Own work (CC) V Flickr user (PD)[edit]

Hi. You have recently uploaded several images with a tag of "own work". However, at least some of them appear to have been previously published elsewhere on the internet with a different source/authorship. For example, File:Saint Lappan patron saint of Bagenalstown.jpg (uploaded to Commons 2 Jun 2023 as your "own work") was previously published by Flickr user "Philip K" as "Saint Lappán of Bagenalstown" (uploaded to Flickr on 17 Nov 2022 as "public domain"). Please confirm which is correct and (if needed) update the tags/licence/authorship/credit as needed. If changes are required (on this and other files), please also ensure not to claim accidentally claim "own work" on images/works which were authored by other people. Thanks. Pay attention to copyright
File:Blessed Clementina Nengapeta.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Copyright and Flickr[edit]

It has been mentioned to you on enwiki, and I'll add that all those concerns are valid. Also, the Flickr stream you're drawing from, whether it is yours or someone else's, has significant copyright problems across the board. Some works appear to be hand-drawn and possibly an artist's original work, and many others are photographs or derivatives of photographic works, and by no means could be placed in the public domain, by you or the Flickr account holder. I also agree that it's bad form to promote your own work by forcing it into every article possible, especially when there is no artistic reputation or value of these works, and they have not been reviewed or sanctioned by a body of the Catholic Church, which may have something to say about iconographic representations. Thanks. Elizium23 (talk) 01:32, 3 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate your advice/assistance. What do you propose I do? Should I remove the images?
Unlike the Orthodox Church the Catholic Church is far more liberal when it comes to sacred artwork, allowing artists a great deal more freedom of expression; sanctioning is generally unneccessary unless when there are questions as to the blasphemous, disrespectful or untasteful nature of a piece.
The subjects of my art are generally undepicted by other artists which in itself is a good reason to include them - as there are no other representations available.
Fair enough my art is not Michelangelo standard but they do have a certain appeal of their own, reputation or not. I am gaining nothing from doing this as the artwork is (purposely) attributed to my wiki name and not my real name, so as an artist I am not getting the exposure which artists need/desire for their reportoire. Moreover I have put some of them in the public domain so that others may be able to use this sacred art for the benefit of their faith and devotion. You're certainly free to contribute truly original work to Commons, and it is welcome. What you do on other projects is subject to their local policies and governance. Some frown upon self-promotion or conflicts of interest (this is where enwiki will be especially harsh) so familiarize yourself with the policies and guidelines in that regard. Other languages and other projects may be more welcoming. I'd say that transparency is your best policy. If you declare openly that you are the author of the images and you wish to add them here and there, then those communities can make an informed decision. If you meet resistance, propose edits on the talk page and build consensus for the additions.
It's certainly important work to illustrate the lives of lesser-known saints, and personally I don't agree with a lot of Intellectual Property laws, but that's a world we live in, and good-faith people get blocked and run off, because they didn't understand the rules, or didn't comply in time. I wish you all the best. Elizium23 (talk) 07:32, 3 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
File:Blessed Clementina Nengapeta.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

I use a different name on flickr but it is my account. The original artworks are mine. Philip K is me. I make my own artwork public domain so that others may be able to use them if they so wish for their private devotion and spiritual benefit. 2A01:B340:82:4A37:5F03:A0AE:A0CA:5343 19:38, 14 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If you control the Wix site then it should be possible for you to immediately add a properly-worded license statement that is compatible with the licensing you've used here on Commons (which is not Public Domain, but our default of CC-BY-SA-4.0). I also recommend that you log in and participate directly in the deletion discussion as it was linked to you here. Elizium23 (talk) 20:08, 14 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
What should I say on the website? (regarding a license statement) I used four images from that website - all my own work. Robert444444 (talk) 20:28, 14 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
These images were made by me whether as Philip K or Robert444444. They are all either CC-BY-SA-4.0, public domain or attributed to Philip K.
I'm kinda confused myself. I don't see what the issue is if they were made by me. What matter if they have different licences. I gave them those licences anyway and I have no issue as the owner.
Some of the images are not my original artworks but photograghs of people (saints) who have been dead for many years, which means that the copyright is no longer required, as the person has been dead for so long. Robert444444 (talk) 20:47, 14 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
