Hello, Nireekshit!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Location of parrot photograph

[edit]

Re: File:Indian Rose Ringed Parakeet..jpg. It is often easier to identify subspecies of animals when the location is provided. I would be grateful if you would write the location of the parrot in the image description for this photograph. Snowmanradio (talk) 18:14, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Comments Needs identification of species. Plus broken coordinates --A.Savin 18:01, 3 June 2016 (UTC). Corrected --Nireekshit No. You need the category. The file is not properly categorized. --A.Savin 02:20, 12 June 2016 (UTC) It is categorised as Amphibia. Kindly let me know what you imply by not categorised. Nireekshit First, please sign your comments completely, Nireekshit, with time stamp (four tildes). Second, Amphibia is a very unprecise category. Amphibia are not only frogs, but also snakes, lizards, tortoises etc.pp... How should one find your image, if it's only see at Amphibia category? And what about Category:Rhacophorus malabaricus? Before asking why I don't just put it myself there instead writing so many words, please consider: it is actually your turn as uploader to choose appropriate categories, because no one knows better than the photographer himself, what/where/how was taken. It is valid not only for what should be QI, but for ALL of your uploads! --A.Savin 13:38, 14 June 2016 (UTC) ✓ Done @Nireekshit: I have changed the category to the more precise Rhacophorus malabaricus so that the image can reach QI status. Next time, you need to ensure this yourself; it is too much to expect your reviewers to do all the work for you. --Peulle 15:48, 20 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
