Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics)

Please use SVG Thank you for uploading some images! Did you know that Wikimedia Commons recommends the SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) format for certain types of images? Scalable Vector Graphics are designed to look appropriate at any scale, and SVG images are easier to modify and translate, helping Wikimedia to distribute knowledge to all of the world. A lot of modern programs support SVG export. If you encountered problems or have questions, don't hesitate to ask me, a member of the Graphic Lab, or the Graphics village pump. Uploading images in SVG format isn't mandatory, but it would help. (To avoid any misunderstandings, please don't just put raster images into an SVG container as embedded raster.) Appeal reply

You stated that that my "intention to return to editing in a topic area where you've previously had difficulty was a matter of concern" but I primarily intend to add new pages, I have had little content disputes as I don't make many edits to existing articles. I think it is extremely unfair that I should be expected to waite yet another year, I have recognized the problems I caused and I won't repeat them, mainly meaning that I need to take more notice of what others recommend and thing more carefully about the things I change. As I stated there are many missing articles on civil parishes and other places that need to be created. I have never in my life been banned from anywhere, so why do I have to be banned from the place most important to me? Were you meaning that I am expected to contribute to an entirely different topic to English geography? Although I might also do some work with the most wanted articles (general) I have little intention to write about anything other than English places. Crouch, Swale (talk) 18:39, 5 April 2016 (UTC)

Did you or ArbCom receive my July 24th Email? I haven't received any messages from ArbCom since July 15th. Protein Request

Hi Opabinia! I was hoping to get your permission to use your protein image for the Drosha Ribonuclease III. Also, since you make images, would it be possible for you to make a Class 1 Ribonuclease III interacting with a dsRNA photo? I want to use it for a page I am working on. @Burgjane15: Of course you can use any of my images! Just so you know, everything on commons is freely licensed, so it can be freely reused without permission as long as it's attributed. (This is automatic if the page you're working on is on Wikipedia.)
