There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Thanks[edit]

Dear Pinatyaimi, Thanks for these uploads of photographs from Suriname, New Guinea and other places. Hundreds of new nice photos, real gems for Commons and Wiki. Don't you want to tag them with Category:Files from the Nationaal Museum van Wereldculturen or a similar category? Vysotsky (talk) 09:41, 5 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Langetabbetje in Suriname, 1947

Hi Pinatyaimi,

Sorry, it's not really my field so I don't understand the details. Can you please tell me though why you're removing so many items from Category:Maroons of Suriname? Particularly the ones which are under Category:Photographs by Willem van de Poll in Suriname? (I did a lot of categorization work on the van de Poll photos) What's the issue here? Would these people not be considered as Maroons? Or do they need to be placed into one of the narrower sub-categories?

Thanks, Andy Dingley (talk) 23:10, 9 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Andy
Thanks for your message. I indeed removed those photos from the category Maroons of Suriname because they clearly display Paramaka people from the Paramaka capital Langatabiki. There are six different Maroon nations in Suriname, and I am currently focussing on organizing photos of the Ndyuka nation. I think the category Category:Maroons of Suriname should be reserved for photographs of Maroons that cannot be clearly identified as belonging to one of the six nations. The photographs by Willem van de Poll are taken in Langatabiki and include only Paramakas. I hope you can agree with my reasoning, Pinatyaimi (talk) 23:18, 9 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks for making it clear. I am unfamiliar with the Paramaka people.
Can I suggest though (a technical point) that you look at the "Perform batch task" option on the left-hand sidebar? It's a semi-automated tool which can be useful for cases like this. In particular, it would be easy to apply this on the vdP photos cat, select those which were in Maroons of Suriname, and to auto-convert that category to the Paramaka category. It's easier to do that while the old category (even if incorrect) is still there as a guide. Andy Dingley (talk) 23:47, 9 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I actually thought that the Langatabbetje category that all these photos are in now is already sufficient for these pictures, and that these pictures don't have to be included in Category:Paramaka people. Category:Langatabbetje is a subcategory of Category:Paramaka settlements, which is again part of Category:Paramaka people. Maybe I understand the policy wrong, but I assumed that when these pictures are part of the category of Langatabbetje (a particular Paramaka settlement), they should not be included in the category for the Paramaka people in general as well (just as photographs in the category "People of New York City" shouldn't also be included in the category "People of the United States"). Pinatyaimi (talk) 00:01, 10 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That would depend on what "Langatabbetje" means for us. To me it was purely geography - so I'd tend to categorize each image, which focussed on people with a category for those people. So just houses, boats, or even v d Poll himself wouldn't go in there. A lot of that would depend what's in our overall Langatabbetje cat, once we've seen the content we have (I did nearly thirty thousand vdPs - it was hard to know what we'd have until we had it). If everything is people, then the overall categorization would be fine. If people are now scarce, maybe it would need more. Your call. Andy Dingley (talk) 00:35, 10 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You're right. I'll add the photos to Category:Paramaka people. Thanks for contacting me! Pinatyaimi (talk) 12:30, 10 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Gottlieb Meissel - Busch Neger Camp 'Lantiwei' an der oberen Cottica.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

@Pinatyaimi: The description reads Prins Willem VI, but in Het Vaderland, states it is the SS Prins Willem IV. Can you adapt this? Vysotsky and Gouwenaar might be interested too Thank you for your time. Lotje (talk) 13:14, 20 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

There was no freighter "Prins Willem VI", but a "s.s. Prince Willem IV", see here. Gouwenaar (talk) 18:41, 20 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Lotje: , there is no doubt in my mind you are right. I just copied the caption and description from the NMvW website, and I know from experience these captions are often lacking. Feel free to change the mistakes. All the best, Pinatyaimi (talk) 14:01, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hallo Gouwenaar, als je 't mij vraag, zou een rename van alle files geen overbodige luxe zijn. Wat denk je? Thanks. Lotje (talk) 14:03, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Correct. Gouwenaar (talk) 16:30, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
