First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

I need your help[edit]

My account at English wikipedia is registered as 'Durand Border'. I am a new user at en.wikipedia. I have created my account a couple of days ago. I have done no wrong thing. Someone evil doer shares his IP address with me. I have made just 2 contributions and my account is unable to contribute. I request you to lift this block. I am unable to request it on my talkpage beCause i can not even edit my talkpage. I have done no wrong thing. Please lift the block from my IP address. I request for a last chance[edit]

A few days ago, I started a page with the name 'Pornography in Saudi Arabia'. I had made only one edit to it when it was listed at AfD. My lack of knowledge that I moved it to draft when it was listed at AfD. When the draft appeared, it said AfD tag was used in a weong place i.e. Draft should not bear that tag. My fault I removed AfD tag from draft. This is the thing for which I have been blocked. I also made unblock request to request I shall not do it again, but two administratores SpacemanSpiff and Alex Shih are even not ready to listen to me. They immediately decline my reqyest. Zzuuzz, I really want to make constructive edits to improve our encyclopedia. I also promise i shall not make any such edits again in future. I'm asking for a last chance. Please give me a final chance to prove i want to make constructive edits. Please unblock me as a last chance and final warning. I shall be very, very thankful to you for your co-operation. Admins have blocked about 20 innocent users. I do not know them, they probably share their IP addresses with me. Please put a look at https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Nazim_Hussain_Pak&markasread=115630921 . This is a mistreat with me and innocent uses. In regard to this conversation with User:Geo Swan, you don't need my permission to look at my IP, but feel free to do so. Geo Swan was being targeted by IP editors before I arrived and will probably be targeted by them after I leave. I assume his passive-aggressive walls of bulleted self-serving text annoyed someone enough that they're not going away. Either that or it's someone he knows in real life. Either way, it isn't me. I am not active on Wikipedia because I am blocked there. I thought that was discussed. If it is "stalkerish" to look at someone's Wikipedia contributions when they have a history of making accusations about you, then I guess I am. this may be helpful. I know I got a bit out of control, Do a check user run and you will see I created them using one of many of my ip's. Also here is one of the messages I left Bigteddy [4].
