First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Hello!

Thank you for providing images to the Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. Siebrand 21:50, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I have added your comments on Image:Sophie Marceau2.jpg to a deletion request, you can find the request here. Please add any other information you might think relevant there. Kind regards, -- Deadstar (msg) 10:42, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What about other pictures?[edit]

Several people (including me) asked about "public domain" status of other pictures you downloaded. If you do not want them being modified either, plase state your will.

I also insist you confirm, that both pictures was made by you (second one looks like a frame of the movie). A.J. 10:37, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is important I am discussing the whole story with specialists. Integrity of images is the key issue here; if two figures may be separated by anyone altering the original image, that means all group portraits in Wikipedia are at risk.
If a better license would be CC-BY-ND, and this license is now used in many images on Wikipedia, but still how safe those images are? Is it safe to donate more images under CC-BY-ND license without worrying about the risk of alteration of images by other users?
Re: my own works; the first is a 35mm shot taken after a make-up work was done at Lenfilm studio before filming in Leningrad; the second is a 35 mm ORWO slide film, the shot was taken in the summer of 1970 on filming location for Dauria (1971 film) near Narva, Estonia. During the filming of Dauriya (Dauria, 1971 film), I stayed there with my father for a few days and took shots using a roll of 35mm ORWO slide film, and several rolls of 35 mm black-and-white film. Both actors, Petr Shelokhonov and Vitaly Solomin are now deceased. I want to make sure that integrity of their images and their personal rights are treated with full respect.

Again, if two figures may be separated by anyone altering the original image, that means all group portraits in Wikipedia are at risk. I am discussing this with specialists. Steveshelokhonov 23:56, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Steve,
All files uploaded here must obey Commons:Licensing. All files must be under a license that allows the creation of derivative works. So you can't use CC-BY-ND here. It would be like creating a page on Wikipedia and saying "no one else can change it", or "no one else can change it unless I approve". Of course, that is unacceptable.
Therefore I suggest you probably want the files you've already uploaded to be deleted, yes? pfctdayelise (说什么?) 08:43, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
HI, Brianna,
Please keep the three already existing images just the way they are, they illustrate articles adequately, and are unlikely to be fragmented for derivative works, as the actors shown are deceased.
Now I see it in many sources, that "copyleft" is about the creation of derivatives, and that's fine with me. Normally people are thoughtful about the deceased person. However, I'll think before uploading more group portraits with Sophie Marceau and Sean Bean among others.
I want to thank everybody, for this highly educational experience, and for being patient with me. This experience is from a completely different world for me. Your understanding and respect is highly appreciated. Regards Steveshelokhonov 02:52, 16 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
