A giant puppet is designed for street performance, so it must be tall enough to allow all or most of the crowd to see it. Giant puppets are usually manipulated manually by puppeteers (although electronic controls may be included). Giant puppets often move in such a natural manner, that they can maintain the illusion of being live creatures while all the puppeteers and mechanics are fully visible. The controls used by puppeteers vary greatly from puppet to puppet. Design and control systems are under constant development.

Some theatre animation puppets (such as War Horse) can be used in street entertainment, but their size is designed for the stage, and because they are not usually tall enough to entertain a crowd of thousands standing on the same level, they cannot be called giant puppets.

Note: The above-linked Figures of giants are not puppets, they are worn as costumes, and their limbs are not manipulated separately from the wearer's own limbs.
