Image:Eccentricity.svg

Could you remove red circle (e=0) from this image, I can not work with svg-files. It is misleading, for e=0 it is a point. --Tosha 16:26, 10 June 2006 (UTC)

For any given point $F$ and eccentricity e, there is a graph for which every point $M$ satisfies the condition

$e=|MF|/|MM'|$

where $M'$ is the projection of $M$ onto a line that $F$ does not lie on.

This is a useful way to present the different conic sections visually. The ratios of the hyperbola, parabola and ellipse seem to be correct, but the circle is way off. How did you draw the image? Did you do so "by hand" or did you have some software calculate the graphs? --Swift 10:05, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

I just uploaded a new version of Image:Eccentricity.svg without the circle. If you are fine with this, I'll change the references to the png version back to the svg one.

The parabola graph seems to widen a bit at either side of the "bottom". Is this just a problem with my SVG viewer (xsvg)? --Swift 10:42, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

I traced the PNG version; replaced the line, ellipse and text label tracings with their respective primitives; and added the circle by hand. Even if the series of curves does culminate in a point (the math is getting a little beyond me), I think a circle should nevertheless appear on the diagram just to show that: (a) all circles have zero eccentricity, and (b) circle-ellipse-parabola-hyperbola-line is a smoothly transitioning series of curve shapes. I'd never actually seen an SVG image before and didn't know that it was a simple XML file. I might look into writing a script that spits out accurate values for the curves. I'll let you know if I plan on updating the image.

As for the circle, I still find that including it would be more confusing than not. If it were a simple case of a few graphs, then yes, but since the purpose of the image is to show the property mentioned in my previous comment above, the circle does not belong.

The math isn't very difficult at all. Take a pen(cil) and paper (and an optional ruler). Draw a line (this will be the $e=\infty$ one) and a point (name it $F$) some distance away. Now, pick a point between $F$ and the line (name it $M$). Now what we are going to do is nudge $M$. However, the ratio between the distance $|MF|$ and $|MM'|$ (here $M'$ is the point on the line, closest to $M$) must be fixed. E.g. they must always be equal (eccentricity 1) or $|MF|$ must always be half that of $|MM'|$ (eccentricity $1/2$).

Still with me? Now nudge $M$ without relaxing the ratio-constraint. Both $|MF|$ and $|MM'|$ will have to increase, but make sure that they increase proportionally. This way moving away from the original spot for $M$ will give us a uniqe curve, characterised by the eccentricity.

Compare this to the image and you will see that while the hyperbola, parabola and ellipse all satisfy this, the circle doesn't.

So, what about it? Can I convince you to agree with us that the circle doesn't belong there since it breaks the smooth transition? I wouldn't mind seeing a couple of other courves as well, one having high eccentricity (close to the line) and the other very low (very small circle of, say, $e=10$ or so). Flags

Hi, indeed, i worked with the true colours of the flags. For some countries if you use other colours than those of the law your outlaw (as Finland or Argentina if I remember). And if you only use 1 shade of blue, you'll have problem with coutries such Luxemburg and Netherlands. That's why I used real colours. I can change those for which I don't have a law, but for other ones I thinks better to keep them safe :)

For the shade indeed that's not really a problem. I have a second layer over the flag itself, so I can change it enouch quick. It will take me half a day to change all of them. Once I have the good layer, copy paste and hop... done :)

For the borders, er, hard to know how many time to do that, but not much as creating new flags :)

For colours, as you want. Indeed, laws use pantone colours and there are tables of conversion to have RGB colours or CMYK that's how you can get the closer colour. :)

I'll finish my collection of flag both with the true colours and with the full nuvola colours then, that'll make a full collection of flags :) . But for the shade, I prefer keeping the shade on an overlay, it is really usefull to have the same shade on every flag. To the fact off adding some colours when needed, it won't at all do anything to the weight of the picture, so i don't see why I would lose a full time adding shade colour by colour juste to have 1ko less by pic :)

Still, I think the outside border on each charge should be thickened up to a full pixel, as should any fimbrillations that aren't already that thick.

ER... Don't forget I'm french speaker... so sometimes I can't understand everything and this time I don't understand you. Which border do you want to thicken??

as for your new Albania flag: it's a perfect example of what we're after! The only thing I could think of adding would be a drop shadow, offset down 1/2 pixel and right 1/2 pixel. (All quantities are in terms of the default rendering size of 60x60.) I can't wait to show these to relevant Wikipedia WikiProjects.

It won't be easy to make and keep the original size. For the shadow, it's easy to copy paste bur fot his I have to do this one by one... I need to resize the flag, and add a layer under with a so small offset... quite hard to see nothing I think... :-S

BTW, what software do you use to make these flags? Do you do them all one-by-one or do you have a batch script?

I use the one and only inkscape... :) I could try to writ a code that make the modifications to all flags but the time I write it, the mods will have been done manually. :)

P.S. Given that you've got the original shading down so amazingly, and I haven't, I wouldn't mind at all if you were to overwrite the flags I did with your versions.

OK, so I understood what you wanted but I'm not sure to want to do this. I'd rather prefer to keep he flags as real as they can be. If you begin to add some lines betxeen colours and so on, to be small, that may be good, but in high sizes, it will be awful... :)

Second point. I still have problems with the colours.

I did again Ecuador and Argentina. For Ecuador, there's no problem, that's yellow red and blue, so I chang change the original colours to solid ones. but for argentina, I need to have a sky blue. Which colour do you want me to use?? I really don't know. I tried some variations, but the solid blue with more white, I cannot recognize at all the flag. :(

I just saw you can do great svg files and I would like to know if you can do some for me. I have here some PS3 and PSP icons and would like to know if you can vectorize them. Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

how can i make a nuvola styled flag emoji by myself

I would like to know how could I make a nuvola styled based emoji for one my flag by myself, specifically I'd like to know if there's a program which turns already svg flags into svg nuvola styled emojies or if there's a process going through illustrator or something else, I'd like to make the flag of my region of Italy, the region is called Basilicata and I've seen there's no yet the flag in the regional list of flags already made 37.163.30.221 23:48, 3 November 2021 (UTC)
