I have requested deletion of this template and all photos using it at Commons:Deletion requests. Please leave any comments you might have there. Thuresson 08:13, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This template has already been vetted over on Wikipedia, and it is generaly accepted The photos covered by this template are Public Domain due to their US Government nature, but there is a caveat about commercial use. If you delete this tag, then you might as well delete ALL US Government photos and graphic images, because they are ALL covered by this tag, and are the property of the United States Army Institute of Heraldy, including - believe it or not - the US Flag.

New York City watershed images[edit]

I have put your New York City watershed images up for deletion at Commons:Deletion requests#New York City watershed images, as they are copyrighted by the New York City government.--Pharos 15:07, 25 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I know what battles to fight, and what battles to leave alone, and this is one I do not intend to fight. I am aware of the view by the New York City Government on the subject, but this guy seems to think that he knows better than I do. I've been a New York City worker for 25 years, and have had contact with NYC images and photos first hand, and I know that NYC has no problems with people using and posting NYC Images and Photos as long as they are not used for commercial purposes. This is parallel with the Federal policy - which is admittedly better documented - but the fact remains that NYC totally ignores non-commercial use of their photos and images, especially when used for educational purposes. As a matter of fact, the images I posted were all from the NYC DEP's Education website, and were posted for users to download.

CORNELIUSSEON 21:25, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • What you are referring to, that certain limited noncommercial or educational uses of copyrighted works (especially works meant for public distribution) are widely tolerated, is a principle in U.S. copyright law called fair use. It is basic to fair use that works are used in an educational context and do not significantly affect the commercial value of the work to the copyright holder. This is quite different from works of the U.S. federal government, which actually are legally public domain. Wikimedia Commons has a distinct and basic policy against fair use images, for the simple reason that this is a media repository, and images are never used in context, as at Wikipedia.--Pharos 21:38, 31 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, and the US Government lets everyone use their images for all other uses without question. The images can "repose" on Commmons for the next 10,000 years, and we won't hear a peep, but those who make commercial use of the images they find here for commercial purposes WILL hear directly from the US Government, and we still won't hear a peep. The point is that if we warn those who use the images found here of the non-commercial use feature of Title 18, then we will have totally clean hands in the matter. Either way, there is no need to remove the images since we have not run afoul of Title 18. Besides, you are forgetting that if we do what you suggest, there would be NO US Government images on any of the Wikimedia resources at all. ALL graphic images produced by the US Governmentwould be banned since they are all in the custody of the US Army Institute of Military History. Congress has put all of them in their hands.

Thanks for uploading Image:4th Infantry Regiment DUI.PNG. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use GFDL-selfto release it under the GFDL orPD-selfto release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Please do not overwrite images[edit]

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. I notice that you have uploaded a new image and at the same time replaced an older one. I think you should know that this is only allowed when the two images are almost exactly alike. Here in Commons we would like to host as many different, useful versions as possible for Wikimedia projects to choose from. I have restored your image to an older version, but I hope you will upload your fine image with another name. Thank you, and happy editing! -Samulili 19:09, 1 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Given the fact that I have added so many images to the commons - all of them either from the USAIOH or the USACMH - I really have no idea which image you are talking about. If I replaced one image for another, it probably was the replacement of a Third Party Image with a First Party Image of the same subject. Please let me know which image you are talking about. -- CORNELIUSSEON 05:04, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Grammar[edit]

Please check your grammar when uploading photos. (reffering to a picture of Adolf Hitler you added, where you have written Adolph Hitler)

Sorry about that. However, it was a spelling error, NOT one of Grammar. - CORNELIUSSEON 03:57, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which information may be missing. Thank you. Siebrand 21:32, 14 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello CORNELIUSSEON!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. BotMultichillT (talk) 10:38, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

For your information, all of my military images are categorized. The category is Category:PD US Army USAIOH. It is a combined Category, and Permission Statement. If youy look at the bottom of each of my military images, you will find the category listed. - CORNELIUSSEON (talk) 15:16, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Law excerpts[edit]

Hi CORNELIUSSEON, I notice you are putting a lot of law excerpts in pages and categories on Commons. Please don't do that, Commons is not the place to host such kind of texts. I am unsure whether such texts are wanted over at Wikisource, but Commons does not focus on law excerpts. Thanks and best regards, -- ChrisiPK (Talk|Contribs) 20:30, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The "Law Excerpts" you talk about act as explanations and lists for the illustrations that are collected in the Categories, and are required to keep everyone straight when it comes to the illustrations themselves, since they are US Army Institute of Heraldry Illustrations in every case. It might have been better if you had asked me WHY I provided the information before you admonised me. It might have saved you a bit of embarrassment. Each text segment you are referring to came with the illustrations, and are part and parcel of the illustrations, as it is often impossible to identify them otherwise. - CORNELIUSSEON (talk) 20:58, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Correct me if I am wrong, but those are law excerpts, right? Anyway, I still don't see a reason why we need those here. Identifying things is a user skill and should be done by users familiar with the topic. We don't have in-detail epxlanations for every illustration we host. Why would we specifically need them for US Army Institute of Heraldry Illustrations? Regards, -- ChrisiPK (Talk|Contribs) 21:36, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, they are specific descriptive information on either each decoration or each group of decorations from AR 670-1 or from the USAIOH resource pages. I happen to be a user with more than 40 years familiarity with the topic, as I am a Retired Army Staff Sergeant with 25 years service with the Regular Army and NY Army National Guard, with the remainder in the Retired Reserve. As such, I have first-hand access to the Army Knowledge Online website, BTW, because you don't have specific information on each and every illustration, I've already found two that are incorrectly identified, and the information contained in the text I added includes the proper identification of the decoration concerned. Others have incorrect attribution and permissions, and others have ownership claimed by people who cannot claim such because ALL US Government heraldic illustrations are the property of USAIOH - especially military illustrations - and are in the Public Domain for that reason. Thus people cannot claim authorship for them. I don't have time to stop at each one and correct the information right now, but when I finish the Categorization of the USAIOH Illustrations, I will take that task on next. I've gained plenty of time to take on the whole task since I am now totally retired from work. - CORNELIUSSEON (talk) 21:52, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

These descriptions are probably released by the USAIOH, so we don't have a licensing issue with the text. However, we do have a scope issue with the specific descriptions. Commons is for media files, not for explanations how those should look. If you really think people need to see this text, please add a link pointing to the text to the categories concerned. Adding the complete text is not covered by Commons' project scope. Regards, -- ChrisiPK (Talk|Contribs) 16:47, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Project scope[edit]

Commons is for media files - if you wish to write encyclopedic content, please do so at Wikipedia. I've removed the text from that category you just created in line with out project scope.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 02:18, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The information you just removed is the proper discriptive information that belongs with those illustrations. - CORNELIUSSEON (talk) 02:41, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No it isn't. Please read the project scope.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 20:44, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I made several changes to the subordinate categories you added to the category above. These were to maintain consistency with the category scheme used throughout Category:Military decorations of the United States and because Wikipedia had cat links to some of the these categories in commons.

I have two comments:

  • I don’t agree with the addition of criteria for wear of military awards as header information for some of the categories, such as Category:Army Commendation Medal (United States). This looks like it should be in Wikipedia & not as info in categories. I’m not sure what value they add to the categories in Wikimedia Commons. However, I did not eliminate these.
  • My understanding is that use of links on dates is deprecated (at least so in Wikipedia), see Linking dates. Personally, I don’t see the value in linking dates; however, I did not remove them. If you think it does add value to link dates, I’d honestly like to know why…maybe I’m missing something here.

Thanks! FieldMarine (talk) 02:51, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

    • the biggest value for the formatting of the dates is that the system is guarranteed to format the dates on the reader's screen in accordance with the date preferences set from his computer. If you just plug in the date in the normal formats in plain text, it is possible that the system won't properly convert the format for the reader's preference. Furthermore, the format means that you can put in dates with a total of 10 Digits for any and all dates, with the computer making the translation to full length. That means that it reduces the chances of making a typographical error.
    • As for the criteria, it gives everyone a list of just what files should be found in the category. Otherwise, there are many people who would not know that there might be missing files from the category. I happen to know most of the names, and so know how to do a search to find if some of the files are out there as orphans uploaded by others. Speaking of that, btw, I've found that people who don't know the proper names for decorations are posting some of these images using madeup names, or "popular" but incorrect names. The criteria might minimize that. - CORNELIUSSEON (talk) 03:50, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unlabelled & uncategorised images[edit]

Hi there, please could you add some info these images you uploaded especially the photo Id, text & link from where they came from. Also please try to assign a couple of useful categories to them like name of the tank, what battle etc.. most military ordnance, battles etc have a category. Without this information nobody can use or even find the images.

File:Sant'Agata.Bunker.png you could add Category:Sant'Agata in Florence and Category:World War II in Italy or a more specific category (WWI is my field, not WWII)

File:Troina-1943.png you could add Category:Historical images of Sicily and Category:Operation Husky

File:Palermo-Assault-Map.png you could add Category:Operation Husky and Category:Maps of World War II in Italy

File:Sherman-Tank-in-Sicily.png you could add Category:M4 Sherman and Category:Operation Husky

By adding text and categories people would then be able to search for specific things, places, times.

Here's an example of troops and a tank in WWI : File:Canadian tank and soldiers Vimy 1917.jpg

It has been added to Categories :

so people interested in different aspects of the photo can find it : from point of view of troops, battle or type of tank.

Contact me if you need help with this. regards, Rod Rcbutcher (talk) 07:55, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Incidentally, all of these images are linked to the single article they came from over on Wikisource, which is the USACMH History of the Sicily Campaign of World War II. How do I place a category over here that links over to Wikisource? The one I will add here for the whole bunch on this source will be for the Sicily Campaign. - CORNELIUSSEON (talk) 15:28, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I forgot. I went looking, and they ARE categorized. You can find them all in the following category: . - CORNELIUSSEON (talk) 15:35, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

3rd Infantry Regiment[edit]

Hello CORNELIUSSEON! I´m writing you because a few weeks ago, I noticed that the current image displaying the 3rd Rgt. COA that appears on the respective article is a .png extension file. Because of this, I decided to elaborate a higher res .svg version of the file to replace the former one, and wanted to get your impressions about it before I incorporate it in the article. Would that be possible? Thank you very much --Lancaster (talk) 03:42, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for upgrading it to SVG, but I had to correct the information page to reflect the facts. The Image - and others like it - have been placed in the Public Domain by the US Army Institute of Heraldry, but they retain ownership in the name of the United States Government, and the People of the United States, and Copyright cannot pass to anyone. Using your information, I corrected your credit to that of upgrading the image from PNG to SVG, and the date of the upgrade. - SSG Cornelius Seon (US Army, Retired) (talk) 15:59, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Attention:

The stated source "US Army Center of Military History" is not sufficient. Was it a scan? Is it from the WEB? If yes; URL? Here you can find all information you need to source a file properly. --High Contrast (talk) 19:12, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I suppose that you must be new here, otherwise you would be aware of the US Army Center of Military History images that are on Wikicommons, and have been for some time. One location you can find them on Wikisource is Category:Publication Elements of the United States Army. Another is Category:US Army Center of Military History Photographs.
On the Web, you can find them all at US Army Center Of Military History. Those you find here are here simply because they are being used for pages over on Wikipedia and Wikisource.
As to Scanned versus Web, the CMH is working so that there will no longer be any difference since the vast majority of CMH’s published volumes are being converted literally from Paper to Web, including several Paper volumes that are no longer in print, and the trend is to produce new volumes as both Web and Paper simultaneously, with the two versions produced from the same electronic file.

Your Email[edit]

Hello! You have written: The image comes - as indicated - from the US Army Center of Military History. It is part of CMH Publication 60-14, Maneuver and Firepower: The Evolution of Divisions and Separate Brigades.

You have to state this information on this certain file site, than rather sending me this information. I am not interested in this information - the community needs this information! Read COM:L, there you find ALL information you need to state source information correctly. --High Contrast (talk) 20:09, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, the photo was used - in this case - for that publication, but it is to be found in many such publications since it is a file photo that probably was first used in 60-14, but has been used elsewhere since then. A question[edit]

Say, why are you uploading these CMH images with such puny resolution as PNGs? They are available in much better quality at the CMH web site! Compare e.g. File:CMH 1001 MAP THREE.png, where one cannot see anything, with the CMH version, linked through this thumbnail in this publication? Lupo 11:26, 13 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

P.S.: Now uploaded as File:Buna-Sanananda 1942-11-18.jpg. Lupo 11:37, 13 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
They are uploaded at such low resolutin (some at 72 PX and others at 100 PX or 300 PX because at full resolution they exceed the resolution permitted on Wikicommons If you look at the record, I had to upload this file and a few others at least twice before the file would resolve to an image. At full resolution the files are set at 600 PX. Another point, Commons will send you a warning about uploading JPG. They want - at the very least - PNG, but prefer SVG. -SSG Cornelius Seon (US Army, Retired) (talk) 02:20, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thumbnail at the default size (which depends on your preferences' settings).
Thumbnail scaled to a width of 400 pixels
What? That's just confused. We accept jpeg, jpg, JPG just fine. We generally prefer the highest resolution possible. It makes no sense to transform a JPG original into a PNG. For photos, we actually prefer JPG. For maps that already are jpgs, it makes no sense to convert them to PNG; just upload the JPG file. PNG (or SVG) is good for self-drawn diagrams or maps, but hardly anything else.
To scale an image, give them reasonable sizes. The default thumbnail size is 180 pixels wide (see at the right), which is a bit small. But you can give a reasonable size manually using (see at the left). Using "2000px" like you did at s:US Army Campaigns of World War II Series/Papua/Introduction isn't that good: it's much too wide. Use a width of at most 600 pixels; people who want to see the image at its true size can click on it and are then taken to the image description page, where they have a link to the image at its true resolution.
As to sourcing, it's always helpful if you include a link back to the original source. Not to the "naked" image, but to the publication in which the image appears.
Hope that helps. Lupo 08:53, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

When I first started to upload images here in 2005, I indeed uploaded them in JPG format, which is the format that CMH and IOH uses for their images. I was soon disabused of that notion by people over here who said that they wanted all Vector Graphics in PNG format. Not satisfied with that, another group overruled the PNG crowd and said that they wanted them in SVG format. I was able to accommodate the PNG crowd, because my software includes a JPG to PNG Converter, but I couldn't accommodate the SVG crowd because I don't have access to a JPG or PNG to SVG Converter. To hear you say that I can stop converting from JPG to PNG is welcome news because it eliminates a couple of steps that are somewhat cumbersome, and makes it much easier to upload the images.

As to sourcing, I have no problem with embeding the URL of the CMH and IOH sites, which are currently the sources of 100% of the images I upload at the present time. BTW, while on this subject, let me clear up one problem I see with the Source issue. The US Army Institute of Heraldry is ALWAYS the source for US Governmental Heraldry images. All other sources are secondary sources of images that were originated at the IOH. This includes people who sit down at their drawing board, or their computer, and produce close or exact likenesses of IOH Images. They are free to produce those images, but can only ascribe authorship and source to the IOH, with their role limited to Editorship.

File:MarksmanBadge.jpg[edit]

Hi, you changed a good photo of the badge against a very week drawing. This is not an improvement of the file itself. Used with other photographs of qualification fireing badged in the article "6941st Guard Battalion" an inconsist imageing of these badges is the result. For this reasons I wood ask you to move your file e.g. to "MarksmanBadge (drawing).jpg" and reinstall the original file "MarksmanBadge.jpg". Because of a consistant imageing of the former named article I, as the main author, will upload the original file, if you won't. -- Shotgun (talk) 18:59, 11 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you go to this Category,Category:Marksmanship_badges_and_tabs_of_the_US_Army you will find two examples of that badge, plus more. SSG Cornelius Seon (US Army, Retired) (talk) 00:08, 12 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, photos of IOH images are NOT identical to the IOH image, and actually don't present the images as they were originally created. IOH Images are always Drawings, NOT photographs, and all of them created prior to about 2005 were created as Ink and Pen Drawings. Newer IOH images are created with Software that creates a decent approximation of a Pen and Ink Drawing. The problem with this is that there are three primary manufacturers of devices created by IOH, and there are subtle differences between the products of those manufacturers, and none of them are exact translations. SSG Cornelius Seon (US Army, Retired) (talk) 00:37, 12 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding your edit: Commons hosts only media files, and most of this media files are photographs. It not make sense to add the type of media file to every category name. We have media files related to Category:Hats but not Category:Photographs of hats, we have files related to Category:London but not Category:Photographs of London although Commons hosts a large amount of photographs showing hats or London. --Martin H. (talk) 03:38, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What I am doing is developing the categorization system. There is no rule that says that just because a category has yet to exist that it cannot be allowed to exist. Indeed, the reverse is true. The more developed the categorization system, the easier it is to find the specific image a person is looking for. SSG Cornelius Seon (US Army, Retired) (talk) 03:56, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with you that we need to improve the category system. Your idea only creates an extra cascade in the category system, so it only makes it harder to find. If such a category (military formations) requires diffusion you can think of so many alternatives. Separating the badges/symbols is a very good idea, other separations might be special technical equipment etc., so category diffusion by subject. Additional you can categorize by location (e.g. xy in Afghanistan) or by time or event (xy in Vietnam war, xy in the 1970s). At the moment you only separate graphs and images. I not toke a look at the graphs. In my phantasy I think of an illustration showing the positions of a Unit in Iraq war and a photograph of the unit in Iraq war - in my phantasy your category separates things belonging strongly together and groups it with other unrelated files. --Martin H. (talk) 05:10, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, the way a category tree system should work is exactly the way I established this tree: You start by looking for the first word, then look down the tree until you find the second word, et cetera, ad infinitum. As to your grouping issue, it is true on the face of it, but you are looking at only one aspect. I grouped sub-categories that belonged to the military unit named in the Category. In fact, you can also group them together by adding a secondary category tree that groups all military unit illustrations together; all Military Unit photographs together, and all Military Heraldic Items together. Actually, the last one already exists, not necessarily under that name. One of the beauties of an electronic filing system is that there is no single categorization system that will fit the needs of all people, so you can let multiple categorization systems co-exist to suit as many people as possible without interfering with any single individual's search. Better source request for Image:3270 US Army Hospital DUI.png[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:3270 US Army Hospital DUI.png. You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Galleries[edit]

I have deleted two of your recent new pages:

for two reasons

  • Commons Galleries are intended for collections of images on a single subject. While a small amount of explanatory text is permitted, the bulk of the page must be images. These are articles and belong in WP:EN, not here. I note that there is no article for the 134th on WP:EN. If you would like, I can put it on a subpage of your user page so you can create it there. The 211th Military Police Battalion already has a WP:EN article, including a section on heraldry, which you might add to.
  • Commons Galleries begin without any prefix so that correct names for these (if they were otherwise OK as galleries) would be:

Also, although gallery naming does not have strict rules, better names would have been:

as putting the most general word first will generally lead to better search engine results.      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 13:32, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Later: The same applies to:

     Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 13:35, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Which means that you are saying this information has nowhere to go. Wikipedia says it belongs on Commons, since it is the official descriptive information for USAIOH Images. When I put it on the Image Pages, I was told by people here that it belonged on the Category pages. Next I was told, NO, it belongs on Gallery Pages. you guys need to make up your mind. As of now, those images are now orphaned, with NO descriptive information anywhere at all.-SSG Cornelius Seon (US Army, Retired) (talk) 15:11, 22 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I can't help you without links for the statements you make above -- where did who say what? It is possible that you have run across an editor or two that didn't really understand the rules -- if so, I'll try to help, although military heraldry is not a field I know very much about. I can say, though, that 211th Military Police Battalion already has an article on WP:EN, with similar information, so it would seem to me that parallel articles for the other three would be not just OK, but good contributions. Did you try that?      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 15:55, 22 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, I am one of many people who ran afoul of the Wikipedia Police a many years ago, so I cannot post over there, and I've tendered my resignation over there as a result. Indeed, this issue is one of the things that got me banned over there. What is most likely happening is that they are copying the information I have posted here over there. If I stop posting, they lose their source of information, which is ironic since I am the person who started the whole Military Article/image situation on both sites. Incidentally, if you read any of the Image data, it gives all the data necessary to spot a phony image, gives amateur artists the data they need to create an accurate copy, and lets users know just what images are missing from the page, and what they look like._SSG Cornelius Seon (US Army, Retired) (talk) 16:24, 22 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think I found a solution. Since I am using Source Information, I can post the whole kit and kaboodle intact over on Wikisource. I will continue to establish Categories over here to keep related images together, but there should be a way to link the source article on Wikisource and the Commons Catagories. I'll see how things go.-SSG Cornelius Seon (US Army, Retired) (talk) 16:40, 22 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Thank you for your contributions. Your image or other content, ::Category:10th Mountain Division Heraldry, was recently deleted, or will soon be deleted, in accordance with our process and policies, because it was not, or is not, within our scope. Please review our project scope, but in short, Commons is targeted at educational media files including photographs, diagrams, animations, music, spoken text and video clips. The expression “educational” is to be understood according to its broad meaning of “providing knowledge; instructional or informative”. Wikimedia Commons does not contain text articles like encyclopedia articles, textbooks, news, word definitions and such. Each of these other kinds of content have their own projects: Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wikinews, Wiktionary and Wikiquote. If the content seems to fit the scope of one of those other projects, please consider contributing it there. Otherwise, consider an alternative outlet. If you think that the deletion was in error because the contribution really was in scope, you can appeal it at Commons:Undeletion requests, giving a reason why it fits our scope to help others evaluate the matter. Thank you for your understanding.

  • Category: 10th Mountain Division Heraldry is one of many categories in a project that categorize the US Army Institute of Heraldry Public Domain images of Insignia worn or displayed for individuals or units of the US Army. As such, the images so categorized are used on many of those other Wikis you refer to. The data that accompany those images explain the significance of the images, and help searchers to place them where they belong on those other Wikis. File:1144TransBnCOA.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
