First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Hi. I have noticed, that the description next to the picture of the document was not correct. As I have read from the file it is not the foundation act. With my basic latin I found that it is the document from 1146 issued by Bertrand. I have changed description accordingly to the [1]. Best regards :) Navportus

Thx. The document is located in Ljubljana City hall; I never took the trouble to read the narrow writing, perhaps I'll go check it again (to se what is written on the description paper below the frame), or even make a better photo.

Živjo. Sprevidela sem, da je bolje da tukaj nadaljujem pogovor s teboj. Prvo me zanima, s kako opremo fotografiraš in kaj si uporabljal pred tem. malo sem namreč gledala tvoje fotografije, ene so dobre, druge pa od tega izstopajo po kvaliteti - sklepala sem, da morda zato, ker nisi imel ustrezne tehnologije zanje. mi lahko odgovoriš? --Inki 12:54, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(Canon IXY, japonska verzija IXUS-a) prejšnji teden se mi je pokvaril, pa sem si kupil IXUS 75. Sicer ne maram digitalne fotografije, vendar sem sklenil, da bom tole našo Dolino Šentflorjansko opremil s slikami, kolikor se da. S trotelzihri je stvar najbolj praktična. Topogledno delam informativne in ne umetniške slike, kakšni malo pomagam s PhotoShopom, drugim spet ne.

Sicer sem začel fotografirati v konec 80.-ih in za analogne fotografije še vedno uporabljam tudi svoj prvi foteljc, Canon AE-1 (seveda z vsemi objektivi vred), imel sem tudi Yashico-široki format, delal sem ČB slike, ker so bili ČB filmi skoraj zastonj (ORWO) in sem seveda razvijal v lastni temnici. Aha, imam še en popolnoma genialen foteljc: Kodak iz ca. 1950, na "harmoniko" se ven objektiv potegne. Vendar je mehanika potrebuje popravila.

Zakaj se kvaliteta na wp. naloženih slik tako razlikuje: ker jih mnogo naredim zares na hitro, tudi v slabih pogojih - in predvsem zato, ker s to mašinerijo (japanci rade za nas) nimam tolikšnega užitka (t.j. odnosa) fotografirati, kot ročno. Užitek mi je večinoma predvsem v faktični, ne pa toliko v estetski informaciji, ki jo nosi slika za wp. lp., Ziga 13:09, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Žiga, en popravek, pred gradom na Mirni ni ribnik ampak bazen, bolj take domače izdelave, že zelo star. Noter namreč do zdaj še nisem videla ribe in stvar je bila že od nekdaj za kopanje namenjena-:)--Inki 16:04, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, pri hiši pod gradom je res en bazenček, čisto majhen, tole pa je prav lepo zajezen potok v velikosti 50*50m (tako kot sedmo Triglavsko jezero (Črno jezero, torej) - od oka. Mislim, da obstaja v enciklopediji slovenskih jezer. Ziga 12:17, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, I didn' notice that I uploaded 2 pics. One pic must be deleted, but it would better be Image:Vurnik-Ljubljana.JPG to be deleted. Reason:

  • Ivan Vurnik is the architect
  • Zadruzna Gospodarska Banka was the original title of the building; so it is a better title than the other
    • pics are equal (=same pic)

Hello,

I found several typos in that file - Rachmaninoff is misspelled, and the second excerpt should be in D major. So it should read A - F# - G - A - D.

Also, I don't mean to be nitpicky, but the spacing between the fourth and fifth notes of both excerpts is a bit off.

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Is this castle one that was owned by Count John Joseph Wenceslaus Radetzky of Radetz  ? In 1798 married Countess Francisca von Strassoldo Grafenberg, from Trzic. He was my great great great grandfather. I am curious about the history and perhaps previous ancestors to him.

A little bit about this castle is written here, but it doesn't have whole article yet (in Slovene). Unfortuanately, I only took the picture and am not aware of historical background. There must be literature in Slovene language, though; try "castles of slovenia" or sl:Seznam plemiških rodbin na Slovenskem (list of nobles in Slovenia).

Aha, I checked: owner was sl:Josef Radetzky, which is the same as you stated. The guy who got the famous Strauss march.

While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.
