RE: Copyright data[edit]

As requested I added

Public domain

This work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 70 years or fewer.

You must also include a United States public domain tag to indicate why this work is in the public domain in the United States. Note that a few countries have copyright terms longer than 70 years: Mexico has 100 years, Jamaica has 95 years, Colombia has 80 years, and Guatemala and Samoa have 75 years. This image may not be in the public domain in these countries, which moreover do not implement the rule of the shorter term. Honduras has a general copyright term of 75 years, but it does implement the rule of the shorter term. Copyright may extend on works created by French who died for France in World War II (more information), Russians who served in the Eastern Front of World War II (known as the Great Patriotic War in Russia) and posthumously rehabilitated victims of Soviet repressions (more information).

to the Licensing agreements and in a copyright area. I hope htis suffices. Please let me know if it doesn't.

Re: Portable water purification[edit]

Hallo Hydrargyrum,

I translated Portable water purification to another language. The guys there asked me for citations for verification for:

similar in function and appearance to a mechanic's grease gun

Therefore I sought the revision-history and found your edit here (20.06.2006)(#12/20/2006#). Can you help me to find some documents or images proving this? This would be great.

Probably, you know somebody able to take a photo of such a device.

I was writing from memory. I saw such a portable device on a television news report or program, or perhaps an engineering journal, some 10-20 years ago. Also, similar devices have been offered for sale in outdoor sporting goods stores for the civilian market and as survival equipment with inflatable life rafts. Mechanics' grease guns are designed to create a very large mechanical advantage with their pump levers, because it often takes high pressure to inject grease into bearings and movable joints. Similarly, reverse osmosis requires considerable pressure, more than one can provide with direct muscle power alone, so the designers of the hand-held devices borrowed from the mechanisms used in grease guns to increase the mechanical advantage. It took a bit of searching with Google, but I eventually located a couple of photos of such devices at Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/Katadyn-8013418-Survivor-06-Desalinator/dp/B000F395X0/ and http://www.amazon.com/Katadyn-Survivor-35-Watermaker-Used/dp/B0012YS3XE/. The second example, the Katadyn Survivor 35 Watermaker, has the classic "grease gun" appearance. I don't own one, and most likely never will, due to the high price, so I can't be of help in getting a first-hand photo. Maybe a footnote referencing the Katadyn devices at the manufacturer's Web site might be sufficient. —Quicksilver@ 19:04, 24 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the fast, comprehensive reply. I did not recognize that it would be superior to search the web for desalination of water and I'm sorry for the incorrect date. (Of course it should be 20 December 2006)--RE RILLKE Questions? 11:51, 25 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

John Tennent[edit]

Hi. W. John Tennent is a friend and entomological colleague of mine. We both served in the British armed forces when we were younger and we share an interest in Oriental butterflies. The images of his that I have adapted and uploaded to Commons were taken by him for an entomological paper. He has given me express permission to upload my composite versions here under CC Attribution 3.0. Thanks for your enquiry. ACCassidy (talk) 21:45, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Update Vivarium[edit]

Hi Rillke! I finished a new version of the WikiWidget Vivarium. Could you update the code at MediaWiki:WikiWidget-Vivarium.js and MediaWiki:WikiWidget-Vivarium.css with the code here and here? Thanks! --Felipe (talk) 04:40, 2 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Felipe Schenone: Thanks. I'll update. Please post GitHub links in future as GitBlit is broken since ever. -- Rillke(q?) 11:45, 3 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

WikiWidgets update[edit]

Hi Rillke! I've been working hard on the new versions of both Formicarium and Vivarium for the upcoming Hackathon. You can find the latest versions at Gerrit or the GitHub mirrors:

I have tested them extensively, could you take care of the updates? I have also improved the initialisation script for WikiWidgets and uploaded it to:

Could you create a page for it at MediaWiki:WikiWidgets.js? This will allow any wiki to load the latest version of the script by simply adding the following to their MediaWiki:Common.js

if ( $( '.WikiWidget' ).length ) {
	mw.loader.load( '//commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:WikiWidgets.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript' );
}

Beautiful, isn't it? The length check is to avoid unnecessary calls to Commons. I'm trying to leave the project at its best for the upcoming Hackathon in Jerusalem in a few days. For this reason, I'd appreciate if you could take care of this asap, so that I may update the templates and documentation to fit the latest versions. Thanks, thanks, thanks! --Felipe (talk) 23:13, 24 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Felipe Schenone: Could you please ensure the URL parameters are encoded, e.g. using encodeURIComponent or $.param. And I'd like to see if ( /^MediaWiki:[^&<>=%#]*\.js$/.test( wikiwidget ) ) as a condition before doing anything in load: function ( wikiwidget ). Otherwise malicious users may try to override URL-parameters or similar, even if not currently possible, it might be in future when something changes in MediaWiki's core. Thanks -- Rillke(q?) 02:51, 25 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Rillke: Hi Rillke, thanks for the quick reply, and sorry for my delayed resposne, I've been out of the city until today, but now I'll be fully active until the hackathon, so any requests you make I can accommodate them immediately. I've modified the WikiWidgets.js script, check it out! Did I miss anything? Thanks again! --Felipe (talk) 19:52, 28 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Result of the update below:

Thanks Rillke! I started the update of the templates and documentation, and I'll fix the warnings issued by the bot in the next few hours/days. Cheers! --Felipe (talk) 15:29, 29 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
There are warnings that are safe to ignore, e.g. if you have a pixel layout, you of course want to use px in css. -- Rillke(q?) 15:46, 29 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rillke, I am a bored bot (this is kind of a computer program) that is watching the recent changes and tapping buttons like I did now.

Curious about the reason? Possibly not but I will tell you anyway:

  1. You edited MediaWiki:WikiWidget-Formicarium.css. Thank you for caring about Wikimedia Commons's css pages.
  2. Though, that change appears to introduce 4 new prettyCss issues — the page's status is now having warnings.
  3. To help you understanding where the issues are, I have aggregated a report here and now. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask users experienced in css writing for help. But do not ask the bot's operators (chronically overwrought) unless you suspect an error of mine.

New WikiWidget[edit]

Hi again Rillke! I finished the first version of the third wikiwidget, called Automata. You can find the code at the GitHub mirror of the Gerrit repo. Would you mind copying the code to the MediaWiki namespace like with the other wikiwidgets? Specifically, to the pages MediaWiki:WikiWidget-Automata.js and MediaWiki:WikiWidget-Automata.css. Once this is done, I will update the documentation here at Commons and create the necessary template at the Spanish wikipedia to start using the widget. Thanks! --Felipe (talk) 00:52, 30 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The tool seems to be getting some traffic: https://toolviews.toolforge.org/api/v1/tool/convert/daily/2023-11-01/2023-11-30.

I was wondering if you would like help working on phab:T319646 so that https://convert.toolforge.org can keep running after the grid engine shutdown? I think the basic process would look something like:
