Using an image from the National Portrait Gallery website

I am currently writing an article for the English Wikipedia about a British Army officer, Andrew Hay and would very much like to add an image. I have located one on the National Portrait Gallery (London) website here [[1]]. A low resolution version of the image is available to download under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported licence (whatever that is). Is this licence sufficient for the purpose? And if so can I have some help uploading as I have no idea what a zip file is or how I can link the image in a way that is acceptable to the NPG.--Ykraps (talk) 17:43, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

It is more than 70 years after the death of the artist, and indeed the artist that the artist may have been "inspired" by. The original artwork is therefore public domain and any faithful copy of it must also be public domain. You are free to reuse any resolution of the image for any purpose, including uploading copies to Commons on a {{PD-100}} licence. -- (talk) 18:04, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
JFTR the conditions in that CC-BY-NC-ND licence are not acceptable here. But if the original is indeed PD, the publishers have no basis for placing any restrictions on it; they can only copyright their own contributions, whether to derivative works made from it or by way of presentation, framing or commentary.
As for the Zip archive, you will need to expand it, or extract the image from it, for uploading in one of the supported formats (probably JPEG).—Odysseus1479 (talk) 19:17, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
I don't profess to know anything about copyright but it occurs to me that although the painting is 100 plus years old, the image is not, and what is copyrighted here is the digital representation of the painting.--Ykraps (talk) 21:01, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
As Fæ implied above, a faithful reproduction, requiring no special creativity to execute, accrues no additional intellectual-property rights beyond those inherent to the original. The organization providing it may well deserve acknowledgement for their photographic & curatorial work, but from a legalistic POV is in no position to demand such recognition or to place restrictions on others’ usage of the content.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:39, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
"...in the U.S., and therefore, according to a vote on Commons (which of course has no bearing on the real world), in every other jurisdiction" I think is the part you forgot to mention. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag and Commons:Reuse of PD-Art photographs#United Kingdom / UK. It should also be mentioned that the NPG has taken legal action against individual Wikimedia participants in the past. LX (talk, contribs) 07:56, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

uploading a national weather service map of storm track

Dear Wikimedia: I have a jpeg of the storm track of a Extreme Damaging Wind Event that occurred on July 1, 2011. It was sent to me this morning by National Weather Service in Chanhassen Minnesota. Please advise on how I can upload this map as a reference to the storm event mentioned in the Wikipedia Oak Wilt page, under "importance".

  • Presumably the relevant license is {{PD-NWS}}. Other than that you upload like any other image. If you are using one of the upload "wizards" or something like that that does not offer that particular license, just pick a public domain license & edit after uploading to clarify the license. (If your question was broader, like "how do I upload images" there are a lot of ways to do that. You'd probably do best to start at Special:UploadWizard. As for putting an image in an article, just look at the wiki markup for how someone has put any image in any article. It will typically be something like [[File:NAME OF FILE.jpg|thumb|CAPTION]].
  • If that doesn't answer your question, please spell out what piece you are missing. - Jmabel ! talk 08:03, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

Trying to attach a photo to a wiki page...

I am trying to attach a photo to a wikipedia.org page. i have explicit permission from the photographer to use the photo on the wikipedia page however I am not doing something right. I can't get the photo to stay on the page. Any help would be incredibly appreciated!!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kaydencecreative (talk • contribs)

  • You say "i have explicit permission from the photographer to use the photo on the wikipedia page": that doesn't matter for much for Commons. Commons is only a repository of content that is free-licensed (at least as far as copyright it can be reused by anyone, for any purpose, although possibly subject to personality rights, trademarks, etc.). "You can use this on Wikipedia" is not a free license. Further, if you are uploading someone else's work for which they have granted a license, but there is no public posting of that license, we will need an OTRS ticket, (see COM:OTRS).
  • Also, I'm not sure whether you are saying there is a technical issue or someone keeps reverting you. If the latter, and the reversion is on the Wikipedia for some language, then Commons is not the place to take that up: we are not responsible for individual Wikipedia's decisions about article content. If the former, then if you could indicate what image and what article you are talking about, someone here can probably help you. - Jmabel ! talk 07:55, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi, For how to rename a file, please see Commons:File renaming.
It's the first time I notice that blocking file names on en.wp has the side-effect of blocking the display of Commons files. It looks like something that can cause problems. Has it always been or is it something new? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Asclepias (talk • contribs) 22:04, 1 June 2014‎ (UTC)
Dunno. This is my first experience with it. Thanks for the advice. Pkeets (talk) 03:52, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
What's happened is that there is a locally uploaded file with the same name. Whenever that's the case, the local file takes precedence, and that's always been the case. (In this case, the local file is just a placeholder, but that doesn't really make any difference. LX (talk, contribs) 14:23, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

I'm worried by "This media file is uncategorized.. Please notify the uploader.."

I uploaded three of my own photographs of Scottish mountains yesterday but I didn't categorise them at the time. I was about to do that today when I saw this message: This media file is uncategorized. Please help improve this media file by adding it to one or more categories, so it may be associated with related media files (how?), and so that it can be more easily found. Please notify the uploader with and then a subst thing I can't even include here cos I don't know how to desensitise brace characters. (So that's my second question.) Anyway, I'm sure it's clear enough. My question is: did I do something wrong on the upload cos I don't even want to be notified if someone else categorises my images for me (let alone them need my permission). Quite the opposite. Go right ahead, pal. Save me a job. Make my day (etc) Munrogue (talk) 14:06, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

Depending on the situation, templates can be inserted manually by a user, or semi-automatically by bots, or automatically upon upload. A common difficulty with the wording of some templates is when one part of the text of the template addresses one user (or group of users) and another part of the text of the template addresses another user (or group of users). This template, "Uncategorized", is an example. The text above the separating line ("This media file is uncategorized. Please help improve...") addresses every user who can help, while the text under the separating line ("Please notify the uploader...") addresses the user who inserted this template in a file description page. Thus, the message "Please notify the uploader..." means "If you are the user who inserted this template in a file description page, then please also notify the uploader that he has omitted to categorize that file". It does not mean "Notify the uploader every time you categorize this file". In the case of your three files, the template was inserted automatically upon upload, so the second part of the template addresses nobody. Templates with different parts that address different people can potentially cause some confusion for new users who read such templates for the first time. It is a real problem when that is done in license templates. However, it is not really a problem in a warning template such as the template "Uncategorized", because the matter is clarified if the new user reads the other template to which the last part of the text refers, in this case the template "Please link images". -- Asclepias (talk) 17:40, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

Danke

Lupo 11:57, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

Incorrect commons upload

Recently I spotted an image that was uploaded from Wikipedia to the Commons (File:Cathedral Church of St Paul 05Feb2008.jpg), however, the original image it leads back to is incorrect. Without such information you cannot upload such an image. The precautionary principle of Commons means that such an image would most likely be deleted. Where do you want to use this picture if it were uploaded? Do you have any other information about the picture other than the copyright/permissions, like how old is it, where was it taken? BB-Card Copyrights

Hi. Could somebody please take a look into this matter that i posted on the talkpage: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File_talk:WillBeneSignedBaseBCard.JPG . Thanks. --Gary Dee (talk) 16:02, 6 June 2014 (UTC)

Moving your comment here, since the file was a copyvio & was deleted:

Hi. To who it may concern. This Picture of a Baseball Card (signed by Player ??), has been Found on Ebay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/1989-TOPPS-84-Bill-Bene-LA-DODGERS-SIGNED-AUTOGRAPH-AUTO-COA-/110902079687?pt=US_Autographs&hash=item19d24770c7). So, as i have not been Sure about which Copyright appys in this case, a Signed Card. I tried to look it up but found nothing directly that relys on this special situation (is a autographed Card losing its Copyrights opposed to a unsigned card). As this then in the ebay posting of that picture, i guess it should be Fair USE. In case it SHOULD NOT be, assume GF from my side, an if there are concerns about it, please delete. It would be nice if it should be so, to notify me. Thanks. --Gary Dee (talk) 15:58, 6 June 2014 (UTC)

The fact that the card was signed doesn't change the fact that the card itself is copyrighted; therefore, I've deleted it. - Jmabel ! talk 23:05, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for clearence. Another Question remains although. If it is copyvio, is it also a VIO(Copy) at posting it as it looks, at Ebay ?? --Gary Dee (talk) 00:23, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
I imagine that representations of items for resale are considered “fair use”. Speaking of which, the English Wikipedia accepts low-resolution images that are used to illustrate specific articles, where no adequate free substitute is obtainable. So there‘s a chance you could get a reduced version hosted there, if you prepare a convincing fair use rationale. Have a good read through the policy there first, to be sure you ‘cover all the bases’ when filling out the template. Commons though, like many other WMF projects, does not allow non-free content under such terms, because everything here should be reusable anywhere, for any legal purpose.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:04, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
I have struck part of the above on further reading … Sorry, it appears baseball cards are only acceptable on enWP if the card itself is notable enough to be discussed in an article.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:15, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
  • I agree with Odysseus1479 that the use on eBay is probably fair use. Heck, use in an article about him would probably be fair use (though, as Odysseus further explains, against en-wiki policy), but Commons doesn't accept images on a fair-use basis. Commons is specifically a repository of images that are either public domain or free-licensed. - Jmabel ! talk 06:12, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

Kishorimohan Bandyopadhyay

Can it be called violation of copyright when the person photographed as well as the photographer are more than 80 years dead ? Kishorimohan Bandyopadhyay and his wife Khetroprosadi's photos have been removed for copyright violation. The photographer was the same, Lakshminarayan Roychoudhury, my grandfather, who died in 1933. -- Shankar SenShankar Sen (talk) 04:12, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

  • I'm guessing this is about File:Kishori Mohan Bandyopadhyay.jpg, though if it is about another file please clarify. You uploaded this file with the date given as 2014-01-20 12:59:31, claimed it as your own work and said you were the author. If in fact it is a photo over 80 years old, it is no wonder that it got deleted, given the completely inaccurate information about its provenance. If you want to get it undeleted, you can start an undeletion request at Commons:Undeletion requests. Your request should include accurate information about the date, authorship, and source of the photo. - Jmabel ! talk 06:23, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

What is the problem? Ruslik (talk) 11:54, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Anyone clear on whether File:Luis Berenguer Fuster.jpg is OK or not? The source is vague (an organization rather than a web site), there is no indication of how the uploader knows the author's identity, and no indication of why this would be under CC-BY-SA. I suspect a copyvio, but since the specified source is a Spanish government commission, it wouldn't surprise me if the image is public domain. - Jmabel ! talk 18:04, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

Uploader hasn't done anything on any WMF site in over a year, so I don't have an obvious way to follow this up. - Jmabel ! talk 18:07, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
It looks like a copyvio, but maybe a misguided upload by someone who had access to these images. It is possible but unlikely that the uploader is the photographr. The image appears on pages 14 and 16 of the 2007-09 annual report of the CNC (download only from the link on this page). Although they are both lower resolution copies than the Commons image, I think the report was almost certainly published long before the hi-res image was uploadeed here. The organization website does claim copyright at the legal noticias page and the fifth paragraph states that all the website contents including images and photographs are property of the CNC or their contractors and that such content cannot be modified, copied, reproduced without their express permission. Unfortunately it should be deleted per COM:PRP unless someone has the time to contact the CNC, find out who took the photo and obtain permission from the author. ES:WP does not accept fair-use material so that avenue is closed to us. Green Giant (talk) 20:56, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

The API is documented here. Depending on what language you’re using, you may be able to find pre-built routines or bots to do what you want; I don‘t think read-only functions (that don‘t unreasonably burden the servers) need any special permissions. Any media you find here will be royalty-free; if you want only public-domain images, there are categories for those. (BTW it‘s not advisable to post e-mail URLs on public noticeboards, where they may be harvested by spambots. I’ve messed yours up a bit, but you may want to delete it.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:33, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

I don’t think it’s necessary to tag them all (or even desirable, as it would trigger a flood of nominations, over a single issue that’s best settled in one place); adding the above link to the existing nomination ought to be enough to identify the affected files.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 02:33, 10 June 2014 (UTC)
Thanks Odysseus! I have already added the link in DR. But thought it would be best to tag all images so their respective uploaders are notified. §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {T/C} 04:09, 10 June 2014 (UTC)
Good point. That might mean some users get their Talk pages bombed with numerous templates, but if there’s a way of getting a list of uploaders of the files on a search page, so each could be sent only a single notification, I‘m not aware of it. Have you been able to determine whether these files were uploaded sporadically by numerous users, or in batches by just a few?—Odysseus1479 (talk) 05:08, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

Biografia

Gracias

(Biography text removed) / Biografía personal borrado'

Sorry, this website (Commons) is not for hosting biographies. We do host photos; I have put the one you uploaded in the category of Flamenco guitarists. It might be possible to get your biography on the English Wikipedia, but there are numerous policies regarding verifiability and conflict-of-interest that make it very difficult to get a self-written piece accepted. At the very least, it must be referenced to independent, reliable publications and neutral in tone. If you are more comfortable in Spanish, it might be better to start at the Spanish Wikipedia, to ask editors there for help in writing something that meets their standards.

Reusing imges from Commons on my website

Hello, I'm planning to use images from Wikimedia Commons on my website and I don't prefer hotlinking. Will it be correct to upload downscaled copy of an image (I don't want full resolution) on my website and then to write under the image something like this?

Source: <link to the source image>Wikimedia Commons</link>, author: XXX, license:<link to license>CC-BY-SA (or CC-BY or whatever)</link>

Also, is it possible to have an image licensed under CC-BY-SA on the page while the other content on that page won't be distributed under CC-BY-SA, but will have all rights reserved?

Thank you. --Ten Karl (talk) 15:43, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

  • Generally yes to all; the only qualification I see is that some images may have more specific attribution requirements, which will be spelled out on their file page, and which you should follow as appropriate. - Jmabel ! talk 17:35, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

What's the difference, if any, between using PD-self and CC-0?

The best I can tell, they are exactly the same license terms. Are they exactly the same or is there some nuance?--Brainy J (talk) 21:47, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

  • Pretty interchangeable, although PD-self is useful only if you are uploading your own work, not work someone else already released as CC-0. We set up PD-self before CC-0 existed. I'd lean toward CC-0, since it is more broadly used (not just on Wikimedia Commons) and hence more likely to be widely understood. - Jmabel ! talk 22:59, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

Correcting source information on existing file

The source field of the information template in File:John Parry, harpist.jpeg appears to be wrong. As I explain in File_talk:John Parry, harpist.jpeg, the link points to the a different picture in a different art gallery. The picture was acquired by its present gallery several years before the file was posted to Commons, so it seems likely that the file was not obtained from the declared source. Should I change the link to where the image could be downloaded from now, even though I cannot be certain that the file was originally downloaded from there? Is an accurate record of the source needed for licensing? Verbcatcher (talk) 00:45, 14 June 2014 (UTC)

  • I think it is good to add a source even if the original uploader might have been mistaken, especially if it is the website of a gallery that currently hosts the original work. Just for completeness. :) Green Giant (talk) 20:41, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
  • Definitely good, but only if the source provided really corresponds to the image we have, not just some other photo of the same underlying work. - Jmabel ! talk 00:46, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

about picture source

hi, sorry for my bad English, i have two questions:

  1. can i upload an old picture from this site as source, with {{PD-Syria}} license. (note: the picture is for selling on this site, and it's allowable on another Forums sites but there is watermarks on it on this forums.
  2. this site Provides old pictures (and this site is not the real producer) but with BY-NC-ND license, can i upload them here with {{PD-Syria}} to use them with Wikipedia articles?

thanks alot--Syrian Eng (talk) 11:19, 16 June 2014 (UTC)

Hello,
At question 1: It depends when and where the photograph was first published, who is the author, when did he die, etc. The postcard reproduced in your link was published by Soubhi, based in Damas. Soubhi did not write the name of photographers on the postcards. This postcard was first published around the middle of the 1920s? It should be good for Commons, with the template PD-Syria and the template PD-1996 (with the parameter |Syria) (do not mind the 1996 title of the template, the parameter Syria will make it display 2004). Write in the description page that the author is anonymous. If possible cite a source that gives a publication date.
At question 2: It depends on the same conditions as usual, when and where the photograph was first published, who is the author, when did he die, etc. You must do the research for each photograph. If you arrive a the conclusion that the original photograph is in the public domain in the United States and in the source country, you can upload the reproduction to Commons with the relevant PD tags. It might be prudent to add a note that the source website claims a copyright with CC-by-nc-nd, even if that doesn't make a difference for Commons. You could also use the template PD-Scan. If you arrive at the conclusion that the original photograph is not in the public domain, it should not be uploaded to Commons.
-- Asclepias (talk) 12:14, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
thaks alot Asclepias, I have upload the picture in question 1 , but kindly how did you know the info's about the picture (published by Soubhi & This postcard was first published around the middle of the 1920s) i didn't find this info's on the internet, thanks again-- Syrian Eng (talk) 10:40, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
On the same website where you linked your file, delcampe.net, you can find several other reproductions of the same postcard. Some entries have the information about the publisher and the reproduction of the back of the postcard, and some entries have the information about the date when the postcards were mailed, showing that they were mailed around the middle of the 1920s. Delcampe.net is a practical website for that, because it often has many different reproductions of a postcard and informations. You can do a search on the internet to complete with the informations from other websites. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:02, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
thanks alot Asclepias --Syrian Eng (talk) 15:47, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

Portion used The entire logo is used to convey the meaning intended and avoid tarnishing or misrepresenting the intended image.

Low resolution? The logo is of a size and resolution sufficient to maintain the quality intended by the company or organization, without being unnecessarily high resolution.

Purpose of use The image is placed in the infobox at the top of the article discussing Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation, a subject of public interest. The significance of the logo is to help the reader identify the organization, assure the readers that they have reached the right article containing critical commentary about the organization, and illustrate the organization's intended branding message in a way that words alone could not convey.

Replaceable? Because it is a non-free logo, there is almost certainly no free representation. Any substitute that is not a derivative work would fail to convey the meaning intended, would tarnish or misrepresent its image, or would fail its purpose of identification or commentary. Other information Use of the logo in the article complies with Wikipedia non-free content policy, logo guidelines, and fair use under United States copyright law as described above. --Vin09 (talk) 10:04, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

Vin09, this image does not belong on Commons because it is an unfree logo. Brand New Here

I just uploaded my first .jpg, but I can't find it when I enter the title of the picture into the search engine. Won't anyone else be able to find my picture?

Hi. Your picture is here:File:Sandhill Cranes in Florida.jpg. Eitan96 (talk) 12:49, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

Sorry, I still don't understand

I'm glad that you were able to locate my photo, and I can find it too, within my own account. BUT I enter the site and type into the search box, and my photo does not appear...the point is no one who is searching for a sandhill crane pic will ever come to my contribution. I tried clicking on "latest files" to see what was uploaded today, and my photo is not there either. My question is... how do I make my photo available to OTHER people? How do I tag it to make it searchable? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.189.192.102 (talk • contribs) 15:52, 17 June 2014 (UTC+2)

My best guess would be that the search index needs some time to update. Maybe try again in a week? Regards, --ChrisiPK (Talk|Contribs) 13:59, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

Ok, thanks for responding :)

The file as uploaded had not had a category attached. I have added "Grus Canadensis" as a category which should make it easier to find SovalValtos (talk) 14:29, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

I surely appreciate that ... I went ahead and added the name of my photo as a category "Sandhill cranes in Florida" ... but I still can't find it by using the search box. Is there anywhere else I can specify search tags?

New MARK or LOGO for our university needed

I am having difficulty with the ability to upload an image to our Indiana University South Bend Wikipedia page. I registered over a week ago, as I have been asked to be the official editor for our regional campus of Indiana University. My address had been confirmed at that time. When I try to upload an image (of our new university mark to replace the outdated one) it says I am not yet confirmed. How long does it take? I really need to get this changed out.

Also, I reviewed HISTORY and found that someone had replaced the location of the campus to DARIAN'S BASEMENT from SOUTH BEND, INDIANA which is where it should be. Is it possible to block people- i.e. this one, from making changes?

Please advise. thanks, Teresa Sheppard

Hi, You registered on the English-language Wikipedia on June 6 (your log over there) but you logged in to Wikimedia Commons (here) for the first time today June 17 (your log here). It takes four days after the first log in to be confirmed here, a waiting period that may discourage some potential basic vandals. For an overview of user statuses, please see the pages Commons:User access levels and Commons:Autoconfirmed users. When talking about a file, it helps if you tell the filename. Can't guess which file's history you talk about. Accounts or IPs get blocked if they cause problems but usually not for an isolated vandalism, especially if it's from an IP used by different people. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:19, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

Viewing pictures only with a given licence

Hello, is it possible to selectively view a category only with a given licence (public domain)? Episeda (talk) 18:50, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

You can get a list of files with CatScan, either directly or using a Gadget menu, by intersecting the category of interest with the appropriate licence category, e.g. Category:Public domain or one of its sub-cats. I don‘t know of a way to browse them directly as in a gallery.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 02:36, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

How can I upload my own head shot

Hi, I am creating my user profile, and I wish to upload my own head shot. How can I do this? - — Preceding unsigned comment added by Paul Wallin (talk • contribs)

  • Did you take the photo yourself (timer or selfie or such)? If not, the copyright would typically belong to the photographer, so you'd need to go through the process described at COM:OTRS to get the rights holder to sign over the rights.
  • Other than that: pretty much the same way as any other image. Don't forget to add the template {{User page image}} to the file's description page, so that it's clear why it's here & it doesn't get deleted as being out of scope.
  • If something else is unclear, please ask more specifically what's confusing you. - Jmabel ! talk 06:05, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

Guten Tag

Arvigrat

  • The owner of the image -- not you -- needs to select the license (though of course you can recommend). And, no, Commons cannot accept images from modern-day catalogs without such permission. I'd recommend CC-BY-SA as a license, and that they should be specific as to how they want the images attributed; if they can't agree to CC-BY-SA, then they probably can't give a free enough license for Commons' purposes.
  • I suggest you read COM:OTRS/de for how that third party can email Commons the necessary permission. - Jmabel ! talk 22:46, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

Categorization problem

Moved to Categories for discussion

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

There are two categories with different meanings: Category:Snuffers and Category:Snuffers in art. It's more likely they will become disambiguation categories pointing to Category:Candle snuffers and Category:Snuffers (person) (or other more suitable names). But the problem doesn't end there, candle snuffers category is connected to Category:Candle lighting but categorized as an object to extinguish; snuffers in art is connected to Category:People by activity and Category:Snuff but not connected to any verb. Which verb would be appropriate and which category name to describe that action? Do verb gerunds snuffing or sniffing exist? In wikipedia, snuff is categorized as smoking. My doubt about that is it is smoking tobacco by inhalation, so I wonder if smoking is the appropriate action/activity to use as parent category. How to handle this problem? --Humatiel (talk) 00:11, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

Upload problems

I'm having problems when I upload more than two or three files. Everything goes nicely during the upload but the process fails just after the 'Describe' phase. Many times the process never ends and some of the files are never published. When trying to stop and re-start the whole thing goes to the nvery beggining. Thanks -- Alvesgaspar (talk) 17:43, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

I am no expert, just a uploader with less than one year's experience. I hope these comments may be of use. I would not know the name of the particular upload tool I use. It is 'Upload Wizard' accessed from the left hand column, Participate > Upload File. I have had similar problems to you when trying to upload several image files at once. Particularly if they are not small. It can appear the time remaining to upload displayed is actually increasing during the upload. I put the problems down partly to the speed of my internet connection and secondly to the wizard liking to do things quickly, without pauses in the process. I once made the mistake of leaving the computer whilst files were being uploaded to find on my return some such message as tab? or token? expired'. I have even had file names swapped between files during upload. Just complete one image upload at a time. SovalValtos (talk) 12:31, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
Being asked questions such as,. This time which upload tool are you using, is off putting to a newbie, who is only aware of the upload one has tried. This time Alvesgaspar knew what he was about. I would not have done. There are real horrors in the upload process for us newbies, particularly the lack of logic.SovalValtos (talk) 15:37, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
I asked because if it was Special:Upload I could help. I've also used the Commonist (an external application) though not lately. I have assiduously avoided the "Wizard", which seems to be an error-prone mess, and I have no idea why the default seems to be to aim newbies at an error-prone mess. - Jmabel ! talk 00:21, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
Is there any chance that a suitably technical person could be asked to look at the Upload Wizard? A few weeks ago I asked about problems with the Location input boxes which seem very picky as to what they allow.SovalValtos (talk) 10:09, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
As the three people who have contributed to this section have had problems with the Wizard, the appeal for a technical person to help is not frivolous. Even if we are just told to be more patient or only use it for one image a session, it would be helpful. I do not know how to contact a tech person direct, hence the request here for someone to connect the question to the right place.SovalValtos (talk) 09:05, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

The Wikimedia Foundation has a system called 'Bugzilla' where technical problems can be raised. Searching for uploadwizard, there are a lot of known issues with the uploading tool. Does this sound similar to what's happened here? Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 14:46, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

I can only reply for myself, the third of the contributors to this. Thank you Richard Nevell (WMUK) for your input which moves things on. Whilst the bugzilla stuff may sound similar to my experience, that probably is not particularly useful to the techies. Similarity is rather vague, and not the same as confidence in the same type of event being repeated. What would be required is my detailed note taking whilst doing an upload that fails. Having experienced the frustration involved, including 1/2 hour waits, that is not something I would want to do unless absolutely necessary. Rather beyond my loyalty to Wiki. I do not have sufficient familiarity of computers either to understand much of what has been said on bugzilla. Given the shortage of Techies and their time, maybe it might be an interim solution to draw in the horns of ambition and restrict the Upload Wizard to one image at a time? Uploading post-1969 Australian coins

Hi. If i get approval from the Australian Mint to upload post-1969 Australian coins can i then upload them to Wikimedia Commons? I ask this because this template

Public domain
Public domain
This image depicts a unit of currency issued by Australia which was designed before 1 May 1969, and is in the public domain.

This license tag is only for coins designed before 1 May 1969. The designs of coins made after 1 May 1969 are copyrighted by the Royal Australian Mint (information) who reserves all rights to reproduction. Images of currency whose designs are dated after 1 May 1969, including the $1, $2, and any commemorative edition coins, are not permitted to be uploaded to Commons. See COM:CRT/Australia#Currency for more information.

Currency This file, either completely or in part, depicts a unit of currency. Its use may be subject to criminal counterfeiting law or other legal provisions outside of copyright law. Before you use this file, you have to ensure that such use is fully compliant with such laws. See our general disclaimer.

confuses me slightly. It says unreservedly that post-1969 currency "will be deleted as a copyvio." Does this rule still apply even after the Australian Mint's approval? Thanks for any assistance.MoTorleeb (talk) 06:47, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

Have you already obtained that permission? If so, what materials did the permission cover, and what rights did it grant? It seems unlikely that the Mint would grant a permission that is sufficient for Commons given the statement at http://www.ramint.gov.au/designs/ram-designs/using.cfm ("The Mint will not ordinarily grant approval for the reproduction of coin designs on articles which will be commercially produced and offered for sale [for example, articles such as T-shirts or coffee mugs].") LX (talk, contribs) 18:13, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
No i have not already obtained permission. I am just asking to know where i stand on the issue that confuses me. Let's say, hypothetically, they did give me permission to only upload the photos to Commons; would Commons then accept my uploads without removing them? Thanks for your assistance.MoTorleeb (talk) 02:41, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
No, a permission that only mentions uploading to Commons is not sufficient. Wikimedia Commons is a repository of free media. This means that content hosted here must be free for anyone to use for any purpose, including commercial purposes. An example of a purpose which must be allowed is to use images on T-shirts or coffee mugs and sell them. Since that's explicitly mentioned as something the Mint won't allow, again: it seems unlikely that the Mint would grant a permission that is sufficient for Commons. If you'd like to try anyway, use the process described at Commons:OTRS including the standard consent declaration template. LX (talk, contribs) 09:11, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
OK. But, finally, let's say the Mint even allowed the images use on mugs or T-shirts; don't they still have the right to request that they be attributed on that mug or T-shirt somewhere within visible range of the image? So in effect it's not a completely free license where the copyright-holder has zero rights. Thanks for your patience and assistance.MoTorleeb (talk) 00:27, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
“Free” for Commons purposes doesn‘t necessarily mean “no strings attached“. Requiring attribution is one condition we do allow, because this doesn’t inherently impede reuse or adaptation. (The most radical free-content advocates might disagree.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 08:12, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
OK. Thanks Odysseus. Also, a big thanks to LX.MoTorleeb (talk) 00:02, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

I'm guessing this is about File:Roger Lynn Jones.jpg. I'm not sure what your question is, but that is not sufficient to host the photo on Commons. Wikimedia Commons (this site) is a repository of media files that are free for anyone to use, modify and distribute for any purpose, including commercial purposes. On the file description page, you've mentioned the Creative Commons Attribution license, which is a license that grants those rights, but there is no mention of that license in what you've quoted above. That permission only mentions use on Wikipedia, but we cannot host content with permissions restricted to Wikipedia. Please follow the procedure described here instead.

--rimshottalk 06:29, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

I keep getting "Transfer failed [1] :" when trying to transfer files using http://tools.wmflabs.org/flickr2commons/index.html. It only happens with some images, not others.--Brainy J (talk) 01:57, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

:en:File:Ghostwriter (logo).jpg

Hi, I would like to suggest this file (en:File:Ghostwriter (logo).jpg) into Wiki Common. However, I do not know which template. Please help.--NeoBatfreak (talk) 18:18, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

This logo is unsuitable for the Commons as it is not a free image. Ruslik (talk) 18:51, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

List of graphics to be vectorized

Hi

I have just registered at Wikipedia because I have heard that there is a list of graphics that need to be vectorized and I want to help there. Unfortunately, I can not find this list.

Can someone tell me where I can find it?

Thanks in advance

the-madcat

Welcome, and see Category:Images that should use vector graphics. The recommended format is SVG. Have fun! (Please sign your posts on noticeboards & discussion pages with four tildes, ~~~~.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 07:37, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

Inquiry regarding previous contributions

Hi guys,

I hope you can help me a bit. Two years ago, I contributed to Wiki Loves Monuments 2012, submitting around 40 pictures.

Since then, my knowledge of photography improved quite a lot, I started being really involved and creating my own photography sites. It was great helping wikimedia at my own scale, I think it is a remarkable tool, yet my contribution has now a negative impact on the rest of my work and of my humble artistic aspirations. See, these pictures (that are finally of poor quality compared to my work now) are the first ones popping up when typing my name in a search engines. I'm afraid it does not reflect my work as it is now at all, and does not make me very credible as an aspiring photographer. I must say it is quite frustrating. I read the FAQs and rules about deleting pictures, and I feel a bit trapped after this experience.

The best would be to have these pictures deleted, even though I know it's not part of the rules. I just don't want to have to regret this decision for years. If not, it would be great to at least change the names of the files, since it has my full name on it. I'm actually the only guy with this name worldwide, so I can't hide behing anyone else :-)

Hoping you can help me fix this situation ! What should I do ? Again, thanks a lot for all the hard work

Hello, Simon Thollot. My first thought would require a little license-fudging, but since you're the copyright holder, there wouldn't be anything illegal. Perhaps you could ask someone else to re-upload them (without modifications) and have that person claim them as an own work, and then you could request deletion for the old filenames. This is a bit out of our normal procedure, but our normal procedures are meant to handle people who are trying to revoke licenses, get us to get rid of good images, etc.; I can't remember the last time I saw someone who was actively trying to avoid being attributed. I can't imagine that any jurisdiction would require attribution when the copyright holder doesn't want it, and I doubt that anyone here would complain. We'll just have to be careful to replace images manually in en:wp articles and other places they appear, using edit summaries such as "new image", because it would otherwise be easy to use page histories, because when something's deleted as a duplicate, a bot will often replace the image with an edit summary that explains the connection between the two files. Wikipedia link-tab gone?

Suddenly I have no link to Wikipedia on images. For example, my newly uploaded File:Guerrant Memorial Presbyterian Church.jpg has six tabs: file, [redlinked] discussion, edit, history, move & replace, unwatch. What happened to the "en" or "en-wiki" tab that would take me directly to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Guerrant_Memorial_Presbyterian_Church.jpg? If I remember rightly, viewing the site in other languages would change the tab's language; viewlang=de causes the tab to go to the German Wikipedia, for example. I can't remember changing any settings at all recently. Nyttend (talk) 12:11, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

What skin do you use? In vector everything is ok. Ruslik (talk) 19:06, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
Running Monobook; I've used it consistently since registering in 2006. Nyttend (talk) 00:53, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
Some gadgets that were on by default have been turned optional, see Commons:Village pump#New users …. This might be related to that. Check your preferences. MKFI (talk) 06:39, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

File:AmirYeganeh_Kish_Concert.jpg

At the bottom of the source page in Farsi (Persian) is written "و هر گونه کپی برداری از مطالب بدون ذکر منبع غیر مجاز و پیگرد قانونی دارد | 2011 - 2014" which represents this entry is that, if i not mentioning source page is illegal and if the source is mentioned so is legal!!!!!, so I've not committed a mistake and has introduced properly the source so I don't violate copyright.Famad ir (talk) 13:46, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

As I had told Famad ir earlier (User_talk:Túrelio#File:AmirYeganeh_Kish_Concert.jpg), I acknowledge there is a sort of permission. However, it should be verified whether this permission allows commercial re-use, which is required per COM:L. He said that he will contact the website-owner. --Túrelio (talk) 20:48, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

Picture I have of an entry

There is an entry about Military Monuments and there is one that currently does not have a picture ("Iron Mike" in Belleau Wood, France). I have been there and have a decent picture. Is it proper for me to add it? How do I do that?

Images of some other war memorials have been deleted to protect the sculptor or designer’s copyright: French law does not recognize “freedom of panorama“. Photos of sculptures and the like are considered derivative works of the original, and it appears that the creator of the relief at Belleau Wood died in 2003—so his work will remain under copyright for nearly sixty years yet. However, an overview of the site, in which the artwork is only a small detail, might be acceptable under the de minimis principle.
Note this is not Wikipedia, but Commons, and each site has its own policies. It may be possible to upload a smallish image of the monument to the English Wikipedia, under a “fair use rationale“. It would have to be used to illustrate specific commentary in an article, and be accompanied by a detailed justification (for which a template is provided on the page at that last link).—Odysseus1479 (talk) 03:24, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

Its my fault, somehow a stray bracket got into this file name. Flickr2commons will not allow me to load a new copy of the image under a name without the bracket because the image is already in Wikimedia (I suppose). Please could someone remove the bracket from the filename! Thanks! (red-faced) Eddaido (talk) 14:06, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

I have added a file 'File:JozefGlowinskiDyrygent.jpg' but couldn't attach it because some 'licence tag' was required. The file includes biography of Polish musician and orchestra conductor. What is that 'licence tag'?

A license tag (or more broadly: a copyright tag) is a template that explains why a file meets Commons' hosting criteria of being free for anyone to use, modify and distribute for any purpose, including commercial purposes. See Commons:Project scope/Summary#Must be freely licensed or public domain. LX (talk, contribs) 18:28, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

I have loaded an image (File:KTM of Andy Caldecott - Dakar 2005.jpg) which appears in Commons in landscape, even though it appeared in Portrait in my MS Explorer. How can I fix this please? GTHO (talk) 22:51, 27 June 2014 (UTC)

✓ Done, rotated 90° counter-clockwise. You can request a rotation by clicking on the link which says "Request rotation" just below the image on the description page. Green Giant (talk) 23:58, 27 June 2014 (UTC)
Which is provided by the RotateLink Gadget (check-box under “Interface: Files and categories”) on that Preferences page, in case you don’t see those links on file pages.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 05:21, 28 June 2014 (UTC)

Upload warning

I'm currently uploading files from Flickr through Flinfo, which eventually opens an upload browser that is not the normal upload wizard (but it works in conjunction with Flinfo and gets all the info from Flickr across), and I'm getting the following warning with this file: "This file contains HTML or script code that may be erroneously interpreted by a web browser." Some questions:

  1. What does this mean?
  2. What can I do about it?
  3. Why isn't the error message linked to a page that gives more context? Schwede66 23:41, 27 June 2014 (UTC)
I see that Flinfo has a talk page; have shifted the query to there. Thanks. Schwede66 03:31, 28 June 2014 (UTC)

Cannot upload a photo from a recent news article about a perosn, unsure about notability issues and resolution

Page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelly_Frances

Photo, public domain, credit Teo Kim http://res.heraldm.com/content/image/2014/06/26/20140626000813_0.jpg

Please specifiy April 2014 notes about citation requirements and how to resolve as many references have been since added

Thank you very much! Appologies English not native language. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ‎Jobfinder1135a (talk • contribs)

@Jobfinder1135a: Hi,
Where did you see that the image is in the public domain? On all probabilities, it is not. So you need a permission from the photographer.
PS: Your English is fine. ;) Yann (talk) 07:49, 28 June 2014 (UTC)
The photo can be seen on the Korea Herald article about Kelly Frances. Although it is credited to Teo Kim, there is nothing on the page that indicates the image is in the public domain. Please note that public domain is a copyright term not to be confused with something being publicly viewable. The Korea Herald website has a copyright page which basically says the image cannot be used without permission from the content owner, i.e. Teo Kim. So basically you cannot upload the image to Commons, and because the person in question is alive, you cannot upload a reduced image to English Wikipedia either. It might be worth emailing khnews@heraldcorp.com to see if they can put you in touch with the photographer. If the photographer agrees to license the photo under an acceptable license by contacting Wikimedia, then you could upload the photo here. Cheers. Green Giant (talk) 11:22, 29 June 2014 (UTC)
