Just so you know, I replied at Image talk:LocationIndia.png. Dbenbenn 03:46, 28 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

User talk:SPUI#Deletions ([1])
I agree about the bandwidth concern, but you don't need separate pages for that. For example, anywhere you'd use the link
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Boston_1871_H._F._Walling_&_Orm_Gray_25%
you could link directly to the 25% thumbnail instead, with
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/de/Boston_1871_H._F._Walling_&_Orm_Gray.jpg/2138px-Boston_1871_H._F._Walling_&_Orm_Gray.jpg
Do you agree? dbenbenn | talk 00:22, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
Does the software keep those around indefinitely? It seems they'd be deleted if they're not embedded on any pages. --SPUI 18:53, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
Yes, thumbnails are kept forever. I guess the extra disk space is cheaper than the processing power it would take to identify unused thumbnails.dbenbenn | talk 19:00, 12 July 2005 (UTC)

Category talk:Redundant
... Anyway, the categorization system is how we organize images, not the title. dbenbenn | talk 21:55, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hi! I'd like to see some consensus for having only one image per flag. Is there somewhere? Not in my knowledge. Now it seems to me that you just like to have one image/file and refusing idea that there can be different verions of same "object".

Our earlier talks about this have been died out (see Image talk:Germany flag 300.png, Image talk:LocationIndia.png as well your talk page) If you strongly opinioned to have only one file per "object" then please start voting etc. instead of overwriting other's work. It's not personal about this Hawaii flag, it's just I want see general agreement behind your activity, as oppose your approach, there are good reasons to have different size for using different purposes. Regards, --TarmoK 07:34, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've replied at Image talk:384px-Hawaii state flag.png. You're right that general agreement is important; if this issue is being discussed anywhere, please let me know. Commons:Village pump#Disallow images that start with 600px- was somewhat relevant; 3 people expressed agreement with my opinion, and no one disagreed. dbenbenn | talk 16:10, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Could you explain why you marked this Image:Germany flag 300.png redundant? and saying that Image:Flag of Germany.svg would be better? Latter one (1) has different yellow,

Original version on which I based my opinion of redundancy has same yellow. I doubt that new version colors is better but this is subject for other discussion. I agree that on this ground redundancy is incorrect now. --EugeneZelenko 14:50, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

(2) is actually PNG and (3) in general there should be aside of SVG files also PNG files, not every user has skills/possibilities to convert SVG to PNG or other image type.

Why does user need to care about that? It is just necessary to use SVG version in same way as PNG. SVG to PNG conversion is made automatically in software. --EugeneZelenko 14:50, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Even the main purpose of Commons is to serve WikiMedia projects, the idea of Commons is to be free source of images for all purposes, which means that user can use it in schoolwork, making web page or newspaper etc. so it will be good to keep this kind of versions also if there is no other reasons (incorrect info (color, size etc), infringement of copyright) to remove them. --TarmoK 15:06, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
But this is not mean that Commons should host same image in all possible formats. I think most suited one should be kept. In case of simple flags SVG is much better then PNG. --EugeneZelenko 04:40, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Also there are other points for keeping namely Image:Germany flag 300.png file, see image discussion page. .. so long I'll shall move this marking to image discussion page. --TarmoK 14:36, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Why do you think that images are free? As for my communication (Belarusian Wikipedia) with geraldika.ru (same as Vector-Images.com) they allowed fair use only. See ru:Изображение:Grodno city gerb.gif from same source: non-commercial, non-political uses only. --EugeneZelenko 14:56, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think, I asked permission from them and got approval of using raster images from their web site as long there is marking of the source. And I also specifically confirmed that this includes also commercial use. ... I do agree that it's a bit my laziness that I haven't "uploaded" here the answer from them as the licence to use. I try to do it soon. --TarmoK 15:12, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
It's look like they gave different answers to different people on different moment of time. I think they must update Terms of Use for bitmap images. Otherwise it hard to tell that images free for anybody for any use (including modifications/commercial use and so on) with only credits given. --EugeneZelenko 04:44, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Please participate in Commons:Village pump#Template PD-RU-exempt and geraldika. --EugeneZelenko 14:23, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
