Hello, Pipcallas!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hope you're aware that that image is strongly subject to the "Hermann grid illusion" effect... AnonMoos (talk) 03:22, 7 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. Might want to check on the comments left at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Flag of the Earth.svg -- AnonMoos (talk) 03:22, 7 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
File:Flag of the United Nations.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

"File:Earth Flag Alt-0.svg‎" name[edit]

Just expand to "alternate", as in files I've uploaded such as File:Celtic-knot-basic-alternate.svg, File:Knotwork-cross-alternate.svg. Anyway, no one thinks that Alt-country is right-wing extremist... AnonMoos (talk) 10:39, 1 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your suggestion to expand "Alt-0" to "Alternate-0", although I'm confused at the part about "Alt-country". If I understand, the suggestion reflects wanting to preserve the uploader's "schema" for naming files. As the file's uploader, I should say there wasn't a meaningful schema beyond distinguishing the file quickly from other files stored on my computer at the time. The other proposed change, to "Earth_Flag_(2004)", could communicate understandable info about the file — the date of the flag's design. On the Wikimedia page "Commons:File renaming", it mentions "six widely undisputed uses for rename requests", of which only the first two listed could possibly be pertinent: "At the original uploader’s request", and "To change from a meaningless or ambiguous name". If the file is to be renamed at all, and if "File:Earth_Flag_(2004)" isn't desirable, other possible names that might be meaningful to users of Wikimedia are "File:Planet_Earth_Flag" (reflecting the name of a website where the flag is featured), and "File:Abstract_Earth_Flag" (reflecting the name applied to the design by a large and unaffiliated flag manufacturer offering the flag for purchase). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pipcallas (talk • contribs) 11:11, 2 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

"File:Earth Flag (2004).svg"[edit]

The ordinary description and the Wikidata "caption" are two completely separate things; it's not really useful or desirable to remove information from one of these because you've added it to the other... AnonMoos (talk) 14:40, 11 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
