English: The Heritage Routemasters are the Routemaster buses used on the Transport for London Routemaster heritage services.

Fleet[edit]

The Heritage Routemaster buses are all of the shorter, original RM class of Routemaster. They sound and look slightly different to 'classic' RMs, having all come from the Marshall rebuild pool. There are 20 buses in the fleet (based on a requirement for 5 buses on each route at peak time, plus 3 maintenance spares, and 2 additional long term spares).

Liveries[edit]

Standard livery[edit]

The standard Heritage Routemaster livery is based on the London Transport livery worn by Routemasters when they were first introduced in the 1950s and on into the early 1960s:

  • LT red base
  • Cream cant-rail band (replaced by grey bands from 1965 onwards)
  • London Transport fleetnames in black outlined gold (nearside & offside) - these were changed to LONDON TRANSPORT without black outline in 1969
  • Fleetnumbers in black outlined gold, accompanied by a 'Routemaster' label (nearside on the engine bonnet & offside under the drivers cab window) - the Routemaster label was phased out after 1964, fleetnumbers changed to plain white in 1974

White roundel livery[edit]

Four of the route 15 buses - RM652, RM1941, RM1968 & RM2060 - were later repainted into a later version of London Transport livery that Routemasters wore in the 1970s:

  • LT red base
  • White cant-rail
  • no fleetnames - just a plain white London Transport roundel (nearside & offside)
  • fleetnumbers in solid white

Special liveries - SRM3 & RM1933[edit]

Two Heritage Routemasters wear special commemorative liveries

  • SRM3 has worn two different silver schemes (the first applied before heritage services began)
  • RM1933 originally entered service in standard livery, but has since worn two special liveries - an Indian Red/Platinum scheme, and then a red/white/black/silver scheme.

Before repainting[edit]

All of the route 15 buses entered service in the standard livery, but some buses on route 9 were not repainted in time, leading to some odd hybrid versions of old/new livery.

Operator markings[edit]

A modern concession to the traditional liveries is the use of small logos to denote the private companies actually operating the buses (see Transport for London Routemaster heritage services#Operators). On the Heritage Routemasters they are quite small and unobtrusive, appearing only on the sides - each placed above the front lower deck window of the passenger cabin. As a legal requirement on all UK buses, the company name/address of the operator also appears on the nearside behind the front wheel (known as the legal lettering).

First/Transit[edit]

The logo on First/Tower Transit buses has always been a gold version of their standard London bus logos. First used their plc company name on legal lettering, rather than Centrewest.

Stagecoach/East London Bus Group[edit]

Like First, Stagecoach adopted a gold version of their corporate logo, which changed to a gold version of the ELBG East London after the sale, before returning
