File:Flag of China.svg

Hi Last try: I want to inform you that on the current National Flag of the People Republic of China on wikimedia, the 4 small stars have the correct relative position and size in the flag, but are orientated, slightly but significant wrongly.

Please don't tell me you have official sheets which show this misspointing -- I don't believe you -- or need a "proof" that my interpretation is right. :-( I will try to upload a new version of this flag, and if this doesn't succeed (because file protection) I will stop helping to show correct national flags -- and effectively support wikimedia to strengthen its reputation of presenting amateurish and want-to-be facts.

- It is rather annoying that you neither get a hint that upload is denied / protected nor have a possibility to change the filename after everything you had done already.

It is a very bad decision, that people who are interested in a topic and deliver moreover wikipedia/wikimedia with information for this topic for publication, also act as superusers / admins with the power to protect their own work against changes. This kind remains me strongly at "bannane republic" politcs. Sorry.

In the case Wikimedia changes their arbitrary politics and you are interested in my support again, you can deliver me a a note on my talk page. I should get a notice by email then. Achim1999 (talk) 20:21, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

In this case, you are right on this one. I have the official specs and it confirms to everything you mentioned. I went ahead and changed the image to your version. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 20:38, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, I was gonna ask about getting the new arms on there. Fry1989 eh? 21:46, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

I am still not sure about the right size of the arms (I kept the width) but I admit this is one of the more confusing specifications I have read in a long time. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 21:50, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
But as you can tell from above, a few things came up. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 21:51, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
Yeah I noticed :D Fry1989 eh? 22:08, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
Makes me want to look for more sheets again, but honestly, I tapped out nearly everything. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 22:24, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

Help nedded

Can you take a look at File:Saronic Gulf map-hr.svg picture? The second version has two names of islands (Speces and Dokos, in the bottom of the picture). They are visible in full screen and in thumbnails in file history only. In picture preview above infobox and in the articles those two islands are not visible. What's wrong with file?--MaGa 05:54, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

I think it is just Wikimedia not working correctly, since this does this a lot to me in other SVGs that I do. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 06:00, 24 May 2012 (UTC)
Any suggestions about this? I have noticed that fonts in many cases are not displayed correctly. In this case also.--MaGa 06:13, 24 May 2012 (UTC)
Put the text into paths (instead of flowing). User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 06:40, 24 May 2012 (UTC)
I also use Corel; this is more of an issue with Wikimedia than anything else. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 06:43, 24 May 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, will see with user Nanin7, if he can do something.--MaGa 07:14, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Flags of Norway

Are you aware of any specific Norwegian Government guidelines on the colours of the flag? File:Flag of Norway.svg states the colours in RGBs and Pantone, but doesn't have an actual direct source. I would like to change the Norwegian flag to the colours set on this version, which is more realistic. Fry1989 eh? 01:44, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

http://www.norway.no/oss/#a6703 gives 032 U Red and 281 U, so does http://www.regjeringen.no/nb/dokumentarkiv/stoltenberg-ii/ud/Lover-og-regler/Reglement/2006/instruks_for_utenrikstjenesten/13.html?id=260737. I also seen versions where it is 200 Red C and 281 Blue C, but those are not described in legislation. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 02:20, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

Flag of Rwanda

Hi

Your adoption of http://www.primature.gov.rw/component/option,com_docman/task,doc_download/gid,859/Itemid,95/. is not checkable because the URL is no longer valid. Thus my question: What should be the inner and the outer diameter of the 24-pointed sun and its position relative to the flag height resp. width according to this official info? The coded values look like measured by hand on a real flag (Is this the reason of having such big absolute values there?). There are errors regarding the sun's rotation symmetry of up to 1%! So these 4 or 5 digit values after the decimal point look like random data after the decimal point. :-( E.g. the outer radius variates between 350.0315 and 346.5686 in a strongly systematic kind (the inner between 113.1733 and 109.7390).

BTW: The inner circle of the cresent of the Malaysian flag is wrong coded. It contradicts the official construction sheet.

PS: I now have left 80 national flags to check and 128 are checked. Achim1999 (talk) 20:00, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

For Rwanda, I used "Official_Gazette_n°_16_of_20.04.2009," which contained "LAW N° 34/2008 OF 08/08/2008 ON CHARACTERISTICS, DESCRIPTION, CEREMONIAL AND RESPECT OF THE NATIONAL FLAG." Here are the two pages from that document to show the construction details, but I think the actual law might be wrong? http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v76/zscout370/?action=view&current=rwanda1.jpg and http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v76/zscout370/?action=view&current=rwanda2.jpg are the sheets. As for Malaysia, the only thing I know is the otter crescent is 6 units (in an 8 unit hoist) according the sheet, but the inside of the crescent is not certain. But I will check it over. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 20:18, 27 May 2012 (UTC)
Thank you. Now I'm able to make a hopefully correct SVG-file of the national flag. Yes, the law sheet contains this 0.125 -> 0.215 typo for D (correct should be D=43/200*Y). But this was already taken care in the current SVG-file. But the current data located the center of the sun at cx="2659.5015" and cy="562.56754" , but correct should be cx="2659.5" and cy="564.3" if I use this (typo-corrected) construction sheet.
Tomorrow evening or night (my timezone is UTC+2) I will upload all these SVG-files on a private server. I will give you a pointer to its URL. So you should be able to download all SVG-files you like and use/publish them as an update on wikimedia-commons. Achim1999 (talk) 21:33, 27 May 2012 (UTC)
A further remark: outer radius should be 348.3 and the inner 108 (simply flag height/20). Undefined is still the width of the blue circle inside. I used the value which was in the old SVG-file. At least stroke-width + radius sumed up to 108. :) Achim1999 (talk) 22:29, 27 May 2012 (UTC)
I think a lot of these errors are from the software itself, since there are many times myself or others would make sure the elements are at the exact spot, but the code might be different (and have a translate directional on it. A lot of the construction sheets I got are public information, so I can try and send everything I got. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 01:35, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

construction/definiton sheets/description for flags should be given always

Well, about numerical data errors (like previous SVG of Rwanada national flag):

How significant are these errors? I think errors > 0.1% are worth of correction. If the flags are coded as SVG, then best is to give all numerical data inside at least to 1 ppm relative precise or set comments inside the file saying which precise algebraic numbers the non-exact fractionally literal values should be.

I have started today to provide a pseudo-SVG as a construction sheet for the flag I checked. Moreover, I think you should add such a construction sheet (or describe in simple cases precisely(!) with english words) ALWAYS which you used here on Wikimedia-commons to construct the flag and put this information in the "Flag of XXX"-page (the description page of the flag), IMHO. It is really annoying to discover inside a SVG-file a, say, 14-pointed star totally coded with an absolute path-directive and you have to get from this list of values its center-coordinates and radii (and perhaps even rotational shift). What do you think? Achim1999 (talk) 09:43, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

If the sheet is online, I'll link it. I always try and provide a construction sheet for all of the flags I change or upload. If it is something I cannot upload, I always give the name of the document I use (and email the sheet if asked). I am not sure if an SVG construction sheet should be provided, but something MUST be shown. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 18:42, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
There should be a construction sheet or Wiki-pointer in the Wikimedia-Domain from the description of "File:Flag of XXX", not somewhere. And best, if I know the exact name of the flag-file, I know what the Wiki-URL for its construction sheet is -- this is the point. :) Moreover a link into the WWW is dubious, as this can be broken / stale.
I provided this pseudo-SVG for my own, I didn't upload it on Wiki for public use. Achim1999 (talk) 20:51, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
Right, but there are sometimes I just cannot draw a construction sheet due to time and I will link it. I also save a copy on my computer so I can consult it later, even if the website goes dark. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 00:18, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

my collection of national flags

Here is the link I promised you yesterday:

http://0xc.de/flags/table.html (sorted by flag adoption age)

http://0xc.de/flags/tab_sz.html (sorted by SVG coding length) -- currently I have checked all following the flag of Kenya in the main table. Thus now still 72 flags left in this part.

I want to have all national flags at a glance -- work still in progress. The link to the construction sheets (click on the name of the country) doesn't work (it shows the area of the country in the link).

Achim1999 (talk) 21:59, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

From taking a quick glance, Myanmar is wrong. The ratio was 4x7 until it was recently changed to 2x3. The star looks correct, since it is 2/3rds of the total width of the flag. I got the construction sheet, so does FOTW. For Kosovo, I first seen the flag as 2x3, then it got changed to 5:7 when http://www.gazetazyrtare.com/e-gov/tr/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=351&Itemid=28 was passed. That is the only thing I notice so far. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 00:17, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for both notes. I only had forgoten to change the legend from 4:7 to 2:3. If you hold the mouse pointer above the last entry of any flag (the flag's proportion & number of colors) you get displayed its date -- and it is valid in this case from 2010-10-21 until today . :)
The flag of Kosovo I still haven't checked. But I will correct the stated value there of course. Achim1999 (talk) 11:02, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
Yep, again an error in the legend of the flag of Kosovo. Flagfile is correctly 5:7. Achim1999 (talk) 12:25, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
http://0xc.de/flags/tab_ratio.html (sorted by flag ratio) -- I discovered a further ratio-mistake. Achim1999 (talk) 15:26, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

Flag of Malawi

Now that I don't know. BTW, Malawi's flag changed yet again. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 19:34, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

You broke several links/consistencies by changing this flag-file. :-( E.g. The page in en-wikipedia [[1]] there are two pictures, one with legend "2010-2012 flag FIAV 111110.svg Flag ratio: 2:3" and one with legend "1964–2010, 2012- flag". The first shows now the wrong (reactivated) flag, and the other nothing. :-(. I think it is in general a bad idea to overload things which can change with time significantly! Better naming convention: put a date into the file-name to avoid such misconcepts. Anyway, thanks for your note about this change. I am just working on code clean/reducing of the old SVG-file (11 kB). Achim1999 (talk) 20:58, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
I just uploaded my code reduction of the reactivated flag. If you think there are still too many comments or superfluouis code, please say this -- also if you would like to see more comments or a different SVG-style. Thanks. Achim1999 (talk) 22:28, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
Generally, I don't like textual descriptions in the SVG file, it can be used on the Wiki itself. Also, to save you some time, you can use #fff for White and no color codes and that would be automatically blank. As for the breaking of things on the English Wikipedia, it happens a lot when a flag change happens (so it is not new). Also, I rarely deal with a situation where a flag goes back to something historic (and I know it just happened with Libya) so there is a lot that I am still learning. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 04:15, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
I wonder what you mean by 'Scaling issues'. Thus I downloaded your modified version and compare with my original uploaded. Except this deleted 'fill="#000#' you changed only the attribute-value of height in the very first svg-executable statement

<rect x="-225" y="-114" width="450" height="100"/> to <rect x="-225" y="-114" width="450" height="300"/>

I wonder why -- resp. what happened if you displayed the original version? Achim1999 (talk) 10:18, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
Well, when you shrink the flag down to icon size, there will be lines appearing where the stripes are at (and it is not just with Malawi but also with flags). By having one of the stripes (mostly the top one) take up all of the field, you will reduce/solve this problem. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 18:27, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
I don't know what you call icon-size. Neither do I waht you mean by "there will be lines appearing". If the total flag size gets 10x5 pixels, well there arise problems when dividing 5 lines equal up into 3 sections ;-) But seriously, this sounds more like a specific renderer problem, than a SVG-coding problem. Achim1999 (talk) 20:35, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
Like 40px and under, but it is mostly a rendering issue (and we usually try and fix those). User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 20:36, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

File:Flag_of_New-Zealand.svg

Sadly, noone has noticed that all the margins of all 4 stars are wrongly calculated/constructed. Their white border width should be all equal to 1/12 of the flags height. Inside the SVG-code there are always put two stars upon each other, a red centered onto a white, which differ by a scaling factor of 10. Knowning that the absolute height of the flag is 600 px, 1/12 means 5 px and scaling (by 10) made margins on "both opposite" sides of the star. All correctly. But they forgot that we don't scale squares which are orthogonally to the coordinate axis, but star-edges of angle 18°! That means that we have a border-width reduced by a factor of sin(18°) = 0.30901699. So the white stars must be scaled up by an additional additive constant of 1/sin(18°) = 3.236068! I wonder that noone noticed/overlooked this thinking-error -- optical their border is too thin by about 1/3! Moreover I assume that the File:Flag_of_New_Zealand.svg is blocked for uploading, am I right? Achim1999 (talk) 22:29, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

I guessed wrongly. Upload successfull. Achim1999 (talk) 23:37, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
I think at the time, the software I had did not like drawing a star with a border. But good job. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 02:41, 31 May 2012 (UTC)

Small request

Since I've made a couple for you, could you maybe make my request for the Pakistani Federal Shariat Court coat of arms and flag? It's pretty much just adding a couple words and changing a ribbon at the bottom. I honestly don't expect a take for the Supreme Court because of it's caligraphic Urdu, it was just a shot-in-the-dark request, but the Shariat Court is all in English. If you are up to it, there's no rush, just thought I'd ask since nobody's shown interest for a couple weeks. Fry1989 eh? 01:25, 31 May 2012 (UTC)

I'll put it on my to-do, but I started working so a lot of things have been put on the backburner. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 02:41, 31 May 2012 (UTC)

Flag of Morocco.svg

Hi! I want to reconstruct your adoption of the Moroccan flag here on Wikimedia-commons. There are many absolute path data inside the SVG-file. :-/ And before I am again confused by numeric "errors", I like to ask you: What should be the exact layout of the star in the flag? To be precise I need to know 3 parameters:

1) Should this 5-pointed star height-centered? (Top "head" and both bottom "feet" of the star have the same distance to the flag's upper resp. lower edge). If not, on which height should it be placed?

2) What should its radius be (relative to the flag size) in regard to either its centerline or its outerline?

3) What is the width of the green stroke and the width of the black stroke (or the total stroke) (relative to the flag size)? Achim1999 (talk) 14:29, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

As for Morocco, surprising, I did not do this one. I did a version in 2005 "(show/hide) 18:22, 22 December 2005 . . Zscout370 (talk | contribs | block) 450 × 300 (1,384 bytes) (I changed the flag to 300x450, the star height and width is 100x100, and chose the colors http://www.mincom.gov.ma/english/generalities/intro/index.htm. I release the changes as PD.)" but what is being display now is based from the Soviet document http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_Morocco_%28GOST_construction%29.jpg and that was done in 2010. As for what the details of the flag should look like, I do not have any right now and I do not really know for sure. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 18:47, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, but I think there is a misunderstanding. The file "http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_Morocco.svg" looks differnt from this JPEG in http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_Morocco_%28GOST_construction%29.jpg. There the 5-star is a bit smaller and centered by mass-center. But this is not the case in the current Flag_of_Morocco.svg". Moreover I don't know how to see all older versions. I see only the last 6 versions, with the oldest from 15:34, 19 January 2010 . Furthermore the author(s) are listed as "Denelson83, Zscout370". Achim1999 (talk) 20:39, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
It was deleted for some reason (I am an admin, so I am able to see older versions). Though, I did work on the image in 2005, a lot of things happened to it since then and I am not sure who did what. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 20:44, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
Hmm ... This sounds like one doesn't know how it should look now :-( --- a big point if one had(!) a standard link pointing to its current construction description. I will wait a few days whether you can clearify this issue. Achim1999 (talk) 20:59, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
I'm trying to find something, but so far no luck. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 21:05, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
I have tried searching in English, Beber, Arabic and now in French to see if I can find anything. The only thing I found was just what was in the Constitution "L'emblème du Royaume est le drapeau rouge frappé en son centre d'une étoile verte à cinq branches." I need to maybe contact the Embassy and find out. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 00:37, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
Here is our answer: http://www.mpm.gov.ma/reglementation/dahir/code_CM_28joumada.pdf "Code de commerce maritime du 28 joumada II 1337 (31 mars 1919) (B.O.du 26mai 1919, p. 478 et rectif. 15 ao ût 1930, p. 953)." It says here that for the flag used at sea, the diameter of the star is 1/3rd of the width of the flag. It also says there are only two colors on the flag, red and green. Going to upload my drawing and see what you think. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 01:43, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
To be picky as you:
1) This was the status of 1930! :)
2) It describes the flag over sea -- many countries have different sea layout.
3) Even if there are only 2 colors, the green cross may have an alternating crossing! (Made by a red border).
Here is a 640x400 video of a living unknown morrocian embassy flag: [[2]]. 1/3 size centered at the perimeter radius seems to be okay from this video. Sadly it is not decisable whether the green star is alternating crossed or plain. But the green looks darker than the one you used. Achim1999 (talk) 18:01, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
I checked with other legislation and so far, there is nothing that makes this invalid (superseded). There is a specific naval flag used now, which includes a crown, but I have not found that specification yet. As for the embassy flags, they do use interlacing patterns (but in both this and the Constitution, it was never stated on what the star should look like). We got multiple versions of this flag on here, so users get to pick. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 18:07, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
If morrocian embassys use interlacing star -- I think this is the decision of the goverment to be the official flag --, then we should show this layout too! But I have a rather good snapshot here [| moroccanian flag inside the Canberra embassy]. I can't see an interlacing star, it looks plain to me. (I only still wondering why using this interlacing layout -- or who first used it) But you really need a darker green. Achim1999 (talk) 18:16, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
I seen government flags use both patterns, all sort of sizes, so unless I find something new (and official in legislation), I am going to stick with this layout. As for the colors, the naval code just says natural red and natural green and I have not found anything from the Moroccan Government to say what is correct. The only thing I got was that is when this flag was used at the 2008 Olympics, the Pantone is 348 (according to the Beijing 2008 Olympics Flag Protocol Guide). User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 18:21, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
Hmm ... but then I must ask: Why do you choose the plain layout -- in contrast to the previous flag with interlacing star, if it is "about equal judged" in usage? Achim1999 (talk) 18:35, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
Most of the drawings here now show a solid flag even before I found a specification yesterday. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 18:40, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
If we consider the plain star as correct, the only open question of the flag layout (except from colors) is its stoke-width, isn't it? Achim1999 (talk) 19:01, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
I agree with the question, but as for an answer, I have no clue. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 20:51, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
I just stumpled across "File:Flag of Morocco (construction).svg". It doesn't seem to match your newly upload of the Morrocan Flag. Such a kind of link is very likly to have / to add for each uploaded SVG-file! Just proved again. :-( What is your comment to this contradicting construction sheet? Hi, I think you should probably delete this agin - see Commons:Help_desk#Copyright_help_regarding_File:Mikogo-logo-small.jpg. "Charlotte" wants an NC ND licence, which would fail COM:L. -mattbuck (Talk) 18:28, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

In her email May 30th, she said "I agree to [publish that work under the free license "Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0" (unported) and GNU Free Documentation License (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts).]" But I guess she chose the wrong license? Ok, I will redelete. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 18:32, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
Can you email back to find out? -mattbuck (Talk) 18:46, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
What happened was that I sent an email today saying permissions granted, and restored the image. Then she comes and changes the license. But since it was only 2 days ago she sent the email, I wouldn't press the issue too much. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 18:54, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

Coat of arms of the Czech Republic

Can you please upload my new File:Coat of arms of the Czech Republic-edit.svg over File:Coat of arms of the Czech Republic.svg, which is protected? I've fixed a small error with the outer black border, and reduced the file size a little. Thanks. Fry1989 eh? 01:30, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

The same with File:Small coat of arms of the Czech Republic-edit.svg and File:Small coat of arms of the Czech Republic.svg. And you can delete my two separate uploads afterwards. Fry1989 eh? 01:50, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
I need some time; maybe within 48 hours? User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 03:41, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
Yeah no rush, I just need an admin to do it since they're protected files. I didn't change anything, I just re-did the black border outlining the shield, and made the margins fit to the file, which took off 20-40 kb of file size. Fry1989 eh? 04:27, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
My work situation is just really nuts right now. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 07:23, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

Flag of Malaysia.svg

I get "This filename is currently protected from (re)uploading and can be used solely by administrators." Here is the new version:

File:National Flag of Malaysia.svg

. I checked it against Media:Construction sheet of Flag of Malaysia.svg. Achim1999 (talk) 22:19, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

Well. Only a last remark: Next time, please also copy the comment I added in its description -- the current comment that this is a copy of a deleted file is not really helpful. ;-) Achim1999 (talk) 09:10, 3 June 2012 (UTC)
I can still copy the description, but I will get it to it later. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 17:47, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

2 please-do

I noticed how quick and without any bureaucratic problems you have deleted the file "File:National Flag of Malaysia.svg". Could you please also delete the 3 or 4 oldest versions of [3] located in de-wikipedia? They were my very first self-created SVG-files and I ignored the correct coloring.

Moreover how can I move an existing file from de.wikipedia.org to commons.wikimedia.org? Achim1999 (talk) 09:19, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

First, I am not an administrator at the German Wikipedia, so I cannot delete the files. I only admin here, en.wikipedia and smaller Wikipediae. Second, you can use http://toolserver.org/~magnus/commonshelper.php to copy files from de.wp (or any other Wikipedia for that matter) to the Commons. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 17:49, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Zscout, I just came to find this image to use on a template and saw you had deleted it. I recall that it had been released, but I can't see the details now; I think you deleted it after an IP address said the group that released it wanted to revoke it. Would you mind restoring it if the release seems valid, or passing me the image and details so I can check further? Many thanks, SlimVirgin (talk) 01:31, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

I did the deletion based that the organization did not want to use the image anymore. Of course, people cannot revoke once a license is given. However, while I saw the username as AALAS, there wasn't a link or anything provided to say it was their image and anything in the terms of a release (all it said was "research rodent" as the description and the source and author was "AALAS". I tried to see if this image was indeed online elsewhere before us and so far, everything cites us for this image. If AALAS is still around, can you see about getting a permissions email so it can be sent to COM:OTRS? As for the image itself, http://www.as-found.net/wp-content/uploads/exhibitions/melanin/archived-exhibition/Rodent.gif User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 04:06, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

From what I understood from other administrators, you did something like this in the past and that was a part of the reason why I blocked you. I am not asking you to stop using Hindi (maybe with the exception of this talk page since I do not know a single word) and adding descriptions, but some of the descriptions were just not appropriate when put into English. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 05:39, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
The file description you cited had the text which read "नीचे से ऊपर या ऊपर से नीचे !" or ""From the bottom up or top-down!" in Hindi. I agree that this was distinct from the English description "It's new HTML5 tag, that defines time or date or both" but it is a reflective of the direction depicted in the picture. After all, in the past, Infrogmation suggested that "I suspect either an actual translation of the English text or some short explanation of the the location/context might be more useful captions." Can you please explain where have I erred here to warrant a block? Hindustanilanguage (talk) 07:57, 4 June 2012 (UTC).
It was not only that image, but other images related to bras that caused some concern and was pointed out to me by others. A lot of the comments was about the cleavages and things like that and it was not good. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 08:03, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

Merging updates

Hi, I see that you deleted File:National Flag of Malaysia.svg after merging it into File:Flag_of_Malaysia.svg, so an "exact duplicate" in terms of speedy deletion criteria. I suppose the process is fine if there is no objections (ie uncontroversial overwriting of File:Flag_of_Malaysia.svg). The only other thing is it would be good to have the new revision's author (in this case Achim1999) mentioned in the upload summary of the overwritten file (as part of the merging duplicates process). Just trying to keep everybody happy; what do you think? :-) --Tony Wills (talk) 08:28, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

I have run into major problems before when doing a histmerge on these files (I think so far 3 or 4 flags of this kind) and it is a bug in the software. I rather not deal with that ever again, but I agree Achim1999 should be mentioned. He did mention above he wanted the description from the deleted file to be added to the page, but I am just having the focus or time to make it happen. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 08:30, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, I missed that request above. Good luck with the history merging ;-). --Tony Wills (talk) 10:10, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

again: National Flag of Morocco

Hi Because several embassys officially used the interleaving star layout, as well as the plain layout is used officially, I struggeled more than a day to get a handy solution. But finally I succeeded in making a 4 parametric SVG-file for this flag! The only pity is, that SVG-version 1.1 is too powerless to define coordinate- and transformation variables :-(. Anyway, with this svg-file all other Morrocan flag variants can now be easily displayed:

green star with thin golden interleaving border

. Please have a look inside and tell me what you think. Achim1999 (talk) 13:32, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

I think your image is fine to keep as a variant since it shows another way the Morocco flag is done. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 17:23, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

how to see and change description of an uploaded file at commons?

Sorry for distrubing you again. Two simple questions:

1) How do I see the full/total description of an uploaded file at commons-wikimedia (not only the first part containing at most 256 chars)?

2) How can I change a description of such a file later?

Achim1999 (talk) 15:42, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

You have to check the history of the file description page. Just go to the file and press edit if you want to view the whole thing and also if you want to change it. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 18:17, 5 June 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, I don't understand what you mean exactly. Take the case of [4] . Which "edit" should I press there to get the whole comment of a certain version? Achim1999 (talk) 22:07, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

I want to see more than the first 256 characters (which is the default displayed maximum) of the comment of a version of a file (e.g. of the current http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_New_Zealand.svg)! And if possible, edit this comment. Achim1999 (talk) 22:38, 5 June 2012 (UTC)
It is not possible. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 00:21, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

Flag of Ethiopia

Hi I have no reference sheet of any construction details for the inner yellow symbols of this national flag. Do you have? Anyway, I tried to approximate those of the current on wiki-commons uploaded SVG-file. Looks suspicious to me, but make your own oppinion. I painted the white 5-star and the 3 black stripes for comparision. Two of them will be later blue and the perpenticular one yellow. Looks also as if there are rounding errors present. :-/

What do you think are the correct values for the scaling (138?) and for the 2 stroke-widths of the star?

File:Test Flag of Ethiopia.svg
simple approximation of Ethiopia's flag

BTW: You should delete this file if you doesn't need it anymore, I uploaded it only for you. Achim1999 (talk) 17:24, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

http://ethiopianlaw.weebly.com/uploads/5/5/7/6/5576668/proc_no._48-1996_flag_and_emblem_amendment.pdf shows no black lines on the yellow emblem and it looks about 80/85 percent of the diameter? I am trying to find the old legislation about the emblem to check on sizes and nothing. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 17:35, 6 June 2012 (UTC)
Why should it show black lines? The description needs to specify still 5 parameters (arm-width of the star, gap-width of the arm of the stars, width and length of the 5 single strips) to be unique, if we assume that the circumference-radius of the star exactly touchs two of the corners of each of the 5 single strips. Achim1999 (talk) 18:13, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

Flag of Niue

Do you have any reliable information regarding the size of the 5 stars in Niue's national flag? Achim1999 (talk) 18:27, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

Nope. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 19:59, 6 June 2012 (UTC)
I have cleaned it, only 1,3 kB size now. The diameter of all 4 smaller stars is 1/10 of flags height, so exactly the width of the St. Georg Cross of the Union Jack. Also I wonder about their position relative to the center. It is about a "guessed" half between edge and blue disc. :-/ But the center star and it's disc looks very good. Should I upload it as a new version of Niue's flag? Achim1999 (talk) 20:43, 6 June 2012 (UTC)
Go right ahead. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 20:46, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

(SVG)-file descrpition/quality on wikimedia-commons

By chance I clicked the "File:Flag_of_Marocco_(parametric version).svg". To my surprise there was additional information added (by you). I noticed this template "HandSVG" which I didn't know before. Then I added it also for "File:Flag_of_Nieu.svg" and "File:Flag_of_Kenya.svg". Moreover I added this section-heading "summary" and filled up the items "date" & "author"/"source" for "Flag_of_Nieu.svg". I also remembered that the "File:Flag of Israel.svg" had a good quality SVG-coding and wanted to add the template "HandSVG", too. A further surprise: It was already there, and moreover already a source-code listing of this SVG-file on its description-page in a special section "== Image source =="! (For which flags should this be the case?)

Before updating/completing more flags here on commons, a general question: What are the style guides for these SVG-files? To be concrete: Which date should be in the description file (of many versions exist)? I assume the original author (first version) or the one of the last completely new construction should be in the author-field, should it? What is "high quality" SVG-coding, in your humbled opinion?

All by me checked SVG-flag-files (I think about 120 currently, but I only reuploaded a small fraction of them to Wikimedia-commons) are hand edited and in a high quality SVG-code style. Moreover I reduced it artifially, because I got the impression you dislike to see precise construction info in it -- or even comments explaining what certain (many decimal long) numbers are mathematically? In contrast, I like this, because then it is like a construction sheet and one can easily check or change the layout for small mistakes. This is the main reason I edited all these original uploaded SVG-national-flag files from Wikimedia-commons for my purpose/database.

Many questions, but could you try to give my a correct feeling what is wanted on wikimedia-commons regarding this specific SVG-quality-topics? Achim1999 (talk) 11:01, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

First, I did not add the Hand-SVG note. There are other templates/notes about SVG files, such as if the code is valid or something like that (I don't add those either). As for descriptions and things like that, there is no hard and fast rule when it comes to who can add things. In the files themselves, we do not add the construction details in the SVG code because a lot of projects use these files and we want to make it easy for people to not only edit, but to also load it. Some of the flag images are used in thousands of pages. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 16:55, 7 June 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, someone, NOT ME, added this HandSVG then! Okay, someone already was interested then.
I firstly added today such things and SVG-valid icons must be added by others. If they are added by my uploaded flag-files, then either the system is buggy, reuse older SVG-valid icons ;-(, or an algorithm makes this automatically.
But the main question is still open: What are the effective wikimedia-politics here? "No hard and fast way" is no answer.
I uploaded "Flag_of_Belarus.svg" reducing its huge code heap into a readable coding which even is about a factor 6.6 smaller!
Now I want to make a good Nepal-flag. What is inside is a bunch of unreadable PATH-data. By chance I checked its discussion page and discovered that Pumbaa80 did in January 2007 a great job when layout this flag according to the official construction sheet.
Now I wonder why was this replaced by such a waste! :-(( IMHO I would judge such a conversion as vandalizm, because very useful information about the structure of the picture got lost. Thus I highly recommend to revert to the version of 2010-12-15-01-27-28. This has correct colors and still the code is structured and you know what happens! This should be a quality issue NOT to change this into meaningless raw path data. ALL of those more than 110 files I edited by hand, I introduced this title of the SVG-file and often a 90 char long DOCTYPE-line in its header. But nevertheless ALWAYS the file was smaller lastly! And so, you have an effective construction sheet inside the SVG! No question what the radius of other geometrics are. You simply can check when looking into the code whether this is a correct officially (or whatever) layout.
Loading times are a very minor problem in regard to this, because they depend on real time and real hardware, which is effectively time/age-dependent! :-(
Then better look at the file "File:Flag_of_Serbia.svg" it is awesome! Here you should think about loading time and replace it by "20101224081129!Flag_of_Serbia.svg" which is also too much in my opinion!
Seriously, I get really annoyed if this politics/behaviour will not be stopped officially. We need good structure in SVG-files if a certain fixed layout is defined, never convert this into a kind that this information is lost! Achim1999 (talk) 17:58, 7 June 2012 (UTC)
With Nepal, the flag image was made in a way where it had a big border on all of the edges and I was trying to reduce that as much as possible. With Belarus, there was a split in the rendering of the ornament and that was a problem in the past with that image. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 18:03, 7 June 2012 (UTC)
Then you had only to adjust one short path-statement to change the blue border size (this is the real advantage of having logical structured SVG-statements)!

<path d="M -18,-5 V 83 H 52 L 9,40 H 54 z" fill="#003893"/>

Not convert everything into path-garbage. :-( BTW: Adding comments for irrational number did not increase file loading time significantly, and file-conversion when displaying time absolutely not. I will rework this version and delete this (think?)-error. See the 4th reference in [5]. Achim1999 (talk) 19:15, 7 June 2012 (UTC)
Alright, let me take a look at it and see what can done. I also managed to fix the Belarusian flag image by cloning the ornament pattern, so it is now 7 KB instead of 12. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 19:25, 7 June 2012 (UTC)
You are way too fast in acting, first think! :) This looks like a rendering bug. I had it also, but only in the horizontal line of symmetry of the ornament (and thus these 5 "v*.6" values which should be "v*.5"). It can easily be corrected if you simply change all the "h*.5" (12 in total) values into "h*.6" of my hand-coded version. Then they overlap by 0.1 and when reflecting, scale(-1,1) later, occurs, the bug is gone with this work-around. So please, think twice if hunting for bugs and not generate thus data-garbage from good quality SVG-files. Achim1999 (talk) 19:45, 7 June 2012 (UTC)
Most of the time when I hand code SVG, I just take from other files and change it to what I need for the file. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 19:52, 7 June 2012 (UTC)
Better one knows what one makes. ;->>
So what is up? Do you correct my Belarus-Flag-version (or should I upload the "h*.6"-work around? I 'am currently working on a correct Nepal flag-layout -- regardless what you will do. Because it is not quiet trivial and I want to be sure that it is good and correct for my purpose. Achim1999 (talk) 20:02, 7 June 2012 (UTC)
I already uploaded my copy of the Belarus flag and as for Nepal, I am not going to work on that image so have at it. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 20:21, 7 June 2012 (UTC)
It would have been better if you corrected (better make this work-around) for this rendering-bug, because YOU have it, NOT me! And more, you would learn how to correct and work with a reasonable structured SVG-file, not replacing it by another 7kB monster. :-(
But okay, I will do it in THIS (hopefully last) CASE. If there is still this bug (or another rendering bug), then please think what is up AND how exactly this shows up. It can not be the sense to throw away a good, valid coding, only because somewhere, somehow has a bug which is due to his buggy SVG-viewer/SVG-renderer, IMHO. :-( Achim1999 (talk) 20:36, 7 June 2012 (UTC)
BTW: Take this as a threat: I will no more upload good structured SVG-files if these are replaced by ugly-data garbage without need, only because there are bugs in SVG-renderer and people are unwilling to correct this in the hig hquality code! In this sense, and because I am still waiting for an answer, I will change several flag-descriptions on wikimedia-commons such that they show the SVG-code and make some more quality improvements as long as I get not a "don't-do-this" from you or other authorities. Flag of Nepal

I have uploaded a corrected and hopefully correct version of this file:

Flag of Nepal

. Check it for render bugs or whatever you like. :) I updated the file-description and added the HandSVG-template. Next the SVG-validator checked it and discovered 4 errors. :-( Sorry, there are broken naming convention by the original author, he used identifier-names starting with a digit. I will try later to change/correct this. I will try to not make a now file-upload for these smaller svg-syntax errors, but try to use first time an external editor for an wikimedia-file. I hope I will succeed. ;) Achim1999 (talk) 10:21, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

File looks perfect! I know some people whine about the code validation, I don't. I just want to be sure the file displays correctly and it does. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 16:16, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
Good to hear - but in reality nothing is perfect. :-) But the other issue depends on the actual renderer which is used to display the SVG-code. A very strict renderer may deny rendering and displays an error-message. Achim1999 (talk) 17:07, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
Very true. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 17:46, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

No you may not revert on Iran and as for the protection, I'll work on it. But if you change the Kurdish stuff again, despite native speakers telling you no, you could find yourself blocked. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 18:54, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
I am not. ckb is a Kurdish language code and there is a w:ckb wikipedia. That discussion concerns conversion of ku -> kmr which has nothing to do with ku -> ckb. -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 18:58, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

Flag of the Philippines

Do you have a construction sheet for this flag? IMHO, the center yellow ray of a ray-bundle looks a bit too thick and the white gaps left and right a bit too small. (Talking of only 1 of these 45°-rotated 8 symmetric ray-bundles). Achim1999 (talk) 19:56, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

I do, http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v76/zscout370/flag_specs_1936_2.jpg and it is from http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/ph-hist2.html#23 User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 20:01, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
Yes, THIS image I also have discovered at FOTW. So, the exact interpretation of the ray-bundles is yours. ;) Moreover I noticed that the sun is NOT in the center of the white (equilateral) triangle! It is shifted a bit to the right, about 1/10 of the diameter of the yellow disc-sun -- I wondered really. Okay. Then I will correct all these unprecisions and doing my best guessing at this 1936-sheets. ;-) Achim1999 (talk) 20:26, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
I think regarding the x-position of the sun you made a typo. You used "140" but correct is "129.9038". Because the outer right top of the triangle you positioned nearly perfect at "3*129.9943333" (correct is (3*129.90381...). The 3 stars pointing to the 3 white corners are placed also correctly. Achim1999 (talk) 20:45, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
A further remark: you scaled the 3 small stars to have exactly radius 27.5, but correct should be 25 = 5/9*(sun-diameter). Maybe you was sleepy. ;) Achim1999 (talk) 21:12, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
I just discovered this interesting website [6] . There is stated that "The flag underwent minor alterations in 1997" and a slightly different sun-ray picture is shown. Achim1999 (talk) 22:19, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
I wonder what this correct gap angel is. I can not decipher it nor its 45°-complement angle due to too bad photo of the sheet. Do you know? I have made to different sun-ray bundles, one with 4°,8°,12° and one with 5°,10°,15° . BTW: These minor changes in September 1997 were only new color-definitions. Achim1999 (talk) 23:22, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
Flag of the Philippines (sun with 4 8 12-degree rays)
Flag of the Philippines (sun with 5 10 15-degree rays)

You may also test a 3,6,9-degree layout, as long as we can't decipher this angles. :-/ Achim1999 (talk) 23:33, 8 June 2012 (UTC) Take your time, I will go asleep.

I been at work, so I just seen this. I have some other letters from the Philippines Government to check about the construction, so give me time and I will work on it. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 02:39, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
Well. In principle I believe we must only decipher the 4 unknown quantities given on the old official construction sheet all regarding the rays. It even could be that there is a 'R' at the left most big ray indicating a certain length. This would indeed (very highly probable) indicate that this ray-sun is not centered in the white triangle.
To be more precise we must know the value (and meaning) of
  • This 'R'
  • above there is a bend arrow (pointing to this R?) and (probably) a number
  • this angle gamma
  • the nearby angle giving the total angle-width of a single ray-bundle.
These last two values should obviously sum up to a 1/8 of the full-angle Achim1999 (talk) 09:53, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
Good news! Executive Order No. 23, s. 1936 Achim1999 (talk) 10:11, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
I have analyzed the geometric description and have understood it. :)
0) the flag's ratio may variate between 1:2 and 1:
1) You were right by shifting the sun-disc a bit to the right (not exactly in the center, but at your coordinates)
2) the rays-angle in question must be 3.75°, 7.5°, 11.25°. Only then we have x=y=22.5 ° (this gamma I deciphered shall denote a y)
3) the lengths of a major ray is given as 5/9 D and this of minor ray as 4/9 D. But this means we have still one degree of freedom in construction of the ray bundles.
a) all the slops at the ray-end-tops are 45° angles relative to the flag sides.
b) the angels at the ray-ends are in such a manner, that the major and minor ray-tops lay on one line. And this line will surely not form an angle of 45°
4) these three 5-pointing stars are not regular 5-stars but a bit different as their ratio of inscribed radius to circumscribed radius is 2:5 .
Fine. Now I can construct a valid official flag layout, and will look whether I realize the a) or the b) interpretation for the slops. *LOL* Achim1999 (talk) 11:50, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
Here it is, decision for alternative a) was easy, b) sounds crude. :)
I will do some template-testing and then try to overwrite the true one on commons. Finally(!) we have hopefully the correct layout for the public. :)

Officially design of the Flag
. I hope the colors are also correct -- officially are pantone or same other unknown-to-me color-code given 1997, no RGB coding to my knowledge. Achim1999 (talk) 14:09, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
The Philippines Government officially uses Cable Colors, as stated in RA 8491. However, I have not been able to get any kind of official guide to see what they look like. I got Pantone equivalents, but as for how official they are, mostly used in some celebration guide from 2002 and recent legislation to change the flag still keeps it at Cable colors. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 14:20, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
"Cable Colors", yep this was the word I had read. "recent legislation to change the flag", what are you telling me? The parliament want to change this design? Any pointers whether they will really do it in the near future or is this only an aim (by some politicians)? Achim1999 (talk) 14:27, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
Cable Color is what is used also on the US flag officially, but getting a guide was a pain (and still is). As for that legislation, they wanted to change the rays from 8 to 9. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 14:29, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
"wanted" -- past form. ;) Okay, the job is done IMHO. Can you delete these other 3 test-philippine svg-files (used in this section on your talk page)? BTW: I think I like to see a further quality-SVG-template for valid & good structured SVG-codings. ;-) Achim1999 (talk) 14:55, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

I guess you neither have nor you know a precise description of its trident? IMHO it is a totally ridiculous dense number scan with lead to its data path in the SVG-code. ;-/ Achim1999 (talk) 17:41, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

Ratio of Flag of Botswana and of Equitorial Guinea

Hi A question: What is your reference for the ratio of the national flag of botswana? I have seen 2:3 as well as 5:8 in Wikipedia and other places. Thanks in advance. Achim1999 (talk) 13:47, 31 May 2012 (UTC)

Same question for The National Flag of Equitorial Guinea. Achim1999 (talk) 13:50, 31 May 2012 (UTC)

The 2x3 ratio was from the previous drawings, so I kept it. As for the stripes themselves, it is from https://www.fotw.info/flags/bw.html#law (I got the pdf on my computer, but isn't online for some reason now). User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 15:40, 31 May 2012 (UTC)
For Equatorial Guinea, http://flagspot.net/flags/gq.html#dex most likely and I don't have anything to add to it since I don't know. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 16:04, 31 May 2012 (UTC)
A pity in both cases. :-/ But thank you. Achim1999 (talk) 17:08, 31 May 2012 (UTC)
http://www.gov.bw/en/Ministries--Authorities/Ministries/Ministry-of-Finance-and-Development-Planning1/Tools--Services/Services--Forms/SALE-OF-BOTSWANA-NATIONAL-FLAG/ might provide a hint, but give me a list of construction sheets you need to look at or missing and I will see what I can find. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 18:51, 31 May 2012 (UTC)
Sorry? I neither want to buy a flag nor do I have any construction sheet. Or do you pulling my leg? ;) It looks highly probable that Botswana is 2:3, but Equatorial Guinea is a different story. And sounds much more difficult to solve due to political reasons.
BTW: What about the construction error (which contradicts the construction sheet) of the inner circle of the crescendt in the Malayan National flag in the wikimedia-SVG file? Should I upload my new made variante? Achim1999 (talk) 19:49, 31 May 2012 (UTC)
No, I am not asking to buy a flag. But I have a work emergency so I need to go. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 21:41, 31 May 2012 (UTC)
But what I was thinking for that website is we can ask what sizes the flags are and perhaps try and get other details. As for Malaysia, go ahead and upload yours. All I said is that the inner circle of the crescent is not specified on the construction sheet. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 03:08, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
Okay I will upload Malaysia soon. Regarding this goverment offer/service of botswana: there is given a contact phone number without international code. Thus I think they don't expect to be called from abroad. ;) Achim1999 (talk) 21:12, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

Flag of Botswana

I got an email back from the Botswana Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This is what they sent me:

  • Standard size for the Botswana flag is 120cm * 180cm....
  • table flag is 10cm * 15cm
  • desk flag is 20cm * 30cm

So the flag is confirmed 2:3. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 07:21, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

Alright. I forgot to thank you, which I hereby make up for. :) Achim1999 (talk) 22:07, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

structured SVG / quality control/saving

I'm now down to 60 to-be-checked national flags. See [7] for current state. As Philippines and Nepal Flags show, not only the remaining flags get more complicated, but I think we need in commons-wikimedia something to save/control quality of these SVG-files. Maybe I will open a new category and update the descibtion of flag-SVG-files. Also I will try to save some of the construction details I have used before they get lost and only numerical values are left in the SVG-files. What do you think? Achim1999 (talk) 19:52, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

Go right ahead. I know for some of the Coat of Arms, there are specific coat of arms images we have to use. I still have the emails from the President of Ecuador, who was working with me on getting specs described and passed out, about the coat of arms and gave me a PDF for me to use (and I did). User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 01:08, 10 June 2012 (UTC)
I know the flag of Ecuador best, because it renders far most slowest of all flags! More then 5-10 times slower than the next biggest (Serbia) and this is due to its coat of arms. :-( How many different colors are used in this flag?
BTW: I introduced "Category: Structured SVG" and "Template:HQSG" Achim1999 (talk) 21:27, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

There is no place that this logo is in black. What do you Sindhi? This is the red logo to read more. Sam esfid (talk) 06:10, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

Documents, legal decisions, and that very standard you cite. But as explained to you before, the emblem is red only on the flag. Your red version is at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Coat_of_arms_of_Iran_%28red%29.svg which is what you should have done. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 06:41, 10 June 2012 (UTC)
Plus I seen green, I seen black, I seen red, so generally we go with the first upload and what they went with. I know you are trying to get the Iranian symbols in a certain way, but the way you are doing it in is wrong. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 06:51, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

Please do not put the truth of his desire Since black is not mentioned in any place and where it is written that the color black logo Mvjvds the red flags that should be used. Sam esfid (talk) 09:54, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

I don't really have much of an opinion about this either way, but I would like to point out a rather obvious fact. http://www.isiri.org/portal/files/std/1.htm has the flag in full colour, so if they wanted to, they could have easily done the emblem on the document in colour too, but they've chosen to use it in black multiple times, and only red in the diagram of the flag. Doesn't give much support to the idea that it has to be red like the flag. Fry1989 eh? 21:23, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

ArthurWeasly

Your rationale for blocking him indef was ridiculous. He was not the reason why hundreds of images were delinked, a careless admin was. If you want to block him, then do it for a week, indef is way beyond whatever he has done. An uploader has the right to nominate his images for deletion, it's even a built in option. Admins can then judge if the images are to be deleted or not. FunkMonk (talk) 12:05, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

If he didn't change all of his images from CC-Free to CC-Unfree, the deletions would not have happened. I just thought he was revoking his images again (as he tried to do before earlier this year and also last year). However, I do not contest the unblock. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 17:12, 11 June 2012 (UTC)
It is up to admins to check such matters, otherwise these tasks could just as well be done by bots. And this time he only nominated images with clear inaccuracies for deletion, not accurate ones. In a way he was right, images have to be educational to be included here. Modern, inaccurate dinosaur images are pretty useless and misleading. Not that I'd delete them myself, though. 2 tiny edites/corrections wanted and a "variant link"

Could please change in two SVG-files, in the 3rd line the <svg statement? There is writen version="1.0", but this must be version="1.1". This is the only reason the SVG validation fails for both files. :-(

It happens for "File:Flag_of_New_Zealand.svg" and for "File:Flag_of_Malawi.svg" where I forgot to change this version to 1.1.

Because the page "File:flag_of_Honduras.svg" is protected, could you add the entry in the description for the field "Other_versions:

Derivative works of this file: "File:National_flag_of_Honduras.svg"

(the design with the 5 stars grouped together)? Achim1999 (talk) 21:20, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

As for the validation, I'll get it later (but honestly, it is not a big deal to me). As for that file, I am going to add the link and I will change it to where it will be only upload/move protected. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 01:52, 11 June 2012 (UTC)
Thank you. The first (to be only a small deal) I expected. It is a pity that one (still) can't change SVG-files (in general human-readable text with a semantical meaning) like other pages (article/categories/talk/template/... e.t.c) on wikimedia. Achim1999 (talk) 09:05, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

Flag of Abkhazia

Have you any reference/information other than it has 7 equal dividing strips and seven 5-pointed stars around a hand? :) Achim1999 (talk) 18:11, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

No. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 18:12, 11 June 2012 (UTC)
I have the impression that the stars are much too big, moreover I like to see the white had shifted a bit , so that is about in the center of the red rectangle. See [8]. I know a poor reference, but at least a realistic one from 2008. :-/ Achim1999 (talk) 18:40, 11 June 2012 (UTC)
If you want a good guide, I suggest http://www.abkhaziagov.org/ru/state/sovereignty/flag_b.jpg User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 18:48, 11 June 2012 (UTC)
*sick* Star sizes are about what I expected, but not only the hand-shape is different but also the circle-width of the 7 stars in [9] . :-/ Anyway, thanks. Achim1999 (talk) 19:01, 11 June 2012 (UTC)
I wonder whether the site is dead since 4. June 2011 (death of the former president Sergey V. Bagapsh). Nevertheless I learned how to draw inside <svg> on a Jpeg-image (probably also other graphic-formats):

<image width="70" height="35" x="-1" y="0" xlink:href="./flag_b.jpg" />

So I know that these 7 stars don't lie on a circle! :-( And not only the 2nd from the star at the top, which is visible distant form the imagined circle, is misplaced. :-( Achim1999 (talk) 20:39, 11 June 2012 (UTC)
If at all possible, try not to have jpegs inside the SVG files. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 20:45, 11 June 2012 (UTC)
*LOL* Don't be afraid. I will surely not. :)
1) I told you this explicitly, that you also know this trick
2) I put it inside to approximate the stars and hand-position by svg-code! o:-)
Achim1999 (talk) 21:03, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

The user has been uploading alot of raster coats of arms lately. That in itself isn't usually a problem, but he claims "own work" and I doubt that. Could you maybe look into it when you have time? Fry1989 eh? 19:24, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

A lot of them were modifications of the SVG files and putting gradients on them. They all seem OK to me, but there are some other uploads that are problematic. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 19:29, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

variants of Flag of Honduras / flag description template

I noticed that you add something to the description of [File:Flag of Honduras.svg] but it doesn't work! Red link. I discovered also this variant: [File:Honduras 1866.svg] with stars upside down. More can be viewed in [Category:Flags of Honduras].

Moreover I strongly suggest, that we use always the template "Information" {{Information}} with its attributes description, source, date, author (, and e.g. other_variants) for every flag-description here on wikimedia. For a quick paste & copy to use it, see e.g. [File:Flag of Turkey.svg] or other more used flags. :) Achim1999 (talk) 08:57, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

Some of the older flag uploads did not include the Information template above; if you go to http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets for your account, there is a tool called "Add {{Information}}" where you can add this template with the press of a button. As for the redlink, I will try and fix it later on tonight. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 16:33, 12 June 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the info. But typically I have a bid more to do then simply insert {{Information}}. You have to take the old description, separate it form the multi-language, multi-given "titles" and have to add values for the fields source (sometimes its content is part of the old description), author and maybe date if missing. BTW: When I upload a new svg-version, if the corresponding flag-page is missing a section header {{Int:filedesc}}, then I also insert this now. Achim1999 (talk) 18:03, 12 June 2012 (UTC)
I will add some of the new details, but most of the time, we got automated processes and other users who like to clean the information stuff up. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 18:04, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

I cite "... I will try and fix it later on tonight." It looks like you meant a different "tonight" than I expected. :->
Meanwhile I have thrown an eye to the source code of the description. I believe you must simply delete the colon in front of the word File there:
Variant file: File:National_flag_of_Honduras.svg
But I have not checked these 3 minor "1.0" -> "1.1" changes. ;) Achim1999 (talk) 18:29, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
What that colon does is when the image does get uploaded, it will appear inline, instead of displaying the image. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 18:39, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
Interesting, this I didn't know. Then I should check another flag where I added also variants, why (or why not?) this works there ... . Achim1999 (talk) 18:57, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
Okay, I looked up "Flag of Philippines.svg" where other_variantes is used. 1) There the "{{Summary}}"-template is used, but "Flag_of_Honduras.svg" does not use any template for its description! :-/
2) File:National_flag_of_Honduras.svg doesn't work, but File:National_Flag_of_Honduras.svg works. The Capital letter F for "flag" is needed. Achim1999 (talk) 19:11, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

Coat of Arms of Slovak Repbulik

Do you know any construction sheet or geometric details for

File:Coat of Slovakia.svg? Achim1999 (talk) 21:20, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

I do not know that for certain. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 02:26, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

File:US-TRICARE-Logo.svg

Harm is the least of my concerns, however I would ask why it should be there. It's not actually part of the logo and therefore absolutely irrelevant. It's the same with television logos, they may have a TM or a Registered mark on them in publications, but it's not actually part of the logo or used on-screen or on the channel website, so it shouldn't be part of the file either. Fry1989 eh? 03:16, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

I been in situations before, via OTRS and other places, where we had to keep the trademark thing in the image and there was no way around it. Having it in there is not going to be a harm to us, and really, even will serve as a defense. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 03:25, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

File:Flag_of_Iran.svg

  • I can't upload the File:Flag_of_Iran.svg, because it is write protected!
  • Can't one give a pointer for those pages BEFORE one get the error message of failed upload? Or let the user modify the filename if the original one is write-protected? It is nasty to start all over again.
  • I uploaded it now as File:Flag of Iran.svg
    National Flag of Iran
. If you move this to the current version of File:Flag_of_Iran.svg, please take care also to copy the description for the new version.
  • The flag description is not write-protected so I will update and add templates/categories after you have moved it.

Next I will construct the correct coat of arms of Iran. For a simple check, scale up the current coat of arms to say 900x900 size, put a circle of radius 450 around it, then there is a tiny gap to the left and right visible and there are two tops of the ensign up and down outside of the circle. Moreover all coordinates inside are only given to 1/2 absolutely. Furthermore the two largest crescents are not strictly bounded by circles. I guess the maximal relative error is between 0.2 % and 0.5 %. Thanks for your help. Achim1999 (talk) 11:34, 17 June 2012 (UTC)

The flag of Iran file was protected because someone just kept on uploading and messing up the file. I plan on unlocking it soon. My real life work is a complete mess, so I am not trying to ignore your last posts. I just been very, very busy. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 16:36, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
Yes, I noticed this triple reversion a short time ago because of colors in Iran-flag controversy.
Anyway, real life (work) should always take priority over this hobby here! :)
If you like I can also write to another flag-enthusiast and not press you again and again. ;) Achim1999 (talk) 17:23, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
With some of these files, you will need my help anyways due to protection issues. Also with some of the flags, people come to me because I seem to be the only people who have the construction sheets. If you want, I can suggest for you to speak to User:Fry1989. I will deal with the Iran file, but give me 48 hours please. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 17:34, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
Okay, granted. Finally you have already corrected this link to the National Flag of Honduras. :) Perhaps you could point User:Fry1989 to this older request to change one character in the 3rd line of the source to get valid-SVG code, namely
<svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" ... version="1.0" ...

into
<svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" ... version="1.1" ...

for each of the 3 files File:Flag_of_Tuvalu.svg, File:Flag_of_New_Zealand.svg and File:Flag_of_Malawi.svg. Or should I ask him?
But you are totally right, I don't know another competent person to ask for construction sheets. Achim1999 (talk) 18:02, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
I can still look for sheets, but I am not able to respond quickly and if you have to remind me again, it is no big deal. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 18:06, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
Late and bad news. By chance I discovered on my local computer a rendering bug of this Flag. There stays a 1 pixel thick green line separating the green from the white and a 1 pixel thick red line separating the white from the red strip. :-( This is due to the fact that the Firefox-SVG-renderer doesn't use BCD-arithmetic, but binary floating point calculations and make a rounding error when scaling with 1.4. Currently the only solution which springs to my mind is to multiply all coordinate-values in the whole file by 10 (or 5) to get ride of this non-integer scaling. :-( Achim1999 (talk) 22:45, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
When trying to correct this rendering bug by scaling up to integers I got further insides. It is NOT due to this scaling(1.4) same problems when scaling(14). It depends on the final scaling from the viewBox to the given total weight and total height of the picture. Look at the preview sizes you are presented at fixed ratios:
* 800 × 457 pixels: rendering bug (1 pixel remainder)
* 320 × 183 pixels: too small to decide / recognize (0 pixel remainder)
* 640 × 366 pixels: OKAY (0 pixel remainder)
* 1024 × 585 pixels: OKAY (0 pixel remainder)
* 1,575 × 900 pixels: OKAY (original stored size, 0 pixel remainder)
* 1568 x 896 pixels: rendering bug (my private ratio, 2 pixel remainder)
* png to 200px: too small to decide / recognize (2 pixel remainder)
* png to 500px: rendering bug (2 pixel remainder)
* png to 1000px: rendering bug (1 pixel remainder)
* png to 2000px: OKAY (2 pixel remainder)
I can only avoid this by ABSOLUTELY shift the "Alkar-Allah" into the white strip. But the problem is this ABSOLUTELY, because the total image is scalable by the user, thus each absolute shift I give inside will be relatively for the final size. I.e. if I could define that the middle white strip is always 1 or 2 pixels thicker than the green and the red strip, I had the perfect solution. Notice: this bug doesn't occur, if the total height of the flag is divisible by 3. :-/
Therefore this is an permanent problem. I would have to ask for the finally size and then compute the necessary absolute values -- which of course is impossible in SVG. The only workaround is too choose such a large miss-shift of the "Alkar-Allah" into the middle white strip, that the render bug doesn't occur for small images, but this necessary at-least-miss-shift I can only get experimentally by trying every thinkable size. Same workaround for absolute thickness of the white-strip relative to the green and red strip. :-( Achim1999 (talk) 09:46, 18 June 2012 (UTC)
I think it is impossible to solve this scaling/digitizing problem in SVG without a contradiction to a given flag design. Look at this test-flag
Add caption here
, its blue/red/green stripes should have equal thickness of 1/3 flag's height and the white and black rectangles should be placed exactly at the virtual halve below and above. If the final image should have a height which is odd, there will be a rendering bug at the red/black/white corner, if the final height is not divisible by 3 there can be a rendering bug at the blue/black/red corner or/and at the green/red/white corner. This can only avoided if this flag is NOT symmetrically defined in SVG coding. :-( Achim1999 (talk) 10:15, 18 June 2012 (UTC)
What I can suggest, especially for complex flags, is to make it fit to what a standard size is (and that would be something you can determine on your own) and if the flag works in that size, then go with it. For the icon size, some flags will be impossible to make it look right (mostly because of rendering issues that is beyond both of our control). User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 17:03, 18 June 2012 (UTC)
What you might see / recognize at my 10 size-examples, it is not a question of design complexity! It is a question of symmetry and whether the flags width or/and height is divisible by 2, 3 or another small number due to its defined symmetry! The rendering bugs occurs in the Iran-Flag if the height is not divisible by 3, but it should be equaly parted into 3 strips of the same width. Thus then these 3 can't be exact equal! And so we can get this 1-pixel-align problem which is due to this "Alkar-Allah"-pattern at the edge good visible for the human eye. SVG has no possibility to say when coordinates may be round-up or round-down for the final (absolute) rendering!
Good flag sizes are sizes, where the height and the weight is divisible by many small numbers! E.g. multiples of 60 or 420 or .... . But there is no standard-size for SVG-images, because the final size which is environment-dependent decides about the rendering into a discrete pixel-mapping. Coat of Arm of Iran

Same question: Have you a construction sheet or any geometric details for the File:Coat of arms of Iran.svg?

If you like to point me to [10] this is worthless for me because I can't read arabic. Achim1999 (talk) 16:49, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
Besides what you you linked me to, and to that standard, all of the construction details in English will be at http://flagspot.net/flags/ir%27.html. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 18:05, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
Somehow I thought I had already looked at www.fotw.us but obviously, I have not. :-/ Sorry, to have ask you due to my unattention. Achim1999 (talk) 18:45, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
Oh no, you are fine. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 19:07, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
Can we trust this English translation of http://www.isiri.org/portal/files/std/1.htm]? At the very beginning is a picture indicating the flags ratio to be 441:(3*84) = 7:4
  • overall flag size should be always 7:4, well
  • there are 6+(10*20+19)=225 squares (I repeat, squares!)
  • the flag's height is divided into 3 equal parts.
  • (9. in the translation of the construction) "This height above the edge of the white stripe is divided into 7 equal parts."
  • continuing this sentence: "....) thus defining a side of a square to form a mesh of 7×19 squares" I wonder which square's side he is talking about? Thus a mesh of 7x19 is defined some paragraphs above. But 7*7*2 = 98! And we have only 84=7*6*2! A contradiction! So either we divide a strip (green or red) only into 6 equal parts, or the mesh is only 6x19 or these squares are not squares, but 6x7 rectangles, or something other is wrong! :-(
I like to continue that the stripe is divided in 6 equal parts -- this matched somehow with hie reference picture http://flagspot.net/images/i/ir%27fig10.gif . This picture is also rather unprecise. :-( It is 1548:886 = 1.74717832957 NOT 1.75. 1548:885 = 1.749152 NEARLY (error about 0,05%) 1.75 and 885 is divisible by 3. Then a strip is 295 high, but this is neither divisible by 6 nor 7. *sick* His 7x19 mesh is 49 or 50 pixel high. Thus I must assume this (red or green) strip is divided into 6 equal parts, not 7! Then we would get 294 pixel height or 49.166 pixel height of the 7x19 mesh. So the flag should have been 49x6x3 = 882 pixels high and 1543.5 pixel wide (if we allow non-integer pixels).
But 225 squares would give a width of 225*7 = 1575 pixel! The wikimedia-svg file is 1540:880 pixels, a ratio of 7:4 but I get a contradiction as you have seen due to the 225 squares in the width in the ratios on the height! There must be something wrong in the height of the flag or squares are not squares. Thus I like to see a new, independent translation of these official Arabian construction sheets.
My best guess is: If we have 1575:900 =(7*225):(4*225) = (7*225):(4*(3*85)) , then we need here 84 (for divisibility of 6 or 7) not 85. So either 7:4 is not an exact ratio, or this 1/7 is only about and it is 1/7*(84/85)*(49/48) in reality or these squares are rectangles of 85:84. :-/ I think some officials did not really know that this flag-design does not lead to a 7:4 flag ration. :-( Achim1999 (talk) 22:44, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
BTW: In point 10 of the construction on http://flagspot.net/flags/ir%27.html there is a typo: "10. The inscription is then repeated 5 times to the left and to the right, making so the mesh of 7×249 ...." this prodcut 7x249 must be read as 7x219. Achim1999 (talk)
I make my mind up
* 7:4 is the total flag ratio by definition
* there are 225=(6+11*(19+1)-1) squares defining the flag's width
* the flags height is divided in 3 equal strips
* the "Allahu Akbar"-mesh is 7 squares high (height until the white strip) and 19 wide
Conclusions: assume the total size is (225*7):(225*4) pixel, then one strip is (85*4) pixel high. Moreover because the "Allahu Akbar" must be 7*7 pixel high, this is 49/340 of a strip's height = 1/6.9387... ~ 1/7 (1% error). Achim1999 (talk) 00:04, 16 June 2012 (UTC)
You did not give any comment to my report. ;) Well after sleeping a night, I still can stay to my decision. I even can make my reasoning clearer to others :
* 7:4 should be the total flag ratio by definition (regardless of other design conditions!!)
* the width of the flag is dived up into 225 squares
* the flag is divided up into 3 equal thick parts (conclusion: each must be 225/3*(4/7) squares high)
* a basic "Allahu Akbar"-mesh/pattern consists of 19x7 squares
conclusion: because there should be 11 "Allahu Akbar" patterns separated by 1 square in horizontal direction and on both side of this pattern-sequence 3 further squares to fill the total flag's width, we get 11*19+10+2*3=225 with matches exactly our second demand
because the "Allahu Akbar"-mesh/pattern is 7 squares high it takes 7 of 225/3*(4/7) or 7 of 900/21 or 7 of 300/7 or 300/49 or a 49/300-th about 1/6-th of its height.
225 = 3*85 = 3*(84+1) = 3*(7*12+1), and 4*12+1 = 48+1 = 49. Therefore 7/4 = 84/48 becomes a reasonable approximation to 85/49 which would have been the true flag-ration of the design. Achim1999 (talk) 10:10, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

Before I download the file with the correct Coat_of_Arms_of Iran in black, here for comparison the outline of the old (in black) and the new (in red) and the circumscribing circle in blue
You can delete this file on commons-wikimedia
. Achim1999 (talk) 20:23, 18 June 2012 (UTC)
Because you didn't unprotect the File:Coat_of_arms_of_Iran.svg yesterday, I have uploaded
File:Coat of arms of the Republic Iran.svg
correct(?) version
here such that you (or another admin) can move it to the correct place. Achim1999 (talk) 09:34, 19 June 2012 (UTC)
May I ask, why suddenly people spring in action, as soon as I uploaded the Coat_of_arms_of_Iran.svg -- people who are else too busy at work? What rendering bug has occured and why did it not show up for the copy I uploaded for you here days ago? I noticed that you replaced several of the exact arc-circles by some kind of quadratic-interpolation and deleted the description and the title inside. Moreover, reasons like "minor edit" (from Freys1989) and uploading a 4 KB file from this doesn't sound funny nor did it explain anything. I regret that I put such an effort into it to get the precise shape if people quickly most falsify the design. :-( Achim1999 (talk) 22:38, 20 June 2012 (UTC)

Should I ask User:Fry1989 with the outstanding 4 problems -- you seems really unwilling

I like to cite "I can still look for sheets, but I am not able to respond quickly and if you have to remind me again, it is no big deal." But it is annoying discovering each day, that the out-standing small deals are not done. (3 SVG-edits and 1 new file-version move). In contrast to remember you again and again, I think it is more successful to solve these issues by asking other admins to do this and future request, doesn't it? :-/ Achim1999 (talk) 17:06, 20 June 2012 (UTC)

Fry is not an admin, but he can still do page moves. Unless the page is protected, any other user is able to do things. I know Iran is something we need to spend more time since other users are getting involved (but it would be easier if you did something similar to the Iranian image as you did with the Belarusian flag). It is not the fact that I am not willing; I am just very busy right now and have bigger issues to deal with (my work, schooling). User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 17:10, 20 June 2012 (UTC)
I called Fry1989, because you pointed me to him.
Things are different for Iran and Belarus. Belarus there was a mirror symmetry in the pattern, which one can simply overlap a bit. But for Iran you have an aliasing-problem which occurs always if the flag's height is not divisible by 3 and which can become easily visible because the Takbīr is exactly at the edge of the middle white strip. I explained this in detail already to you.
Moreover, if you have time to glance over this ugly Iranian reproduction of their colored national flag in the mentioned PDF, to point me that this may be a correct alternative flag-design, then I wonder what your time-preferences are. ;-)
The 3 minor SVG-bugs are still there and the "File:Coat_of_Arms_of_Iran.svg" ist still write-protected. Achim1999 (talk) 18:29, 20 June 2012 (UTC)
Arms image unprotected; as for the flag rendering, I did see your post and I will try and see if I can get a hold of that other user. I also have an Iranian flag sent to me by the embassy, but I believe it is American made. I have to look at the Takbir. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 18:34, 20 June 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, when I wrote my previous reply, I checked Coat of Arms of Iran. And then it was write-protected, as well as the 3 minor errors still exist. To not bother you once again, I did already a request for this officially at the wikimedia-administration board since then. :-(
I wonder that suddenly a real made flag should be more definitive than an offcially written construction sheet, or what do you like to extract for information of this "whatever-by-whom" made embassy flag? I like to remember you on the Morrocian case and your general politics regarding "real flags" from embassies or government institutions (which I agree). Achim1999 (talk) 18:57, 20 June 2012 (UTC)
As I said, the Iranian flag is American made, so other than just a quick look, I am not going to take stock in that (since we got an official sheet). As for the image, "(show/hide) 13:32, 20 June 2012 Zscout370 (talk | contribs | block) changed protection level for File:Coat of arms of Iran.svg‎ ‎[move=sysop] (indefinite) (so the image can be replaced) (hist | change)" so it is only move protected. You can write and upload. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 19:02, 20 June 2012 (UTC)
I did already explained what happened on the admin-board. I know, and I have now uploaded it finally and updated its description. You may reactivate you write-protection if you like.
I dislike to guess what you associate / mean with "American made, so other than just a quick look," I think it doesn't matter.
I think I will finish the work on URL http://0xc.de/flags/iran today. Have a look if you have time and are still interested in the exact construction of the flag and its consequences (independent of rendering problems due to vector-graphic-language weakness *lol* ).
I was 5 days heavily involved to understand this design and made an exact SVG-coding (and documentation). :-/ Achim1999 (talk) 19:28, 20 June 2012 (UTC)
With the official sheets from Iran, it shows the bottom part of the Takbir (and the top one) bleeds into the white parts and I agree it is a rendering issues. As I said, the flag I have is American made, so I do not take much stock in that flag. But I do appreciate you looking into this issue. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 19:31, 20 June 2012 (UTC)
"With the official sheets from Iran" WHICH EXACTLY?
"it shows the bottom part of the Takbir (and the top one) bleeds into the white parts", I really don't know what you exactly want to express with the wording "bleeds into". :-/
Sorry, but maybe I need not understand this. Achim1999 (talk) 19:36, 20 June 2012 (UTC)
The PDF file that I pasted on your talk page is what I meant by the official sheets (the ISRI 1 document). As for the Takbir bleeding into the white; according to the document, the Takbir has a white line (on the bottom in the green stripe; top in the red stripe). This white line is supposed to be at the very top (in the red) and at the bottom (of the green) and there is a gap that leaves squares. What I am trying to suggest is for this white line, if you could expand the width of this line so where it would go into part of the middle white stripe (or bleed). @Sam: Why exactly do you call this flag a bug? Maybe the observer is the bug? ;-)
Not to insult you, but exactly this happened yesterday, that the user was the bug because he wanted a nice image with exactly this Flag_of_Iran.svg rendered to a 50x29 size! Achim1999 (talk) 17:20, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
@Zscout370: Sorry to remaind you : Do I get an informative answer to my question "May I ask, why ..." last reply in the section "Coat of Arm of Iran" on this talk-page? Achim1999 (talk) 17:20, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
I didn't see that section, so my apologies there. As soon as you uploaded the file, it was reverted by another user (Fry1989) and I was thinking "Not again..." since I know you take offense to someone who uploads a "messily coded" SVG file. Knowing this, and how others have reverted you before on the Iranian images, I took your file and see what I have to do to not only keep your light code, but also to satisfy other users (it is a hard balance, really). So, all I had to do was make two points in the SVG file before I went to work and made sure the image looked the same. It did, then people talked about margins (which honestly don't matter, but people do care about this stuff). I am trying to strike a balance between many users and, so far, I think I am doing ok. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 17:25, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
May I ask for an objective explanation? Or can any user ask for specific image for official defined flags? I don't think so. I wonder why you didn't tell me the real problem users had. :-( Achim1999 (talk) 17:33, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
I can only make guesses to what users are thinking. There has been times I used official flag drawings and it was reverted because it wasn't the original image someone did, the specs make the flag look dirty (especially if the white is a dark shade). But really, it is more of a consensus thing so if users believe the official image is not good, then they will enforce it. However, these are more of the bigger countries (like Canada, Switzerland, Australia, Poland, US, Italy, Russia among others). User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 17:37, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
Why do we need offical specs/sheets if you do what users want? Tell me the next voting for this flag, or is it more a question of lobbysmus? :-(
I don't think this is the way quality and objectivity can be saved here on wikimedia. :-( To be specific: Why did you replace two paths (one for the sword and the other for the small crecent by interpolating curve-approximations, which are obviously not the offical outline? Achim1999 (talk) 18:08, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
A main difference of SVG to png,jpeg,gif-images is, that the later are already rendered images, but the SVG not! It will be rendered if a size is chosen for display. And the user is responsable to choose a size which can be rendered better or worse. And if you don't know what is good, take multiples of different small numbers for the flag height and width.
1 minute has not 59 or 61 seconds, but 60! If you know why, you already have understand much. :-) 1,2,6,12,60,420,840,2520, .... is the magic sequence if you don't know anything about the to-be-rendered design. Achim1999 (talk) 17:35, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
I think the main problem is, people don't know what they do and what thus happens. As I pointed out, SVG is a non rendered image, which will only rendered if displayed! Thus one can try other renderers for the wanted size. Take the example of the current flag of Iran. The code I uploaded , in the default size rendered perfectly (as far as I can see) on my monitor. I knew, why I chose this size of 1575x900. But look at the default renderer wiki-admins(?) took for those images of sizes 320 × 183 pixels | 640 × 366 pixels | 1,024 × 585 pixels and png in 200px, 500px, 1000px, 2000px. I don't know why they choose such crude absolute sizes. :-( If you really want a 200 pixel image or a 800 × 457 (like the one which is display on the page File:Flag_of_Iran.svg, take a better renderer.
A simple trick: render the original SVG-graphic in its given size. For the given size it's owner/author is responseble that this works well. Then convert this image to a png/gif/jpeg or format what you want. And then scale it down to your wanted size. Thus the png/gif/jpeg-render will do the job, not the SVG-renderer! The jpeg (and probably the png-renderer) use color-mixture for anti-aliasing what the SVG default render doesn't do. So you get often much nicer images finally. Achim1999 (talk) 18:08, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
I have just corrected the Coat of arms of Iran, such these halves overlap a bit when mirroring and no visible splitting should occur (this you also could have done :). I wonder why you choose the scaling not to be 225, but 200? And why do you want to have a viewBox which has an empty frame of thickness 15 around the Coat of arms (viewBox="-215 -215 430 430", not viewBox="-200 -200 400 400"). Another useful choice would be to have the bounding-box as viewBox. Maybe I should choose this with the next upload? All this stuff should be discussed on the flag's talk-page, but people prefer to do what they think before asking others. :-( Achim1999 (talk)

buggy svg-to-png conversion on wikimedia :-(

See Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/Blocks and protections#Need urgent help Achim1999 (talk)

I found a work-around. Meanwhile I experimented to get rid of this 1-pixel line at the Allaho-Alkmar Tekbir. See thumb|Add caption here . Even a 1.5/14 ( > 10% of a square!) shift of the Tekbir into the white middle strip doesn't work always when rendering to png on wikimedia. :-( Achim1999 (talk) 21:35, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
I give up. There are more and more artefacts showing up. The senseful solution for this flag is: use multiples of 3 for its height. And in general try for all flags the height and the width to be multiples of say 12, or better 60. See my sequence of magic numbers. The problem lies how wikimedia converts SVG to png graphics of different size as the given. It is a self-made principle problem, IMHO. :-/ You need better programmers / designers.
Call me a competent graphic developer here and we can solve this issue. Achim1999 (talk) 22:32, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
the Tekbir-strips consist of 225 squares. Moreover this flag shall have a ratio 7:4 ==> 1575:900 is the smallest integer ratio. Luckily the height is also divisible by 3. This is the reason I had chosen from the start this ratio for my SVG-construction. No renderer problems should occur for this size (and any integer-multiple). This file was already released NOT by me but by the copyright holder himself through his website using the cc-by-sa license. Even though the file has a copyright notation on it, CCWiki's instructions says to leave the copyright notation intact. Not sure if you understand this part. Here the quote from CCWiki: "If the work itself contains any copyright notices placed there by the copyright holder, you must leave those notices intact, or reproduce them in a way that is reasonable to the medium in which you are re-publishing the work." '(http://wiki.creativecommons.org/Marking/Users). Therefore this file ought to be undeleted. The uploader already had a valid license through cc-by-sa released by the copyright holder himself! 173.55.4.63 03:33, 23 June 2012 (UTC)

No. The source website says "Unless otherwise stated, all works are CC..." and, with that image, there is a CLEAR copyright notice for that image, making the CC license invalid. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 03:35, 23 June 2012 (UTC)
Not sure if you read my posts. Nothing was stated otherwise on that website, such as a specific clear marking indicating that the image is "not to be licensed" which is required when noting which contents are to be exempt from CC licensing, per CCWiki's instructions. (http://wiki.creativecommons.org/Marking/Creators/Marking_third_party_content). Having a clear copyright notice on the image is ok and doesn't invalidate CC license, because CC itself says to leave those notices intact (see link above). The image therefore has proper license. 173.55.4.63 03:56, 23 June 2012 (UTC)
Then are you Vero Vysosias? User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 03:57, 23 June 2012 (UTC)
I'm just any re-user of WMF who is exercising its rights under this CC License who has not previously violated the terms of the CC-BY-SA License with respect to the Work (this image).(Section 1i). The file in question was released by the owner from his website in a proper manner. It was uploaded by some other user to WMF using the correct CC license. It was then deleted inappropriately by someone else not knowing the legal code of CC-BY-SA nor CC's instruction to leave the copyright notation intact on the image. Emailing COM:OTRS, in this case only, is inappropriate because the CC license is valid. 173.55.4.63 04:10, 23 June 2012 (UTC)
No. It says at http://www.circball.com/Home the following: "Unless otherwise noted, content on this website is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License." On the image you uploaded, it has a notice "(C) 2010 [Vero] Vysosias. All Rights Reserved." at the bottom of the image. That is a clear notice of copyright and we cannot take the CC license because that image is not CC, though the site is. You do not understand copyright and how CC works. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 04:17, 23 June 2012 (UTC)
First, someone else uploaded the image, not me. I'm quoting you a CC instructions directly from their website which specifically states that any content with a clear copyright notice can be licensed under CC with the COPYRIGHT NOTICE TO BE KEPT INTACT. Which part of that instruction is not clear to you? 173.55.4.63 04:29, 23 June 2012 (UTC)
It is clear, but you don't get it. A website cannot CC something that doesn't belong to them. The website has to prove it is either owned or created by Vero Vysosias, through email to OTRS, and then we will go from there. This going to my talk page and others to get this image restored will not work and I suggest you should focus on emailing the website, then sending their reply to us. File:Coat of Arms of Slovenia.svg

Have you any specifications for the File:Coat of Arms of Slovenia.svg ?

I found a few detailed infos from the designer Marko Pogačnik in the WWW. Thus I think I should be able to make a more precise one and also be able to reproduce its national flag preciser -- not the other way round. :-) Achim1999 (talk) 09:17, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

http://www.vlada.si/si/o_sloveniji/politicni_sistem/drzavni_simboli/ and it already has EPS files to download. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 15:40, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for pointing me to this link. I have downloaded the flag-EPS-code "zastava.ps" and viewed it. It is only a "heap of interpolating Bézier curves" (after the EPS-prolog stuff) with a few paint and line commands -- like you prefer to use if drawing with inkscape ;-) -- thus neither a help nor a way to define its precise geometric shape / design. :-/
BTW: Eps would be an alternative for SVG. I wonder why wikimedia doesn't allow this, in contrast to allow PDF-code uploaded for graphics. Achim1999 (talk) 16:15, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
There is also a link to my web-resource: [11] which is much more of a help. Achim1999 (talk) 16:20, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
Probably because EPS is not a free format. I am also checking http://www.uradni-list.si/1/content?id=70456 to see what are the exact numbers and so far nothing. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 16:23, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. I don't want to press you to search for me -- especially you have busy work waiting for you ;) -- I only wanted to be sure you have or haven't useful construction / design information. BTW: PDF is a free-format??? Achim1999 (talk) 16:45, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
Earlier this week just wasn't the best since I was dealing with a lot. I can still look for sheets, but I just ask for maybe giving me a longer time to respond than usual. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 16:53, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
No problem. In the case you did not noticed: I created the page File talk:Flag of Iran.svg. I hope you agree in principle with my statements of "color-politics" and my hints for rendering problematic SVG-graphics. You had much trouble with these issues on your own talk page it seems probable that this also results in blocking the Flag-page (or the "File:Coat of Arms of Iran.svg"-page ). Achim1999 (talk) 16:55, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
The color politics I agree on. If there is another thing that I can tell you is that consistency of what color scheme we use is also. Some flags use RGB, some use Pantone, some use a mixture of both, some CIE and there is no one key "standard." Some of it is due to government regulations, others because of some publication. People still complain about that, though most of these issues were hashed out in 2007 and 2008. As for the SVG bugs, I will try and talk to the people a user told you about and see what is going on. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 17:02, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
I have goten the impression it is a bug in the used rendering-libary from SVG (on wikimedia). I was pointed to [12] but because you also need a login to check for known bugs I stopped there.
I think the renderer has a design-flaw. It should render in the from the SVG-file (viewBox) given part into the weight x height rectangle given in the SVG firstly. And then scale this rendered image to the external given/wanted pixel size. If you are clever you can do this in one step, but it is tricky. But I think they (the developers) effectively scale the SVG first to the external wanted/given sizes as SVG, and then rendered it to a pixel-image. Thus the observed flaws. This one may could do also without quality loss, but then you need a better renderer (then the current SVG-renderer) which especially is able to average with correct weights all pixels! These are my thoughts, not more. A librsvg-developer should decide what can be done. Perhaps we are lucky and this bug/design flaw is already known and corrected and we only need to install the newest librsvg on wikimedia. ;) Achim1999 (talk) 14:03, 23 June 2012 (UTC)
The link [13] I tried to use for exact reproduction is too bad drawn. :-( See
File:Badly constrcted Coat of Arms of Slovenia.svg

. I don't believe they changed the official constrcution sheet to the worse. :-( So I will use this [14] from 27. October 1994.
The sheet [15] from 27. October 1994 looks like a good, consistent construction plan. :) The only problem I have: your construction as well as all other images I noticed in the WWW show the upper most wave below the hills not wrapped up to the left most (and right most) corner of the three hill (exactly around the bottom of the three upper circles). This is a very obvious difference. It looks like that the waves are shifted a bit down to avoid this (but which is specified by the construction sheet I use). What should I do (realize) in your opinion for the flag (and of course Coat of arms)? Achim1999 (talk) 17:33, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
https://www.fotw.info/flags/si%27.html might provide some assistance to what can be done with the coat of arms, but what you got doing is a very good start. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 17:36, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
"Very good start"? *LOL* I hope it is a precise picture of what is done in "Gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije #67, 27 October 1994". But I still miss your answer for my "wave"-problem. Is it unclear formulated by me? Do you like to see two pictures for comparison? Achim1999 (talk) 19:37, 24 June 2012 (UTC)
Here is the outline:
File:CofASlowenia.svg

. I'm still waiting for your answer regarding the wave-front. Either this, or the green waves, which you get if scaling a bit down the red waves and shifting them up such that the most upper wave touches the bottom of the green circles. Achim1999 (talk) 00:14, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

What license is depreciated? User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 03:20, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
Hallo Zscout370, I think it was triggered by the text PD-URAA (which is still in a not very useful way in the permission field). {{PD-URAA}} is in fact deprecated. Not sure why just the text triggered the bot's action. I have recently added it to the bot's trigger list. I will continue monitor that. But I think it is okay - since the text should be removed. I guess the bot did just not correctly detect that there are other, not deprecated licenses in additon.
Yes, the file is probably okay with its copyright templates. --Saibo (Δ) 13:12, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

Wow, I'm really astonished, that you have construction sheets of all these "most difficult" Coat of Arms of "Serbia, Ecuador, Mexico, ...." !
I myself, would have done Slovakia, Argentina and Kirgisistan, maybe Kosovo, too, because its territory-boundary should be easily goten exactly. Hmm .... then perhaps I should start with this (currently) ridiculous huge SVG-flag of Serbia. If you like you can email its official construction sheet (or whatever is sufficient for precise construction) to achim@0xc.de. Thanks, Achim1999 (talk) 11:15, 1 July 2012 (UTC)

Coat of Arms of Slovakia , I found this! :-)

Have a look at [17] and there you can download the official flag as SVG! WOW Achim1999 (talk) 21:10, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

I think I done this before with that flag, but I had to change the colors a bit. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 16:35, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
The referenz you cited is unaccesible. Moreover I was able to reduce the code to less than 3 kB.
The colors are nearly identical, except the blue. To be specific: #ed1c24 and #254aa5. Currently the flag uses #ee1c25" and #0b4ea2, so oly the red-componmet of blue is significant differnt 0b-hexa versus 25-hexa the others komponent are only 1% different.
Beside the usual rounding-errors of Inkscape-code (WHY?), flag side-ratio was 1.49348..., but should be 1.5 :-(, I wonder about the distance of the coat of arm from the left flag side (hoist). It is writen officially to be the same as from top and bottom. But: bottom is the peak and top a parallel line. But an the left is this curvature-line of the shield. The flag SVG-designer decided to consider the distance from the left upper coat corner of the shield but on the other hand, I noticed on http://flagspot.net/images/s/sk%27.gif the point of maximal shield-width taken for distance to the left flag-margin. So this seems not to be unique interpretable. :-/
Should I use the current (#0b4ea2) blue? I just wonder whether this is visable by human eyes compared to #254aa5. Achim1999 (talk) 18:11, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

Hello Zscout370

I need you help. I have constructed the Kyrgyzstan flag exactly according to the construction sheet [18]. According to this construction the 40 yellow rays touching the red 54-circle. But there are many pictures, even the first on this page, which show an additional yellow ring. :-/ Moreover, even this official stamp of the 10-year celebration of Kyrgyzstan independence shows a different symbol. :-( What should I do?
