Wiki Loves Africa 2020

Dear Summering2018 In the past, you contributed to the Wiki Loves Africa competition. This February, you have another opportunity to create beautiful photographs on the theme of "transportation" that could change how the world understands people and culture in your part of Africa. As with previous years, there are also many exciting cash prizes. Wiki Loves Africa is an annual public contest where people across Africa can contribute media (photographs, video and audio) about their environment to Wikimedia Commons for use on Wikipedia and other project websites of the Wikimedia Foundation. Images from the competition have helped millions learn more about Africa and see Africa more clearly from an African perspective. Overall, nearly 5000 people like you have contributed to this photo contest, and contributed 18,000 images about Africa. When does it take place? The 2020 competition will start on the 15th of February 2020 and close on 31st March 2020. What should we contribute? Pictures ! audios ! videos ! The theme for the 2020 contest is... Africa on the Move ! This theme encompasses a host of approaches and is intentionally open to interpretation. It encourages the submission of visual representations of movement or transportation, whether by path, road, sea air, by self-propelled, animal or mechanical means, or the historical or contemporary structures that have been created to facilitate movement or the transportation of people, goods, or animals. In addition to the value your photos contribute to understanding and African visibility, there are several prizes on offer. The international prizes are: 1st prize: US$1000 2nd prize: US$800 3rd prize: US$500 Additional categories are: Culturally specific or traditional representations of transport or structures that facilitate transportation : US$500 Prize for best quality video: $500 Each winner will also receive a pack of goodies (proposed: a hat "I edit Wikipedia from Africa", a branded battery, stickers). renaming

Hi @Anthere, sorry for my late reply, but I saw your message here today. The uploader requested after your renamig another renaming of the file to File:some.jpg This didn't seem fruitful to me, so I renamed the file to File:Romani Woman in Egypt.jpg. Which is explicit again. The user then uploaded other versions of other motifs which I reverted. That's not allowed.

Sorry, if I confused something but I don't see the problem. Could you and @Summering2018 help me? I'm sure we find a solution. Best regards Emha (talk) 09:59, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

Hello Emha. From what I have been able to understand, Summer took this portrait of that woman. It seems the portrait is creating problem with this woman family because of the association to Romani, which is creating some unstir. But this is only my understanding and perhaps Summer can explain better ? And yes, I agree File:some.jpg is not a proper file name.... Anthere (talk) 16:01, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

This photo was taken of a woman I know who is not a Roma and since the Roma in Egypt do not have a good reputation, putting the woman's picture on articles about Roma would cause me a problem if this woman or one of her relatives saw her photo. A delegation asked Esla to delete this photo, but she told me It is not possible, and when I changed the picture, it angered you. Hi Summering2018, I sent you yesterday an email with some serious concerns about some of the WLE 2022 in Egypt finalists that the jury in Egypt has chosen. Furthermore I found out that the images aren't unpublished but have been available on the Internet for a while and for sale, as you can see here. That means that 1) the images should be deleted because are copies of copyrighted images on the Internet 2) they don't fulfill the criteria of WLE, which says that the images are all new. Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

Greetings from the Wiki Loves Folklore International Team! Wiki Loves Folklore is an international photography contest hosted on Wikimedia Commons to document folklore and intangible cultural heritage from around the world, such as folk festivals, folk dances, folk music, folk activities, folk games, folk cuisine, folk wear, folktales, folk games, folk religion, mythology, and many more.

The campaign invites participants to document photographs, videos, and audios linked to folk culture and fit within the contest's theme. Through this campaign, you may become a part of a community dedicated to preserving our intangible culture, which has been brought and passed down for thousands of years.

How can I Contribute?

The dates for the submission in the photography contest on Wikimedia Commons are from 1 February 2024 through 31 March 2024. Probably you are wondering how you can take part. It’s simple: grab a camera, record an image, video or audio under the folklore theme and start uploading or Click on Upload Now Icon which is available on right side of Wiki Loves Folklore 2024. Here are the exciting prizes which you can win internationally.

International Prizes

• 1st prize: 400 USD
• 2nd prize: 300 USD
• 3rd prize: 100 USD
• Top 10 consolation prizes: 40 USD (each)
• Best Video prize and best Audio prize: 50 USD (each)
• Top uploader prize for images: First Prize: 300 USD, Second prize: 150 USD
• Wiki Loves Folklore Postcards to top 100 Uploaders
• Certificates and postcards to Local Organizers.
