An exonarthex forms the outer entrance to the building and bounds the esonarthex, which opens onto the nave. Also called the inner narthex. The one in the Hagia Sophia is marble-clad with an adorned ceiling and has the Imperial Gate in its centre. At the south side a door leads to the Vestibule of the Warriors. At the other end starts a ramp (with first some steps) to the upper floor.
