You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

File:VAW-125 Landing on USS Saratoga.png[edit]

Hi, I found the above file and others by chance and wanted to recommend a few modifications that might be helpful. When I was new at Commons I did a lot of things different from today. Maybe I became wiser over the years ... (?!):

title: "VAW-125 Landing on USS Saratoga": I would recommend to use a title like "E-2C of VAW-125 landing on USS Saratoga (CV-60) in 1991". It descripbes more accurately what is shown on the photo and gives the date. Most people do not know what "VAW-125" is and there were several USS Saratogas. Besides, VAW-125 is not landing on the carrier, but an E-2C of VAW-125.
png-format: PNG is mostly only used for graphics (or SVG), patches etc, photos are mostly jpeg.
USN photos with known IDs are mostly available at the National Archives, do not use navsource or others, then.
Look for existing categories: you created category "VAW-125", but category "Airborne Early Warning Squadron 125 (United States Navy)" already exists. Also, categories like "E-2C Hawkeye" were missing, although this is what the photo shows.
If you use the "NARA-image" source, it is automatically categorized as a NARA image, so you don't have to create a category for that. Also, a category should be specific, like "Files from Archive XYZ" not just "Archive XYZ".
Wikipedia is not US-American an not US Military. Therefore is is often helpful to modify the official descriptions. Sometimes the NARA (formerly defenseimagery.mil) descriptions are incorrect or they are public relations-motivated. I do to criticize this, as they publish them, but I always try to give neutral descriptions that are also understandable by most people, even without specific military knowledge.
