Hello, ליאור!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Pay attention to copyright
File:Insect DSC05489.JPG has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Please don't remove speedy deletion tags. If you are the author of the image and wish to use it on Commons, you will need to change the license here to one compatible with Commons. See also: Commons:OTRS. ZooFari 23:32, 23 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I am the author of those images, and I have clarified on the album description that "I have uploaded some of these photos to Wikimedia Commons under free licenses". I will not release the entire album under a free license, as individuals are also pictured in it and they might not like their photos to hover around the internet freely. The speedy deletion tag is clearly inappropriate, as this is clearly not an obvious case of copyright violation (it's my photo, I was there, I took it). Same goes for all other photos in Category:Xixuaú-Xiparinã Reserve.
Furthermore, I have edited my pictures before uploading them to Commons (cropping, sharprening, etc.). It's perfectly fine to release one version of my own photo under a free license, while keeping the rights for other versions. ליאור (talk) 10:34, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If you are going to complicate the process this way, I suggest you don't link the original image at Picasa. After all, it's worthless. It doesn't make sense to me how you choose to reserve the rights of an original image and freely license a derivative work. ZooFari 00:28, 25 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A phantom frog, also called ghoast frog is... - I do not belief, that there is any frog on the photo, I think this is a joke?! If you see the frog, please write into the description where to find (to find this out was the reason of the phantom frog), thanks. --Kürschner (talk) 06:49, 22 July 2010 (UTC).[reply]

There is a frog in this photo, regardless of your personal beliefs. This blog, for instance, posted my photo, and an image clarifying where the frog was posted there soon afterwards. Kindly avoid placing photos into irrelevant categories just because you think they're funny. Thanks, ליאור (talk) 19:40, 22 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Nice joke (of you!) - there is no frog. Your link to the blog is not helpful, the link does not work, I see an Hebrew side. I think, I will put this here on the discussion pages of the images.--Kürschner (talk) 20:10, 22 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand your English, so I'll only ask you for the last time to be polite and respectful towards the contributions of others. ליאור (talk) 20:35, 22 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for my English. I do not find your answers much polite- and respectful, sorry. Maybe it's my bad English... And there is no frog.--Kürschner (talk)
With a little help of my friends - we found the frog. Pardon.--Kürschner (talk) 11:08, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Moti Giladi & Nissim Guerma[edit]

Hi ליאור,
I don't think File:Moti Giladi & Nissim Guerma (1).JPG is a good shot, as both people seem to be surprised and don't seem to be glad about being photographed. As we have better images of both, would you mind the deletion of this image? --Túrelio (talk) 22:13, 18 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Túrelio,
I have asked them both for their permission to be photographed to Wikipedia and they have gladly agreed. I agree that this is not such a good shot, which is exactly why I took two other shots (1,2) right afterwards. Do with it as you see fit. Good night, ליאור (talk) 22:20, 18 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thanks for the compliment, ity means all the more when you are working with strangers and cannot see tem. I hope to improve historical computer-based maps all over the Commons and came accross the original (English) version to this file and then thought I could help by expanding into languages other than my own. Is the map correct now? Please let me know on my talk page, thank you. Maps & Lucy (talk) 01:02, 10 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

A note for you[edit]

Note

We don't welcome web trolls here on Wiki. You have a chance to learn how to edit collaboratively, avoid nonsense edits and manifest good faith. While you have been previously guided to use our discussion fora such as the Village Pump, categories' talk pages or CFD to get your dispute heard, this repeated edit is rather not meeting any good benefit for you or for the category. I think this place is being quite patient with you. It's a silly idea to wear it out. Orrlingtalk 15:00, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You're considered a troll banned from editing the Hebrew Wikipedia ([1]). Your persistent criminal activity has lead to your banning off several Israeli internet providers ([2]). Your lengthy block log, your talk page and your "contributions" to Commons all indicate you're here to make trouble. You know that, I know that, but I write it here in case someone misunderstands your "note". So let's make it clear: Whenever you're allowed to edit in Wikimedia, do not harass me further. ליאור (talk) 15:40, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Israeli police shooting stunt grenades at fleeing Israeli citizens demonstrating in Rabin Square, Tel Aviv, Israel.ogv. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Thanks for uploading File:Blood insurance fraud 2018.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Yours sincerely, Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 17:27, 14 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Magog,
As clearly stated under the license header of the said file, this publicly advertised 2D artwork is in the public domain, under the Israeli 2007 Copyright Act. Please see Commons:Copyright_rules_by_territory/Israel#Freedom_of_panorama. In particular, it is an ad for a public blood donation event that has been printed and posted in public places in the Israeli city of Yavne, and is still available well after the event has ended.
The same logic holds for File:Blood insurance fraud - 2019.jpg - A similar ad for a similar blood donation event at Eilon kibbutz, Israel.
Please clarify what further explanations may be helpful. ליאור (talk) 18:30, 14 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
FoP is a restriction tag, not a license. Files need to be licensed. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 19:58, 14 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Magog the Ogre: I've added a PD-Israel license, as per above. Thanks! ליאור (talk) 20:28, 14 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@JuTa: Thank you for contacting me. Please see the above description of the public domain status of the said artworks. Thanks, ליאור (talk) 07:23, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The PD-Israel license does not apply, because they are not older than 51 years, as reqzuired by the license. --JuTa 07:28, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@JuTa: OK So which particular public domain license is applicable for a digital version of a printed ad posted in public places in Israel? Please note that the Israeli FoP clearly includes "a work of art that is meant to deliver useful information", as in these ads for blood donation events. Thanks, ליאור (talk) 07:51, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The internet in *not* counted as a public place for COM:FOP. Generally only outdoor locations like streets are covered by FOP. I'm sorry, but I guess there is no suitable free license for your case. You may try to ask the Webowners if they are willing to publish these images under a free license (i.e. ). If they agree they confirm that by mailing to the commons support team as documented on Commons:OTRS. Once you know the mail has been sent, you better place to the file description pages. This will prevent deletion for about a month or until the release has been confirmed by an OTRS volounteer. regards --JuTa 09:37, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@JuTa: I am well aware of the difference between freedom of panorama in the actual world and saving an image posted somewhere on the internet. May I reiterate the fact that these are ads that were printed and published at public places in Israel (Yavne city and Eilon kibbutz), outside of the exclusive realm of the web. Which is why, to the best of my understanding, copies of these ads are now in the public domain, in accordance with section 23 of Israeli copyright law. ליאור (talk) 10:03, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
If you take a photo of such a poster (including some "surroundings"), it may be covered by FOP. In most countries posters are *not* covered by FOP because they are not permanently. But just copying the image from a website is definitly not FOP. So: If you got out, find such a poster and take a photo of it. This you can try to upload with FoP-Israel and a free license of your choice. --JuTa 10:08, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Blood insurance fraud 2018.png.

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Blood insurance fraud 2018.png) and the above demanded information in your request.

File:Litvak Report.pdf has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
