Misunderstanding with Leveque artists

Hello TommyG,

Auguste Levêque (born March 1, 1866 in Nijvel, died February 22, 1921 in Sint-Joost-ten-Node was a Belgian painter, poet and art theorist. He is different with the French sculptor Louis-Auguste Lévêque (born 1814, died 1875). I introduced the additional name Louis to avoid confusing both artists. This is a very important change. --Szczebrzeszynski (talk) 15:12, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

How to prove, that this french sculpture is NOT a work of the Dutch/Belgian PAINTER Auguste Leveque?--Szczebrzeszynski (talk) 18:19, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

@Szczebrzeszynski: - Hi, yeah, I see your point. However, the reason you chose for moving the pictures was invalid. You're probably better off going with Reason #2: To change from a meaningless or ambiguous name to a name that describes what the image particularly displays. And, also include a short explanation that these are indeed two different artists. TommyG (talk) 09:13, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

@TommyG: Many thanks. But please help me. I have no idea how to act in the current situation, if it were possible to return to the initial situation it would be much simpler.--Szczebrzeszynski (talk) 09:49, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

Why did you decline the rename request? It qualifies for criterion 4, as it should be harmonized with Category:SVG flags of municipalities in California. pandakekok9 08:10, 27 June 2020 (UTC)

I wasn't able to find that it was part of any set which qualifies for criterion 4:
Just because images share a category does not mean that they are part of a set. There are two scenarios that this criterion is designed for. First, certain complex templates (such as those that use BSicons or that display football kits) assume that the images used in them will follow a specific naming convention. Wikisource also uses a specific naming convention for the source files they transcribe. Second, files that form parts of a whole (such as scans from the same book or large images that are divided into smaller portions due to Commons’ upload size restriction) should follow the same naming convention so that they appear together, in order, in categories and lists.
and I still don't really see it. I'll leave it up to someone else to make a second judgement though. TommyG (talk) 07:16, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

Welcome, Dear Patroller!

Counter Vandalism Unit

Hi TommyG,

You now have the Patroller right and may call yourself a patroller! Please take a moment to read the updated Commons:Patrol to learn how Patrolling works and how we use it to fight vandalism.

As you know already, the patrolling functionality is enabled for all edits, not just for new-page creations. This enables us to keep track of, for example, edits made by anonymous users here on Commons.

We could use your help at the Counter Vandalism Unit. For example by patrolling an Anonymous-edits checklist and checking a day-part.

If you have any questions please leave a message on the CVU talkpage or ask for help on IRC in #wikimedia-commons.

Thanks. I will have a look through those links and hopefully be able to make a useful contribution :-) TommyG (talk) 19:30, 18 July 2020 (UTC)

Selfies

Hi. Thanks for nominating selfies for DR. You probably know this already but you can also tag them for speedy deletion under criteria F10. Thanks for your help Gbawden (talk) 10:10, 28 July 2020 (UTC)

I didn't so thanks for letting me know. TommyG (talk) 15:29, 28 July 2020 (UTC)

Re: File:Ev2.jpg

I've reverted it to the original image and left a message for the uploader (Filip Em), asking what it is. I've also created a completely new copy of the Viala image, from its original source, which is now credited. If Filip Em doesn't reply or can't remember, would it be proper to simply nominate it for deletion? WQUlrich (talk) 06:01, 4 August 2020 (UTC)

Thanks. The description for the original file was actually in the edit history of the page. I've reverted to the original version by Filip Em, which describes what's in the image. TommyG (talk) 06:31, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
Ah, I didn't think of that! Thank you. WQUlrich (talk) 06:39, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
Echinococcus vogeli (Ev), how strange. There's an EV1, so Musaraigne must have been trying to create an EV2 and ran into a bit of a problem! WQUlrich (talk) 06:42, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, this was 12-13 years ago, so who knows what the upload interface was like back then :-) TommyG (talk) 07:04, 4 August 2020 (UTC)

Please pay attention to the criteria for suppressing redirects

I notice that recently you renamed File:Hazlebadge Hall - geograph.org.uk - 1709390.jpg without leaving a redirect. I've created the redirect that you suppressed because I can't see how it could come within any of the criteria for suppressing redirects on COM:FR. Specifically:

  • The file was uploaded nine years ago, which is outside of any reasonable definition of "recent"
  • It would obviously be inappropriate to swap any file to the incorrectly spelled name
  • Incorrectly spelling a name doesn't generally constitute vandalism

In addition, the file was in use on Hazlebadge Hall (Q17546100), so suppressing the redirect went against COM:FR's explicit statement that Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. Most of the files that you rename are recently-uploaded and unused, but please remember to check before suppressing the generation of redirects. In particular, you may want to review the following:

And that's just from the last few days. --bjh21 (talk) 10:52, 5 August 2020 (UTC)

It's not actually possible to suppress a redirect on a file which is in use on any project. The file you mentioned was not actually in use, and the file you redirected to was not the same file that was moved. But, apart from that, I see I've probably been to liberal with suppressing redirects so I'll keep that in mind for the future. TommyG (talk) 11:09, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
I'm sorry, yes. I apparently got the two files horribly confused. Thanks for fixing up the redirect! Also thank you for explaining why I sometimes see the checkbox for suppressing redirects disabled: I'd been wondering why I sometimes saw that, but since I almost never suppress redirects I hadn't worried much about it. --bjh21 (talk) 11:44, 5 August 2020 (UTC)

sorry about that

Sorry about this, I didn't realize that that was the name of the boat. Regards, --Prahlad (talk to me / what I've done) 21:52, 25 August 2020 (UTC)

@Prahlad balaji: No worries, no harm done. TommyG (talk) 07:59, 27 August 2020 (UTC)
I see you've declined my requets a couple of times. Any suggestions for better renaming? Prahlad (talk to me / what I've done) 18:30, 27 August 2020 (UTC)
Do you have any examples of rename requests of yours I have rejected? TommyG (talk) 19:35, 27 August 2020 (UTC)
Like for example File:Mm-quiz-funnel-v1.jpg and the example that this whole thread was initially about. Prahlad (talk to me / what I've done) 21:52, 27 August 2020 (UTC)
The file Mm-quiz-funnel-v1.jpg is tagged with a copyright violation notice and should per COM:FRNOT not be renamed. As for the file File:MS_FOREVER_-_Flickr_-_Lutz_Blohm.jpg, there was no reason to rename it as it already had a perfectly fine name. You can have a look at COM:FNC under "Additional information #2" for a more thorough explanation of what files should and shouldn't be renamed. TommyG (talk) 22:32, 27 August 2020 (UTC)

Mass deletion nominations

Have you considered using VisualFileChange for that? 𝟙𝟤𝟯𝟺𝐪𝑤𝒆𝓇𝟷𝟮𝟥𝟜𝓺𝔴𝕖𝖗𝟰 (𝗍𝗮𝘭𝙠) 08:18, 5 September 2020 (UTC)

Thanks, that looks really useful. It's parts of commons I haven't involved myself with much previously, so I'm not very familiar with all the tools available. But, thanks for the tip. I'll certainly have a closer look at this one. TommyG (talk) 08:52, 5 September 2020 (UTC)

Thanks, no problem. Although, now I'm hungry and it's still a couple hours left till lunchtime ;-) TommyG (talk) 07:29, 14 September 2020 (UTC)

Thank you for suggesting Filemover rights!

Thank you so very much. I never would have thought of it myself. It is so much easier than making all those requests. Krok6kola (talk) 00:24, 16 September 2020 (UTC)

Flytting av stortingsrepresentanter

Hei.

TommyG (talk) 10:24, 18 September 2020 (UTC)
Takk. --GAD (talk) 11:18, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

Your assistance, please

Hi Tommy! How are you doing? I'd like to ask whether this file of mine is suitable for Wikipedia. Thank you for your kind assistance! Prahlad (talk to me / what I've done) 23:40, 14 October 2020 (UTC)

Sure, that looks like a perfectly fine image. Personally I think I would've gone for a slightly tighter crop, to eliminate the white wall in the background, but that is just my personal opinion. TommyG (talk) 05:29, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for your kind help! I will keep this in mind next time I upload an image here. Cheers, Prahlad (talk to me / what I've done) 18:06, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
@Prahlad balaji: Fwiw, you can use croptool on images uploaded to Commons for lossless crops, f.ex Oleander_flowers_1.jpg. Can be found in the Tools menu on the right side on a File page after you have activated it from Gadgets in preferences. TommyG (talk) 06:13, 16 October 2020 (UTC)
I've tried the gadget; it's very nice! Thank tou for the suggestion! Prahlad (talk to me / what I've done) 18:09, 16 October 2020 (UTC)

File:Kids crying with Easter Bunny.png

I believe this image is not a copyright violation because no original owner of the image is not found and the photo looks to be very old, at least 60-75 years old so it could be of the public domain either way. This image may also be under the Copyright 0 license due to it be probaly a domestic picture not taken by a company. I'm going to have to some more research to find the originial source of the photograph. I'm also going to use this image on wikipedia for a new article that I am creating. SomeBodyAnyBody05 (talk) 21:26, 18 December 2020 (UTC)

There is of course a chance it's old enough to be public domain, but that is far from a certainty. F.ex if the photographer is one of the parents of there children, there's a good chance the person who took this photograph is still alive. And, even if the photographer is not longer alive, he could have died fairly recently, meaning it'll be another 100 years before this image becomes PD. The burden of proof is on our side when uploading files to Wikimedia Commons and it's up to the uploader to show why a file is available under the license they specify. TommyG (talk) 21:39, 18 December 2020 (UTC)

I guess you could be perhaps right, but the source of the image is very unknown and after doing some digging I cannot find where this image may have came from becasue it is featured on multiple blogs and on social media. We'll have to find the author of the photograph. I'm going to reupload this image onto Wikipedia for the prevention of a possible copyright violation. But for a sidenote if the image was taken before 1923, it will be within the public domain unless by a chance the Unknown photographer is alive. SomeBodyAnyBody05 (talk) 21:46, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
