Flag of the Helvetic Republic[edit]
I noticed that you changed the shape of File:Flag of the Helvetic Republic (French).svg a year ago to a square - I wonder what source you used for this change? File:Fahnentraeger helvetik.jpg which was created at the time of the Helvetic Republic seems to depict a (waving) rectangle much wider than high, i.e. more similar to the previous shape. Of course, the current flag of Switzerland is square - but I wasn't under the impression that this is also true for the Flag of the Helvetic Republic. Gestumblindi (talk) 22:49, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
- I agree with you for the painting File:Fahnentraeger helvetik.jpg, but I don't think it is necessarily a reliable source: the flag is waved and the width can look larger by an incorrect perspective effect or it could have been increased intentionally to display the full French word "HELVETIQUE" on the reverse side and the end of the German "REPUBLIK" on the front.
- Actually, I based my change on the photograph File:RÉPUBLİQUE HELVÉTİQUE.jpg, that shows a perfect square!
- The flag itself is exposed at the Swiss National Museum in the Castle of Prangins, near Nyon. You can check by yourself!
- Of course, these years were very chaotic times and many flag versions with different shapes and colors may have existed, but I prefer to trust what I can prove. --Omarcoz (talk) 15:27, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
- File:RÉPUBLİQUE HELVÉTİQUE.jpg certainly is a convincing source and shows that at least one version of the flag was square. Although it's indeed quite likely that the flag was used in various shapes, this makes your version a good approach if there's no indication that the square flag was an exception. Still, maybe we should also make the flag in the wider variant available as an individual file, not just in the file's version history. Gestumblindi (talk) 20:05, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
- The painting File:Fahnentraeger helvetik.jpg is linked from the flag on WikiCommons and available to people who want more information. Making too many files with poor sources would only be confusing and hazardous.
- The file File:Helvetische Rep (Variante).gif with an alternate text already exists, but no one could indicate a reliable source, so far… --Omarcoz (talk) 22:43, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
Bonjour,
