Can we fix this error with script (error in my username in some uploads)?

Seems that for a few days my Commonist had an error and was uploading my files with UserLPiotrus instead of User:Piotrus attribution. Can we fix it through some kind of script? List of affected files is here. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 19:43, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

  • (1) Are you are an image reviewer? (2) If so, isn't it a bit unusual to review your own upload? I would think you would mark it for review and have someone else review it. (3) But that also requires providing a link to the source, which is still missing.
  • So, no, I don't think you should simply remove the {{No permission since}} notice at this point. I imagine you are correct that the image is ultimately valid under precisely the license you've stated, but please indicate the source (a URL, not just "UNESCO"). - Jmabel ! talk 07:33, 1 February 2017 (UTC)
The problem was never a missing license, but missing evidence of permission to publish the document under that license. The file itself actually contains some licensing information, and if that information had stated that the contents were free, all that would have been needed would be a verifiable source URL for the file. Unfortunately, according to the information in the file, it's actually a mix of free and non-free content. Page 4 of the file states:

This publication is available in Open Access under the Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 IGO (CC-BY-SA 3.0 IGO) license (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/igo/). By using the content of this publication, the users accept to be bound by the terms of use of the UNESCO Open Access Repository (http://www.unesco.org/open-access/terms-use-ccbysa-en).

but also:

(*) Images marked with an asterisk do not fall under the CC-BY-SA licence and may not be used or reproduced without the prior permission of the copyright holders.

Since the document contains non-free content (and a lot of it, including the front page), it cannot be hosted on Commons. Also, as mentioned, you are not a license reviewer, so you should not be marking uploads as reviewed. —LX (talk, contribs) 17:11, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

File:RibosomeProfilejpg.jpg thumb different than full image

Hi again folks! Previously, I had uploaded a version of this file with multi-colored "amino acids" in the growing protein coming from the ribosomes. After learning about color policies at wp, I made a new image with almost all black "amino acids". I uploaded it to the commons as a replacement. As you can see if you look at the file history, I'm making a mockery of the process. Last I looked, I can see the "black" version in thumbnails, but the big image still has the multiple colors. Even the wp page Ribosome profiling has the black thumbnail, but clicking on it gives the multicolor version. sigh. Can you please help? Thanks, DennisPietras (talk) 21:14, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

Mass upload of my images

Hi there,

I have a lot of images which I am willing to share under CC-BY-SA-3.0.

These images are primarily of gemstones, fossils, and minerals. Some will, in all likelihood, not be suitable for usage.

As stock passes through my business, more images are created, so this is an ongoing thing. (a hundred a month, on average)

  • Ruslik aimed you the right place and I'd like to add that, yes, there are several ways to do this that should meet your needs. I've done well with Commonist, but I also have sometimes found it easier to first upload to Flickr (which is probably better for mass uploads than Commons) and then use Flickr2Commons to bring images over to Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 23:47, 31 January 2017 (UTC)

Missing sources in historical (1820s, 1830s) poetry collections

I am compiling collections of poetry from the 1820s-1830s period from scans of contemporary sources. In a small number of cases, I do not have access to such a source but I do have a transcription from a modern edition (F.J.Sypher. Poems from Annuals, by Letitia Elizabeth Landon). I would like my compilations to be complete, but should I: 1. Leave the poem out until a contemporary source becomes available? 2. Include the transcription as text? 3 Include the transcription as a scanned document? Note: These collections are to be indexed into Wikisource. Permission from non-wiki author

I want to release a couple of photos using the {{PD-author|author}} tag. I have the permission of the copyright holder but I believe I need to pass this information to Commons and I can't find out where and how to supply this information. What would help would be a form that he could fill in and that I could forward to you. Is such a form available and if not, would it be possible to provide one? I know last time I tried to do this I had a problem but wanted to know how to get the statement to you before starting the upload. His current email to me says "I am happy for you to publish the 2 photographs in Wikipedia" but I know that's not enough but don't want to waste his time (he's a surgeon). Logo for the Royal Tennis Hall of Stockholm

Hello,

I am employed by above tennis club and well within my right to modify, use or change the following Logo: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wiki-logga.png. We designed it, we created it and i guess that it is us who are responsible for it. I have talked to our virtual designer to work out all the kinks with the logo so that it clearly is a free and Wiki-friendly image.

Is this enough to get it republished or will i have to do something more?

  • @Erikwelin: Actually, the relevant rights seem to me to be a bit unclear. I'm sure the club has any relevant trademark rights, but typically (I don't know Swedish law) copyright remains with the artist unless overtly signed over, so you might not be in a position to release under CC-By-SA.
  • Assuming the copyright does belong to the club, not the artist, we'd need a release via email as explained in COM:OTRS. That's because this has been previously published, and without a release like that anyone could come along and claim to represent the club and upload something like this (or any other intellectual property of the club). - Jmabel ! talk 16:34, 2 February 2017 (UTC)

  • Follow up with email as suggested at COM:OTRS. Assuming you have a document assigning you the rights, a photocopy of that should probably be attached. If they need to get back to you for clarification, they will. As I understand it, they have about a month backlog right now, so it may be a while before they get to you.
  • In the future, if you are uploading an image that has been previously published, you can do the OTRS email at the same time you upload, and mark the image with {{OTRS pending}}. Typically, this will assure that the image doesn't get deleted while things are being sorted out. Request for deletion of non-free screenshot

Hello all.

The screenshot PNG shown is not free. I uploaded it yesterday in the belief that the originating software was under a BSD license. But email correspondence with the author Stefan Pfenninger today shows that the web programming is indeed proprietary. Can someone therefore please delete this image. Sorry for the mix-up.

For the record, I have uploaded a similar screenshot released under a Creative Commons BY 4.0 license. That JPG should, of course, remain. File:Renewables ninja photovoltaics and wind energy database screenshot showing simulated pv output.jpg.

(side note) It seems like Category:User needing help is not being actively watched by anyone on this wiki, which is a shame. I just cleared it out, some people had been waiting for help since September 2016.

For copyrighted content to be hosted on Commons, the copyright holder must have agreed to publication under a license that allows anyone to use, modify and redistribute the content for any purpose, including commercial purposes. Quality image seal not showing in some images

Feeling confused about couple of images.

This image has got positive feedback and is showing at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Quality_images#People but the image page still does not have quality image seal. It was submitted and reviewed on 27th January.

Same is true for

It is showing at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Quality_images#Objects

Info to add

Several years ago I visited Montenegro and near the village of Zabljak in the northern regions, I was taken by taxi to a site called Kut, amidst the forestry plantations.(It's unmarked on Google maps) From here it was possible to get an amazing view of the deepest part of the Tara canyon. Today, when I searched Google to see if Kut was mentioned I found nothing there. Up loading jpeg photos to the HP 42 page

Yesterday I uploaded 2 photos of the Handley Page 42 to the HP 42 page. They appeared to have uploaded successfully as they appeared on the said page in all my devices. However, I noticed a few hours later they had been removed from the HP 42 page. Can you help or explain please?   • When you say you "uploaded... to the HP 42 page" I'm guessing you mean a page in the English-language Wikipedia. Here on Commons, we're just concerned with hosting the photo. Whether it is to be in a particular article or not is something you'll have to take up in the English-language Wikipedia, probably on the talk page of the relevant article. I will remark that trying to put the photos before the infobox is a pretty certain way to get someone to change what you did. It would appear that in this case Nigel Ish simply reverted your addition. But, as I say, if you want to discuss it, the talk page of the article would be the place to do that. - 04:43, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Which is to say, for example, in most countries you can't upload pictures of someone else's artwork, and in a handful you can't upload pictures of buildings that are still in copyright, if the building constitutes a significant part of the interest of the photo. Help in categorizing an unidentified brand

Hi! I was browsing Category:Unidentified brands and I was able to find some information about File:Para post.jpg on Facebook. It appears to be (it was) a small food & beverage company from en:Trujillo, Peru. I guess it could be Category:Brands of Peru but I'm not sure. Could anybody help me please? Thanks. Upload Wizard not working

@Bubba73: Can you elaborate how is it "not working"? I just tried uploading an 18 MB photo and it worked fine. Please copy any error messages you see, or upload a screenshot. If the files you're uploading are available somewhere else on the Internet, please link them, maybe there's a problem specific to them. Matma Rex (talk) 21:28, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
This was happening last night and it happened every time I tried it (at least three times). I would tell it to upload and nothing would happen. No error message was given, just nothing happened. Image not uploading

Hi, I am creating a wikipedia query and trying to upload an image of the person I am creating the query for but the photo is not accepeted. I have full copy rights of the photo by the person who took it and the person who is in it. What should I do?

  1. I have no idea what you mean by a "wikipedia query".
  2. When you say, "I have full copy rights of the photo by the person who took it and the person who is in it", I take it you are not the photographer, so we will need a release as described in COM:OTRS.
  3. You don't say what tool you are uploading with, but some cannot handle a case like this (uploading someone else's photo). In the circumstances, I recommend Special:Upload, not the easiest but the most general. Remember to (1) indicate the actual author, (2) have email sent as described in COM:OTRS, (3) use the same license on the photo as is specified in the email, and (4) in your upload, include the {{OTRS pending}} tag so that it will be given a grace period for the OTRS process to be completed. - Jmabel ! talk 16:49, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Pavel Kanygin.jpg

  • My Russian is very minimal, but there seem to me to be two contradictory statements on that page. On the one hand "Приветствуется перепечатка материалов, при условии размещения активной гиперссылки на издание www.mymedia.org.ua" seems to grant broad permission (though it's not clear that it says anything about reusing photos, and it's not clear that it allows derivative versions of those photos), but then it also says "© Все права защищены". Doesn't that mean "All rights reserved"? It seems to me that with this lack of clarity, you should contact the site-owner and go through the COM:OTRS process to get them to grant a specific, commonly recognized license for the photo. - Jmabel ! talk 23:06, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Unable to provide copyright info

Hi,

I obtained a number of images from www.amazon.com/pr. The pages themselves clearly mention that the images can be used with proper citation for editorial purpose - http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=176060&p=irol-imageproduct31. I was conveyed the same information by email from Amazon's HR department as well:


Based on this, I uploaded some images, one being https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Amazon_Fire_TV_with_Voice_Remote_and_Game_Controller.jpg. Because these images are free to use for editorial purpose without changing them and with explicit referencing, I included the tag

with the caption Non-derivative uses only, for editorial purposes.

The “for editorial purposes“ condition is also a problem; we have to permit use for any purpose (despite the principal mission of supporting educational uses). The above conditions amount to barely more licence than is already allowed under fair use/ fair dealing in most countries, even when “all rights [are] reserved“, and are nothing like a PD or CC0 release.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 18:00, 29 January 2017 (UTC)

I don’t think that response amounts to a free licence at all, and they don‘t directly answer the question about ND; even their consent to the last part is only implicit at best. Unfortunately your mention of Wikipedia-only and educational use just clouded the issue, because we simply don’t allow those conditions on Commons. It certainly appears you have their blessing to upload their images to the English Wikipedia—but if you do, you will still have to supply a fair-use rationale, because even Wikipedia treats material that only has permission “for Wikipedia” as non-free content. It will only be considered “free“ with an explicit statement that anyone can use the content for any purpose. In case you’ll be corresponding with them again in an effort to get the files hosted here, I would recommend including a link to a CC licence that we do accept, not one we don’t, and asking them to state they understand the terms and wish to release the content accordingly (which should be identified as specifically as possible; “our press images” is on the vague side). In that case, I would like to include all the images with a fair use rationale on the English Wikipedia page only, the rationale being that I have been granted permission to use the images on Wikipedia by the owners of this image. The site you are on is Wikimedia Commons, a repository of free, educational media files used by Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, and others. It happens to be a wiki, but we host media files; pages are outside our project scope. There is no connection between this site and Nestlé.
If you are looking to add content to some internal wiki at your company, you should probably ask your colleagues. If you are looking to set up an internal wiki, you may wish to have a look at Mediawiki, the wiki software that powers Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia. If by "Wiki", you mean "Wikipedia" and you are looking to add content to Wikipedia, then (a) you're on the wrong project and (b) you should head over to Wikipedia and read en:Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure before doing anything else. —LX (talk, contribs) 10:21, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Okay, I tagged them as copyright violations, since there is no particular reason to believe that these photos are in the public domain (as they are obviously quite recent in terms of copyright, which usually lasts at least 70 years after the death of the photographer) or that the copyright holder has agreed to publication under a free license. Clearly, despite the claims you made when uploading, you are not the author of the photographs. Please read Commons:Project scope/Summary and Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter#Internet images to understand what you can and cannot upload to this site.
Incidentally, File:One of the last photographs of Ludwig Wittgenstein.jpg is an inferior copy of a file that already exists on Commons, File:Wittgenstein-von-Wright.jpg, but I have my doubts about the PD claims made regarding that file, so I will nominate it for a deletion discussion. —LX (talk, contribs) 10:43, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Verifying Authenticity of License Holder

We have been contacted by an entity that claims to hold the license of a photo we used in one of our company blogs. They are claiming we did not include proper attribution language when we used the photo, and are now demanding we pay them for its past use. Is it a photo you reused from here (Wikimedia Commons), please link or tell what file it is. That will make it easier to give an answer. You can: 1) Look at the page of the file, where the author wrote the information. In particular, look who uploaded the file, who the author is, what license is specified and what specific language the author specified for the attribution. 2) Look if the page includes a link to the actual author's website or mail. Follow the link to the user's personal page on Commons and see if you find more information there. If you find that the author has provided reliable contact information somewhere, you may want to contact the author using that information. If you have an account on Commons and if the user enabled the email option, you might try to contact the user that way. Compare the information you found about the author and the information you have from the person who contacted you. 3) If you come to the conclusion that the communication is legitimate, then follow the link to the text of the license and read in particular the text of the requirements for attribution, if any. 4) Keeping to mind those requirements of the license, compare the attribution language that was specified on the page by the author with the attribution language you used in your blog. Decide if a reasonable person would likely come to the conclusion that your use met the requirements of the license or not. The conclusion will of course depend on the specific facts of the case: what the author had specified, what license was used, how loose or strict the clauses of that license are regarding the attribution language, how reasonably your use meets those clauses. You will have to decide, or if in doubt consult a legal professional. If the license is one of the Creative Commons (CC) licenses, the CC FAQ on their website, although not binding, might also help. I have downloaded the file and modified it. I would like to upload the modified version per the share alike qualification, but I am not sure where to do so, and I cannot contact Mr. Ferrari because the link associated with his name indicates: "Wikimedia Commons does not currently have a user page called Manfredo Ferrari."

Can you tell me where I can upload the revised image so I can provide Mr. Ferrari with the credit due him?

Where to upload may depend on the type of modification you made. You can see the page Commons:Overwriting existing files for more information. If in doubt, upload to a different filename of your choice. If you do so, link to the original file in the source field, credit the original author in the author field. Also mention somewhere the modification you made. You can insert the Template:Retouched picture. You can use the user's talk page, even if he doesn't have a user page. Map

Hi!

I tried to modify a map to update some data, but when I uploaded it to replace the old one, it seems like it's exactly the same.

The map appears different on my desktop but then when I upload it it's the same as the older one as if I hadn't made any changes.

Do you why this might happen?

  • Looks distinct to me; you probably just have a caching issue.
  • Looks like you uploaded 4 times, and the versions you uploaded are identical to one another.
  • Click through from the versions in the file history and you should be able to see the difference. - Jmabel ! talk 22:00, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Upload Wizard stopped working

I'm using the Upload Wizard on Firefox (v. 51.0.1) and it stopped working some 16 hours ago. I thought it would come right but it hasn't. I've restarted the laptop but that hasn't cured it. On the 'Upload' tab, I get a choice of 'Select media files to share' and 'Share images from Flickr'. If I select the former option, I can still choose the files I want to upload, but when I hit ok, it goes to a view where usually, the photos start appearing and the upload progress can be seen, but nothing happens. Flickr upload continues to be fine. When I use Chrome, it works as usual. So the problem is related to Firefox. Any ideas what needs doing? Schwede66 18:56, 28 January 2017 (UTC)

I'm sorry I can't answer this, but I've another question: There is an 'Share images from Flickr' button? I don't see any, neither with FF nor with Chrome. Are you sure or did I get something wrong? I want to upload an video from Flickr (which needs converting, too). Or is it working for you again?

@Schwede66: Can you upload a screenshot of how the interface looks like when it locks up? (For example at https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/file/upload/) Can you also upload there a copy of the file you're trying to upload here? Do you see any error messages in the browser's error console? If you installed any new browser extensions recently, can you try disabling them temporarily and seeing if that fixes the issue? @Matma Rex: Had trouble logging into Meta-Wiki and have uploaded it to Commons (probably in breach of all sorts of rules - sorry). To the right is the view I get immediately after hitting the 'Upload' button. Note the "1 of 1 file uploaded" notice; it wouldn't have had enough time to upload anything in that millisecond that it takes for that screen to appear. And no, I haven't installed any extensions recently, and there are just two in that list: Firefogg (which you need for uploading videos to Commons) and an extension that has automatically been disabled (Toshiba Fingerprint utility). I can't even remove the latter because it doesn't give me the usual 'Disable' or 'Remove' buttons. But to my knowledge, that got disabled many many months ago. And I've had Firefogg for some years now. I've tried uploading a random jpg from a series of photos; nothing wrong with it because photos from that series upload fine using Chrome. @Schwede66: Thanks, that's good to know. I couldn't reproduce the problem with Firefox 52 myself, though :/ (whether with Firefogg installed or not). I tried to look up your issue in the error logs, though, and I did find an exception from Firefox logged yesterday between 23:30-00:00, which is presumably you, where the error message is just "NS_ERROR_UNEXPECTED: ". As you can imagine that's not very helpful for debugging the problem :)
Can you try doing this again, but this time, before you try uploading, open Firefox's "Web Console" (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Tools/Web_Console/Opening_the_Web_Console). After the upload fails, you should see an error message there starting with "NS_ERROR_UNEXPECTED" – click the "expand" arrow to the left of it, and copy-paste the details here, please. @Schwede66: Thanks, and sorry for late response. So the error message comes from our Firefogg code… can you try disabling it? This is honestly looking like a Firefogg and/or Firefox bug. (And since Firefox is about to stop supporting Firefogg and similar extensions – see https://blog.mozilla.org/addons/2016/11/23/add-ons-in-2017/ and https://firefogg.org/ – I doubt either party would be interested in looking into this. Before Firefogg, I shagged around for a long time before I found a piece of software that could do the video conversion for the strange file format that my camera was producing. With Firefogg, this was all easy and straightforward. How to report copyright violations

I expected to find on the home page or at least on this page a hot button to report copyvios??

Anyway, I want to report File:Milton keynes Expansion Plan.jpg as almost certainly a copyvio and highly unlikely to be the 'own work' of the contributor. It is not necessary to register to nominate a file for deletion. how to reference the data a diagram/map is sourced on?

I may be daft, but I don't understand how to include the source into the tag.

Subcategories are simply categories that are placed within another category, the same way as files are placed in categories. "Upload a new version of this file" not working

I've been trying to add some arrows in File:MRI Location Hippocampus up..png, and despite having tried several times, the images does not show them. I can actually see the arrows in previous versions of the image under the "File history" section (such as this one), but the latest one always remains the old version. Quite often it’s not a client-side problem with the browser, but that the image servers haven’t rendered new previews yet. Viewing or downloading the actual file will verify the upload, regardless of the thumbnail displays. Sometimes purging the page will refresh them; they usually get updated in a matter of minutes to hours anyway.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 20:46, 12 February 2017 (UTC)

  • You are welcome to upload the new coat of arms with a new file name—if the copyright issues can be clarified (probably by an email, as described in COM:OTRS, from the designer of the new coat of arms)—and use that in a Wikipedia article, but Commons should retain the old one, just like (for example) we retain former flags of countries.

uploading a picture for which I have permission

Hello!

I wish to use an illustration in the Wikipedia page on my home town, Helensburgh – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helensburgh

You will see towards the foot of the article that there is a section entitled "future developments", and in this I write about the new leisure centre, and in particular the concept designs produced by the late Gareth Hoskins. This design was part of a paper which he produced for Argyll & Bute Council, and which was (and may still well be) on their website.

From the emails accompanying this one you will see that I have been in touch with one of the partners in Gareth's firm and he has granted me permission to use the illustration.

However I am not certain as to how to complete the upload documentation, and I would appreciate help. Thank you!

I have been updating the Wikipedia entry for Helensburgh recently, and I have included a small reference to the concept drawing which Gareth produced for the Helensburgh pierhead development.

I would like to be able to include the drawing itself in the Wikipedia page, but I need your permission to do so. If you are willing to grant this, can you please advise me what caption and credit I should put on it – should it be to Gareth, or to Hoskins Architects, or to something else? I attach the drawing in question.

Here's the bit of text that I have written: "Given the importance of the location for the new leisure centre, it is hoped that a building of outstanding design will be constructed. An internationally renowned local architect, the late Gareth Hoskins, produced some concept designs for the new buildings. Final designs from a range of architects are awaited."

  • I'm afraid you need to go at this a little differently.
    • Generic permission like this is unfortunately not sufficient: we need a specific free license. The main problem is that nothing in the above makes it clear that general reuse, derivative versions, etc. are OK.
    • Also, if the copyright holder is not the uploader we need them to email us (more specifically, to email the OTRS team); it sounds like you are already in touch with the copyright holder, so that should be easy.

Multi-lingual descriptions

{{Mul}} I wanted to use this template in the same manner that I would use {{En}} in the Description field of {{Information}} for File:(R)-3-phenyl-cyclohanone.gif but {{Mul}} does not provide a multi-lingual description field but a drop-down menu for several different language descriptions. I think it’s easier to tell, where you want to add such a description. With LangSwitch you will see text only in your active language setting, as long as there is text in this language included into the template, or text in the default language (preferable English), if not. Try this in Commons:Sandbox with different language settings (at least one, that has no text here): {{LangSwitch |en=''English'' text |de='''deutscher''' Text |es=texto español}} (I’m es-0, but I hope it’s right). For usage of {{LangSwich}} see Search results for "hastemplate:LangSwitch". You can confine the results there yourself. @Speravir: I don't want several descriptions in several languages--I want one description which is universal. E.g. Chemical formulae or mathematical notation. It depends on the nature of the modifications and other circumstances. Minor changes can be uploaded as a new revision of the existing diagram. More substantial changes should be uploaded under a new name, allowing articles on other projects to be updated to use that file if and where there is consensus to do so. In order to upload files, you will have to be logged in. To avoid vandalism, completely new accounts are not immediately able to update existing files.
Discussion of changes may be conducted on the existing file's talk page, on the uploader's user talk page, or the talk page of the article in which it is used, whichever is more appropriate for the specific circumstances. —LX (talk, contribs) 11:16, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

Failed in "Upload a new version" of a file

Tried to upload a new version of the file Firmenlogo_HRworks_GmbH.png cause the software relaunched its logo. I failed 6 times. The file I want to be shown as current is marked as revent... and that 6 times. Can somebody delete the unnecessary datas and tell me how to actually update the logo? It wouldn't really mean anything to "delete" them. All deletions are "soft" because admins need to be able to see the old versions, so deleting doesn't save any server space. The only difference when intermediate versions of a file are "deleted" is that ordinary users can't see that part of the file history. - Jmabel ! talk 16:11, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

Adding additional licensing information

I have just uploaded a public domain image. On the page, under the "Licensing" heading, I got this text, "The official position taken by the Wikimedia Foundation is that "faithful reproductions of two-dimensional public domain works of art are public domain". This photographic reproduction is therefore also considered to be in the public domain in the United States. In other jurisdictions, re-use of this content may be restricted; see Reuse of PD-Art photographs for details." and then the following in red: "{{PD-Art}} template without license parameter: please specify why the underlying work is public domain in both the source country and the United States". The painter is French and he died in 1904, so the work is in the public domain. Yes, it is the idea. When uploading to Commons any image of a public domain work, you must specify the reasons why the work is in the public domain in the United States and in the public domain in the country of origin. So, you decide the reasons, and then you use the Commons template(s) that express those reasons. If you use one of the variants of the template PD-Art, then you insert the reasons as parameters instead of separate templates. It depends in part where the painting was first published, but if it was in France, then the string can be, for example, {{PD-Art-two|PD-old-100|PD-1923}}. Do not forget to specify also the source of the particular reproduction you are uploading and the license, if any, that the source attributes to that reproduction. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:42, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

Changing CC license to public domain

If I create a work and make it available on commons.wikimedia.org under a CC license, can I subsequently release it into the public domain? If so, what is the process for doing so?

  • While the prior license should remain, because CC licenses are not revocable, you can dual license it with CC-0, which is effectively a release into the public domain. So, for example, where you have {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0}} you would change that to {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0|cc-0}}
I disagree. Either the work is released or it's not. If the author willingly releases one of his works to the public domain, then that work is in the public domain. The author can't, at the same time, on the one hand, say that the work has no copyright and, on the other hand, continue to claim the copyright and offer an incompatible license to new reusers or demand application of past licenses. If a user states incompatible statuses, he contradicts himself. Well, the nature of the irrevocability clause is that a licensor can't tell a licensee "you can't use my work anymore". I don't think that the nature of the clause is to force a licensor to claim copyright forever. He can renounce to his own right. I'm afraid that's the point over which we disagree. There would be not only an ambiguity but an incompatibility. One of the two statements would be false. Releasing a work to the public domain is not the same as merely adding a licensing option. Stating that the work is now irrevocably in the public domain excludes the possibility of still claiming the right to offer a license on it. If a reuser has already reused the work somewhere before the change, or if a new reuser gets it from an intermediate reuse, and is unaware of the change of status of the work, and uses the work as if it were under CC by-sa, that's understandable and no harm is done. If someone checks the status at the source on Commons, they can see in the history that the work has legitimately been changed by the author from CC by-sa to public domain. However, the crucial point is that the author who himself, now, states, on the description page on Commons, the present status of the work, is necessarily aware of his own intention and decision. He can't state that the work is both "not under copyright" (i.e. irrevocably released with CC0 to the public domain or the closest equivalent depending on the country) and "under copyright" (i.e. still claiming copyright and offering to license the work under CC by-sa). Like someone can't eat their cake and still have it whole. If the author released the work to the PD, knowing what he was doing, then he can't offer a license. If he states contradictory statuses, then it's indicative that he may not have known what he was doing and we should consider null the declaration of public domain and remove it from the page because it risks misleading reusers and causing misunderstandings. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:46, 16 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi, Unfortunately, the description page on Commons doesn't help much. This photograph from circa 1920 is unlikely to be the own work of the uploader as claimed on the description page. The uploader's claim to own the copyright may or may not be correct. You can try to contact the uploader on his/her talk page on en.wikipedia, where the last contribution of the user is from 2016, and ask him/her about the source of the photograph and the copyright. XML Error uploading an image

I saw an outdated map from my country, so I tried to update it using the original SVG file from wikimedia and the Inkscape, so I could upload and update the pages were it was used. But when I tried to upload it here, an error message, in portuguese "O XML no arquivo enviado não pôde ser analisado", something like "The XML in the archive could not be analized". Using wgUseInstantCommons in non-Wikimedia-wiki broken

Since some minutes ago using images from Commons is broken in my wiki InkluPedia.de , e.g. https://inklupedia.de/wiki/Kopenhagen . I am sure it works 40 minutes ago, but now it fails without any changes in configuration. wgUseInstantCommons is set to true. Any technical problems in Commons? Any MediaWiki software update? Highlighting a river on an old map; NASCAR diecast models

Hello, two questions. First, would it be acceptable to reupload an edited version of an 1867 Beers Map in the public domain (File:1867 Beers Map of Yonkers ( Bronx, Riverdale ), New York - Geographicus - Yonkers-beers-1867.jpg) with a river on the map highlighted in a separate color in order to convey its course? I'm also concerned how, if acceptable, I would credit the source and work sections.

The second question concerns uploading pictures of NASCAR diecasts, which are models of NASCAR cars (race cars) but also can be considered toys. Would that be acceptable, or would it fall under "toys are copyrighted"?

Uploads are extremely slow

I used to use Vicuna Uploader to upload a group of files, but in the last few days it has given up the ghost. Uploading a single photo with Upload Wizard or Commons Uploader takes around 4 minutes for a cropped file and about 7 minutes for an uncropped file. Is there something wrong?   • Commons does not allow images on a fair use basis, ever (nor does Commons have articles) so with respect to Commons the answer is a definite no.
  • You indicate an article on the English-language Wikipedia (en-wiki), but your link goes nowhere. I'm guessing you mean en:Austin Powers: Oh, Behave!. It looks like that article already has an illustration on a fair use basis (which is uploaded directly to en-wiki, and would not be acceptable on Commons), so it is unlikely that en-wiki's policies would allow another. Name of image

I recently uploaded the official portrait of Congresswoman Jenniffer González (provided by her office to the U.S. Congress) to Wikipedia Commons, but unfortunately I did not rename the file to something descriptive (such as "Official Portrait of Resident Commissioner Jenniffer Gonzalez.jpg") and the file thus has the name that my computer had assigned to it when I copied it from the U.S. Congress website ("G000582.jpg").   • It is copyrighted work, apparently published in the UK in 1967, so I can think of no basis on which it would be in the public domain. Wikipedia vs Wikimedia images

I notice that Wikimedia Commons images can generally be used by international Wikipedias. If an image is already in Wikipedia, is it a simple matter to upload it to Wikimedia? There are a number of methods for transferring images from Wikipedia to Commons; see en:Wikipedia:Moving files to Commons for some examples. However, the file you've given cannot be uploaded to Commons, since it's used on the English Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. Only freely licensed images are accepted on Commons. You could upload the file manually to other Wikipedias with a fair use claim as long as their policies allow it. clpo13(talk) 17:16, 21 February 2017 (UTC)

Thank you for your answer. You're right, some are there, but some aren't. For instance, I couldn't find the symbol for "lighthouse". As to the symbols for places in Category:City locators: they are there, but for use in the legend you would want the symbol for "village" (black dot) be smaller than the other ones. Apparently the purpose of the template file is to download it, open it in your graphical editor, and copy the needed symbols. Also, a legend in the fiel should be added. Yes, I originally created this template and their symbols as a standalone file, where the Wikicartographers would import it in their new map and pick up what they need, having everything they need in one place without having to search for several individual symbols through Commons. After some time, other contributors added additional symbols in the template. When I created it, I didn’t think of uploading each symbol as an individual file, but if you think it can be useful for the project, you’re welcome to do so. Upload new version of file from URL

I attempted to upload a file; File:Two medical technologists use a gamma counter to measure hormone concentrations in the blood.tif, however it seems to have failed half way through. It's a 15MB tiff and I'm not having any luck re-uploading the file through the normal route. I have uploaded the file elsewhere via ftp and am now trying to get it onto commons but my attempts through url2commons have been unsuccessful, I just get "ERROR: null". Is there a better way? I used the upload wizard to get (part of) the file uploaded initially, then tried to use Special:Upload to replace the file but (I'm assuming due to my internet connection) it just appears to time out after about 30 seconds of uploading. Beevil (talk) 21:31, 27 February 2017 (UTC)

Category names

I have created a in Category:Bar charts some sub categories to get bar charts a bit better organized, e.g. Category:Time series bar charts. When I named the subcategories I basically followed what I saw in other categories. However, as an uploader of a "time series bar chart", I might type in "bar chart" as a category, but that won't offer me "time series bar chart" as category name. So, I think instead of "Time series bar charts" a category name like "Bar charts for time series" or "Bar charts for comparisons over time" would be better. Would be "Barcharts, stacked" suitable? Is there any policy about this in Commons?

Looking for Recommendations on Software to make Graphs, Animations, etc.

So, I'm very out-of-date when it comes to software for making graphics, and I'm in need of some recommendations.

Here are some examples of what I already know exists, but I haven't really used much:

  • I made that light dispersion animation. What I used for that (and my other works) was a custom drawing library that allows me to draw lines and shapes with code. That's what you're looking for. At some point, if you really want full flexibility and artistic freedom, you will have to move towards that kind of approach, as typical drawing and plotting software are extremely limited. With that in mind, I recommend you look into Processing as a starting point, as it's very accessible, free and can do many things out of the box.   • I have no idea what help you are asking for, but assuming this is about File:Screenshot-18.png, there appear to be some copyrighted icons pretty prominently on menu bars. They don't seem to me to be relevant to what the image is about. As it stands, it should probably be deleted as a copyvio, but it could be cropped to be OK (assuming the image of the Moon is public domain). I tried, but it turned out to be far beyond my capabilities, to determine whether a logotype like this belongs on Commons or if it's considered too risky, with respect to perceived copyright infringements in foreign countries.

The intended usage is like this: wikipedia:en:Natur & Kultur.

I would be happy if someone else takes a look and, if needed, deletes the file.

If it’s been around since 1922 it’ll be PD in the USA. However, if it was first published after 1925 it will be still be copyrighted in the USA under URAA; if after 1947, in Sweden as well. Adding recoloured photo to existing photo page

I have recoloured an existing photo of Elvis Presley. The original page from which it was extracted is here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Elvis_Presley_Publicity_Photo_for_The_Trouble_with_Girls_1968.jpg

Could you please advise how I can add a recoloured version of this photo to its page as noted above - I selected "Upload a new version of this file" as I just wanted to upload a new version, but I did not want to replace the existing photo. There was no edit option under File History so that I could add it there.

I've spent some time going through the Help Desk archives but couldn't locate a similar question in the half hour or so I spent looking for an answer.

I have now uploaded the recoloured image: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Elvis_Presley_in_colour_in_1970.jpg, and would appreciate it if someone could advise how to do this, particularly since I occasionally recolour old black and white photos.

Hi Tzali. Looks to me like the way to do it is by using Template:Other in the "other versions" field of the file description. Take a look at how, for example, File:George-W-Bush.jpeg does it. Howicus (Look at what I found!) (talk) 03:22, 19 February 2017 (UTC)

I don't know where to find the "Other versions" field to which you're referring.

As I mentioned, there is no edit option under 'File History' so that I could add it there. It doesn't open up the section I need if I choose the 'Edit' or 'History' tabs at the top. Thank you for the link, BUT this just takes me to the summary section. There is nothing in the summary section about where to add the new image in "File History."

As I said previously, there is NO EDIT option that I can see. You advised "Go to File:Elvis Presley Publicity Photo for The Trouble with Girls 1968.jpg and click "edit"" - to WHICH edit are you referring? Where is it that I choose edit to ADD this new recoloured image? The ONLY edits available are under 'summary' and 'licensing,' NEITHER of which allows me to add the recoloured image in the 'File History' section.

  • I'm sorry, I didn't look into this closely enough, on two counts. I was thrown by the fact that part of the process of uploading a variant of a photo is to edit the "other versions" section of the information template. You don't edit the file history, and I didn't note that misdirection. You do the upload just like any other upload (which you've done), but you link them by using the {{Derived from}} template in the "other versions" section of {{Information}} for the new photo and adding {{Derivative versions}} similarly to the old one. Let me do it for you, and you can see how it is done to do it yourself next time. - Jmabel ! talk 17:26, 24 February 2017 (UTC)

The fact that something is available free of charge does not mean that it is free in the sense that Commons requires, namely that anyone is free to use, modify and redistribute it. Unfortunately, http://www.thefreemasterkey.com/books/The-Master-Key-System-Charles-F-Haanel.pdf has an "All rights reserved" copyright notice on page two, which goes on to state that "No part of this book may be reproduced in any form or by any electronic or mechanical means including information storage and retrieval systems, without permission in writing..." The text itself was first published in the United States before 1923, so it is in the public domain, but the publishers of this particular version may rightfully hold and reserve the rights to the front cover and other recent aspects. I would like to add my organisation's current logo to the Wikpedia page about our organisation; however, it seems that this is done through Wikipedia Commons, yet Wikipedia Commons says that logos are NOT allowed to be uploaded. https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/daily-image-l/2017-February/003062.html appears to be correctly encoded, so this is most likely a problem with whatever e-mail client you use or its configuration, not the e-mail itself, and your operating system's language shouldn't matter either. —LX (talk, contribs) 23:26, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

uploading a photo

wizard in wikimedia will not upload a JPEG photo file...I then want to add this photo to and article on Wikipedia which is in my sandox

  • The problem certainly isn't that its a JPEG (our most common format), and I see that you successfully uploaded File:Col Jacob Griffin portrait.jpg. Is there still a problem? Can you give more detail of what went wrong?

Copyright help regarding File:Intersections.jpg

I have received permission, in email, from someone at the National World War I Museum and Memorial to use their new logo on Wikipedia, but I'm not sure what to ask for as far as legal permission, and I can't find the image by itself anywhere to tell me its information. I've already uploaded the image to WC, but not to any specific article on Wikipedia.

  • "Permission to use on Wikipedia" is not sufficient for Commons. See Commons:Project scope#Required licensing terms. In the unlikely event that they are willing to grant that broad a license, instructions for how to provide that are at COM:OTRS. But more likely, assuming you want to use this on the English-language Wikipedia, you will want to upload this just there as non-free use. Probably you will want to use en:Template:Non-free logo in lieu of a license tag; this is not allowed on Commons.
  • By the way, when you do upload on the English-language Wikipedia, you might want to use a more specific name to indicate what the file is, e.g. "File:National World War I Museum and Memorial logo.jpg" rather than "Intersections.jpg" - Jmabel ! talk 01:34, 28 February 2017 (UTC)

To avoid similarity with the postage, such reproduction must be distinctively in smaller or larger sizes than the actual stamp and must be without perforation on the edges. Further, across bar will also be placed on one- corner of the stamp, obliterating the denomination. It must be noted that reproduction of the stamp in colour of the actual size of the stamp with perforation of the edges may be deemed to be taken as production of the actual stamp. Detailed guidelines are available on Guidelines for Use of Images of Postage Stamps."
