Dear sir, I created the gallery measured seeds and last year there was a push to have images in both a Gallery and identical Category. I feel this ruins the classification system I enabled in the Gallery. You have done a great job with your images and as they each have their own Category, I removed Category:Measured seeds and left the images in the species category and the gallery measured seeds, Hoping you agree and understand the edits I have done, thanks WayneRay (talk) 03:25, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

is the proper name as well as the Gallery by the same name, I moved your category from Botanical Illustrations (which I mostly developed) to the Category above WayneRay (talk) 03:31, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Source information for maps[edit]

Hi there. I recently noticed that several of the range/distribution maps of various species (e.g. ticks) are not provided with valid sources of where the information for the map is derived from. This seems to be a rampant issue across many Wikipedia images. Too many maps of species distributions seem to be original research and have no sources presented. Could you help with resolving this issue since you have uploaded or edited several of these maps? I am particularly interested in finding the source material for the range of tick species since these articles are highly important for people researching into tick-borne infectious diseases at this time of year. Thanks for any help with this. 173.238.69.86 10:36, 12 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there, 173.238.69.86. Unfortunately I made those tick maps several years ago and I no longer remember where I got the information for the ranges. It is a lamentable oversight that I did not include my source information. I am now much more careful about that. I don't think this is where I got my information but you can take a look at the range map over at bugguide.net (here, follow the hyperlink) for the genus Dermacentor which has approximately the same information as some of my maps. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Ninjatacoshell (talk) 01:43, 16 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

I love your image of the white oak leaf (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Autumn_White_Oak_Leaf.jpg) and was hoping to use it in a book of my poems that is coming out next summer. I realize it's in the Creative Commons; however, it has the "Share Alike" license, I need to obtain written permission since the publisher would likely not issue the entire book with that license. Please let me know -- & thanks for the great pics! -Nate

xls/xlsx request[edit]

Hi. Do you still have the xls/xlsx file you used to create this chart? I want to update it to include 2010-2012 values. I tried to make it with MS Office but fail to divide it by colours like you did, and I didn't want to do it with paint =P. If you can, please upload it mediafire.com or somewhere and reply here. Thanks--Neo139 (talk) 00:14, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Neo139, I've regenerated his charts. I think the trick is that you need to make a "Democrat" column and a "Republican" column and use =SUMIF() to populate the columns, then each year that the president switches parties, you need an extra row that is slightly higher (eg: a row for year 2000 and a year for 2000.01) just to make the colored regions abut each other. Interestingly, even though your comment is over a year old, they still only have data through 2012 on whitehouse.gov. Everything beyond that is listed as "estimated".

Polygaleae/Polygalaceae[edit]

I noticed that you tagged File:Polygaleae distribution.svg as a duplicate of File:Polygalaceae distribution.svg. You are correct that they are the same file, so one should be deleted. However, File:Polygaleae distribution.svg is the file that should be retained because the source map only described Polygaleae. Therefore I moved the duplicate tag to File:Polygalaceae distribution.svg, since that is the file that should be deleted. Ninjatacoshell (talk) 22:00, 10 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

OK. I understand. Thank you. --►Cekli829 04:56, 11 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement[edit]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open![edit]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Thanks,

Update to Debt charts[edit]

Hi Ninjatacoshell! Thanks for making the various Debt charts. They're really informative. Since we have more data now (since we're a few years down the line), I'd be interested in helping to update the charts. I found the updated data for Debt as % of GDP by President and put it on the talk page. However, I'd be happy to help out with actual regeneration of graphs if you could give me some pointers. How did you get the areas under the lines to be different colors? I use Libre Office instead of Excel, but I imagine the nomenclature is the same. If there is a way to convince the charts to render like that, please let me know (or let me know if you just used an image program to do the coloring). Thanks again,
-SColombo (talk) 18:29, 5 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I figured out a way to generate the same style of chart in Google Spreadsheet (made a Democrat column and a Republican column, then populated them using =SUMIF() and made some overlap rows to make the colors abut each other. Will attempt to upload the new data.
-SColombo (talk) 20:04, 5 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@SColombo: That looks great, SColombo! While you're at it, do you mind updating Total debt by President, Debt as % of GDP by House Majority Party, Total debt by House Majority Party, Debt as % of GDP by Senate Majority Party, and Total debt by Senate Majority Party? Obviously maintaining these hasn't been a priority for me, so if you could do it that would be great. If you do make the changes, then I can migrate the namespaces so that they all say "(1940 to present)" instead of "(1940 to 2009)". Ninjatacoshell (talk) 04:47, 6 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Ninjatacoshell! I'm happy that you like them :) I started in on the Total debt by President chart tonight... turns out the new budget values have been released in the last week, so now the numbers for 2013 are finalized instead of estimated! I just finished making the Presidents chart on Google Spreadsheet and will upload the pic in a sec, but I'm not sure I'll have time to go through all of these. Maybe over the next couple of weeks I'll keep picking them off (and probably update the first chart to be through 2013 instead of 2012.

Biodiversity Hotspots.svg with borders?[edit]

Hi Ninjatacoshell, I´m Ökologix from the german Wikipedia (an my english is very bad ;-( I found your map „Biodiversity Hotspots.svg". Because I can´t draw in svg-files, I would like to ask you: Can you make a version of this very good map with white state-borders? I think it would be a good additional information! Thanks and greetings from Wuppertal --Ökologix (talk) 04:43, 17 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Ökologix: Hi Ökologix, I looked at the available blank .svg maps of the world with national borders and none of them have the same map projection as Biodiversity Hotspots.svg, so it would be a lot of work to add national borders to the existing file. To be honest, it's not a project that interests me. But if it matters to you, I encourage you to take the time to learn how to use Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape and do it yourself! Alternatively, you can ask someone at the Wikipedia map project to do it for you. Ninjatacoshell (talk) 15:42, 17 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
What a pity ... but thank you very much for the fast and friendly answer! --Ökologix (talk) 17:27, 17 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Robinsonian projection problem with your map[edit]

Hello, I've been trying to use your map: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Blank_Map_World_Secondary_Political_Divisions.svg#filehistory But looks like there are problems, as it doesn't seem to be in Robinsonian projection as opposed to what's stated. I.e. it cannot be fitted onto this map: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/96/Robinson_projection_SW.jpg/1920px-Robinson_projection_SW.jpg

Also, I've been trying to convert it to equirectangular projection with an assumption that it's robinsonian, and after projection, it doesn't fit equirectangular world maps as well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Byamarro (talk • contribs) 11:37, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Byamarro: That map is based on File:BlankMap-World.svg, which claims to be a Robinson projection. So if there is a problem, it lies there. Ninjatacoshell (talk) 19:15, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Map update request[edit]

Hi Ninjatacoshell - could you update your map File:Oxyura distribution.svg to incorporate the split of Oxyura ferruginea from Oxyura jamaicensis, please. See File:Oxyura jamaicensis & Oxyura ferruginea distribution.svg for comparison. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 18:28, 17 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@MPF: Hi MPF, I'd be glad to do that. Please provide the primary research article that formalized the nomenclatural changes so that I can include it in the updated description. Ninjatacoshell (talk) 18:48, 17 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks! From the IOC list (the taxonomy authority followed by Commons and Wikispecies for birds; scroll to near end of the list); also see e.g. Ridgely & Greenfield (2001), The Birds of Ecuador, Volume I. Status, Distribution, and Taxonomy and Jaramillo (2003), Birds of Chile. - MPF (talk) 20:06, 17 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@MPF: I've made the requested change. I also split "Oxyura jamaicensis & Oxyura ferruginea distribution.svg" into two separate files: File:Oxyura jamaicensis distribution.svg and File:Oxyura ferruginea distribution.svg. Ninjatacoshell (talk) 17:33, 24 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent, many thanks! - MPF (talk) 17:38, 24 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ninjatacoshell - another map update request, please; for File:Elaeagnaceae distribution.svg and File:Hippophae distribution.svg, could you extend the green area north up the east coast of Britain up to eastern Scotland, please, as Hippophae rhamnoides is native there. Reference: map at Den Virtuella Floran's Hippophae rhamnoides page (and also e.g. File:Sea-buckthorn, Kinshaldy, Fife - geograph.org.uk - 621762.jpg, geolocated photo at a native locality). Thanks! - MPF (talk) 09:12, 8 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Addenum - the 'ring' of distribution in Asia also needs to be stretched much further east, including Nepal, southern Tibet, and western and northern China to not too far from the Yellow Sea (again, as in Den Virtuella Floran's map) - MPF (talk) 17:58, 8 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
And addenum II (apologies for the multiple messages!), for the family map, the range should extend much more widely in eastern Asia, with Elaeagnus umbellata native in Japan, Taiwan, and much of mainland China: USDA (click on the 'Distribution' tab to see details). Thanks! - MPF (talk) 18:07, 8 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@MPF: Hi MPF, I'm really busy right now, so it might take me a while to get around to this. Don't hesitate to give me a nudge in a few weeks so that I don't forget about it. Also, it's going to be challenging to convert those polar projections to the Robinson projections I used for File:Elaeagnaceae distribution.svg and File:Hippophae distribution.svg. Also, since the USDA data is by region, I'm not sure how to combine that with a distribution map. In other words, you can represent distribution with a shape (like I've done for File:Elaeagnaceae distribution.svg and File:Hippophae distribution.svg). Or you can color regions based on presence or absence (the USDA data), but I don't see a way to do both. If you can find a map of the distribution of Elaeagnus umbellata, then I could incorporate that. Finally, there are other problems with the original source of the map. I live in the western United States and Elaeagnus angustifolia is very common here (see BONAP), but my original source shows very little presence of Elaeagnus in the United States. Ninjatacoshell (talk) 17:58, 18 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Will do. The important thing with transferring between different projections, is to be aware of the climatic and ecological requirements of the plant or animal being mapped ("Ah, this is an alpine species, so put it where the mountain ranges are", etc.) and then to map it to the areas where its requirements will be best met. With Elaeagnus angustifolia in the USA, that is as a non-native invasive species. Distribution maps generally only show native ranges, so Elaeagnus would not be mapped for North America at all, or if they do include non-native areas, do so in a different colour to indicate clearly it is not indigenous there (as in e.g. File:Sus scrofa range map.jpg). Hope this helps! - MPF (talk) 20:43, 18 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
