Format of the first sentence[edit]
There has been some confusion about which word to bold face in the first sentence of the category description. Finland is a bilingual country with two official languages; Finnish and Swedish. Therefore the majority of the localities in Finland have both Finnish and Swedish names. It has become a standard in Finnish Wikipedia to first state the Finnish name and then state the Swedish name in parenthesis, see for example: Helsinki and vice versa in the Swedish Wikipedia. Now a minor ambiguity has arisen as this category has both Finnish and Swedish descriptions. The ambiguity is: which word to bold face in the Swedish category description? Is it
- Munkkiniemi (Munksnäs) or
- Munksnäs (Munkkiniemi)?
I prefer the first one since I understand that the word subject in the sentence "Most commonly, the article's subject is stated as early as possible in the first sentence, and placed in boldface" in Wikipedia's guideline as referring to the name of the category. The category name is in English.
If we now look at an article from the Finnish Wikipedia: Sonera Stadium, as an example, we can see that the article title is in bold face, not the Finnish language name Sonera-stadion (the old sponsor name,Finnair-stadion , is still use in the article).
On the other hand, using the Swedish name in bold face in the Swedish description would make more sense in a way, since the whole sentence is in Swedish.
For me it really does not matter which one of the formats we choose, 1. or 2., as long as we follow the uniform standard throughout every similar category (all subcategories in Category:Neighbourhoods of Helsinki and Category:Quarters of Helsinki).

- To me this is a question of language style in a full sentence. Full sentences are written in one language, with any extra definitions being secondary. This is simply because a full sentence is supposed to be read as a sentence, not as a list or a catalogue. For example Roma (Rome) is the capital of Italy just sounds strange. Rome (ital. Roma) is the capital of Italy is a normal sentence. Another example would the category "Hammer". Should we state Hammer (marteau) in French or just directly use marteau? To sum up: the category description is a description what the category contains, not what its Wikipedia Commons name is (and thus stating it's subject as early as possible in the language in question). --Migro (talk) 18:33, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
