Thanks![edit]

Thanks again for uploading so many great pictures! They are a great contribution to Commons and Wikipedia. --Another Believer (talk) 22:21, 11 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

File:McCoy_Park_(Portland,_Oregon).jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

File:North Santaim River at Niagara County Park.jpg[edit]

Hi Jsayre64; Please take care to follow the enumerated rename criteria of Commons:FR#What_files_should_be_renamed.3F.[1] Also, please avoid introducing obvious errors in file names (e.g. wrong proper noun). It is Santiam not"Santaim". Kindly note that it is "best to leave all files with generally valid names at their locations, even if slightly better names may exist." Thank you, Walter Siegmund (talk) 19:16, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about my spelling error. I'm not a filemover, so I've tagged the image for renaming once again. The reason I requested a move was because the original filename was misleading; it said "File:Santiam River 06268.JPG" although according to your description, the photo is of the North Santiam River. Thank you for showing me the file-moving criteria, however. I tend to request moves a lot, so that will be useful in the future. Jsayre64 (talk) 03:23, 13 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
"North Santiam River" may be a somewhat better title than "Santiam River" but I probably wouldn't bother to rename it. As one of two major tributaries, the North Santiam River is closely associated with the Santiam River. I'm happy to help. Best wishes, Walter Siegmund (talk) 03:58, 13 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. INeverCry

Identity[edit]

You were right in the first place :-) File:Calocedrus decurrens, young specimen, OR.jpg is Calocedrus decurrens not Thuja plicata; I've renamed it back to the original name (except ending .jpg rather than .JPG, as the file rename software won't allow cap "JPG") - MPF (talk) 13:24, 13 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@MPF: If you really think so. It looked more like incense cedar, but it was surrounded by western red cedar in an ideal western-red-cedar environment. Jsayre64 (talk) 15:10, 13 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yep; it has the more open shoot structure of Incense-cedar. Western Redcedar has much more closely-spaced side shoot branching. Might be worth getting more pics of the other trees if you're in the area again. - MPF (talk) 15:30, 13 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
As an aside, Commons is in general still rather short of decent close-up pics of foliage / cones etc., of N American conifers in their native environment (why do people only ever take close-ups of dubious cultivated plants???) - the more you can get, the better :-) Some Lawson's Cypress and Brewer's Spruce would be particularly welcome! - MPF (talk) 15:44, 13 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I definitely enjoy photographing native tree species. I do need to get better at identifying them, which of course can be hard. I use a pretty ordinary camera, so it's hard to get good close-ups, but I've done some and I'll keep working at it. And I do have a Brewer's spruce photo, by the way. Jsayre64 (talk) 20:30, 13 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent pic :-) Any you can't identify, just add them to Category:Unidentified Cupressaceae / Category:Unidentified Pinaceae etc., and I'll see what I can make of them (I check those cats for new additions regularly) - MPF (talk) 15:51, 14 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks. I've put some of my mushroom photos in "unidentified" categories before. Jsayre64 (talk) 03:26, 15 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jsayre64, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Location?[edit]

Hi Jsayre64 - any chance you could add at least approximate coordinates to File:McKenzie River island.JPG, please? Thanks! - MPF (talk) 22:22, 24 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Jsayre64 (talk) 04:31, 25 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent, thanks! - MPF (talk) 20:29, 30 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

2022 Picture of the Year: Saint John Church of Sohrol in Iran.

Read this message in your language

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
