Former cities in the top 100.[edit]

A user with a problematic history of unfriendly attitude (funny to see how things repeat themselves and how some people seems unable to change) refuses any change to the template even if I explained my changes and he keeps on reverting like if this page was his own. I added some cities not because I liked them but by following a criterion "that were in the top 100 and are now over 100 000". When you look at categories like "1890 in the US by city", it would be pertinent to see the links to Rochester, Cambridge or Syracuse (that may have such categories) instead of having a template linking to Long Beach that wasn't even a municipality then. This template as it is now would have a very limited interest for any category before the 1950s when the Sun Belt arose. The way I propose it makes it worth until the first census of 1790. I understand the criterion more than 100 000 could be discussed. I chose this limit as it is the limit used nowadays in the list of 333 cities and it really narrows the number of cities added to a few ones. These cities may be out of the top 100 nowadays but they are the ones which will probably have categories in the 19th century or in the beginning of the 20th century. As we are on a wiki and not on his personal page, I'm willing to hear other people's opinion about this change. Birdie (talk) 09:11, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have moved this discussion to Commons:Categories for discussion/2024/05/Template:US cities in order to give it wider attention and faster turnaround time. -- DanielPenfield (talk) 16:33, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
