Gimme five!

There was a similar topic back in 2014, called A bunch of stuff. I really like the results from that challenge and think it is long enough ago that we could do something like this again. Focusing on the uneven number five seems a good idea to me, so photographers also can think about playing with symmetry.

Loneliness (lonely people)

The idea is : a moment of loneliness or a life of loneliness.

  •  Comment - None of these photos makes me think of "loneliness". Loneliness is unpleasant, but these photos are all of people who are alone while they are working or doing something interesting. Hedge

Fence

How about fences? Fences are easy to photograph, and are found in every part of the world. Wheather used as a safety instrument or as architechtural detail, fences have aesthetic elements and show great depth of field when photographed. Village

Most of the big cities are well documented on commons, but there will probably always be some villages that lack pictures. Let's do a challenge that helps get a few more images of villages, so the more rural areas are better represented on commons! --Kritzolina (talk) 15:31, 30 August 2021 (UTC)

Refraction

Dance

Dancing is done in all cultures, there are traditional dances as well as modern dances, very formal and also informal ones, group dances, couple dances, ballet - dance can tell stories and express emotions like no other human acitivity can. Cruise ship/Passenger vessel

There are already plenty of passenger and cruise ship photos on Commons that have a documentary value. But as an incentive for more beautiful and impressive images, I would like to propose a photo challenge on this topic. In view of the climate situation, the photos can also have a critical aspect. Passengers, people in general are allowed as long as the official guidelines are followed. Critical photos are very welcome, most especially regarding the negative impact on the Earth's climate.     Thanks, Radomianin! Sorry, I didn't do a very good job of balancing positive an d critical examples; your OPdid make it clear that content was not required to have a given editorial slant. So details and sociology-like pictures (as long as they follow guidelines) would be in-scope, but cold-ironing infrastructure would be a stretch and smog would be well out-of-scope? Brianjd Sorry about being so north hemisphere centric, but every challenge will be a bad fit for someone. Current Commons:Photo challenge/2023 - January - Ice is at a time when the only ice you can find is probably in your freezer. Similarly with drone photography or macro photography - very few people have such specialized equipment. Last May we had a challenge about "Asian gardens" and I am not aware of any around where I live. Baby farm animals will also be a bad fit for me as I live in a city. With every challenge there are people who will have more chances for a winning shot than others and there is not much we can do about it. We hope that people who happen to be more disadvantages in a given month will get creative with interpretation of the rules or dig through their archives. --Jarekt (talk) 03:07, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
@Jarekt When I saw the ice challenge, I was thinking of an indoor ice display I went to a while ago (but I probably don’t have any photos from there worth looking at, let alone entering into a challenge) – I missed the fact that was also northern hemisphere centric. So maybe that’s a good argument for having this challenge six months later (September or October 2023). (Actually, in my city, we have neither snow nor baby animals at any time of year, though we sometimes have hail. So what would I know?)

This is not strictly a seasonal challenge, there are farm animals born almost all around the year - even if the majority of the more "interesting" animals (lambs, calfs) are either born in spring or in winter, so they are still looking young in spring. But chicks of differen domestic birds hatch almost at all times of the year. I would oppose any clear seasonal challenge, but for other challenges, I think the way to go is to always find ways that allow participation for as many contributors as possible. As the person who suggested the ice challenge, I included images of icecubes and artificial ice in rinks for that reason - not only because of the people in the Northern hemisphere, but because of all the countries where natural ice is not a normal thing and (if at all) only to be found in high mountains. Here we also see baby chickens included as well as piglets that also are born at least twice a year. And Jarekt always takes good care to post such a more limited challenge for some users alongside one that allows wide participation - like the hospital challenge along with the ice challenge - which by the way did not allow me to contibute so far, because we had an extremely mild January in Germany. --Kritzolina (talk) 07:44, 30 January 2023 (UTC)
