Theresienstadt concentration camp occupied a portion of w:Terezin, a military fortress built between 1780 and 1790, known as the Small Fortress (a prison for political prisoners). Gavrilo Princip, who assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife, was incarcerated at the Small Fortress at the time of his death. During World War II, the Gestapo converted the town of Terezin into a Ghetto while the Small Fortress became a Concentration camp.
