am asking for is to be forth coming -- I learned that there was a rumor running about the usual Shakespearean performers that the role of Lady MacBeth could not possibly be played by a woman....

Please note, I was never anxious to be known as a good politicer. That being said, do you think that the 'pedia A-List could provide an out damn spot pre-death soliloquy in exchange for my support?

an overdue thanks

I don't know if you had anything to do with the nomination of that image of Richard Stallman disappearing at English wikipedia -- it is here I made the request though so it is here that I will leave the thank you.

I have made fun of Richard Stallman and I intend to make fun of Richard Stallman again some day. I use the software that his license gave birth to and I have been an advocate this same software. GFDL seems to have been inspired by that license which was supposed to be for software and allowing people who purchased computers to use them. If one day, Richard Stallman ever wants to make fun of me, that will be a good day to me.

When you get some experience with the software, I can perhaps show you when and where it is fitting to make fun of that license author and would be glad for the opportunity. In the meanwhile, feel free to nominate images of the Adobe CEO or Bill Gates or whoever authored the licenses that you bought. As to POTY, while most of the necessary checking is done, I found a problem: Commons:Picture of the Year/2008/Galleries/Plants and Fungi is "Total: 40 (4 awards in this class)", but both of the 4th and the 5th have 81 votes. Your deletion of the Quran

Adam, I find it hard to understand why you deleted 113 audio files only an hour after the deletion request was filed. What was the hurry in deleting someone's effort? The uploader had not even been properly notified by the nominator. Scanning question

Hi Adam - I wanted to ask your advice about a scanning question. I'm already scanning at 600 dpi and doing the crop/rotate and applying a non-linear filter prior to upload. What I wonder is, does it make sense to also scan and upload the archival copy of images at 48 bit color? This seems like it could be helpful if levels need to be adjusted later, but I'm not sure if the book itself is printed at high enough quality for that to matter. I did some thinking about this - I'm now producing 48-bit 600 dpi raw TIFF scans with no postprocessing by the scanning software for archiving. However, these files are pretty big (130MB for a full page photo, and this is not a large book). I think there's a 100 MB limit on uploads. Encoding as PNG is useless because half-toning defeats PNG compression. What should I do? Dcoetzee (talk) 12:42, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

Hmm. I presume you've tried PNGs, and they didn't shrink under 100 megs?

If so: these aren't coloured engravings, right? If so, the best choice is probably to reduce to 24-bit colour, which should be ample data. Adam Cuerden (talk) 14:10, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

They don't, because they're 600 dpi and the resolution is fine enough that the half-toning renders the PNG compression ineffective. I can cut it down to 24-bit if I have to, but I'm hesitant to do so since the raw scan doesn't even use the full value range. Also, is my assumption correct that it's better for color management to save a raw scan and attach the scanner's ICC profile than to convert to sRGB? Sure. I have uploaded to my webserver a 103 MB 600 dpi 48-bit color raw scan converted to PNG and assigned the scanner's ICC color profile (warning, save and open if you want to see the colors correctly). This is the same source used for File:Elizabeth I in coronation robes.png. The processed file is much smaller because it's 24-bit color and because the blur introduced to mitigate half-toning also improved compression. Although in this book full page images come quite close to 100MB, in my larger books they will be bigger. Dcoetzee (talk) 15:27, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

I did some more thinking about this and I think probably the best thing to do is downscale the raw scans to say 300 dpi. These images are probably printed at 300 dpi in the first place, so it's kind of silly to go above that. I don't think there's any processing I can do at 600 dpi that I can't do at 300 dpi anyway. Sorry, I hate to be a pain, but does the French version say the première date is 5 Décembre 1885? The première was actually on November 30th, but engravings take a while to make, so Victorian newspapers were generally about a week behind the events they cover. The Englih version could probably stand to be a little clearer.
