An (exo)narthex (also called the outer narthex) forms the outer entrance to the building and bounds the esonarthex, which opens onto the nave. The one in the Hagia Sophia is has a simple brick ceiling ands brick walls. Five doors lead to the esonarthex. In the exonarthesx several objects are displayed, such as an porphyry altar, a sarcophagus of some empres, a large vessel with a snake on its surface, its head entering the bowl. The head has worn considerably and is hardly recognizable. Panels provide information. There also is a copy of decision, past by a general synod, held in the Aya Sofia in 1166.
