First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}

Oil price graph[edit]

Yes, they're yearly averages, so I will wait until the end of the year. I don't think it's necessary for the 150-year-history graph to be up-to-the-minute. However, I just created Image:Brent Spot monthly.svg, which has monthly averages from May 1987 to April 2008. I will try to keep it up-to-date, but I have to wait for the latest CPI data, so I won't be able to provide May 2008 data until mid-late June. It takes them some time to compile it. Dear Tom, it would be nice if you could update the "Brent spot monthly" graph again, now that the record-chasing seems to be over. Also, you might consider using the January-to-August average price as a preliminary entry for 2008 in Oil_Prices_1861_2007.svg. Sorry for the late response, but I updated the Brent spot graph last week. I'd prefer not to add preliminary entries to the long-term graph; I'll probably wait 'til the end of the year to do that one. It's supposed to show long-term trends, so I don't think there is a need to display trends of the past few quarters. I may do another graph at some point; this one is tempting me. Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Units on graph[edit]

Thanks for the oil prices graph! I'm pretty sure that the prices are per barrel of oil, but could you please make that explicit on the axis label or legend?

Heck, I'll second this request. According to a different Wikipedia page, a "barrel" in this case is 42 US gallons. A graph without units ain't that useful!

A helping hand with File:Brent Spot monthly.svg?[edit]

Hi Tom. I'm pretty familiar with hand-coding SVG, and I've had a look at the source of the graph, with a view to updating it. The daunting part is in calculating the 'real' dollars.

  1. I assume that each time the graph is updated it is necessary to re-calculate all the 'real' figures from the start?
  2. I found the calculator at http://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm Is this what you used? It would need typing in every figure and copying out the result, and doesn't give quite the same result as you have for the first few (is that because it's now using figures for the whole of 2009, not just up to April?)
  3. Is there a better list of indices somewhere on the bls.gov page that you link to, that could be pasted into the eia.gov spreadsheet and would give the new figures more automatically?

As I say, I would be happy to help, but don't want to spend hours creating new numbers only to find either I did them all slightly wrong, or that there was a much quicker way. Reply here, I'll watch this page for a while. --Nigelj (talk) 13:39, 6 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
