Subordinate category organization for each military branch[edit]

In an effort to provide structure to subordinate categories for each of the military branches under this category, I recommend the following criteria for each individual category.

Category:Military decorations of the United States Air Force[edit]

This category and its subcategories contain media related to decorations specifically of the United States Air Force. Decorations used by more than one service are not contained in this category (such as Iraq Campaign Medal or Humanitarian Service Medal). Please see Category:Military decorations of the United States and its subcategories for decorations common to multiple services.

Category:Military decorations of the United States Army[edit]

Please see Category:Military decorations of the United States and its subcategories for decorations common to multiple services.

Category:Military decorations of the United States Coast Guard[edit]

This category and its subcategories contain media related to decorations specifically of the United States Coast Guard. Category:Military decorations of the United States Department of Defense[edit]

This category and its subcategories contain media related to decorations specifically of the United States Department of Defense. This includes decorations for joint service. It does not include Federal Military decorations or Federal Service medals (such as the Silver Star or the National Defense Service Medal. Decorations used by more than one service are not contained in this category (such as Iraq Campaign Medal or Humanitarian Service Medal). Please see Category:Military decorations of the United States and its subcategories for decorations common to multiple services.

Category:Military decorations of the United States Marine Corps[edit]

This category and its subcategories contain media related to decorations specifically of the United States Marine Corps or in some case decorations shared by the United States Marine Corps and the United States Navy. Decorations common to all services are not contained in this category (such as Iraq Campaign Medal or Humanitarian Service Medal). Please see Category:Military decorations of the United States and its subcategories for decorations common to all services.

Category:Military decorations of the United States Navy[edit]

This category and its subcategories contain media related to decorations specifically of the United States Navy or in some case decorations shared by the United States Marine Corps and the United States Navy. Comments[edit]

Please comment here on this proposed category criteria. Thanks! FieldMarine (talk) 01:41, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Just so you know, the system of Military Awards has been consolidated under the DOD in DoD Manual 1348.33-M “Manual of Military Decorations & Awards, dtd September 12, 1996 w-Change 1 dtd September 18, 2006.
This doesn’t replace the manuals of the subordinate services, but it does subordinate them to it. This manual delineates the various Decoration Awarding Authorities in order of seniority, and it establishes the wear seniority for all six services. That said, you need to add a separate category for “Awards and Decorations of the US Department of Defense” that is co-equal with your five suggestions, because the DOD has awards and decorations that intermix with the awards and decorations of the other five services in terms of seniority. The awards and decorations that predate the establishment of the DOD, but are either Interservice in nature or were established without a specific service in mind, would be included in this category after the fact.

Suggestion to move this and other related docs in a scheme page as can be found in Category:Commons category schemes. --Foroa (talk) 08:44, 10 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
