Renaming Wikisource books

I have declined your rename requests: they don't comply with renaming guidelines. They are all bn.wikisource books, rename can spoil indexes and pages in main: you should start a discussion on bn. Wikisource and vote it. Such serious renames should be discussed. Wieralee (talk) 09:21, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

@Wieralee: Yes, they are for bn.wikisource.org. I am a volunteer there. We rename these files on commons and then use on bn.wikisource to transcribe. This is the practice we have following since the beginning. I am just following the steps that bn.wikisource community agreed to. • Tarunno, I'm a wikisource admin -- and I know how it works. I'm only trying to avoid unnecessary problems. There is a second problem -- you're not an original uploader. It is always easier to rename when this is an original uploader's request, especially when somebody wants to change the language. Generally Commons is multilingual -- and we are trying to avoid such renamings.

The real problem is that rename is not a safe procedure -- some files disappear after it forever. That is why we are trying to avoid renames if it is not really necessary.

Well, in this case I am actually sharing the workload with the original uploader @Jayantanth: and the procedure I am following is instructed by the uploader himself. He even uploaded a video instruction on CC about this c:File:How_to_rename_a_Book_and_Upload_as_Index_file_to_Bengali_Wikisource.ogg which I am following. Bn Wikisource runs on very limited volunteer resources. If we cannot share the workload, there will be a bottleneck on work chain, it will be impossible to move forward with several thousands of books that is on the pipeline. - Tarunno (talk) 10:43, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

Sorry mate, thanks for you help. I appreciate it. May be I overexplained a little. I have been explaining my angles to several people on several places since yesterday as I don't have enough edits on commons which made me look like a possible vandal suspect. :P

While the renaming may not be malicious, it's likely to be disputed especially when it involves hundreds of files. I suggest you ask at COM:VP. Wikicology (talk) 21:39, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

•  Comment @Tarunno: Either the renaming is OK with bn.wikisource or it's not. If they've approved of the planned renames, I say take care of business and get them done. Our VP would have to take time looking into something you already know about. We were having some errors a while back with moves and deletions, but I haven't seen any in at least a couple weeks, and I do thousands of deletions each week, along with filemoving. I've even done some history cleans of widely used files with no issues. I would suggest you move ahead with your plan carefully and if you run into any problems, stop and let me or another admin know. INeverCry 07:14, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

You and others have collectively uploaded 7,115 photos so far, all of which are viewable at Category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in Bangladesh.

We encourage you to continue contributing through the rest of the month. Uploading your photos of monuments isn't the only way to contribute, however. If you're interested, there are auxiliary ways to contribute - which include improving Wikipedia's coverage of historic and cultural sites of Bangladesh, as well as finding existing free photos that can be shared on the Commons. While these contributions don't count towards the contest, we are still keeping track of them and they are great ways to contribute to the spirit of the project. If you are interesting in contributing to Wikipedia, Wikipedia tutorial is also great place to start.

• Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
• Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
• Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

• To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
• To perform file name swaps.
• When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning.
