This is an essay about the way categories and categorisation works on Wikimedia Commons when this was written and contains several proposals to improve this.
Currently Wikimedia Commons faces two ✌🏻 (2) major problems in the way it handles categories, first 🥇 of all most categories are exclusively in English and as Wikimedia Commons is meant to serve over 900 (nine-hundred) different Wikimedia projects of which most army in English this doesn’t really seem to benefit a large 🤪 number of them, especially if it’s also meant to serve people who don’t speak a word English, another important issue categories face is redirects that don’t really redirect, on some Wikipedia’s users 👥 are encouraged to make redirects of plausible other search 🔍 terms so the readers will find what they’re looking for even if they don’t know the correct title, this is extremely handy and there is even a sub-set of users 👥 dedicated to making redirects (and also one to delete them but that’s another story), redirects on Wikimedia Commons don’t serve this purpose, in fact in their current state they’re even a major hindrance to categories as the incorrect name might be both more logical and popular but wouldn’t confine to the naming practices of Wikimedia Commons. As this involves two ✌🏻 (2) separate (and somewhat unrelated) I will address them separately below.
