First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|correct name}}
  • For more information read the full deletion guidelines

Hi. There were some concerns on the German Wikipedia about this image. Multiple users claimed it is a rain cloud, not the ash cloud. Sequentially, it has been removed from the German and also English Wikipedia article.

Could you comment on that, please? What sources do you have that this is indeed the ash cloud? Kind regards, --Church of emacs (talk) 17:52, 20 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. It rains often in Bergen, and that cloud pictured looks nothing like the clouds we normally have, and a stench of sulfur spread over the entire city. The statistics from the Norwegian Metrological Institute shows there was only 4,7 mm of rainfall on that day, and I attest that rainfall was not until the cloud pictured had moved east and away from the city. Also note the statistics for rainfall on the following Saturday, at 32,3 mm. There were no clouds like the one pictured that day. The photo also shows sunlight hitting the houses. I have several other pictures of the sky that day, and I can upload them later (when I get home) so you can see what the weather was like. There was also a news report about this in an article published on the website on one of the local newspapers, but I can't find it now. I'll look for it when I get home. I hope this clears thing up. --stiaand 23:02, 20 April 2010 (UTC +2)

Here's the article from Bergensavisen with a picture showing the same cloud, only taken from the north instead of from the south, as mine. I have also uploaded the other photos I took that day. --stiaand 19:38, 21 April 2010 (UTC +2)

Thanks for the answer and your further research into that matter, I'll mention it on the talk page of the German article. Regards, --Church of emacs (talk) 23:28, 21 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
