Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. Tip: Categorizing images[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:52, 23 December 2009 (UTC)

Schoolgirls one[edit]
Would you mind if I uploaded a slightly tweaked version that removes the clipping? It is a lovely image and can be dealt with easily if you don't have the time yourself. Regards --Herby talk thyme 11:47, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
- Two minutes and it will be uploaded. Just recovery and a touch of clarity really, happy to help. And I will support it - it is a very good image. Regards --Herby talk thyme 11:57, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
- Sorted - if you want me to do the same with the "schoolboys" one feel free to let me know. It is another good simple image. Cheers
Ok - it is better for sure (& there was a bit more to do - recovery at 100 didn't quite make it). It does still look at touch over exposed at the top but there is no clipping. If you want me to have another go you know where I am :)
The set one is a bit odd I guess. I am fairly new to that side of Commons myself. I guess I would prefer a featured picture maybe. Leave it a week and then nominate it (I'm planning the same with another snow pano!). Take care out there - cheers --Herby talk thyme 12:39, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
- Re-worked it a bit differently, revert if you don't like it tho (did it in a rather more subtle way). It would be good if the image was geo-tagged if that is not an issue of any sort? Cheers --Herby talk thyme 17:16, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
Sort of thought that but didn't want to presume. All the best for 2010 and hope you and the others with you get home soon and safe. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 09:29, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

Your account will be renamed[edit]
Hello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Severnjc. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Severnjc~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours,
Keegan Peterzell
