Happy Holidays[edit]

Happy Holidays!
G'day, just a quick greeting wishing you and your family happy holidays and all the best for 2014. And of course, a big thank you for putting a leg up by doing what you do on Commons, and helping to make it the fantastic project that it is. Greetings from a warm west coast of Aussie. russavia (talk) 01:45, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the talk page move[edit]

Don't know what I was doing there. [1] --MichaelMaggs (talk) 18:06, 31 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@MichaelMaggs: No worries. I took the liberty to delete the redirect for the talk page since we don't really need it; I left the one in the main namespace be because you already posted the link on Wikimedia-l. And thank you for your work on this, it is appreciated. odder (talk) 18:24, 31 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Good plan. Thanks. --MichaelMaggs (talk) 11:40, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Still under copyright[edit]

Hi, are you sure that File:Gustav Vigeland - monument in Frogner Park.jpg has come out of copyright? Vigeland's sculptures are now free, yes, but this is a statue of Vigeland, presumably not by him. --Avenue (talk) 03:18, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure about this at all. I think I'll nominate it for deletion—or do you think I should delete it straight away? odder (talk) 11:11, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I went ahead with the second option and re-deleted the file. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, @Avenue :-) odder (talk) 11:22, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for re-deleting it. That does seem the best approach here. --Avenue (talk) 11:38, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Armenian Wiktionary[edit]

You can change this picture and put this in its place. --Vadgt (talk) 11:24, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Vadgt: I am, indeed, technically able to. But why do you think I should do that? Has there been any discussion in the Armenian Wiktionary community requesting a change of the logo? As far I remember, the logo was changed as part of bug #43240, and @Nemo requested comments from your community on this page. I was only responsible for actually drawing the logo, and it happened more than a year ago, so I don't remember the case too much, but I'm sure Nemo can provide with more details. odder (talk) 11:52, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I do not discussed him that no one except me is that project. --Vadgt (talk) 12:24, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Well of course the editing context. --Vadgt (talk) 12:28, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, I don't understand what you're trying to say. Is this supposed to mean that you've been the only editor on the Armenian Wiktionary for more than a year (that's when the logo was changed) and no one consulted you about the new logo? As I said, I don't remember the details, so you'd have to discuss this with Nemo. odder (talk) 12:59, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed the thing had been advertised locally, with [2] [3] [4]. Vadgt, can you please link us to consensus/discussion for the new logo? I don't see any discussion or notice in any page. --Nemo 13:10, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This is exactly what I wanted to say. --Vadgt (talk) 02:44, 2 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

NIK[edit]

W ciągu ostatnich miesięcy niestety go nie miałem. Planuję wysłać oficjalne, "papierowe" pismo, i to w takiej formie, żeby NIK nie miała pola ani do zbycia obywatela, ani do kontynuowania korespondencji. 22:24, 2 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Photo challenge[edit]

All the sections are empty. Can you fix? -- Colin (talk) 20:51, 6 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Colin: Not really; each time I try to save the page (even after removing the included sub-pages), I'm being thrown a useless non–MediaWiki error. There is currently some troubleshooting going on on IRC, I'm sure the page will be fixed soon (or else a Bugzilla bug will be filed to let the developers know). odder (talk) 20:54, 6 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I think I fixed it. You removed the contents inside the sections. I don't understand the translate stuff. I'd like to move the "open for voting" section to before the "open for submitting" but the translate stuff has numbers that I think might break. -- Colin (talk) 20:57, 6 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Colin: The page works okay, but as a translation administrator, I still cannot mark the updated version for translation due to the error I'm seeing. odder (talk) 20:59, 6 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Are you still getting the error? I got an error too why I tried to view a previous version to see what it used to contain. The main priority for translation is I suppose the voting rules on each voting page. If things can be re-organised to make translation easier then please advice. But we need to be careful not to break the page while it is being actively used for voting and submission -- I've made too many mistakes today myself. The whole challenge forum is quite active in terms of changing text/rules as we are just starting out and experimenting. I guess this makes translation a moving goal. -- Colin (talk) 21:16, 6 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Colin: Yes, and it's existing on various other pages using the Translate extension, and is quite complicated. Wikimedia Foundation operations team are already on it and trying to fix the bug. odder (talk) 22:00, 6 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
See my talk page. I made a mistake trying to re-order the sections. I still would like voting to come before new-submissions (otherwise it gets lost at the bottom of a big gallery) but this needs to be done by someone who knows what they are doing. I think ultimately we will want more automation for voting/submission like WLM and POTY so we need to bear in mind these pages are temporary and in-flux when considering translation effort. -- Colin (talk) 23:11, 6 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Valued Image Promotion[edit]

Your nomination has been reviewed and promoted
Congratulations! The image you nominated was reviewed and has now been promoted as a valued image. It is considered to be the most valued image on Commons within the scope:
Macaca nigra (Celebes crested macaque) self-portrait.
If you would like to nominate another image, please do so at Valued images candidates.
Wow, that's great, thanks! odder (talk) 17:20, 8 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Will you be my BFF[edit]

As the picturings show, Australia make much lovings of Poland. Would you gib me sign that you can into BFF plox. russavia (talk) 16:19, 8 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You seem to have gotten the colours wrong, @Russavia. On the Polish flag, the red stripe is on the bottom — your picture represents the flag of Indonesia. I'm glad you like Poland, though — we are, in general, a nice country. odder (talk) 16:26, 8 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Odder, don't trust him, he'll just use you and then dump you. Demand a legal contract and ensure no revocation is possible in the legislation of choice. (Poland should be fine for that, right?) --Nemo 16:32, 8 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No Polen, that not being of Indonesia, that is of a Poland. Look, here's a Poland that Germany made earlier. Beside, we all know everything in Poland of upside down. It's true, see!!. russavia (talk) 17:33, 8 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

English/Polish translations[edit]

Dear Odder, I am reaching out to you to thank you for your help translating the 'Thank you letter' from Sue Gardner into Polish. This spring we will be focusing on one or two languages per week in order to develop quality translations and appealing fundraising messages that are well adapted to the language/culture where they are being shown. For this purpose, I am looking for dedicated translators who would be interested in helping us translate our English banner text into their own language and also hopefully give us one-to-one feedback and suggestions on alternative versions. Would you be interested in helping me out with this for the Polish language? If so, could I contact you be email? Thank you very much for your valuable support. Kind regards, Jrobell (talk) 10:54, 10 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Jrobell: Thank you for your kind words; it was my pleasure to translate Sue's letter! I would be thrilled to help you with your work, and you're more than welcome to contact me by e-mail. Looking forward to hearing from you, odder (talk) 13:43, 10 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Sporti: It covers all pictures from the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup competitions in Zakopane between 2002–2013 taken by Tadeusz Mieczyński (the editor of Skijumping.pl). odder (talk) 09:56, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks, so for example this would be ok? --Sporti (talk) 11:33, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Sporti: Yes, that picture would be just fine. odder (talk) 11:39, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Concerning IP post[edit]

Hi Tomasz. Can you take a look at this? It contains accusations of illegal activity and a legal threat. I hid the revision and blocked the IP for 24hrs. I'm not sure if this needs to be oversighted or if anything else should be done regarding the user he's referring to or the image he linked. INeverCry 04:38, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @INeverCry, I'll reply to you via e-mail in a moment. odder (talk) 07:30, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Witaj.

@Chrumps: Ostatecznie zgłosiłem buga #60604; błąd leży chyba w zachowaniu funkcji {{#expr:}}, a nie {{#formatnum:}}. odder (talk) 23:22, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dziękuję...[edit]

...za zmianę moich uprawnień. Pozdrawiam. Mboro (talk) 18:12, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary undeletions concerning the Plenarsaal[edit]

Hey odder, thanks a lot for the execution of the undeletions. I'd really appreciate you to

By doing this, the case should be able to be closed. Thanks again, Yellowcard (talk) 15:01, 2 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Yellowcard: all done :-) Thank you for your help in getting this sorted out! odder (talk) 15:28, 2 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:2014-01-25 President Obama's Weekly Address.webm. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

No required license templates were detected at this file page. Please correct it, or if you have any questions please contact me on my talk page. Yours sincerely, Jarekt (talk) 13:24, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Jarekt: Thanks for the notification. I added the licensing tag back; I think my mouse must have flickered when I tried to add a link to the transcript made available by the White House and I removed the tag by mistake. odder (talk) 14:01, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
A lot of people are uploading (daily) images with no license. Check User:Jarekt/a for last few days. A lot of them seem to be new, so they must be missing some step during the upload. I either do not see much files with no license from experienced users or they do not mention it. But I often wonder how come newbes are able upload file without license and there is no automatic tagging. Some years ago I added {{License template tag}} to all recognized license templates and now it is easy to spot images without them: user:YiFeiBot does occasional database scans and finds all the images without licenses (mostly cases where images loose a license somehow) and I occasionally use CatScan2 to find new uploads without licenses. But we are still in the mode of detecting issues and informing users about it (or fixing it for old uploads). Actually today I proposed Commons_talk:Abuse_filter#I_would_like_to_develop_a_filter_detecting_license_template_removal to deal with images loosing a licenses. We should probably improve upload tools to prevent new uploads without license. --Jarekt (talk) 14:31, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Jarekt: My first answer was misleading, so apologies for that. That file doesn't qualify as an upload without a license (because I removed the tag by mistake in a later edit), but I agree with your idea of setting up an abuse filter disallowing total removal of licensing tags (or perhaps only warning users of what they are about to do). In most cases (all?), just like in mine, that's either a mistake or a vandalism, and shouldn't be happening at all.

As for your suggestion to improve our upload tools, the UploadWizard, at least, already prohibits uploads without a licensing tag, and in case people choose the "I don't know" option, it tags them as missing license. I have never tried uploading a file with Commonist or Vicuna without a licensing tag, so I can't tell how those tools behave in situations like this; even so, those tools are unlikely to be used by new users and any errors are likely to be made by mistake. odder (talk) 14:43, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

User rights[edit]

Hello Odder, as I saw you changed my user rights into "autopatrolled". Is this due to my changes with the templates? --Toffel (talk) 20:59, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Toffel: No, it's due to your involvement in Wikimedia Commons as a whole. You have made almost a thousand edits on this project, have registered back in 2006 (!) and I think it's due time that your edits are marked as autopatrolled here. Please note that this does not have any influence over your contributions—it's only a sign to administrators and patrollers that you are an experienced editor and that your edits need not be checked. Thanks again for your involvement with Commons! odder (talk) 21:09, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks. :-) --Toffel (talk) 21:29, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations & Celebrations[edit]

Hello Odder!

I would like to congratulate you and wish you to achieve success and satisfaction as a bureaucrat on Commons, your beloved project.

I wanted to give you a virtual glass of champagne, but after watching this film [6], I promised myself to never promote alcohol drinks to anyone in any way. So you receive a freshly baked virtual croissant with rose hip jam and a cup of hot chocolate for tomorrow breakfast to start your first day as a bureaucrat with a full stomach:-)

Isn't Commons hosting all these beautiful pictures incredible?

As for me, my "adventure" on Commons is over and like a bird I'll fly away. --Seleucidis (talk) 21:19, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

80.171.35.18 16:07, 15 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like a revision hide of yours has been undone in this image being re-uploaded with her face visible today. INeverCry 00:59, 17 February 2014 (UTC)]][reply]

Now that's an interesting development. I wonder why @Hazhk decided it would be such a good idea to undo an admin action and restore the first version of the picture. Thanks for alerting me to this, @INeverCry. odder (talk) 09:29, 17 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I decided it would be such a good idea because I can see no justification for blurring the face. There is nothing on the file's talk page, so it's not as if I challenged any explanation or reasoning. If the worry is about personality rights, well, there's a large template on the file page, "The use of depictions of living or deceased persons may be restricted by laws regarding personality rights ... please ensure that the intended use does not infringe any personality rights under applicable laws." That seems appropriate to me. But why would there by a worry? The original file isn't altered in any way and if there's really any reason to assume that the person depicted wouldn't want their face visible then we should remove the file entirely, because clearly there would be concerns about the source. -- Hazhk (talk) 13:23, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I agree and think those redirects are much needed. Can you also move these 3 if you can? Jaqeli (talk) 12:40, 20 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Jaqeli: I renamed Category:Caucasian Iberia, but I'm not sure about the other two categories. As far as I see, all Georgian nobility families are referred to by their names, and not as House of X. As for Category:Georgian alphabet, we have en:Georgian alphabet, and I think we should stay consistent with it. odder (talk) 18:06, 20 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Please see House of Mukhrani. Mukhran-Batoni is indeed a mistake which is just a title not a name of this noble family and it should be moved for sure. As for the Georgian alphabet you're right. It should be in harmony with the English wikipedia in this case. Jaqeli (talk) 19:40, 20 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Jaqeli: Thanks for the link. I'm moving Category:Mukhran-Batoni; it should be finished soon. odder (talk) 20:43, 20 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I think in this case it is better to delete the "Mukhran-Batoni" category instead of redirecting it as it is not a name of the noble family but just a title, like Lord, Prince. Jaqeli (talk) 20:49, 20 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The redirect does not hurt anyone, and I think it would be prudent to keep it, at least for some time, in case there are existing links to the old category name. odder (talk) 21:21, 20 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please also move these two if you can? Jaqeli (talk) 10:56, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Jaqeli: Both done. odder (talk) 11:35, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. But why "Maps of the Kingdom of Iberia"? Addition of "the" is not needed at all. Jaqeli (talk) 13:27, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Jaqeli: Google tells me that's the proper grammar form; I don't think it's so important as to require any future changes. odder (talk) 13:46, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've checked also other map categories and you are indeed right. "the" is used in most of them so thank you for correcting me. Jaqeli (talk) 14:06, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Can you move these also? Jaqeli (talk) 22:48, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Is it possible to move them? Jaqeli (talk) 13:38, 22 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Jaqeli: All done. odder (talk) 19:46, 22 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. Do you know by chance if there is any tool which will make it possible to add categories into many multiple images with one click by choosing them in any way? Jaqeli (talk) 19:58, 22 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Jaqeli: You're looking for Cat-a-lot; you can enable it in your preferences. odder (talk) 20:01, 22 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wow. Thank you so much. There are 2 categories that needs to be moved. Would you do it today or better to ask you tomorrow? Jaqeli (talk) 20:13, 22 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Jaqeli: If you'd like me to move some other categories, just ask :-) I'll do that as soon as I can. odder (talk) 20:34, 22 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. Please move these 2 when you can. :) Jaqeli (talk) 20:51, 22 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Jaqeli: Both done. odder (talk) 21:38, 22 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Odder. Jaqeli (talk) 21:51, 22 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Pozdrawiam serdecznie. Seleucidis (talk) 12:50, 22 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Seleucidis: Przesłałem File:Dekselpot met lange lijzen (Rijksmuseum AK-RBK-16254).jpg; jeśli mogłabyś uzupełnić opis w języku niderlandzkim, to byłbym wdzięczny. odder (talk) 13:13, 22 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Uzupełniłam opis w języku niderlandzkim. Dodałam też po polsku i po angielsku. Wielkie dzięki:-) Piękne zdjęcie. Seleucidis (talk) 14:55, 22 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement[edit]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open![edit]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Just a heads up, your bot OdderBot that is/was adding {{Flickr-change-of-license}} tags seems to have failed to check to see if the tag was already present (see File:GrandGeyserYNP.jpg for an example) before adding the tag. —RP88 22:07, 22 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@RP88: Thanks for the heads-up and the revert. I'll have a look at the log after finishing the task and will revert any other misdeeds of the script. odder (talk) 22:12, 22 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@RP88: So it appears that was one of only two errors; I caught the other one (99.6% of effectiveness :-) odder (talk) 23:33, 22 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I was invited and advised to take pictures of Philippine by [11] User:J.smith 19:59, 23 November 2008 (UTC); even if it is not yet too late, I am now taking photos as I travel to different Philippine towns amid the fact that at my age of 60 it is very hard to comprehend Commons laws and rules on editing, but I am trying my best. Cheers.--Judgefloro (talk) 10:11, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"Nowe reguły" wprowadzane przez użytkowników zza Odry cd.[edit]

Dzień dobry ponownie usnąłem wprowadzone przez usera za Odry reverty. Niestety posuwa się on coraz dalej patrz tu: [12].

Zapraszam do dyskusji tamże. odder (talk) 12:13, 24 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Rename[edit]

My account says you renamed me from my current name to TLSuda, but I cannot login to that account, and this account still exists. Any thoughts on why this would be? Thanks in advance. ТимофейЛееСуда (talk) 23:55, 24 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Need help..[edit]

Hi Odder, can you help me delete this file. The user who uploading it keep adding this "fake" maps which he gets from blogspot.com to many articles and this is quite disruptive. He is already been blocked in English Wikipedia due to copyright problem which you can see here. — иz нίpнόp ʜᴇʟᴘ! 13:35, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@иz нίpнόp: I have deleted the file, and blocked the user indefinitely for repeated uploads of copyright violating files. Thank you for bringing this matter to my attention. odder (talk) 16:41, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Odder for your fast response. I hope he will stop doing any disruptive editing by using other anonymous IPs like what he did on the English Wikipedia before. ;) — иz нίpнόp ʜᴇʟᴘ! 20:35, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Technical admin details[edit]

Can you please update Commons:List of administrators and Commons:List of administrators by date to welcome our two new administrators? (Don't really see the sense in those two pages being protected.) Thanks, TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 05:35, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

On second thought maybe we should just delete those two pages altogether and transclude Special:ListUsers/sysop instead, as these user-generated lists tend to grow to become very un-maintainable and difficult to remember to update frequently. Whereas software tricks are automatic and easy to understand, with no maintenance effort at all. TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 05:41, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@TeleComNasSprVen: As far as I am aware, the custom was for the new admins to add themselves to each of these lists. I see Rodhullandemu added himself to Commons:List of administrators and that you updated Commons:List of administrators by date; I did the rest. As for your other idea, its biggest drawback is that automatic lists don't include any information about what languages administrators speak, which is vital information for someone looking for help in their language. odder (talk) 10:07, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

move.[edit]
