Could someone help to create and upload an image?

Hello people on Help desk! Is there a particular way to ask on commons( or is it even here?) if some experienced User could help to create and upload a file available from the internet here on commons? Since im not too experienced with wiki commons and the licences etc. i would like to ask, thanks!--Joobo (talk) 20:53, 28 February 2017 (UTC)

The first steps guide explains the basics of uploading files, including licensing. Files found on the Internet don't usually have a suitable license. If you have a particular file in mind, post a link to the page at which you found it and we can take a look at the licensing. --rimshottalk 22:16, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for the response. It is basically about a map excerpt of London of this map. https://andrewwhitby.com/2013/09/04/uk-ethnicity-map/ here. --Joobo (talk) 11:46, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
That case looks a bit complicated. It's an OpenStreetMap base map (licensed as CC BY-SA 2.0), apparently augmented in some way by Stamen Design (license unknown) and filled with data by Andrew Whitby (licensed as CC BY 3.0). The SA part in that license means "Share-Alike", so both Stamen Design and Andrew Whitby should have used the same license as OpenStreetMap did. They didn't, so unfortunately the license situation is unclear. --rimshottalk 22:00, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
P.S. If Stamen Design used the OpenStreetMap data directly to generate their own tiles, a different license applies. I couldn't find any information on whether they did and what license they chose. --rimshottalk 22:03, 1 March 2017 (UTC)

Adding information to an image file after posting

I am about to add some photographs for which I do not have complete information at the moment. I expect to get it soon, however I would like to be able to use the image on a wiki page sooner rather than later.

My question: Once the image file has been uploaded, can the informational fields be added to or changed? Thank you.Nativesojourner (talk) 19:43, 1 March 2017 (UTC)

You can edit the description page later. However, provide at least the essential information: source, author, licensing. If you don't, the file will probably be deleted quickly. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:08, 1 March 2017 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding Fischer, Ludwig Wilhelm

--Tomessmer (talk) 17:29, 18 February 2017 (UTC)

  • Can someone, preferably a German speaker, work out if any actual help is needed here? I gather this is about the two photos in de:Ludwig Wilhelm Fischer. It seems to be about a licensing of rights (presumably the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International these were uploaded with) from Stadtarchiv Marktoberdorf, but I would presume these images are public domain, so there are no rights to grant. Also, if a licensing of rights by the institution is needed, that should follow the formula at COM:OTRS or, more likely, COM:OTRS/de. - Jmabel ! talk 17:39, 24 February 2017 (UTC)

@Tomessmer: ’Tschulljung fürs Englisch-Schreiben. Bei Problemen bitte noch einmal in [Commons:Forum]] nachfragen.
The questions are, as it seems, related to File:Fischer Ludwig-Wilhelm.jpg and File:Zeichnung Innerer Markt MOD 1856 Fischer.jpg. Because L.-W. Fischer died in 1890, which is over 100 years ago, his drawing is in public domain. The photograph must have been taken when he was alive. We do unfortunately not know the date (the date you’ve given is clearly wrong), but let’s assume it has been taken shortly before L. Fischer’s death, If the photogrpaher was a very young person then and got very old, he/she could even have lived until the 1960s or even early 1970s, but then his heirs would own the copyright, not the city administration of Markoberndorf, so their claims regarding drawing and photograph are simply wrong.
This said, the date for the photo is probably the scan date, but that’s not interesting here. And both files need proper categorisation – select for both an appropriate sub-category of Category:Marktoberdorf, for the photo perhaps also Category:Rain (Lech) is a good choice (estimating from de:Ludwig Wilhelm Fischer). — Speravir – 23:22, 2 March 2017 (UTC)

Uploading a Photo

Hello,

I have a photograph of Sir Henry Gidney which I would like to upload to his page. I am not very tech savvy and am getting lost in all your guides and help pages. This is the only photo I want to upload.

Please could you tell me how, I am happy to send you the photo for you to review.

  • To upload a photo you absolutely must create an account. But I'm not at all sure if this is a photo we can accept, and seeing it wouldn't help us know that. What follows is my take, someone else may disagree in some respect.
  • Given his dates, I presume that you are not the photographer. And given "I have a photo" I assume you have a physical paper photo. Correct me if those are wrong.
  • Possession of a physical photo does not mean that you own the relevant intellectual property rights. Given that you are not the photographer, here are only two ways this photo can be OK for us:
    1. You know who the photographer is and you are that person's heir (or by some other means they explicitly you the intellectual property rights, but that's unlikely).
    2. You have some specific reason to believe the picture would be in the public domain both in the country where it was taken and in the United States. Assuming that the picture was taken in India the relevant conditions are described at en:Template:PD-India. If the picture is from when he was young, then there is at least a fair chance these conditions might be met; otherwise they seem less likely to me.
  • I know this is probably all very discouraging. The problem is that if rights persist but have been "orphaned", we (Commons) can't accept the photo. Assuming the photo has never been published, it can't even qualify for non-free use on the English-language Wikipedia.
  • @Clindberg: you may have more thoughts on this, or have a suggestion who would. - Jmabel ! talk 16:23, 2 March 2017 (UTC)

I need assistance with knowing which copyright tag(s) to attach to this image file.

I've obtained this file after contacting the Storting (Norwegian Parliament) Info Service for about a month. After several weeks of back-and-forth email inquiries and responses, I've received this image file from an advisor who works at the archives of the Storting named Marthe Hommerstad.

She stated in her most recent email message, which is where she have attached the image file to (bold emphasis is mine):

From: Hommerstad Marthe <Marthe.Hommerstad@stortinget.no> To: K Lue <lues92@earthlink.net> Subject: SV: SV: SV: SV: Same-Sex Marriage Parliamentary Vote (June 2008) Date: Mar 2, 2017 4:00 AM

Dear Kyle,

The information is public, even though we have not published it. Therefore it should not be a problem to use the information, and use the images, even though I think it would be most fair to remove the members of the upper chamber, Lagtinget, since they did not have a part in the vote. This is difficult to read out of the images I sent you. I also thought about the information about the vote in the Lagtinget. In this period it was extremely seldom any debate about the bills passed in the lower chamber. It was therefore quite extraordinary that the debate lasted five hours, and also that the vote were divided.

Sincerely, Marthe Hommerstad

According to Commons:Copyright rules by territory#Norway, "Texts of laws and decisions, proposals, reports and statements made and published by state or local authorities are not protected by copyright, but images used in such publications may be protected unless they were made specifically for the publication." I would think this falls in that general area. Imaginably more detail to be had, in Norwegian, at https://lovdata.no/dokument/NL/lov/1961-05-12-2/KAPITTEL_1#%C2%A79.
You might get further advice at Commons:Village pump/Copyright. In my experience, that's where the people on Commons most knowledgable about copyright "hang out." - Jmabel ! talk 01:15, 3 March 2017 (UTC)

Unwanted subcategory

Creating a category for a group of pictures (Category:Piranshahr town), there was also an unwanted subcategory created. How to get rid of? Bussakendle (talk) 19:18, 4 March 2017 (UTC)

By placing "[[Category:Piranshar town]]" on a page, you are putting it in that category. So by putting "[[Category:Piranshar town]]" on the page Category:Piranshar town you are making that page its own parent. Meanwhile, you haven't used this method to give the category any other parents (without parent categories, the category really only nominally exists, nor have you put any images in that category. You might want to take a look at Commons:Categories#Categorizing pages. - Jmabel ! talk 23:12, 4 March 2017 (UTC)

translate CC content (not the page)

I translated into French a sociogram uploaded on Wikimedia Commons by a German user. Is there an easy way to add the French file version on his file page (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Schritte_zur_Inklusion.svg)? - I contacted him beforehand to ask if he is okay with the translation and I checked the FAQ here, for I am sure other people encountered similar problems already... Someone willing to help? Merci in advance :-) --Ptitescargot (talk) 14:55, 2 March 2017 (UTC)

@Perhelion: This question is SVG related. Take a look.
My idea: Re-upload as own file. (What does „Schritte zu Inklusion” mean in French? Then this could be the filename.) Give Schritte zur Inklusion.svg as source, as authors copy the line and add your sign. Add {{AttribSVG}} into the description of your version, and add {{Derivative versions}} to the German language file version. — Speravir – 23:39, 2 March 2017 (UTC)

The Catatumbo River by Worlds9thWonder

Hello,

I'm a poet and wrote a poem about a storm. Then I found the perfect photo of a storm on Wikimedia Commons under the user: Worlds9thWonder. I have tried for hours over months to try and contact this user but unfortunately, I cannot find them anywhere - not on any site. I noted from other websites that his photo of The Catatumbo River in Venezuela used to be on Wikimedia Commons under this user's account/page and though the user seems to have deleted that particular photo, I note that there are many websites still presenting the same photo with of course, attribution to 'Worlds9thWonder' for the spectacular photo (saying that the source is Wikimedia Commons. Have i indeed missed out on using this brilliant photo?!! Don't want to sound like a cry baby but I believe there are many others still using it even though Worlds9thWonder has taken it off of his page/account on this website. Please make my year by somehow directing me to where I can possibly contact this user: Worlds9thWonder. It would be an artistic crime not to show more of the world his/her photo of The Catatumbo River in Venezuela exactly how he has captured it. I am willing to pay to use it if he/she has since transferred it to a paying site. Please help!!!!!

The user is User talk:Worlds9thwonder. The file was File:Catatumbo.png, uploaded in 2012, but it was deleted in 2014 as a suspected copyright violation [1]. That means it probably originated somewhere else and was never properly placed under a free license. --ghouston (talk) 11:33, 4 March 2017 (UTC)

Deletion log says "many Tineye results" some of which were higher resolution, but unfortunately the Tineye query is deleted, and it would be a lot of work to restore the original so we could requery and find those, but it would still have a rights mess. @ShelleyEvans: A Tineye search shows over 450 hits, at least 50 or so (including uses of it in other art) date from 3-4 years before the image was uploaded to Commons, and the date that the uploader claimed it was taken. Hi,
Any file uploaded on Wikimedia Commons can be used for any purpose (it is a requirement to be here), but the license is specific to each file. The file you mentioned is licensed under "Creative Commons Attribution 2.1", so you have to attribute the author and mention the license. You may contact the uploader on her/his talk page to get more information. Regards, Yann (talk) 20:15, 8 March 2017 (UTC)
Laura, you can in fact choose between 4 licenses here. You must read carefully, what is demanded by the licenses. For an overview see en:Creative Commons license (you have two different licenses with attribution claim here), en:BSD licenses (apparently it’s the 3-clause revised license here) and en:GNU Free Documentation License. For details you probably could ask in en:Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. In general usually somewhere in the book, mostly in backmatter, there is an table of figures, where you could add the information about author and license. For some licenses a short mention is enough, some licenses demand reproducing their full text. — Speravir – 02:21, 9 March 2017 (UTC)

This is a topic not related to Commons. Read en:Wikipedia:Picture tutorial or an equivalent version in your favorite language. In short: There is a parameter in the image embedding code for this. By default one should add thumb, but you can give an explicit value, too. — Speravir – 23:11, 13 March 2017 (UTC)
Oops, correction: thumb is independent of explicit values; without them you will get a size according to your user settings, the default depends on the wiki. Confer images I’ve included now. — Speravir – 23:30, 13 March 2017 (UTC)

Yes, any new account can be used to upload files as soon as it is created. Ruslik (talk) 19:48, 7 March 2017 (UTC)
Except for overwriting an existing file. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:23, 7 March 2017 (UTC)

  • If a new user tries to upload many files he is stopped shortly for some time. This user succeeded with 5 files and for the 6th he was unable (it was a picture of Sergei Kirienko). --ssr (talk) 09:41, 8 March 2017 (UTC)
How was his problem related specifically to being a new user? What error message did he get? Did he retry later? Was he trying to upload a duplicate of an existing photo of С. Кириенко? -- Asclepias (talk) 12:10, 8 March 2017 (UTC)
At his latest contribution, there is a note: "(Tag: New user rapidly uploading files)" (can be seen by link; I don't know exactly what message got he personaly while uploading, but I can find Facebook archived discussion where he was reporting it). After being unable, he stopped and never returned. The photos he succeeded to upload were very useful though. The Kirienko photo he was going to upload was not duplicate. --ssr (talk) 12:36, 8 March 2017 (UTC)
OK, so it is a filter. But the details are not viewable by ordinary users like me. It would be interesting at least to have an idea of what it considers as "new user" and "rapidly". It's unfortunate that in this case the user did not retry. I'm guessing that he could probably have continued by slowing a little the rate of uploads. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:15, 8 March 2017 (UTC)
This filter is tag only. It does not stop users from uploading. Ruslik (talk) 18:20, 8 March 2017 (UTC)
I have found the Facebook discussion (it's in Russian). The error message was cited as follows: "This action has been automatically identified as harmful, and therefore disallowed (more info)." I don't know why it was. --ssr (talk) 20:27, 8 March 2017 (UTC)
Per Special:AbuseLog, the upload was prevented by filter 156 "Small jpeg's uploaded by users with low editcount". Matma Rex (talk) 11:29, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
In fact this is a scanned paper photo from 1998, made by user personally. The other (permitted) photos were the same. --ssr (talk) 10:02, 10 March 2017 (UTC)
Is the scanner not capable of producing something better than a 302×500 px thumbnail? LX (talk, contribs) 11:06, 10 March 2017 (UTC)
The photo was scanned at these times and placed at the website. It was OK for then (800x600 resolution was most popular AFAIR). For now, it is unclear if original is available and why the user decided to upload photo from his website instead of re-scanning. --ssr (talk) 11:33, 10 March 2017 (UTC)

If you don't find the information you're looking for on the file description page and at Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia, you can ask questions right here. Be sure to specify the name of the file. LX (talk, contribs) 13:36, 10 March 2017 (UTC)

Hi, I wanted to upload the logo of our school on its wikipedia site, but I got a message that because wikipedia couldn't determine whether I have the rights to the image or not, it was not possible to add that to the page. However, the school owns the rights so there should not be any problem. Is there a way to include the logo? thank you in advance, Tuija p.s. other schools and companies have logos on their pages — Preceding unsigned comment added by TuijaW (talk • contribs) 18:16, 10 March 2017‎ (UTC)

If the logo is eligible for copyright protection, then yes, the school is most likely the copyright holder, which is exactly why claiming that you personally created it and own the rights to it would be a problem. If you are an employee at the school, see Commons:Guidance for paid editors, which includes information on sharing logotypes and other important advice. If you are a student, you will have to ask the school to have a legal representative sign a licensing declaration and send it in via e-mail, assuming that the logo is above the threshold of originality. • Apologies for replying in English: my French is good enough to understand your question, but not to respond.
  • If you want to upload a selfie, just create an account and upload in the usual manner. See Assistant de téléversement (UploadWizard).
  • However, if someone else takes the photo they, not you, would own the copyright, and we need that person, not you, to grant a license. In that case, by far the simplest solution would be for the photographer to create an account (if he/she does not already have one) and upload it (again, see Assistant de téléversement (UploadWizard)). If you must upload a picture that was taken by someone else, it gets much more complicated: see Commons:OTRS/fr. - Jmabel ! talk 04:37, 12 March 2017 (UTC)

Regarding cigarette brands

Hello,

I've been browsing the Tobacco packaging warning messages as of recently and I would like to expand the information on there. I am a collector of cigarette packs and I have a lot of packs from all over the world, which I want to upload here through Wikimedia for everyone to use.

I have tried looking through all the guides but they're so complex and, at times, a tad too vague for my senses that I did not find the right kind of information. I've also tried looking through the archive, and only one question was posted there before, but that did not adhere to my own question, so I felt like posting it here directly.

Would I encounter any problems if I, for example, wanted to post a picture of a Moroccan pack of Marlboro Red or Gold on here? It's my own work and not from any site, but I feel like I may get in trouble regarding the copyright of said company. I've seen various pictures being posted before, but I don't want to take any risks regarding that.

Regards,

MatteoNL97.

help with Wikimedia OTRS release generator step 5

I keep on pressing create to release eMail but nothing is happening --TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 20:27, 12 March 2017 (UTC)

Probably not. Depends what needs to be confirmed through OTRS and by whom. If the expected communication is that someone, other than you, must send a confirmation of a free license from their address, then you sending something else from your address misses the mark on the three conditions and it will probably waste the OTRS team's time. If it is about "File:Hal Holbrook October 2010.jpg", a free license should be asked, not a permission to upload, and it would be more simple for everybody if you asked the author if he would accept to change the tag directly on the flickr page to offer a free license there. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:55, 12 March 2017 (UTC)

Would like to post my own original photo of a motorcycle I own which I recently purchased.

I recently purchased a 2017 Triumph Bonneville Bobber and was looking for Wikipedia article and didn't see one so I created the page. The page currently does not have any photo and I would like to share a photo on the page I have taken of my own motorcycle for use on the page as it is a new model for 2017.

I would like to know if this is allowed?

Image upload

I am adding info to an article about the Cornell University Glee Club audio recordings. The article states that the recording list is incomplete, and to verify the information I am submitting I would like to upload a scan of a record label. The record was issued some time in the 1950's. It contains no copyright information; only the university's crest, the name of the glee club, the name of the director, the words "Cornell Alumni Association" and the titles of the songs recorded. It also contains some wording about the performance license limitations ("Licensed by the Manufacturer Only For Non-Commercial Use on Phonographs In Homes"). Is this image allowable? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Andrewgage (talk • contribs)

uploading files with minor amendments

On a couple of occasions when I have corrected scans on an odd page due to a line being missed and uploaded a new version, the corrected page image does not appear opposite my text: the old incorrect image still remains. However, the new corrected image is shown when the image tag is used. Other times this problem does not occur. Is there any way round this? - Esme Shepherd (talk) 23:14, 14 March 2017 (UTC)

  • Most likely just a caching issue, which will clear up eventually. Try clearing your browser cache next time this happens, although there can also be some caching between the database and your browser. - Jmabel ! talk 05:56, 15 March 2017 (UTC)

Chunked upload script broken?

Has something been changed lately for chunked uploading? Both my latest uploads didn’t work as good as all others before with Rillke’s chunked upload script (cf. User talk:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js):

  • “use stash and async (recommended for large videos and photos)” is by default active, but the script refused with an error, I should deactivate async.
  • Doing so after upload I had to click on a yellow line to continue, which resulted in a login error (do not remember the content).
  • Nonetheless the files have been uploaded, but all update comments are lost and also the customary hint to the chunked upload script.

For comparison: It worked on 6 March: file with upload comment. It didn't on 9 March, File:Chekhov White Dacha study.jpg and today: File:Moscow Oblast Regions.svg. ({{ping|Matma Rex|p=}}, perhaps also @Jdx and Zhuyifei1999). — Speravir – 02:55, 12 March 2017 (UTC)
Made a mistake, hence @Matma Rex. --Speravir 02:57, 12 March 2017 (UTC)

  • With stash and async: FAILED: cannot-async-upload-file: The parameters "async" and "file" cannot be combined. If you want asynchronous processing of your uploaded file, first upload it to stash (using the "stash" parameter) and then publish the stashed file asynchronously (using "filekey" and "async"). Could be somewhat related to phab:T156365 but that one was deployed in late January. The relevant API query parameters are stash=1, async=1, file=<file contents> --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 05:29, 12 March 2017 (UTC)
  • Without stash and async: The first upload request to API (which was supposed to be a chunked upload, therefore without the upload summary) was thought to be a non-chunked upload and was directly a success fid not return a filekey; the second API request (which was supposed to publish the chunk-uploaded file) queried the API with an empty file key and got the "invalid-file-key" from API, which triggered the warning text: "To continue uploading, please log in and click here after you did so. Script will try to resume. Error reported by server is: To continue uploading, please log in and click here after you did so. Script will try to resume. Error reported by server is: invalid-file-key: Not a valid file key."
--Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 05:29, 12 March 2017 (UTC)
The timing of this change is consistent with MediaWiki train to 1.29.0-wmf.15 on March 8, but I'm unable to find the relevent change that caused this. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 05:39, 12 March 2017 (UTC)
Thank you for now, Zhuyifei1999. I noticed, what you did for the error messages. ;-) I’m really interested in getting the script running without this issue (and very probably there are more people). — Speravir – 18:18, 12 March 2017 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure there were no recent changes to the upload API, and the error message indeed matches the change from January. Maybe it's a problem only for files that are smaller than your chunk size? Both of the failing examples you linked are much smaller than the successful example. I don't really know how bigChunkedUpload works :( Matma Rex (talk) 18:47, 12 March 2017 (UTC)
bigChunkedUpload.js is the interface, the actual uploading logic is in User:Rillke/MwJSBot.js, and it replace the parameter chunk= with file= whenever only one chunk is needed. IIRC, bigChunkedUpload worked with both multi-chunk files and one-chunk files previously, but reading that phab ticket and ApiUpload.php again I don't understand how that would succeed. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 07:13, 13 March 2017 (UTC)
I do not know, how it works in detail, but yes, it worked fine with small files despite stash & async is activated by default. Actually the default chunk size is 4 MB (or MiB?). — Speravir – 22:59, 13 March 2017 (UTC)
I am still interested in fixing this. It still works with files, which are uploaded in chunks, cf. File:Nike89 Glienicker Brücke (crop).jpg. @Matma Rex and Zhuyifei1999: Is there no way to fix User:Rillke/MwJSBot.js? It may actually already be broken since January; the latest uploads I did with files definitely below minimal chunk size have been in early December, but it worked fine then: File:Symbolic Love Heart.svg and File:Balance scales symbol.svg. — Speravir – 01:48, 19 March 2017 (UTC)
 Doing… --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 06:07, 19 March 2017 (UTC)
✓ Done by making the script never use file= parameter. I'd actually prefer to have a better understanding of how it used to work, since according to the linked phabricator ticket file= will never work with chunked uploading whether or not the patch was merged in January. (The patch simply made it yell out the error instead of silently ignoring) --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 06:37, 19 March 2017 (UTC)
Without function checking: Thank you, Zhuyifei (? or Zhu Yifei or …?). Unfortunately I cannot help, could it have been always buggy without noticing this? Or should the issue with the vanishing edit comment then have occurred earlier? — Speravir – 18:57, 19 March 2017 (UTC)
What I meant is, the upload for small files with stash and async should never have worked and I don't understand how it could work at all earlier. It's not losing edit summaries, but upload failures. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 23:57, 19 March 2017 (UTC)
Aha. Just as feedback before this thread gets archived: @Zhuyifei1999: It is proved now, that the script works again with files below smallest chunk size: File:Elflein, Hermann.jpg. — Speravir – 18:52, 24 March 2017 (UTC)

Uploading image with unknown date

I'm trying to upload this image, which should be OK as it's under cc-by-2.0. My issue that the upload wizard is insisting on a YYYY-MM-DD creation date, but the page only lists ca. 1935, as does the catalogue entry. Is there another way to upload the file with a less specific date? Mortee (talk) 15:46, 19 March 2017 (UTC)

Sure. Just don't use the Upload Wizard tool. You can use Commons:Upload or the basic upload form. You can include {{Circa|1935}} in the date field. Also, we can note that on its website the Library says that the photograph is in the public domain [6]. That status of the photograph can be expressed with PD-Australia + PD-1996. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:44, 19 March 2017 (UTC)

Corrected uploaded file looks the same as original - Eurocopter EC 145.jpg

Hello, I just uploaded - whith permission from the author (see request User talk:Numéro 1963 and answer on user:Domendod talk page) - an improved version of his original file (which was too dark). Much to my surprise, the new file, although slightly heavier, looks the same to me ! Copyright help regarding File:Rakvere JK Tarvas (2017).png

--Andres1221 (talk) 18:00, 15 March 2017 (UTC)

Hello, I uploaded new logo of Rakvere JK Tarvas that changed this year. As I am club's representative I am allowed to share the rights for wikipedia purposes. I am not only familiar with wikimedia system to put it here correctly.

The purpose of use stays the same: "The image is placed in the infobox at the top of the article discussing JK Tarvas football club, a subject of public interest. The significance of the logo is to help the reader identify the organization, assure the readers that they have reached the right article containing critical commentary about the organization, and illustrate the organization's intended branding message in a way that words alone could not convey."

Andres (JK Tarvas) --Andres1221 (talk) 18:00, 15 March 2017 (UTC)

  • It was deleted because you did not provide any license.
  • If you intend to free-license the logo then:
    • If the club owns the copyright, you as a representative can send permission as described at COM:OTRS. You will need to grant a specific license. I recommend Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 (CC BY-SA 4.0).
    • If the artist has never formally assigned the copyright to the club, then either the artist must do that or the artist, not the representative of the club, needs to send the permission to as described at COM:OTRS
  • If you don't intend to free-license the logo then it does not belong on Commons. Some of the Wikipedias, including the English-language Wikipedia, allow logos on a non-free basis; they each have their own process for that. - Jmabel ! talk 03:27, 16 March 2017 (UTC)

  • I'm not sure what you mean by a "file related to an actor/actress". Do you mean a Wikipedia article? "File" here doesn't make sense.
  • In general, no, you cannot upload a photo to Commons unless either (1) you took it yourself, (2) it is in the public domain (rarely the case for the sort of thing you are mentioning here, unless this is someone from a hundred years or so ago, and even then not everything would be public domain or (3) you get an explicit license from the copyright-holder through the process described at COM:OTRS. - Jmabel ! talk 03:19, 16 March 2017 (UTC)

Block a user

I'm coming here to ask that someone block Johnnaber and take away his talk page access. I've done this to him on Wikipedia and I noted that he had an account here as well. I don't ask this lightly, but this looks to be a case where there's actually more chance of harm happening if it isn't restricted.

Here's the gist of what's going on:

Johnnaber signed up for an account and has been using Wikipedia as a way to message some of his friends. He hasn't made any other edits and he uses Wikipedia solely to communicate with others. The problem here is that he's in a private prison and as such, his communication is extremely likely to be restricted if he's resorting to using Wikipedia as a method to contact others.

What makes this a tricky situation is that the prison seems to be restricting his access to the outside world, as per some of his statements on his now deleted Wikipedia talk page and if he was meant to contact his friends via the more conventional methods (e-mail, phone) then he would be contacting them in this way. In other words, he's communicating in a way that is almost certainly against the prison's rules and thus making it very likely that he could be punished - maybe even ensuring that his prison sentence will be longer - for communicating outside of the authorized channels. If he's supposed to be talking to them then he can get his parents to give him their e-mail addresses, if he has access to e-mail.

If he can't access e-mail then ultimately they are not people that he is authorized to contact, meaning that again - he's using Wikipedia to bend (if not break) the rules at the prison. None of the messages back and forth have really even been that bad, but the fact is that he's almost certainly not supposed to be doing this.

I feel bad reporting him here, but he's almost certainly breaking the rules, something that will only end up getting him in hot water at the prison facility. I'm not certain if they can tack on more time, but they could take away the ability to get out early for good behavior and this could get some of his privileges revoked or even get Wikipedia blocked at the facility, which would be detrimental to the others at the prison. Tokyogirl79 (talk) 13:52, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

  • The reason I'm saying that it's a prison is that he described it as such here. A look at the name on the account here shows that it's a therapeutic boarding house, but that still puts us in the same situation since he's likely not supposed to contact people outside without the facility's consent and that's a place where they can keep people longer than initially stated, as they'll view breaking the rules as a sign that they're not getting better. (I had a family member that stayed in a mental health center and that's exactly what happened to some of the residents that did break the rules.) Tokyogirl79 (talk) 13:55, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
  • Another thing to note is that via the now deleted talk page on his WP account, he is unable to open letters, so again, he's likely not allowed to message people like this and is doing this without the facility workers knowing. I know I'm just piling on here, but I am concerned for him. I'm not going to contact the facility or anything, but I do want to make sure that he does things the right way. Again, I feel bad but I don't want him to screw up his chances of getting out in a timely manner. Tokyogirl79 (talk) 13:58, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

how to upload certified / authenticated poem in wikipedia article?

Hi - short question, since I am absolutely new to this world...: in the German wiki I uploaded a poem. On my discussion page I saw an "authenticity certificate" which told me I could proceed to upload the poem on the page of the article (Walter Hildebrandt. Dialektik). Questions: now I can't even see this certificate any more. And even if I did: I would not know how to actively upload the poem onto the article page..... thanks for any hints or support!! --Thora.Amend (talk) 20:01, 16 March 2017 (UTC)

Plaintext content should generally not be uploaded to Commons, but added as plaintext content with wiki markup directly on the project where you intend to use it. If by the German wiki, you mean German Wikipedia, see wikipedia:de:Hilfe:Seite bearbeiten. If you mean Wikisource, see wikisource:de:Wikisource:Editionsrichtlinien. Make sure you type both your username and temporary password exactly as written in the e-mail but without quotes (keeping in mind that both the username and password are case sensitive), and make sure you do it before the temporary password expires. LX (talk, contribs) 11:28, 17 March 2017 (UTC)

If by use, you mean upload, and if by logos, you mean copyright protected, non-free logotypes, then it's because this site only hosts free content; see Commons:Project scope/Summary and Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter#Trademarks. i want to upload a cover of a book as i could not find it on wikipedia, but i wasn't sure if i could. all the pages for the other books in the series had the covers, but still i'm not sure if i could - — Preceding unsigned comment added by Boredpersonandco (talk • contribs)

  • You are asking on Wikimedia Commons, not on Wikipedia. If there is any copyrighted material on the cover, then probably not. For example, if there is artwork you cannot, unless the artwork is old enough to be in the public domain (e.g. a reproduction of a Vermeer would be fine). Typically, anything other than typography and simple geometric shapes means Commons can't accept it.
  • If you just want to upload the image for use in an English-language Wikipedia (en-wiki) article, en-wiki makes some provision for non-free use, but that would be strictly an upload directly to en-wiki, not to Commons. See, for example, en:File:US cover of Go Set a Watchman.jpg: you can follow that as an example of doing that correctly for non-free use on en-wiki. - Jmabel ! talk 22:05, 17 March 2017 (UTC)

How to correctly reuse wikimedia commons content on wikimedia commons

Hi, as I want to use it on the Spanish wikipedia I changed a graphic done by another user [7] putting Spanish text into it [8]. I searched arround a lot -- and then hoped the upload wizzard would help -- to find out how to correctly attribute my modified work to the original author. But I didn't find a clearcut answer and so I tried my best. Could somebody look at it and recommend (or implement) the needed changes? What is the easiest way to do this? 123 (talk) 00:12, 18 March 2017 (UTC)

Can't see an uploaded file

Hi all, I've uploaded this picture from Flickr. However, I'm not able to see it, generate a thumbnail or crop it. Any idea of what can be wrong? Best regards --Discasto talk 21:23, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

Could it be the sheer size? I can’t find anything documenting a limit in pixels, but there’s mention of a MediaWiki configuration option not to scale (thumbnail) images where the memory consumption exceeds a certain amount. See if a reduced version, of maybe half the linear dimensions (1/4 the pixels), will work; you can always link it to the full-size version.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 22:36, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
Commons:FAQ, section ”What resolution should the images I upload be?”:

However, scaling of images may fail if the image is very large and rendering takes too much time or memory (in that case, either no scaled image is shown, or the full image is served to the browser, often causing it to lock up). … Large JPEGs are only problematic if they are saved in progressive mode, since the entire image has to be processed at once. Use baseline mode instead.
In case the full scale original is too large to process for the software, upload it anyway, but then please overwrite it with a scaled down version (around 6 megapixels in size); the full scale version will still be available in the upload history, and you can add a reference to it in the image description.

In other words reupload and overwrite with a version, that is not in progressive mode (and downscaled)! (I made a local version downscaled to 20 %, which is actually around 7 MPixel and 4MB big.) — Speravir – 23:32, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
Foe one thing, Commons has been horribly slow with photos for a few months. I'm trying to upload a set of photos right now and it is taking up to 9 minutes per photo. But rather than reduce the number of pixels, I think it would be better to increase the JPEG compuression. In Photoshop, you have options when writing a JPG as to how large of a file it makes. Flickr image promoted to QI status

Please have a look at File:PM Modi paying tribute to Adbul Hamid.jpg. It has been taken from Flickr (uploaded by me), and it has been promoted to Quality Image status which is against the guidelines. Which place would be the correct one to ask for its demotion? Bharatiya29 (talk) 11:00, 18 March 2017 (UTC)

I'm guessing it's because there is no evidence that the unidentified official photographer for the Prime minister of India is a Commons user, which seems to be a condition for quality images, according to the guidelines page. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:36, 18 March 2017 (UTC)

Image replacement or updating

Hi,

I'd like to help out but, gosh, maybe Wikipedia is just too complex for me. I've searched for hours trying to figure out the procedure for replacing an image. I've found nothing helpful!

I'd like to replace the image on this page with a new version.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Duplessis_Autoritratto.jpg

Is there a concise tutorial on how to do this?

Thanks for any help. - pixel8tor — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pixel8tor (talk • contribs)

  • It is rarely correct to overwrite an image on Commons (there are cases where it's OK, but this doesn't sound like one). I'm guessing that you want to replace an image in a Wikipedia article. Upload your new image, with a new name, then refer to your new image rather than the old one in the Wikipedia article in question.
  • If you really think this is a case where you should overwrite an image on Commons, could you please explain what is wrong with the current image File:Duplessis_Autoritratto.jpg? It looks OK to me. - Jmabel ! talk 15:19, 22 March 2017 (UTC)

Hi Jmabel,

The current image suffers from varnish yellowing, bad exposure, and soot pollution. I've adjusted the color to compensate for those deficiencies. I've seen edits like this accepted before. Is that an appropriate reason to overwrite? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pixel8tor (talk • contribs) 15:44, 22 March 2017 (UTC) (UTC)

About the technical aspect: tomorrow, your account should get the possibility to overwrite files. Then, look for the link "upload a new version of this file", under the file history. About the policy aspect: see Commons:Overwriting existing files. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:40, 22 March 2017 (UTC)
Actually we have for this file exactly this situation, that it already has been overwritten, but should have not in this case: The now active version is clearly distinctive from the now overwritten version, and the source attribution is wrong now. This is a case for a split request. @Pixel8tor: You could overwrite it and give the reasons in the upload comment, but it seems to be better to upload as new file (add simply (retouched) at end of filename), add the original file as source and add also the template {{Retouched}}, where you can insert your improvements. But, please, wait for a split of the file, as it is now. I will notify you again. — Speravir – 19:41, 22 March 2017 (UTC)
Well, that went fast: See now for File:Joseph Duplessis, self portrait.jpg. — Speravir – 22:41, 22 March 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for the informational links. They helped make things clearer. I see you reverted the page back to the inferior image, even though the image you pulled was superior in many ways. I don't understand your reason for doing this; can you please explain. Why wouldn't you want a better version to replace the inferior one? I'm very confused!--Pixel8tor (talk) 00:22, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

Technically it wasn’t a revert and it wasn’t me: Splitting and merging can only be done by admins, I just made the request. But I requested splitting for two reasons: The newer version is clearly distinctive from the older one, and it is from a different, unknown source. Quality aspects do not matter here, though actually in my eyes the older version is better (locally on my computer I have a vesion with autmatic fixes byIrfanview, that looks better than both versions). And, this is completely independent from your question here: No one hinders you from uploading a better file – we’ve already told you above. — Speravir – 23:19, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

Flickr

This Flickr Uploader has released his image copyright to this File:Grand Hall, Iolani Palace (8258329057).jpg after I asked him to but he changed the tags to PD on the image, so commons is questioning the validity of it. Can someone fix this for me somehow? I'm not the uploader so I can tag it saying I released the copyright. --KAVEBEAR (talk) 19:53, 17 March 2017 (UTC)

The Flickr user has applied the Public Domain Mark to the file, which is not a waiver of one's own copyright like the CC0 Public Domain Dedication. The Public Domain Mark is intended for use with old works that are free of copyright restrictions around the world. It is not an instrument for releasing one's own works. If it's the Flickr uploader is the author and copyright holder of the photograph and they wish to waive their rights, they should use {{CC-zero}} instead. Hello,

Despite received confirmation of permission from Wikimedia Commons the following file (own work) was deleted:

I would appreciate if, if you restore the file and it also was deleted from Wikipedia page.

In the meantime I have uploaded the same photo on Wikimedia Commons and used it instead of the deleted one on Wikipedia page.

Do not recreate deleted content, as that will get your account blocked. The correct way to get content undeleted if you have sent in permission information to OTRS is (as explained on that page) to be patient, wait for the permission to be processed, and respond to any requests for additional information. Seeing as you've already bypassed all standard procedures and recreated the file yourself, I don't understand what you hope to achieve by restoring another copy of the same file. Please also note this goes almost of my frustration threshold as I expected Wikipedia to allow for easy access and I m not willing to waste my time adding content and getting slapped in the face by mechanics that are not even giving me proper hints what goes wrong.

1) Logged in to Wikipedia 2) Went to page https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sastrugi 3) Selected Edit ("Bearbeiten") 4) Insert Media -> Upload -> drag png of my picture on to rectangle 5) Tick box that confirms I own the rights to this picture 6) Click Upload 7) New Form appears, Entering description, select date 8) Click on Save Button (upper right) 9) Receive annoying message -AGAIN- making me less and less wanting to contribute here "We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. @Mina49er: It seems your upload is blocked by the cross-wiki upload filter, which filters out possible copyright violations. If you are really the copyright holder, you can circumvent this filter using Special:UploadWizard. We apologize for this inconvenience, but the filter was made since the cross-wiki upload tool before was a huge problem for us patrollers. Thanks, Poké95 10:21, 15 March 2017 (UTC)

Thanks much Pokefan95 I will try with this other tool, but are you realizing this restriction complicates things.
This filter - while perhaps making sense - is driving away many a volunteer--this is not discussable with them as most will simply give up.
I strongly suggest: Change it!
When asking a few colleagues to do the update for me they also didnt know how to , despite them being Wiki user for a longer time than me.
Mina49er (talk) 13:26, 15 March 2017 (UTC)

@Mina49er: Disabling the filter will only make us very busy again. There have been a lot of copyright violations and out of scope images when the cross-wiki upload tool was introduced by the Wikimedia Foundation (without consensus!). We only have three solutions: first, to create an abuse filter, second, to disable the tool completely, or third, to recruit more admins. The third solution is not that easy. The second solution, although I prefer it, will just receive criticisms and objections from other users. The first solution is the best for all users. I understand the filter complicates things, but disabling the filter is no good for our community. What we should suggest to the Wikimedia Foundation is to obtain consensus first before implementing such tool, instead of making us a test site for their tools. Thanks, Poké95 02:53, 22 March 2017 (UTC)

Personality rights template-Whose concern?

Hello Commons! I got a question regarding pictures that include the personality rights template ( or very well could fall under the category). Does this template also needs to concern s.o. if one is taking the file from commons and including it, like normal other pictures, in wikipedia articles? Or does this template is merely for someone outside of the wiki-system who wants to use it? I read some information about it (here Commons:Photographs of identifiable people) but it didnt quite became clear if the personality rights are also an issue or could become one, for users in the wikisystem who use the image in other wiki projects. I like using many commons pictures on wikipedia, yet i want to be sure that it is all ok. I guess that goes for most users. Thanks for responding! --Joobo (talk) 12:45, 13 March 2017 (UTC)

The warning applies to all situations where personality rights may exist and restrict the use. The most obvious potential problematic uses would probably be outside of Wikimedia and we could say that the warning template is mostly to remind external reusers to check the laws of the country of reuse about the type of reuse and, depending on the situation, obtain the accord of the person pictured. Inside Wikimedia, if the picture is used in conformity with the policies of Commons and the policies of the Wikimedia project where it is displayed, cases of potential problematic uses are less likely. But you could imagine some uses that could be abusive. If you have in mind a particular use of a particular picture, telling what it is would probably get you more specific answers. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:43, 13 March 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick response! I understand, basically it applies to all situations. I will give the example on your talkpage. --Joobo (talk) 17:22, 13 March 2017 (UTC)

Examples due to help desk question

To get precise i will give you these examples of pictures i included into wikipedia articles. One picture was shot on a street in Brazil (this one File:Mercado Artesanal de São Paulo.jpg) in São Paulo and shows some people. I included it some time ago on the German wikipedia article of Brazil, in the section of Population, subsection ethnics. (see de:Brasilien#Ethnien).

I am also wondering if the picture itself is even legal, cause on commons they say that actualy you would need any permission to take any photo of any person in the country of Brazil? (see Commons:Photographs of identifiable people#Country specific)

Another picture i would take as an example is in the German article of the London eye. It shows some passengers in the capsule and the picture got the particular template. (see de:London_Eye).

Could you comment on these images, and these type of using in wikipedia? Merci.--Joobo (talk) 17:36, 13 March 2017 (UTC)

See Commons:Country_specific_consent_requirements#Brazil, in particular: "It is generally recognized both by case law and legal doctrine that consent is implied or not needed for pictures of people who are present in a public space or participating in a public event (unless the depicted person is the main focus of the picture)". So, yes, this picture is usable. The template's purpose is to indicate that, if someone in the picture writes to OTRS saying "OMG I'm on Wikipedia and it will ruin my life!", we can take the picture down. --Ruthven (msg) 12:26, 21 March 2017 (UTC)
@Ruthven: Ok, that gets more clear now, first it looked that actually such photes were not allowed in Brazil. So generally spoken in case that some individual sees him or herself on such image on wikipedia, it is basically a situation with Commons to take the picture down as a whole, cause itwas uploaded there. Then its not only about deleting it on wikipedia or getting in contact with wikipedia or other projects but with commons?--Joobo (talk) 10:01, 22 March 2017 (UTC)
@Joobo: If the file has to be deleted, it should be done where it was uploaded. Generally it's on Commons. --Ruthven (msg) 10:04, 22 March 2017 (UTC)
@Ruthven: So regarding my original question, it is not the Users who include the images in Wikipedia or other Wiki projects who get involved in case someone has a problem with this image, but its Commons/ the uploader on commons?--Joobo (talk) 10:18, 22 March 2017 (UTC)
@Joobo: If the deletion is requested, it will be dealt by the OTRS operator that processes it and the admin that deletes the file. --Ruthven (msg) 11:02, 22 March 2017 (UTC)

Is there an answer for that question?

I am still wondering what the circumstances are regarding this question. Or is there no answer to that? I would be happy for clarification. Otherwise i would appreciate some links to information sites or users who know about these issues regarding the usage of these images in the wiki sytem. --Joobo (talk) 11:55, 20 March 2017 (UTC)

I just noticed that there are two different files on Commons for showing the same thing: Countries with Pizza Hut restaurants. I work for the Box Moor Trust, the logo of which I have uploaded to Wikimedia to be featured on our Wikipedia page, which I am in the process of overhauling. I believe that it would fall under Fair Use, in much the same was as the National Trust logo does (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Trust_for_Places_of_Historic_Interest_or_Natural_Beauty). Whilst I've experience and am active on wikipedia, wikimedia is a world i'm unfamiliar with! Any help would be much appreciated!

--Mark49s (talk) 15:46, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons does not host media in fair use. The English-language Wikipedia hosts some non-free content. Please see en:Wikipedia:Non-free content. You can request the deletion of this file from Commons by inserting the template Speedydelete in its description page. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:31, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

Map resolution

Hello,

I need a higher resolution of Bayushkov's map (1890) of Lithuania and Belorus. How high of a resolution could I get?

38.117.156.204 17:59, 24 March 2017 (UTC)

  • Are we talking about File:BATYUSHKOV(1890) p591.jpg (Batyushkov, not Bayushkov) or something else? If you click through on the image there, you'll get 3,617 × 4,107 pixels, which is pretty decent. It looks to be a 300dpi scan. If you need higher, you'll have to track down the source & scan it yourself. - Jmabel ! talk 22:13, 24 March 2017 (UTC)

Is this website claim enough?

I have seen some images on this website [11] (but not all of these) on Commons. Assuming not all are from commons (and I can't find them all in the seemingly proper cats), is what the website says at the end of the article enough to say the are all free, and upload and under what licence? Alanscottwalker (talk) 20:18, 24 March 2017 (UTC)

@Alanscottwalker: No, it is not. There are Commons licenses that are incompatible with Commons, so we can't know which of them they chose. Also, it seems like they acquired the photos but did not do their due diligence in documenting which license(s) they had and following the requirements of that/those license(s). You may try contacting them directly. —Justin (koavf)TCM 20:32, 24 March 2017 (UTC)

Uploading Images from IMDB

Question, are you allowed to upload images from IMDB for use in Wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by AkkadOfSargon (talk • contribs) 00:24, 25 March 2017 (UTC)

Disambiguating genera

I noticed a couple genera categories that could use disambiguation and would like to make sure I do so properly.

We have Category:Adesmia, a genus of flower, and Category:Adesmia (Tenebrionidae), a genus of beetle. Wikispecies uses a disambiguation page here. What is the standard manner of naming such categories? It seems clear to me that the flower should be moved to a category with a parenthetical qualifier and replaced with a disambiguation, but what is the appropriate parenthetical? My inclination would be either (plant)/(insect) or, as Wikispecies does it, (ICBN)/(ICZN) for the different nomenclature types. Tenebrionidae is a family name, which seems like it would be of little help to most users, who won't know the respective family names in order to distinguish rather than clicking both. — Rhododendrites talk17:12, 25 March 2017 (UTC)

I have duplicated a file

Hello! I uploaded the image File: A.Gentileschi - Mother and child.jpg, the problem is that I first uploaded it on Wikipedia, then I realized that it would be better if the painting was in Commons, and I uploaded it again, but I made a mistake: I left exactly the same name. Could you delete the image that is not in Commons (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:A.Gentileschi_-_Mother_and_child.jpg)? Thank you!--Ane wiki (talk) 05:05, 29 March 2017 (UTC)

@Ane wiki: No problem. But for deletions at that edition of Wikipedia, you should post there. —Justin (koavf)TCM 05:10, 29 March 2017 (UTC)
Hi! I have seen the speedy deletion notice in the photo. Thanks! Should I make any changes to the article? Or by having the same name, the Commons file will be linked automatically?--Ane wiki (talk) 05:59, 29 March 2017 (UTC)
Yeah, it should be updated automatically --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 06:04, 29 March 2017 (UTC)

deleted an image that I photographed myself

1. Deleting images caused distortion in the articles.

2. Some of the images you deleted have special rights, but they are related to the articles topics.

3. Most of the images you deleted are commonly used on websites and newspapers.

4. You deleted an image that I photographed myself.

5. If Wikimedia continues deleting images, it will become a primitive Wikipedia.

6. Inserting images in the articles helps the reader to understand the discussion in the articles.

7. For example, this image was in an article discussing the movie’s idea : (إيرول_فلين.jpg)

8. If you see that I'm wrong, let me know how to get the license.

9. Tell me how to upload images, which will not be deleted later.

11. I want a detailed explanation about how to obtain a license to upload the image.

FOTO's UPLOADEN

  • @Jcb: I know you are around here a good bit & speak Dutch. - Jmabel ! talk 00:51, 28 March 2017 (UTC)

Raymond Sirjacobs (talk) 17:11, 28 March 2017 (UTC)

Raymond Sirjacobs (talk) 22:14, 28 March 2017 (UTC)

Dat staat op Commons:Bestanden hernoemen. --ghouston (talk) 23:47, 28 March 2017 (UTC)

Hi, Ddst40, why would you want your account to be deleted? Lotje (talk) 07:38, 28 March 2017 (UTC)

Hello, Lotje, It's not for delete my account . It's only for learning.--Ddst40 (talk) 09:13, 28 March 2017 (UTC)

You can't delete an account. You can stop using it and, if you like, you can get the name changed to something meaningless, but it looks like yours already is. - Jmabel ! talk 15:21, 28 March 2017 (UTC)

Licensing question

So, looking at a crappy machine translation of the conditions at http://gallica.bnf.fr/html/conditions-dutilisation-des-contenus-de-gallica ... I'm a little confused. The images themselves, like this one are from the 1800s and clearly in the public domain, but the conditions say that there may be a charge for (per google translate) the resale of content in the form of elaborate products or the provision of services. So...it reads like its licensed for non-commerical use, but I'm not sure if it matters if the image itself is public domain. I mean, they can't arbitrarily re-license a 150 year old photo out of the public domain...right? TimothyJosephWood 16:02, 28 March 2017 (UTC)

Hi Timothyjosephwood,
These restrictions are probably copyfraud, and have never been validated in courts. Google has a similar warning for their scans, and we don't care. We follow copyright law, not restrictions imposed by various institutions. Regards, Yann (talk) 16:17, 28 March 2017 (UTC)
Awesome. Looks like I have some uploading to do. TimothyJosephWood 16:21, 28 March 2017 (UTC)

Editing Family Trees

The Nehru Gandhi Family tree on Wikepedia has a few incorrect items and a few omissions. How can these be corrected? The "edit" function shows a complex template.

help me someone

hello , how to made a upload on commons that hidden from all user , only show me , only for practice or test?--Ddst40 (talk) 06:48, 30 March 2017 (UTC)

Short answer: you can’t. Nothing on this wiki is private to individual users.
You can use your sandbox (or any page in your user area) to practise writing file descriptions, making galleries, using templates and so on, but there’s no equivalent testing area for media files. Uploading is actually pretty simple; you might start with a photo or other graphic for your own user page—nobody will care much about the content, as long as it‘s not a copyright violation, highly offensive, or otherwise against the site’s TOU. (Normally everything you upload should have educational value, but users are allowed some latitude to personalize their ‘home page‘ if they wish.) Regardless, everything you do here is publicly visible (and permanently recorded).—Odysseus1479 (talk) 07:19, 30 March 2017 (UTC)

Local Wikipedia Upload instead of Commons Upload

Hello there! I know that all Wikipedians agreed to disable any small wiki Upload because of many violation of copyright as of stated in our Village Pump. But is there any other way to upload a copyright file like(which now just been deleted from Commons) for my upcoming contribution of w:en:Boruto: Naruto Next Generations for Malay Wikipedia. It feels not right for not having any single picture in our language article. For me, I got only one way to do that:

  1. Can I uses mine or others released copyright drawing to replace the original copyright picture like? SNN95 (talk) 10:27, 30 March 2017 (UTC)
  • I don't think all Wikipedians ever agreed on anything. Ever.
  • I am uncertain what you mean by "a copyright file"; maybe a file with copyrighted content that is not released under a free license? That cannot be on Commons. I have no idea whether the Malay Wikipedia allows local uploads, and whether it might have a non-free use provision comparable to the English-language Wikipedia. But that is an issue you'd have to take up on the Malay Wikipedia, not here on Commons.
  • I'm also not sure what you mean by "mine or others released copyright drawing," but if it's your drawing, how would it be an appropriate illustration for the article, unless you are one of the artists who created the work the article is about? - Jmabel ! talk 23:19, 30 March 2017 (UTC)

Facebook Picture Upload

Am able to upload a picture taken from Facebook? The picture is of an individual who spoke at a conference at a school. I am just wondering whether this violates the copyright rules. I believe once pictures are uploaded on facebook, they become usable.

Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lloyd55 (talk • contribs) 19:48, 30 March 2017 (UTC)

@Lloyd55: Hi,
No. Like for every picture, you need a permission from the photographer. Regards, Yann (talk) 19:54, 30 March 2017 (UTC)
More specifically, putting a picture on FaceBook does not mean giving a license to anyone except FaceBook to reuse the picture. - Jmabel ! talk 23:22, 30 March 2017 (UTC)
Moreover that licence expires when or if the picture is removed from their site, while we require licences to remain in effect for perpetuity (or at least until the underlying copyright lapses).—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:30, 31 March 2017 (UTC)

Any worth uploading?

I took these photos (OneDrive link) at the en:San Diego Air and Space Museum annex at en:Gillespie field. Are any of them worth uploading? The blue aircraft w/ en:contra-rotating propellers is a en:Douglas A2D Skyshark The photos include a few aircraft, engines, and views inside the restoration facility. Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 10:11, 29 March 2017 (UTC)

  • Any of these would be useful. All other things being equal, if the tradeoff is between uploading more photos and taking time to describe and categorize them well, the latter is more important. - Jmabel ! talk 15:15, 29 March 2017 (UTC)
  • Yes. Your photos of, say, the Atlas rocket are certainly better than the tiny panoramio files, or the oddly cropped File:Atlas 2E Ballistic Missile.jpg. Just skip exact duplicates. Retired electrician (talk) 16:20, 29 March 2017 (UTC)
  • @Jim1138: - Absolutely! Be bold and upload them! Of particular use are details about each photo, so provide as much as you can, and that will help others to categorize and use them correctly. Users who are focused on aviation can help with sorting them in categories and identifying any that might be duplication. Josh (talk) 22:58, 29 March 2017 (UTC)

I have uploaded a number of photos. Any suggestions? Please leave a message on my talk page? Cheers Jim1138 (talk) 11:12, 31 March 2017 (UTC)
