Hello, Utcursch!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Filemove error[edit]

Hi Utcursch. There was an error in moving File:Etobicoke Creek Trail bridge at Centennial Park.JPG. I've asked Rillke to take a look at it. INeverCry 02:30, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Copywriters[edit]

Why did you add Category:Copywriters to Category:Bob Newhart? Do you understand what a "copywriter" is? In English, a "copywriter" is someone who writes text for advertisements or commercials. Beyond My Ken (talk) 08:11, 24 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File:Birha Ki Raat (1950) - Hindi film poster.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Picture of the Year 2013 R1 Announcement[edit]

There is doubt that not all files are owned by him. In ticket:2014081610008761(Korean) he said there is some photo he does not own - he just said "Copyright owner (photographer) gave me the copyright". (해당 사진들은 지방소방공무원이 촬영한 사진으로 촬영자 혹은 양수인이 제게 저작권을 양도하였습다.). This should be OTRS received until that things are clarified. Revicomplaint? 08:07, 21 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You[edit]

Thank you so much for the edit. The point is Akhund Mulla Shah's Mosque is situated in Jammu and Kashmir not in West Bengal. But you add this in Category:Cultural heritage monuments in West Bengal. So I am removing it.--Indrajit Das 05:05, 3 October 2016 (UTC)

@Indrajitdas: I get that. But why did you undid all my edits to the Kalna temple images? All those images are part of Category:Kalna Temple Complex, which is a part of the categories Category:Hindu temples in West Bengal and Category:Kalna. Categorizing all the individual images in both these parent categories is against the Wikimedia Commons guidelines. Have a look at Commons:Categories#Over-categorization. Utcursch (talk) 11:55, 3 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Utcursch: Thank you so much. You are right from your technical point of view but Kalna has temples of different faiths like Vaishnav, Shoibo not only Hindu. My second point is, all those temples are not only part of the Kalna complex but some are outside of the complex but in Kalna. I hope you will consider my point of view. --Indrajit Das 16:52, 3 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Indrajitdas: OK, thanks for the explanation. Great pics, by the way. Utcursch (talk) 23:54, 3 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Utcursch: Thank you so much for the help and also I am thankful to you to understand my point of view. Hope to keep in touch with you in future.--Indrajit Das 03:51, 4 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Historical maps of South Asia[edit]

Hi Utcursch,

You may have been looking for this map: File:South Asia historical AD625 EN.svg. I created a series of maps from the 3rd to 7th century (all in the same cat). I may add more later. The western boundaries of the Kushana empire were a problem. Cheers, Woudloper (talk) 15:16, 14 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Woudloper: Thanks! Several other India-related maps on Commons wildly exaggerate the borders of the kingdoms. But I find your maps to be very accurate. The design (colors, fonts etc.) is great too! Utcursch (talk) 15:26, 14 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Your VFC installation method is deprecated[edit]

Hello Utcursch, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. A detailed explanation can be found here. Important: To prevent problems please remove the old VFC installation code from your common.js and instead enable the VFC gadget in your preferences. Thanks! --VFC devs (q) 16:23, 22 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top 2 from each sub-category.

India maps[edit]

I'm sorry, but I'm coming with a request. These is a lot of India maps files in Commons that are no longer up to date. In 2019, the state of Jammu and Kashmir was divided into two federal territories (Ladakh; Jammu and Kashmir). Many maps do not yet reflect this fact. I have no experience with map editing, so I am writing to you who made the last change in the India-locator-map-blank.svg file. Please, if you have experience, time and enthusiasm, could you update the files in the folders Category:Blank maps of India, Category:SVG locator maps of states in India (location map scheme) and many more? It's a lot of work. I can't force you to do this, it's up to you. Thanks. --Unpocoloco (talk) 18:56, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Unpocoloco: Sorry, I'm not an expert on maps -- consider dropping a note at Commons:Graphic Lab/Map workshop. Utcursch (talk) 19:15, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I put my request there. Thanks. --Unpocoloco (talk) 09:26, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Can you provide me the base map used in 1 Regards.

@Utcursch I am again asking you that if you could provide me the base map which you used in 1 as the source there provided by you does not fill the actual depiction.

Rawn3012 (talk) 12:59, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Rawn3012: The map provided in the source is the base map -- some layers (such as the ones depicting modern boundaries) have been removed, that's all. Also, the base map file has been updated several times since 2017. Utcursch (talk) 14:54, 22 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
