[edit]DescriptionRobert Barker's Panorama of London in November 1790, taken from the roof of Albion Mills, Southwark.ogv |
English: A complete annotated video tour of Robert Barker's November 1790 Panorama of London from the Roof of Albion Mills, located on the Southwark side of Blackfriars Bridge. The original drawings were taken on the spot by his son Henry Aston Barker in September 1790 and The completed panorama opened to the public in June 1791.
The full panorama is shown below the viewing window, with a red outline indicating the area shown in the viewing window. This version combines six derivative etchings (each 22"x17") etched by Henry Aston Barker and aqua-tinted by Frederick Birnie. Thanks to @YaleBritishArt for generously sharing the etchings. Source: https://collections.britishart.yale.edu/vufind/Record/2035122 The annotations are mostly from a contemporary key to the panorama or were adapted from Ralph Hyde and Peter Jackson's facsimile publication -https://graphicarts.princeton.edu/2019/02/05/a-key-to-the-panorama-of-london-from-albion-mills/ - https://lccn.loc.gov/91196794). Thanks @tamulibraries for providing access to the Jackson key. There are many sources of information on the Barker panoramas, but the following two sources are good choices: 1.
