Category edit reverted[edit]

Good day. I reverted this edit of yours. Not all media of the History of Mississippi are from that single source. Thanks for your attention. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 16:22, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure what you mean. Are they still in History of Mississippi and you just deleted the "photographs by . . ." Cat? Photo Archives (talk) 16:27, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If the entire history of Mississippi was from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, and zero Mississippi history ever came from anywhere else, then the History of Mississippi would be a subcategory of "Mississippi Department of Archives and History" as you made it. However this is clearly not the case. "Mississippi Department of Archives and History" is reasonable to have as a subcategory of "History of Mississippi", but not the reverse. (Much like Mississippi is in the United States, but not all of the United States is in Mississippi.) Follow? Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 16:51, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, that makes sense. There are probably hundreds of their/these uncategorized images. Is there a better way of bulk moving to a category? Thanks Photo Archives (talk) 16:54, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Information on photos[edit]

I see you editing photos such as File:Lisso and Dreyfus homes, 310 and 312 N. Commerce Street (15281728709).jpg. Perhaps you know something about these photos? Unfortunately the Flickr sources and the links in the photo captions are gone. We don't know when the photos were taken, nor what part of Mississippi. If you know for example what city or town is shown, or what year or decade the photo is from, it would be very helpful to add that info and make the photos more useful. Thanks for your attention. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 16:54, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I am new at all this. I was going to work chronologically. Categorize images - check existing categories and move to them - find same on other Mississippi pages - create new categories and place in "History of" and move them there. Photo Archives (talk) 16:57, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright status of some of your uploads[edit]

Hi there. I came across some of your uploads, such as File:Cathy-Inculet UWO Law Degree London 01.jpg and others in Category:Catherine Inculet. For these photos, you indicated that the photographer is unknown, but the file is released as CC-BY-SA-4.0. It's likely these files will be deleted unless you can provide authorship information or provide proof you can release those photos under that licence. If the photographer is dead and one of their heirs releases the photo(s), you can use {{PD-heirs}}. Otherwise, please see the Commons:Policies and guidelines (and yes, they can be convoluted at times) and Commons:Copyright rules; the latter states that for unknown photographer, assume copyright 50 years after the photograph was taken (so a photo taken in 1984 would become public domain on 1 January 2035). If you have questions, please use the Copyright village pump. Mindmatrix 18:05, 5 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I own the slides and negs. I was in her Will to have these and all of her Fonds and photos. The photographer was probably a family member but I wasn't sure as people sometimes ask others to photograph them at graduations. All three people are dead. I was Cathy's fiance so I could use the heirs link I guess. ̴̴̴ Photo Archives (talk) 18:22, 5 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In that case, {{PD-heirs}} will probably be the right choice, but you should verify at the Copyright village pump to ensure the files won't be deleted. They'll likely provide better guidance for you. Mindmatrix 23:16, 5 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks, I'll let it go and redo something later. ̴̴ Photo Archives (talk) 15:21, 6 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Categories again...[edit]

Hi @Photo Archives, i think it's wrong to make the category All media needing categories as of 2016 a subcategory of Photographs by Thomas Woodtli. I'm not sure about the benefit of such a category structure. Not all of Thomas Woodtli's pics are uncategorized, and not all of the media below All media needing categories as of 2016 is created by him. This, the category structure is IMHO wrong. You should think about reverting your modifications.

Additionally, IMHO there's no need to create another Category Photographs by Thomas Woodtli page 2. If you want to collect a subset of Thomas Woodtli's photographs, the category name should reflect the scope of that subset. Currently, it doesn't.

Please feel free to ask if you're unsure about handling categories on Commons. Have a nice day! Fl.schmitt (talk) 10:30, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Oh No, it was a click of the mouse mistake which i soon found and placed them back in the original Cat. I hope it is corrected I have been away for a few days. About the Page 2. When I tried to put his uncategorized images in his regular Category, they didn't show up on the image file Cat list at the bottom. There was a "Hidden Category" listed tho? The images still remained in media needing categories as of 2021 It was the only way I found to clear the 1000 images? What should I do now? Photo Archives (talk) 14:43, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
OK thanks again, i just went to his main page and removed the Cat needing Cat mistake my mouse made. They must have been on both pages including "page 2" Hope this clears it all up. I am new at it and if I have a question I will let yo know. Photo Archives (talk) 14:49, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Photo Archives - looks fine now, thanks a lot! Fl.schmitt (talk) 19:05, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Are going to create this new category?[edit]

There are files you placed into: Category:Rank insignia of Belgian gendarmerie (1970-2001)s.

Those files only have red-color categories (categories that have not yet been created). These files were in "media needing categorization." However, these files are still "uncategorized," because you did not add any existing categories. There are relevant categories for these files.

Can you add some categories to these files. -- Ooligan (talk) 19:42, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of 'Uncategorized' categories[edit]

Hi there. I noticed that for files such as File:Newfoundland and Nova Scotia 2011 (5877656372).jpg, you've removed the 'Uncategorized' category (in this case, Category:Uncategorized images of Newfoundland and Labrador) while only adding a date-specific category (in this case, Category:2011 in Newfoundland and Labrador). While the latter is useful, it's secondary to the subject of the photo which would warrant a location- or object-related category. In cases like these, please leave the 'Uncategorized' category even after adding the date category, as this ensures someone else can find and categorize these files. (For example, to do this for File:NL 2010-04-22 15-50-36 (4545096346).jpg.) As it stands, many of those files from which you've removed the 'Uncategorized' categories are now stranded in the date categories, making it much more difficult to sort them properly. Mindmatrix 23:55, 13 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi and thanks. My strategy is to go back to these date et al places and do a more thourough categorizing as I have done with others. I know Newfoundland and was actually going back today to relacate many of the files. I also thought that getting them, initially, out of the Uncategorized section and putting them into a Date related Cat, they would be seen more and someone else may have the same idea I had, re-labelling. I didn't think they would be stranded? I like looking through these obscure Cat's someone else set up to find interesting photos. Originally when I began, I would have never thought there was a Un-Cat Cat. Hope this helps and I will leave them as you suggested.. Sorry for the confusion, but it will get done eventually. Photo Archives (talk) 15:42, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I went back and linked many of the Newfoundland images and will continue to update the Cat. Thanks for letting me know. Photo Archives (talk) 14:15, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Categories[edit]

Hi. Could you please put in more effort when creating new categories, or refrain to do so? Guidelines are here: Commons:Categories#Creating a new category. Categories should themselves be well named and have categories to insert them in the category tree. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 18:37, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ok thanks. I thought I was digging deeper into each general category. Thanks for the link and apologies. Photo Archives (talk) 18:39, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Please go back to the categories you've already created and improve categorization. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 18:40, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok I will. Thanks again. Photo Archives (talk) 18:41, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
One thing that has helped is Google translate for foreign Cat's. Maybe I should leave them but it is pretty good at its translations. Photo Archives (talk) 18:40, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Categories should have a name in English, not in a foreign language. See Commons:Categories#Category names. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 18:44, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I was wondering about that in light of the fact that even though English is almost everyone's second language, I (guess i falsly assumed) thought searchers in that country would read the titles better. I will try and go back and relable the foreign Cat's. Thanks for the link. Photo Archives (talk) 14:17, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
"English is almost everyone's second language" This is true (and also for me). However English is a de-facto working language for most of the world which is why it is preferred to create categories with English names. Feel free to leave the category with the name in the "foreign" language as a category redirect. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 15:26, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
OK but don't know the coding for redirect? Photo Archives (talk) 15:27, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Categorization[edit]

Hi. Please pay attention to the following:

  • Try to find existing categories before creating new ones.
  • Add more specific categories to the new categories. As a rule of thumb (my own), I like to add at least 2 categories to each category to make sure that it is easily found.
  • Avoid adding COM:OVERCAT.

Cryptic-waveform (talk) 17:38, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have two commons pages going at the same time, one I do an extra search of the name or a Cat search if i find one. On ocassion someone else has found an (to me) obscure Cat and it was the one I should have used. I just tried to look at it all but miss them. I try to add more but you are correct I should be doing it more often. Thanks again. The uncategorized categories and uncategorized media are huge. These uploaders should not have been allowed to upload to empty categories in the first place. I don't know how they did it because I get notices all the time when I upload. Thx. Photo Archives (talk) 17:45, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I applaud your enthusiasm to remove the uncategorized label however no categorization is sometimes better than bad categorization. Please focus on quality rather than quantity. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 17:47, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Please review Category:Kayutanam INS complex.. What is this category about and do all images fit in this category? Cryptic-waveform (talk) 18:22, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ah yes, going by google translate, i will go back and Cat them individually Photo Archives (talk) 18:25, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Categorization looks better now. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 19:06, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Expanding on "Try to find existing categories before creating new ones", please try to avoid creating categories for single files (or less than a handful) like Category:Motoiwase Benten Pond, but simply place them in a higher-level category. Having just one file in a category defeats a category's purpose of grouping similar files. --HyperGaruda (talk) 19:03, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, good idea, my problem was a larger group all in Japanese and i wrongly assumed they were related. Point taken, thanks Photo Archives (talk) 18:36, 29 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Oh haha and that's the only one i didn't translate. Too many to just put in the main Cat so i used their heading. I will find another relevant Cat, thanks Photo Archives (talk) 19:38, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Copy-pasting category names from the descriptions is not ideal. A little thought should be given to create category names that are readable and integrate well with other existing categories. Category:2020_Conferința_de_presă_a_Grupului_parlamentar_Pro_Moldova has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Book title translations[edit]

Hi Photo Archives. Thanks for helping improve the categorization. For book titles, I don't feel like my recommendation to stick to titles in English applies. Commons:Categories#Category names doesn't quite address the question of translating book titles but leaves some room to keep titles in the original language. I personally like the pattern "<original title> (<publication year>)". Cryptic-waveform (talk) 14:35, 10 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

My opinion exactly. People from a certain country know the titles in their language, thus they should be left that way. I will fininsh the one I am doing and stop with book translations. Should I be the one to remove the Cat Watch after I have done a proper research and updating? Photo Archives (talk) 14:38, 10 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Great. I would rather you leave {{Check categories}} be. I or another contributor will double-check and remove the banner. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 14:48, 10 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Avocado C.D. Uruapan kit[edit]

I see kits in there that are not from Mexico? How did you decide which pictures to include? Cryptic-waveform (talk) 15:18, 10 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I remember They were all together in one page on Uncategorized Cat or Media and i followed the Spanish? I did another search and found Mexico. I wil look at it again Photo Archives (talk) 15:21, 10 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok I see now, they are in Spanish but representative of other clubs and cities and one from Spain. Is it Kosher to put them back in Uncategorized where they came from LOL? I would have to place each individual kit in so many different areas. I will bookmark it. Photo Archives (talk) 15:25, 10 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, it's fine to undo your changes if you want. Please pay more attention bulk-categorizing. There have been several instances where you're grouping pictures without relation to each other. The three changes I just undid (you should have seen notifications) were for a similar issue. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 17:28, 10 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Claxton Ray Photography[edit]

I removed your adding Category:Claxton Ray Photography to Category:Category:Camp Claiborne. Unless every image of Camp Claiborne is by that photographer, the Camp should not be a subcategory of them. If lots (but not all) images of Camp Claiborne were by them, you could create a category for that intersection, like "Category:Photographs of Camp Claiborne by Claxton Ray Photography" or something similar. This is the store in Oklahoma. I checked that the picture of the front matches the picture of the store found online. And all the other pictures are taken by the same user on the same day. A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Connie MacElwee.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

File:CPR Colborne St 06.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Thanks for uploading File:Kudlu Arctic Char.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Kudlu Arctic Char.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Pay attention to copyright
File:Winter Garden Cemetery 9.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Calçotades[edit]

Why is Category:Calçotades in Category:Culture of Valls rather than the more general Category:Culture of Catalonia? Are calçotades somehow more tied to Valls than to Catalonia in general? - Jmabel ! talk 06:36, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
