Hi there. I'm Neil Kandalgaonkar. You can call me NeilK, and that works for email (at wikimedia.org) and is my User: name in wikitext too.

From December 2009 - January 2011 I worked for the Wikimedia Foundation. I started as an engineer on the Usability Initiative, and now have an official title of "Multimedia Engineer", but I worked on all sorts of projects.

You can find out more about me at my MediaWiki.org user page, or my personal website, brevity.org.

Standard staff / contractor disclaimers[edit]

Unless otherwise stated, any edit to Wikimedia projects by me is an act of a regular member of the community and administrator, not a legal or official action of any agent of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Commons-specific note[edit]

As part of my job I tend to have to post a lot of test files (which should then be deleted relatively quickly) or try out other features of Commons. But I try to make sure that I don't harm the wiki permanently.

Problem with UploadWizard[edit]

Hi, I don't know, if you are the right person, but have a look at this image: [1]. This is, how the Upload Wizard looks like in Internet Explorer 7.0.5730.13C0 Polish edition, I have installed at work. There are two errors reported in JavaScript:

 • Special:UploadWizard, line 87: "'window.mediaWiki' jest pusty lub nie jest obiektem", that is "'window.mediaWiki' is empty or non-object".
 • Special:UploadWizard, line 10925 "oczekiwano identyfikatora, ciągu znaków lub liczby", that is "identifier, string or number expected".

Olaf (talk) 23:44, 21 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I got a 404 on that page. Are you using UploadWizard on your own wiki or is this on Wikimedia Commons? NeilK (talk) 14:57, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Changing the Picture of the Day for 2011-05-16 on the mainpage[edit]

Can you explain your edit and your comment in detail? [2] -- /人 ‿‿ 人\ 苦情処理係 12:17, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The comment is troubling given that the action could only be performed by virtue of your staff flag, as a representative of the Wikimedia Foundation. – Adrignola talk 12:24, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This is the first time I've acted in that way. I actually don't know what privileges are needed to edit the picture of the day. My understanding is that any other admin could revert me. If I've overstepped reasonable limits, and taken an action that was impossible / difficult to revert, that wasn't my intention. NeilK (talk) 12:58, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't consider it to be censorship (so I changed the title of this talk section). I think I just changed the picture that was highlighted on the front page. I think it makes the most sense if you read the thread in Commons-L. Long story short, a lot of people felt this image to be:
1) NSFW and therefore inappropriate for the front page.
2) Without educational merit. This is not a photo or illustration so it doesn't have the merit of corresponding to anything in the real world. Non-notable artist, not particularly great art.
3) Obviously of prurient interest only and veering on objectification of women -- the upvotes for this image included leering remarks about "big tits" . The defenses offered in the Commons-L thread were very weak, suggesting that it was "tribal" because the depicted (red-headed, doe-eyed) woman has a tattoo. Very bad for openness and for the gender gap that we have in participation.
I only regret that I couldn't find an equivalent, but more appropriate image. I realize this may seem like censorship since it was an image that had t3h b00bies, but I can tell you that for me at least, that was not a factor.
-- NeilK (talk) 12:34, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This is still no reason to censor art. -- /人 ‿‿ 人\ 苦情処理係 12:37, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you select File:Yahua Blowgun Amazon Iquitos Peru.jpg, which does not seem to be a featured picture? --Sushiya (talk) 12:44, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The arguments for keeping the original image was that it was "tribal". I wanted to underscore that I wasn't replacing the image for complaints of nudity or tribalism or whatever. It wasn't quite the perfect image, but it was close. NeilK (talk) 12:51, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Because it was shot without the permission by the depicted man. After many juristications it would need to be deleted. -- /人 ‿‿ 人\ 苦情処理係 12:49, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, are you saying it's inappropriate for Commons because we don't have such evidence, or inappropriate for the Main Page? NeilK (talk) 12:51, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Dear NeilK,
your changing is a very transparent action and has nothing to do with the facts that File:On the edge - free world version.jpg is (a) not a photo but an illustration and of course not because (b) it should supposedly has noting in common with the "real world". Please notice that first here is no difference between photographs and illustrations (seven days ago this illustration File:Animated gun turret.gif was picture of the day showing the principal of a "war machine") and second Anime is made by real existing persons and is seen and read by millions also real existing people. This picture stand representable for this typ of culture - independent if you like it or not. --Wladyslaw (talk) 12:53, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
 •  Comment I shall certainly be much more inclined to oppose art of this sort in FPC discussions if my fellow editors choose not to exercise restraint when it comes to the main page. The main page should appeal to the broadest range of the world demographic. "On the edge" fails that test, in my opinion. --24.18.247.90 17:33, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Browser version and operating system!?[edit]

"Your feedback will be posted publicly to the page "Prototype upload wizard feedback", along with your user name, browser version and operating system."

Why do you need to know my browser version and operating system??? I am running Windows 7 with 3 browsers: Internet Explorer 9, Firefox 5 and Chrome 12. Marthelati 10:27, 4 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Changing user rights[edit]

You have made User:Raindrift a sysop with no explanation to the community, no disclosure as to what this is for or for how long, rather than requesting a staff flag for this user at Meta. Your actions have been brought to the attention of administrators at Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard#Administratorrights_for_User:Raindrift. – Adrignola talk 14:09, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I responded in that thread, and in the meantime I have taken some actions to get staff rights for Raindrift. NeilK (talk) 15:54, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hello NeilK. I have commented in the AN. Not that I don't trust Raindrift, but global staff rights grants access to CU/OS stuff globally and if the user only needs the sysop toolkit on commons for developing stuff for commons I personally think global staff flag would be innapropiate. Notwithstanding as steward if the office says to grant staff access to Raindrift we will accomplish with that request. I've said the same in the AN: that Raind has sysop on commons does not disturb me at all. Best regards, --Dferg (talk) 17:52, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, NeilK!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File size limit[edit]

Hello,

I don't know if you are in charge of this, but I ask because you responded to the Village Pump discussion in November.

Is there any update on the file size limit? It is very frustrating, especially considering the large size of Theora videos compared to MP4, for example. Just recently, I had to reduce the quality of File:Yosemite Nature Notes 9 - Frazil Ice.ogv substantially, and I wanted to upload a high-quality Trip to the Moon, but cutting it into parts seems excessive considering its length. Is there any possibility of raising the limit before the technical improvements to, say, 400 MB?

Thank you. InverseHypercube 22:50, 26 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have a specific timetable for you because there are a number of balls in the air right now. Switching to new file storage backend and implementing chunked upload protocol. It seems to me that any raise in upload size will happen at the end of this quarter (March 2012) at the earliest. NeilK (talk) 00:16, 27 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thank you! InverseHypercube 03:09, 27 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Monocondylous archvillainy.jpg, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (:File:Monocondylous archvillainy.jpg).

If you created the content yourself, enter Own as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, GFDL or Cc-zero to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. Thanks for uploading File:Monocondylous archvillainy.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

File:Antigalactagogue ustilagineous.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
