Finland location map[edit]

Can you add to map Great Saimaa lake system?--Gamtininkas (talk) 15:33, 31 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm quite busy at the moment so it might take some time. I'll add it. NNW (talk) 22:01, 1 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Done. NNW (talk) 20:42, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Azerbaijan location map[edit]

Can you make a map for Azerbaijan, as you did it for "File:Georgia location map.svg". Thanks in advance

It's planned. It will take some time, I'm very busy right now. NNW (talk) 18:09, 12 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello NNW,

First as usual I would like to thank you Alexk2, Uwe Dedering and everyone that's working on those lovely maps. We've only got left with 5 countries without a standard map (Azerbijan, China, India, Kiribati & Nauru).

As for Quebec map, the coordinates given are incorrect for example the border of Quebec-Labrador-Sea (51.385495 N 57.095947 W) which appears in the map are not in the coordinates bounderies.

thanks, GilCahana (talk) 13:55, 23 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much, you're right. It has to be -56.5 instead of -57.5. India and Azerbaijan are in progress at de:WP, India will come soon, file:Azerbaijan location map.svg is already available but I don't like the way Nagorno-Karabagh is shown so I didn't brought it to he:WP. Btw, some maps in common style are rubbish like the Mali map with a complete wrong projection. That has to be made new. NNW (talk) 17:01, 23 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well I'm not an expert so I don't see nothing wrong in Mali map, I believe you it's wrong. Anyway I know you guys we'll do the job as usual. Btw someone in our WP made a location map for Sinai Peninsula in File:Sinai location map.png by cutting from file:Egypt location map.svg. When you'll have time could you make a proper map for the Peninsula, we have alot of articles using this map. thanks, GilCahana (talk) 17:13, 23 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Was denkst du?MissyWegner 10:18, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
NNW (talk) 11:08, 26 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Derivative of Scotland map[edit]

Akerbeltz (talk) 15:45, 27 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Lithuania map[edit]

Can you add districts to Lithuania location map, because at this year July apskritys will be remove.--Gamtininkas (talk) 18:04, 3 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Of course I will. Is there a special date when the change will come? NNW (talk) 18:31, 3 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Im' sorry for not respond earlier:) 2010 05 01.--Gamtininkas (talk) 13:30, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

:o) NNW (talk) 10:18, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello NNW. Same as usual: can you resize that location map to the following dimensions: from 1055 x 956 px to 1055 x 973 px ? Thanks. Sting (talk) 16:00, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Of course, it's done. NNW (talk)

Bhutan map[edit]

I see you made the Bhutan map File:Bhutan location map.svg which was recently put in the en:Gangkhar Puensum infobox but which I then removed. See en:Talk:Gangkhar_Puensum#Bhutan_or_China.3F and following. Is the problem one of a poorly-defined border, map projection or the coordinates of Gangkhar Puensum, can you tell? This has been a long standing problem in the GP article so I am hoping you can help! Thincat (talk) 09:37, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Here I already gave you an answer :o). I followed an official map of Bhutan. So if even Bhutan doesn't want to have this northern area which cannot be reached without climbing high mountains, I think it's okay that Wikipedia also shows it as a part of China. NNW (talk) 12:43, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, so you did give me an answer! Sorry about that: however, nice to meet you again! Thincat (talk) 10:31, 17 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo NNW,[edit]

Gruß, 紫藤 (talk) 13:46, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Moin!
– 紫藤 (talk) 16:29, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sprich mal Alexrk2 direkt an, vielleicht macht er es nochmal in höherer Auflösung (falls möglich). NNW (talk) 16:40, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nasino[edit]

Mali location map[edit]

I've noticed that you have updated the map of Mali. A beautiful map - an enormous improvement. The previous map was not drawn using a equirectangular projection - I had tried to fiddle the map limits to position the important towns in the south of the country. If you look on my sandbox you will see that your new map agrees with coords from Google earth (as it should!). Aa77zz (talk) 10:42, 22 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That was my intent. :o) But I just saw that I forgot the boundary between Niger and Benin. Update is coming soon. NNW (talk) 10:49, 22 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Alerted to possible omissions... I notice that you've omitted the very short line marking the boundary between Mauritania and Senegal that follows the Senegal River on the extreme left hand side of your map. Aa77zz (talk) 14:10, 22 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, it's corrected now. NNW (talk) 14:52, 22 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re: United States National Imagery and Mapping Agency data[edit]

Hi, I noticed in many of your work that you used United States National Imagery and Mapping Agency data. I tried going to their (now the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency) website to find out more, but could not find it. Where did you get the data? Jappalang (talk) 07:12, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. They sent it to me some years ago with four CDs. Perhaps you should try this link. NNW (talk) 09:07, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you[edit]

Your Saudi Arabia map was very helpful in my recent essay - Thank you for posting it!

Canadian Territories[edit]

Great work on the Canadian provinces maps. I used them to help me make excellent "flag-maps", which you can see here: User:Svgalbertian#Flag_maps_of_Canada. Any chance of getting the same maps for the Canadian territories? Thanks again. --Svgalbertian (talk) 22:24, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much. Right now I'm too busy in real life to create those maps but there is a request at French map lab to do this, too, so there might be someone doing it for me in the meanwhile. NNW (talk) 07:13, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Quick question, what type of software do you use to make these maps? I am interested in making provincial border maps using North America Albers Equal Area Conic projection (used by the Province of British Columbia) or the Lambert Conformal Conic (used by the The Atlas of Canada).--Svgalbertian (talk) 17:27, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's a quite old version of FreeHand and an extension called MAPublisher for the import of GIS data. NNW (talk) 13:07, 30 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Wild Coast[edit]

Hi ! I have stumbled across your maps and I'm in the process of making some historical maps for Wikipedia. I have alreay used your Brazilian location map for this 1644 New Holland map (Dutch Brazil).

thumbs
thumbs

I'm now looking on doing a Wild Coast 1664 map (Guyana, Suriname, French Guyana). I do not have the knowledge to do topographic or hydrographic maps. If you had the time, could you please consider making an empty topographic/hydrographic map of the Guyanas following that model on the right?

thumbs
thumbs

On this last one, I had collaborated with Sémhur and it ended as a 1664 map : http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fichier:1664AmeriqueNord.jpg. But this user doesn't have the time for Wikipedia anymore. The Guyanas do NOT have any such maps as we speak on Commons, so it would be a first. I know you guys usually use different geo-locating system so I'm giving you the coordinates of the canvas of the map if you chose to make it : top limit : 12N, left limit : 62.53W, right limit : 50.53W, bottom limit : 1N. If you want to see my main profile, it is here : http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utilisateur:Ocre Thank you very much sir, --Ocre (talk) 05:38, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I'm really busy in real life right now, so it's impossible for me to do this. Did you bring this demand already to fr:Wikipédia:Atelier graphique/Cartes? I think this will be the fastest way to get that map. Best regards, NNW (talk) 16:02, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I did, but I thought asking directly to the author of so much great maps would be better :) --Ocre (talk) 13:56, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Kashmir map misleading[edit]

Regarding File:India Jammu and Kashmir location map.svg, the map is misleading for Indians and others which doesn't mark actual ground position. Only 40% of the white map is under indian jurisdiction, see en:Jammu and Kashmir, en:Lin of Control and File:Pakistan location map.svg. Pakistan map would have been white for more if its claim of whole of Jammu and Kashmir were made white instead of gray in File:Pakistan location map.svg. So more area is needed to be grayed, though the dotted lines may be kept as it is since India claims whole territory. So please gray en:Azad Kashmir, en:Gilgit-Baltistan and en:Aksai Chin that are not under Indian control for more than 50 years, but this map is used in "Indian jurisdiction" template. Noted trip3 (talk) 07:21, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's SVG, it's easy to edit. If you want to have a different map you might do it yourself and upload it with a different name. But this map will stay as it is. There has already been a discussion about this map, I won't have another one. NNW (talk) 16:05, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Good if you point me to the discussion regarding this. It is used widely for Indian articles, that is a blunt answer from you. Noted trip3 (talk) 07:00, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Nevermind, the yellow colour wasn't visible in my monitor, I am really sorry. So it looked same to be for both side of en:LoC. Now map is ok, but still one thing missing. That there is no difference between Indian controlled en:Himachal Pradesh to the south and pakistan controlled en:PoK to the northwest. This issue is minor though, correct it if you feel like. Noted trip3 (talk) 14:59, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

North Sea[edit]

Hello NNW,

We haven't talk for a while, well we had a request at the Hebrew Wikipedia for a location map of the North Sea. Could you please make one?

Anyway just to let you know I'm working on a project for the hebrew location map template for detailed maps, I've already made the function, now the hard work is to impliment it to all the maps. I hope I'll start somewhere in July after I'll finish my exams. GilCahana (talk) 15:51, 13 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Good luck with it! It might take some time with the location map but I will do it as soon as possible. NNW (talk) 19:08, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the quick response, it's a pleasure working with you. GilCahana (talk) 09:04, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Can you reduce the width of File:Macedonia_location_map.svg to 1368 px to get a better proportion? Sting (talk) 14:53, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. It's done. NNW (talk) 10:02, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Sting (talk) 12:00, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't suppose you have a map of the continental US down to the county subdivision? I notice we have all territories and 50 states down to the county level, and I would find a county level map useful. As a note, I've made a huge amount of derivatives for my maps on en.wikipedia. Magog the Ogre (talk) 18:35, 12 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Here you can download county data for single states or the whole US. With this you can make any map you like: complete USA, parts of it or with different projections. NNW (talk) 19:04, 12 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any good software to render that into svg? I prefer Linux, although I run Windows on a virtual machine so I can use that too. Magog the Ogre (talk) 21:34, 12 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I fear I'm no help in this, I work with a Mac. NNW (talk) 07:44, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Do you know anything for Mac? The shp2pgsql library doesn't seem to recognize shape type MULTIPOLYGON, so I can't use that method. And it would be a ridiculous piece of work to have to write my *own* software for this. Magog the Ogre (talk) 00:16, 14 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You can write me a Wiki mail then I'll send you a zipped SVG file of the county boundaries. It is in an equirectangular projection and has got 4 MB. Okay for you? NNW (talk) 07:18, 14 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Did you get the email (I have a feeling it might not have sent)? Magog the Ogre (talk) 22:21, 16 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I got your email and tried three times to sent you the SVG but all mails came back with the remark "Mailbox unavailable/command rejected for policy reasons/no access". After that I simply wrote an email to tell you that and this one didn't come back so I thought that it reached you. Perhaps your mailbox rejects 4 MB? NNW (talk) 13:55, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oh I remember now; I couldn't change my email a while back due to a mediawiki issue. Go ahead and resend. Magog the Ogre (talk) 20:33, 18 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I sent it and it didn't come back until now. NNW (talk) 09:29, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I notified you with my new email, ugh, sorry. Magog the Ogre (talk) 23:52, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I sent it to the second address, too. NNW (talk) 17:50, 21 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oh heck it got spam filtered, no wonder. I thought you were just ignoring me ;) Magog the Ogre (talk) 20:19, 23 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

So you got the file and could open it? NNW (talk) 18:56, 25 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I could open it, but I'm still trying to figure out how to tinker with it so I can get the proper coordinate system. Magog the Ogre (talk) 22:40, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello NNW,

I ran some test using location map template and found out that the pointer is located about 5km north of the real location, see for example Wedge Island 35.15753 S 136.468735 E GilCahana (talk) 22:10, 16 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, my mistake. I've put the borders of the map wrong. Fixed and perfect. GilCahana (talk) 09:43, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mediterranean Sea[edit]

Hello NNW,

Can you make a map for Mediterranean Sea? It would be helpful for historical articles for Europe. Thank you in advance. -- ChongDae (talk) 17:00, 27 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, a location map? Other maps can be found here. NNW (talk) 18:26, 27 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. I mean a location map with coordinates (like North sea map). Thank you. -- ChongDae (talk) 03:30, 28 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's available now. NNW (talk) 09:06, 8 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. -- ChongDae (talk) 04:56, 9 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Armenia location map.svg[edit]

Hello NNW.

See site Azerbaycan Prezident's [1], and see site Armenian Prezident's [2].6AND5 (talk) 21:56, 28 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! These maps are much to imprecise to see anything as small as these exklaves. And using the Armenian National Atlas you will even get completely different boundaries. So who is correct: the Armenian president or his National Atlas?
  • en:Barxudarlı: It is completely surrounded by Armenia and has been controlled by it since the Nagorno-Karabakh War. That means: officially still part of Azerbaijan.
  • en:Yuxarı Əskipara: The exclave is surrounded by Armenia and has been controlled by it since the Nagorno-Karabakh War. That means: officially still part of Azerbaijan.
  • en:Karki, Azerbaijan: It is part of the Sadarak Rayon and is completely surrounded by Armenia - therefore making it also an enclave - and has been controlled by Armenia since the Nagorno-Karabakh War in May 1992. That means: officially still part of Azerbaijan.
No treaty concerning an exchange of villages to be found. Pre-war boundaries are the official boundaries and that is what this map shows. If you want to change anything, show me the official treaties. NNW (talk) 10:56, 29 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

SDL[edit]

fyi[edit]

Did you notice that http://www.aquarius.geomar.de/omc/ no longer supports the online map generation tool?

Darn, I used it a lot. Several years ago I tried downloading a kit they had, to generate maps on your own computer. But it was hard to install, and I never finished installing it. That was several computers ago, and I am sure I can't find the archive.

If you come across an alternate package, I'd appreciate a heads-up. I'll do likewise.

Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 14:38, 15 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't know that tool so I cannot miss it. :-( Most Wikipedians I know use en:Generic Mapping Tools but I heard it's not that easy to handle, either. But the results can be great if you use it for creating the relief and do the rest in a graphic vector program. NNW (talk) 14:45, 15 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Baltic Sea map[edit]

Hello NNW,

Once again another request, can you make a Baltic Sea location map? thanks, GilCahana (talk) 08:50, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I'll have to see if I can find the sea borders somewhere but if not then I'll do it without them. It may take some time. NNW (talk) 11:12, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, take your time. Also I had a request for the English Channel map. GilCahana (talk) 13:56, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Another question (finally not a request). I'm about to add German states templates and I wonder why North Rhine-Westphalia's file name is different? GilCahana (talk) 11:22, 28 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately the name scheme of location maps was only used for countries (and even here there are exceptions). I think User:TUBS didn't want to privilege any version as "the main version". All the German länder maps are also missing a leading "Germany". And the French and Russian maps have a different name scheme, too. Like the French mapmakers prefer orange in their maps where German and Russians use a light gray. And some relief versions are JPG, some are PNG. Somehow it didn't work to prevent those differences but on the other hand no one is really bothered about it and it is kept the way it is. Once the maps are inserted in their templates no one is interested in the file names. That's easier than long cross-wiki discussions with no Commons sysop included who could easily transfer the files to a consistent name scheme. NNW (talk) 12:25, 28 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You revert my map without an ended discussion and you think I would give you tips about reverting? That's hilarious. NNW (talk) 19:44, 30 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, in inkscape, how do I cut out a specific part of an image that I want to create as its own image? --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 16:15, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Locator map of Bulgaria[edit]

Hi NordNordWest, I made this map file:Bulgaria’s Planning Regions (2009).svg that shows the current boundaries of districts and municipalities in Bulgaria. So I am not map expert. Can I ask you based on my map to improve yours File:Bulgaria location map.svg? Thanks in advance --Пакко (talk) 22:09, 2 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Yes, of course. Great work! Regards, NNW (talk) 11:24, 3 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, if you have questions just write me. Best regards --Пакко (talk) 11:47, 3 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for updating of the map. I have plans to make svg location maps of Bulgarian provinces with the municipalities, but I don't know how to set geographic limits of the maps. Could you help me? --Пакко (talk) 12:49, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Rivers in Victoria and generating maps[edit]

Hello... Maybe it's a dumb question, but why does File:Australia_Victoria_location_map.svg contain no rivers inside Victoria? Also, is it possible to generate my own maps with different information/format for my own purpose using whatever it is that you've used to create this map? Thanks! Cassowary (talk) 16:49, 11 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, so I put on my deutschverstehenden hat and discovered GMT, which answers the second question, and it seems that the lack of rivers is because GSHHS doesn't contain any rivers in Victoria (except for a tiny irrelevant creek that branches from the murray near its source). But how about the datasource for the local government boundaries within Victoria? Was that generated with GMT from a datasource or copied in manually in an svg editor? and if so, can I get that datasource? Thanks! Cassowary (talk) 13:23, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hello! I don't work with GMT, I used some graphic applications (FreeHand, Illustrator) and the PDF of Victoria that is named in the file description [3]. That's the source of the boundaries but they are simplified manually. I intended that all location maps of Australia should show nearly the same frequency of rivers. As the other states are bigger I only chose the longest rivers. That led to a Victoria map with only few rivers. On the other hand I thought all that Local Government Areas would bring enough lines into the map. All I could give you are the boundaries and rivers in this SVG, so you can just download the location map. Regards, NNW (talk) 14:16, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Add Dokdo(Liancourt Rocks)[edit]

Hello! NNW. I'm Korean Wikipedia user Albamhandae. I request the some works related to Korea&Japan location map. Dokdo(Liancourt Rocks) is the island ruled by South Korea. Japan claims the possession of this island. But, in File:Korea location map.svg and File:South Korea location map.svg on Commons, there is not Dokdo. Instead, there is Dokdo in Japan's map File:Japan location map.svg and File:Japan location map with side map of the Ryukyu Islands.svg, though Japan has not ruled Dokdo. I think these are so wrong. So, I hope you will edit these files. --Albamhandae (talk) 09:24, 22 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Also, add the dotted line to Dokdo in both Japan's maps(File:Japan location map.svg and File:Japan location map with side map of the Ryukyu Islands.svg) as same as Korea's maps. Thank you! --Albamhandae (talk) 12:15, 28 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
File:Japan location map zoom west.svg, too. --Albamhandae (talk) 12:23, 28 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Please ask User:Gdore first to do it. It is his map. NNW (talk) 12:25, 28 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Moin moin[edit]

Vielen Dank vorab!

Viele Grüße Thomas — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thomas Böhme (talk • contribs)

Moin!

Moin! Hast du ein Bildbearbeitungs- oder ein Vektorprogramm? NNW (talk) 17:41, 24 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nichts ausser MS-Paint.- Was empfiehlst Du als Software (freeware)?--Warboerde (talk) 19:03, 24 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

NNW (talk) 17:37, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Languages in Africa[edit]

Thank for your contribution of File:Official languages in Africa.svg. However, can other Bantu languages be added? Or, no Bantu languages other than Swahili, is an official language in any country in Africa?--Hello World! 17:12, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! It would have been impossible to show all official language in South Africa in the way this map is made (too many stripes, too complicated). There are other Bantu languages used in some countries (as far as I remember) but I would suggest that it would be better that someone creates a second map which only shows the official African languages.
