First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Why does nobody notify me about the deletion request of this photo? I'm the original uploader.

Also, FYI, these can be deleted as well, according to the reason:

File:Bahrain_WTC_day.JPG has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

I reactivated this category and reverted your image moves from this category. There is a big difference between the Hespertalbahn itself and images taken during a ride with the Hespertalbahn as shown in this category you shouldn't ignore! -- Ies (talk) 20:53, 15 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, there is a difference, but the category still doesn't fit into the established schemes. A similar category "Ride with ..." does not exist on Commons for any other railway, road or vehicle. Images are primarily categorized by what they show. Sometimes they are also categorized by the locatiopn or objekt from which they were taken. In the latter case the category is usually named "View from ..." (see Category:Views by viewpoint and Category:Views from vehicles). Hence, if the category is reactivated, it should be renamed Category:Views from the Hespertalbahn, and it should only contain images not showing the Hespertalbahn itself (which belong directly into Category: Hespertalbahn or Category: Rolling stock of Hespertalbahn) but only the surrounding landscape, especially the Baldeneysee and the Hardenbergufer. --Tetris L (talk) 09:04, 17 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Let's continue the discussion at Category talk:Ride with the Hespertalbahn#Move. --Tetris L (talk) 09:12, 17 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Graphs, charts, schemas and diagrams[edit]

Hi! I noticed that you removed Category:Energy statistics from Category:Energy schemas and diagrams (and subcategories accordingly), stating that "Charts and graphs are not schemas or diagrams". I see where you're coming from, but I have to say that (unfortunatly) the definition of these terms is not quite as clear as you (and me too) would like them to be. If you read the relevant articles in Wikipedia (which should be the main reference, not some Google search), you see that the terms are pretty wide, collective terms, often used like synonyms. The term diagram includes various charts, graphs, schemas, plans, technical drawings and even maps. Consequently, the terms are largely mixed up all over Wikipedia and Commons. To make life easier, I put schemas and diagrams together in one category in the energy tree, because there is no clear difference anyway. Maybe I should have named the category Category:Energy schemas, diagrams, charts, graphs, plans and all the rest. --Tetris L (talk) 19:51, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to include statistics under schemas and diagrams, I believe that is incorrect. But I don't want to spend a lot of time arguing about it.
Just please do not remove obvious statistical charts and graphs from statistics categories. Many people will not look for statistical charts, graphs, and tables in schemas and diagrams categories.
So statistics categories need to also be direct subcategories of their topics. For example; Category:Energy statistics should be directly under Category:Energy. If you also want to put Category:Energy statistics under Category:Energy schemas and diagrams that is OK by me if you insist. But leave Category:Energy statistics directly under Category:Energy too. --Timeshifter (talk) 18:34, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't remove any content from any statistical category. Quite the opposite, I added a lot to them during my recent clean-ups.
Well, I believe that it's not expected too much from somebody who is looking for a statistical diagram (charts and graphs are diagrams) to understand that he will find it in the diagram category. Off course everybody wants his favorite object or topic as high up in the category tree as possible. But I feel that this clutters the main categories. In a flat category that is packed it is much harder to find something than in one that is well structured with subcategories in multiple levels. It's a matter of taste. --Tetris L (talk) 18:48, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Mass broken edits[edit]

You've just moved a lot of files from Category:North Sea to undefined:Coasts of the North Sea (example). Please repair the damage done and fix your scripts before continuing. BR, tsca (talk) 09:08, 16 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Must have been a temporary hick-up of Cat-a-lot, which is not my script but an official Gadget. I'm not a script coder, just a plain user, so I wouldn't mess with the script to fix or break it. However, everything seems to be okay again now. Did you fix all of those errors? If yes, thank you! --Tetris L (talk) 21:33, 16 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You removed categories about renewable energy on this file, without comments, have you got a reason for that ? This skycrapper use wind turbines and solar panel to be energy positive. 82.225.234.108 14:30, 19 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The file was already in multiple sub-categories of Category:Renewable energy: Category:Renewable energy in China and Category:Solar energy in China and Category:Solar architecture. Please read Commons:Categories#Over-categorization, it explains why I removed the category. Actually, I should have removed even more. --Tetris L (talk) 21:34, 19 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 startet in Kürze[edit]

Hallo Tetris L,
