Automatically add same Category or Title to a set

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; rv:7.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/7.0.1

When uploading a full set of images (e.g. illustrations from a djvu book for WS illustration), it would be very nice to be proposed to use the same Title and/or Categories... generally, when I upload 10 of 50 images at the same time, it is because they belong together :) Hsarrazin (talk) 09:35, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

+1. Same here, I also felt this feature is missing. I often opload a batch of 10 or more images that belongs to the same category. Dodoïste (talk) 12:10, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, having some basic batch application of metadata is definitely in the development wishlist/backlog.--Eloquence (talk) 18:24, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

Placing unrelated Flickrreview tag

I don't know whether this is related to the new upload wizard or an older one - I have seen several images stated to be uploaded via upload wizard with a {{Flickrreview}} tag despite not sourced to Flickr. Happens very often if the {{PD-USGov}} license tag is used. A lot of examples could be found in the robot contributions (those with no_flickr_link)--Denniss (talk) 16:04, 21 October 2011 (UTC)

Bump. Some examples from the last 24 hours: 1, 2, 3. Any idea what happened there? --Denniss (talk) 04:08, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
Another, more minor, error: Flickrreview template is based above the license template, it should be placed below the license template. See [1] and the text in the template. --Denniss (talk) 01:55, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

Unknown error: "unknown-warning"

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; en; rv:1.9.0.19) Gecko/2011091218 Camino/2.0.9 (like Firefox/3.0.19)

I was unable to upload these three images with the Upload Wizard, but they worked fine when I uploaded them individually with the basic upload form.

Each one failed in the "Upload" step with 'Unknown error: "unknown-warning"'. I tried it repeatedly, but was never able to get beyond the initial step. Dominic (talk) 19:22, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

The really annoing behavior of new wizzard is blocking upload a the very last stage due to wrong name of the file if one forgets to change the name of file from the original from camera. The wizzard sends warning without any "rescue" option. I think it should rather suggest the change of the name of the file and let do it without forcing to start process of upload again from the very beginning. It would be good also to have a possibility to come back to the previous steps without loosing all work of filling forms... Polimerek (talk) 21:22, 8 November 2011 (UTC)

It should actually block the filename in the "Describe" step and force you to change it there, not in the very last step. If it's doing it in the last step, something is going wrong. Could you send me the file you tried to upload with its original name to erik at wikimedia dot org?--Eloquence (talk) 23:03, 8 November 2011 (UTC)

location

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.0; WOW64; rv:7.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/7.0.1

A more direct link towards a location tool such as GeoLocator would be a good idea. Categorization should be more or less mandatory. Besides, this tool is exellent and far more streamlined than the precedent. Many thanks. Berru (talk) 20:28, 9 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the feedback, Berru! The next version of Upload Wizard (testable here) will automatically extract geo-information and add it to the image using the appropriate template. It will also provide geo coordinate input boxes. However, it will not yet provide a geo-coordinate entry widget to simplify manual tagging. Specs for such a widget exist, based on an assessment of existing tools like GeoLocator: mw:UploadWizard/Geolocation. Your comments would be welcome on the talk page there.
There are problems with making categories mandatory due to 1) the complexity of the categorization process due to the nested structure of the category tree, 2) the fact that categories largely require command of the English language. As such, the decision in Upload Wizard has been to treat categories as an interaction that more advanced users are likely to undertake, either during the upload process or on behalf of other users following the upload. This is a larger strategic issue that's being discussed further here: Commons talk:Upload Wizard--Eloquence (talk) 04:08, 10 November 2011 (UTC)

New failure of upload wizard

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; rv:7.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/7.0.1

Upload wizard yesterday & today fails on files OK for old form. It churns for quite a while (either one or two files in upload) and then both fail with message "Internal error: Missing parameters on request". Dcrjsr (talk) 15:01, 11 November 2011 (UTC)

"Internal error: Missing parameters on request"

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:7.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/7.0.1

The Upload Wizard consistently returns this error message after trying to upload a designated file. Earlier today the wizard worked fine, on the same computer working from the same folder of image files. I tried restarting my browser: no luck. Tried logging out, then in: still no luck. The "Upload file" page works, but it's not as easy to use as the wizard, so I hope you can fix the latter soon. Thanks! Dickstracke (talk) 23:56, 11 November 2011 (UTC)

I'm seeing this too now, for the first time. We'll look into it.--Eloquence (talk) 00:26, 12 November 2011 (UTC)
I'm experiencing the same problem, with the same message. I hope the issue will be fixed as soon as possible, especially because the "old form" is really needlessly hard to use. If it may help narrow it down, I was working on eight files, and only three were successfully uploaded, all those under 1 Megabyte, those bigger than that received that error message. addition by Zidanie5 (talk) 01:12, 12 November 2011 (UTC) Zidanie5 (talk) 00:58, 12 November 2011 (UTC)
It looks like the chunked upload support is broken. We'll see if we can get this fixed ASAP, or we'll have to disable Upload Wizard.--Eloquence (talk) 01:54, 12 November 2011 (UTC)
The strange thing is that this issue didn't seem to materialize post-deployment (I ran a user test immediately post-deployment, which included a few large files), and quite a few large files have been uploaded with UW since the deployment. With that said, I've looked at the deployed code base and there does appear to be a versioning conflict between the deployed version of the API and what Upload Wizard expects. I've requested that UW be temporarily disabled until this can be fully examined and resolved.--Eloquence (talk) 02:12, 12 November 2011 (UTC)
We've temporarily disabled multi-file selection and chunked uploading until the required code can be cleanly merged and deployed. Single-file uploads and manually selected multiple files should work again now.--Eloquence (talk) 06:12, 12 November 2011 (UTC)
Thank you, I've tried and single files uploads work now, great job! Zidanie5 (talk) 06:15, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

The historical sanctuary Peru is a great country not only for their food because it has a lot of beautiful places; however, there is one famous place which is located in Cuzco that is important to remember. Machu Picchu is one of the seven wonder of the world because it was chosen one of this in 2007 by the New Open World Corporation. Also it is important to know that Machu Picchu is a historical sanctuary for many reasons. First of all, according to Professor Hiram Bingham who discovered Machu Picchu in 1911.He stated that “the Incas were good engineers”, so he made an important research about this historical sanctuary in order to demonstrate the carefully planned and the building infrastructure that it contains.(Bingham,1913) Second of all, the reason that the Peruvian Government allows to the writers to get information about the Andean Community in 1994 is because they wanted to know the various infrastructure components that it contains.(wright,1996) In conclusion, Machu Picchu is considering one of the seven wonder of the world because it is a historical sanctuary that has many good building infrastructures. Also it is important to know that the Peruvian Government permit to the writers to get information about all of this was in order to show the value that this sanctuary has.

I've uploaded a file (File:Desargues_on_Parallels.svg‎) with this wizzard. My descriptions in English and German language vanished during upload. That is: "English:" and "German:" as titles are there, but my text is away. What went wrong? 95.208.215.15 17:21, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

Yikes. Can you reproduce it, i.e. do you get the same result when you upload another file with multiple languages/descriptions? I can't reproduce this issue.--Eloquence (talk) 02:13, 28 October 2011 (UTC)
Problem was not in Upload wizzard, but in the use of || charachters in the text. I replaced them by <nowiki>||</nowiki> and now the text appears. HenkvD (talk) 08:06, 28 October 2011 (UTC)
Well, I'd say that is a problem with the wizard. A wizard worth his wand should easily be able to detect the presence of pipe characters outside of curly braces and escape them automatically. Novice uploaders probably don't realise that the description they enter will be used as a parameter to a template and that using pipe characters will break the template because pipe characters are Mediawiki's way of delimiting template parameters. Probably. :) LX (talk, contribs) 20:06, 28 October 2011 (UTC)
I don't think we can expect any program to detect such conflicts. What if I want to add description ([[Link|description]])? It would result in [[Link|description]]. HenkvD (talk) 21:33, 28 October 2011 (UTC)
Naturally, it should also parse for square brackets. None of this is computational rocket science. If the wiki software can parse wiki code, so can the upload form. LX (talk, contribs) 23:10, 28 October 2011 (UTC)
That's a lot harder to do than you think. The MediaWiki "parser" is basically a zillion line-oriented regular expressions. This is one reason why we are rewriting it from scratch, because we also want parsers that can do things like escaping content for use elsewhere. That said, the OP has a point, I just don't know how much effort to expend on it. NeilK (talk) 19:47, 15 November 2011 (UTC)

If you're already in Firebug, you're not far from helping fix issues -- patches welcome. ;-)
With that said, this does look like a separate issue and a separate error. Did you trigger a known issue? What file were you trying to upload?--Eloquence (talk) 02:19, 12 November 2011 (UTC)
Okay, made a new section. Don't remember the file. IIRC it occurred at several files. What I want to message you: kill the "unknown" error but show the user which error occurred. "Unknown" is not helpful.
"Did you trigger a known issue?" - not to my knowledge. And if I wouldn't report it here, huh?
No I will not help to debug the mis-designed UW more than I already do. ;-) UW is WMF's task. --Saibo (Δ) 02:32, 14 November 2011 (UTC)

One different thing - your name is already taken in the English Wikipedia by another person - that is the reason why you are not logged in automatically at Wikipedia and Commons if you sign in once. I suggest you to choose another username. Check here if there are already users who use a name.
You do not need to upload the image again at Wikipedia - but you need to to put it in the article. Click here to edit the article. See at fr:Aide:Insérer_une_image#Ins.C3.A9rer_une_image_dans_une_page for what to insert. In principle you need to insert text like in this example: [[File:Seswaa.jpg|thumb|Marmites]]. When I add categories to an image that I upload and I submit the image, the image description page sometimes displays red-link categories, as if a category that the UploadWizard detected as existing doesn't actually exist. For example, when I was uploading File:Occupy Portland map.png, the UploadWizard said that there is a category called Category:Street maps of cities, but it doesn't really exist on Commons. The last resort case for licensing is obscure and confusing

User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; rv:8.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/8.0.1

First off -- awesome work. I haven't seen this wizard before, and in general, it's great.

However, the "none of the above" case for licensing is confusing. Even though I've uploaded images before, I had no clue whatsoever what was intended by "The license is described by the following wikitext", and my first attempts to satisfy this was like playing 20 Questions with a sadist.

"Nope, that wasn't valid wikitext. Sorry, no hints as to what 'valid wikitext' is!"

Also, once the "does not seem to be valid wikitext message" appears, it does not clear when you change the content, unless you select another license type and then re-select this option.

I did finally find Commons:Copyright tags, which got me most of the way there, but I also had to figure out that I needed to enter something that looked like

This work is in the public domain in the United States because it was published in the United States between 1929 and 1977, inclusive, without a copyright notice. For further explanation, see Commons:Hirtle chart as well as a detailed definition of "publication" for public art. Note that it may still be copyrighted in jurisdictions that do not apply the rule of the shorter term for US works (depending on the date of the author's death), such as Canada (50 p.m.a.), Mainland China (50 p.m.a., not Hong Kong or Macao), Germany (70 p.m.a.), Mexico (100 p.m.a.), Switzerland (70 p.m.a.), and other countries with individual treaties.

NapoliRoma (talk) 15:38, 28 November 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for your praise. You're right, the custom license handling is not very intuitive. It's definitely meant to be an advanced user feature, but all the more reason to make it clear how it works in terms advanced users can understand.
I've tried to make this a bit clearer as part of this commit. If it sticks, the text which currently says "The license is described by the following wikitext" will be changed to "The license is described by the following wikitext (must contain a valid copyright tag)". The wikitext, BTW, can also include any other text, as long as a valid copyright tag is present.
The parsing and error handling for custom licenses is still in need of some further optimization.--Eloquence (talk) 22:11, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

I uploaded one of my own photographs years ago and it was deleted by some fool who got the power to delete things. I tried again to upload the same photograph (after a delay of years), but Wikipedia refuses to upload it because of the earlier deletion. I select all the options and affirm it's my photograph and huff and puff, but it won't upload. Too bad. ArdenHathaway (talk) 23:43, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

This is not Wikipedia, this is Wikimedia Commons.
Deletion alone shouldn’t make it impossible to upload the same file. What is the file name you are trying to use, and what was the original name?
--AVRS (talk) 11:39, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
AVRS, that may be a bug known since at least 3 months: bugzilla:30643. Although I wonder that UW also takes files uploaded with other upload tools into account.
ArdenHathaway, with your account ArdenHathaway you havn't uploaded files here in the past. Could you please mention the file names of the deleted files? Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 12:31, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
As Saibo mentions, according to your log, you haven't uploaded any files, and none have been deleted. You also have no messages on your user talk page relating to deleted files, which you would normally have if any of your uploads had been deleted. Are you sure you uploaded the file to this project (Commons is not Wikipedia) under this username?
There are many reasons a file may have be deleted. You may have forgotten to provide some necessary information about the file, it may have been found to have been previously published elsewhere and therefore believed to have been a copyright violation, or it may have been a photo of someone else's work. It's a little hard to know since I can't find any traces of the file you say that you've uploaded, though. In any case, you should not recreate the file yourself. Instead, you should request undeletion if you can point out what file it is about. LX (talk, contribs) 13:41, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
Nonetheless, uploaders should be technically able to upload a file that's been previously deleted, and the current behavior (which prevents this entirely) is a bug.--Eloquence (talk) 15:27, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
