Short note to let you know I have copied your picture Image:Astrolabe-Persian-18C.jpg in Commons and proposed it as a featured picture. It is extremely beautiful villy 16:06, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Okay. Eventually I hope you will come to the conclusion that yes, Commons is friendly enough for any purpose related to your work :) villy 06:58, 18 December, 2004 (UTC)

Migrant mother[edit]

Hi Andrew. You created Image:Lange-MigrantMother02.jpg as a retouched version of Image:Lange-MigrantMother.jpg. Your retouched version is only 1549x2015, whereas the original version is 6205x8066. Would you be willing to redo your retouching, starting with the original high-resolution 8b29516u.tif? Thanks, Dbenbenn 18:48, 20 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Done - although its almost too large to handle on my laptop. Unfortunately I uploaded it to the wrong filename at Image:Lange-MigrantMother2.jpg rather than Image:Lange-MigrantMother02.jpg. -- Solipsist 09:48, 25 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I went ahead and re-uploaded your new image over the 02 version, and tagged the 2 version for speedy deletion. Dbenbenn 08:24, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Senzaburu - or 1000 cranes.[edit]

Is this picture--Emokpareabraham (talk) 23:17, 28 May 2014 (UTC) from you? If so, do you have informations on how many cranes exactly were created by Sadako before she died??? Does anyone have some?[reply]

There are different suggestions. On the german sadako article there are 644 cranes mentioned - which is the only real number given. Then I read the english sadako article and it seems that those 644 aren´t correct?

I followed the links from the english article to the 2 memorial web sites, but didn't find any other suggestions on how many existed exactly.

Only some guessing like "over xxx pieces" and the like :( - Andi, 20th Oct. 05

Well if you mean this image, then yes that's one of my photos. However, like you, I've subsequently read several conflicting accounts of the story with regard to the number of cranes Sadako actually completed. I'm not sure how authorative the sadako.org site is, but they quote 'over one thousand' cranes folded. Perhaps you know of some more authorative sources that credibly give a definative answer, but my guess would be that the 'folding over 1,300 paper cranes' version is probably true. This is simply because the 644 cranes story with classmates later folding the remainder, makes for the better story. As such it is more likely to continue being propagated even if it is not actually true. -- Solipsist 20:26, 25 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Commonsians[edit]

(In reply to Template_talk:Welcome) well, yes, but I am afraid I have been monopolising COM:VP lately. I don't want to annoy people. :)

I find commons really interesting. Everyone is quite laid-back, because their main interest is usually elsewhere, so they're not as emotionally vested here. (unless you try to delete one of their photos, I guess!)

--pfctdayelise 10:56, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Commonsites, has a nice ambiguity to it. But any of these suggestions are fine. Be Bold, I doubt that the Template:Welcome gets much use on Commons, since, as you say, most people here are actually active and already welcomed on one of the other Wikimedia projects. On the other hand, I've just checked its What links here and it looks like it is getting used more than I would have guessed and there must be more that have been subst'd. -- Solipsist 20:01, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Art Deco[edit]

Thanks for the message. I'm not concerned one way or another whether the Henry Moore sculpture is in the Art Deco category or not - I simply tagged it as it's attached to an Art Deco building and thought anyone requiring illustrations might well find it useful to find it categorised in context. But I think old Henry must have been on a bit of a Deco vibe when he produced that one! Man vyi 20:07, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Guten Tag Solipsist :)

I suggested the photograph Image:Albert Harris - Coconut shy B.jpg on COM:FPC for beeing featured. You uploaded this image. One of the voters asked if the photographed person, Albert Harris, gives his permission for this image to be used. Do you know something about this?

Thanks - I've replied on the nomination page. -- Solipsist 17:54, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You said: in the UK it is fine to use images of people taken in public, even for commercial use, so long as the image isn't defamatory or used for advertising.

But surely advertising is a large part of commercial use...and that's the UK law, but images are hosted in the US, seen and used around the world, etc.

I'm being quite picky, but I just find it really confusing and contradictory, how policy is applied to issues like this. It has something to do with w:Personality rights, but...*sigh* it's times like these I almost wish I was a lawyer. Like should we be having people sign model release forms or what?

Anyway, if you have any insight, I'd love to hear it. cheers, pfctdayelise 23:37, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yes its complicated. In addition to copyright laws there are also a number of different laws that may affect the rights of a photographer to take a photograph and other laws that can affect the ways a photograph may be used. Doubley complicated when you take into account that most of these laws vary from one country to the next. In this instance, the issues are not copyright issues, but rights to privacy. You can find some useful and relevant discussion in this shorthand guide (pdf) to UK photographer's rights (the section on Harrasment and Invasion of Privacy for example).
As you will see from that guide, there are plenty of situations where having a model release form signed by the subject would help in putting any legal issues beyond doubt. But no, we shouldn't be requiring them. It is up to the publisher of the photograph to decide whether there are complying with any other laws that might apply when they publish a picture. We can't be responsible for that. -- Solipsist 09:57, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Pryku[edit]

Hi, thanks for your message. Yes, I did go through Pryku's uploads and, to put it simply, Pryku tags all uploads with "GFDL-self", regardless of where he found the photo (mostly English Wikipedia). Image:Shenzhen map2005.jpg is a case in point.

Pryku is obviously ignorant of how to tag images properly. Regarding blocking him/her for a longer time, Pryku has not been active since August 2005 (although Pryku is maintaining a low-level activity on Polish wikipedia). I leave it to your judgment if Pryku should be blocked or not. Thuresson 06:33, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Commons-l subscription[edit]

Hello Solipsist,

as per Commons talk:Administrators, I am asking all admins to subscribe to commons-l, a mailing list for Wikimedia Commons policy and project discussion. Since many admins are only on Commons infrequently, this is a good way to alert people about important happenings. The mailing list is nominally multilingual, but predominantly English.

If you are already subscribed to commons-l, I apologize for bothering you, and you are free to ignore this message. If you don't want to use your regular e-mail account, feel free to leave me a message, and I can send you a GMail invite. Traffic on the mailing list is relatively low, and we do not expect admins to read all messages to the list, but it would be nice if you could check on it at least every few weeks. Thanks for your time,--Eloquence 23:19, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's quite right - that's me. The photograph is copyright of the photographer and then licensed for use under cc-by-sa. You should know that nearly all photographs licensed under GFDL and Creative Commons are copyright of the photographer. If you have uploaded some of your own photographs, you might like to read through these licenses carefully. -- Solipsist 07:07, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:ARM-Cambridge.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you.

Quo Modo Deum[edit]

I'm very interested in finding a higher-resolution source for the "Quo Modo Deum" alchemical woodcut GIF you uploaded to the commons some time ago. If you can help, or point me at the original paper source of this item, I'd really appreciate it. -- the preceding unsigned comment is by Somnambulist (talk • contribs) 03:35, 19 February 2007

Yes, sorry - it looks like someone did a less than ideal job in copying across the original source information from the En Wiki. I've now updated the image description page. Unfortunately, the source site, wingedeyesymbol.homestead.com appears to have closed down, and a Google image search on "Quo Modo Deum" now only finds images that are derived from Wikipedia. -- Solipsist 13:00, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Waiting for help[edit]

Can you help? I've tried asking for help with an audio file upload problem on the Help Requests page and at the Village Pump. It's been over a week and no one has offered to help. The short of it is that an audio file I uploaded needs to be corrected. It is an audio recording demonstrating pronunciation for a Wiktionary entry. The primary stress should be on the fiest syllable, not the second syllable as I originally recorded it.

The problem begam when I tried to upload the corrected version. The new upload did not overwrite the existing file. The software seems to have buried it in an older version of the recording. Can you delete the existing file for Image:En-us-leitmotif.ogg for me? That way I can just load the new version and not have to worry about the overwriting not working properly. (And yes, I have already purged, shut down and restarted, returned after a week, and checked everything at this end I possibly can. The problem is real.) --EncycloPetey 06:41, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Administrative notice[edit]

Deutsch

Hi. This message is sent out to you because you are an administrator on Commons, and you made little use (or no use) of the admin tools lately: less than 5 times in the last five months.

Commons has a new policy on admin activity, Commons:Administrators/De-adminship, taken into use on June 13, 2007 (after a poll among users). According to that policy, admins who use their tools infrequently will be asked whether they still need their adminship, and if they do not respond or require them the removal of the tools will be requested.

If you feel you still need your admin tools, please sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section within 30 days from the date this message was sent out. However, if you then don't make 5 admin actions in the following 5 months, you will lose the adminship without any notice.

This is not a comment on the considerable help you have given to the project in the past but reflects the wish of the community to see active administrators and to ensure that possible security breaches are minimized.

Hello, Solipsist~commonswiki!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:Summer Solstice 2005 Sunrise over Stonehenge 01.jpg[edit]

Hi there Andrew, we have used this pic in this article: http://www.blatantworld.com/documentary/britain_bc_part_2_of_2.html cheers for providing it under license

Please help replace this outdated license[edit]

Hello!

Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license PD. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.

The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding PD-self if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.

Thank you for your help. If you need help feel free to ask at Commons talk:Licensing or contact User:Zscout370.

The images we would like you to check are:

Image of "La Belle"[edit]

Hi, I wanted to see the source for the image you uploaded of the blue print of the French Galleon "La Belle" (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:LaBelle_Blueprint.jpg) but the link is inoperable. Am wondering how you found the image in the first place and if you could update the source link. Thank you! 76.170.42.104 14:04, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

User-FastFission-brain.gif[edit]

Hey, would it be possible to add a side view of the scanned head to the animation File:User-FastFission-brain.gif, where one can see the position of the shown slices? (For better understanding: imagine a head shaped, transparent container getting filled with color(ed fluid)). At the moment I'm able to use the time when the eyes show up to estimate the way of the scan takes through the head, but thats very superficial or patchy I think. -- 194.95.142.180 18:55, 1 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think the description of this image is not quite correct. This image represents an anatomical MRI scan, not an fMRI scan. Anatomical MRI scans like this one are (almost) always acquired during an fMRI session, for spatial reference, but the actual fMRI images are much lower resolution. -- Jamapeace, 4 december 2019

Thanks for uploading File:Salisbury Cathedral from Cathedral Yard.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Salisbury Cathedral from Cathedral Yard.jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.

Pay attention to copyright
File:Hepworth FamilyOfMan 1970.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Thanks for uploading File:Lightmatter chichen15.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.
