A few unauthorized tips[edit]

Disclaimer: This is not an attempt to create policy on Commons, just a few tips to avoid cluttering of files and to prevent art from disappearing into "unexpected" categories.

Marine art is one of the 11 genres that the artwork in Commons can be classified by. It is used for art that portrays the sea. When you upload (or review) a reproduction of marine art, please try to take the following considerations:

  • Which medium of marine art is the original? Is it a marine painting, a drawing, a print and so on? They all have categories.
  • What is the central subject of the artwork? Very important, so some hints here:
    • If it is a coast with some unspecified ships or boats, use the medium categories mentioned above, but try to add the century when the artwork was produced.
    • If it is a specific ship, then first look for a category for that specific ship and place it there. Also, for the art side of things, be as specific as possible about the type of ship, for example Category:19th-century sailing ships in paintings or Category:Brigs in art.
    • If it is ships taking part in a naval battle, then use the categories for that.
    • If there are no ships or boats involved, go for one of the Seascape categories.
    • If the main subject is a beach, a lighthouse or so on, then use those categories instead.
  • Who made the original artwork? If possible, add a creator template. This will also give you some idea of which century category to apply, for instance Category:17th-century marine paintings.
  • Where is the original artwork? Always important.
  • What part of the world is shown? Again, be specific. There are categories for a lot of coastal towns, for islands, and so on - and people living there might be happy to discover an artwork from their history. If there is no significant landscape shown, then don't use this type of category.

If you have any additions or corrections to this, your contributions are welcome. --Rsteen (talk) 11:55, 15 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Oursana. Not quite sure what you mean. Yes, they are all "marine paintings", but in the "Seascape paintings" category we put those that concentrate on showing the waves. Cheers Rsteen (talk) 01:59, 7 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
