Software used

Could you tell me what software you used to create the structures in svg format?

I recommend using ChemDraw to create chemical structures and reaction diagrams. As alternative there are freeware programs, like BKChem that lead to good results as well. But although BKChem allows direct SVG export, it requires intensive postprocessing in a texteditor. Using ChemDraw you can export your drawings either as PNG, which you need to vectorize afterwards using a vector graphics editor. Inkscape, a freeware program, is a good choice for that. The other way is to export the images from ChemDraw as EPS, which needs to be converted to SVG. This can be done using Adobe Illustrator, for example. Most likely you will have to postprocess those SVG files, which again can be done using Inkscape. ChemDraw also offers the possibility to export EMF and WMF, respectively. So if you have a possibility to convert those formats to SVG, this might be another alternative.
As an overview:
  1. BKChem -> (SVG) -> Texteditor -> (SVG) -> upload
  2. ChemDraw -> (PNG) -> Inkscape -> (SVG) -> upload
  3. ChemDraw -> (EPS) -> Illustrator -> (SVG) -> Inkscape -> (SVG) -> upload
  4. ChemDraw -> (WMF/EMF) -> ???
I hope this was helpful. --NEUROtiker 19:42, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Disputed chem

Hallo NEURO.

--Leyo 19:41, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
Richtig so! ;-). Die Formeln sind ersetzt. --NEUROtiker (talk) 20:43, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
Super, danke. Ich habe die Bapperl entfernt. --Leyo 22:06, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Structure of Cilofungin

I noticed that the chemical structure for cilofungin does not show any stereochemical detail although the IUPAC name and the peptide structure suggest there are many stereochemical centers to be specified in the structure. I understand that drawing this might be a time consuming task given the size and complexity of the structure. So would you mind if I exchange your drawing for one with stereochemical detail? --Krakatit (talk) 22:16, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Notice of namespace-rename "Image" -> "File"

Dear user, the MediaWiki developers recently announced that the "Image:" namespace is going to be renamed to "File:". "Image:" will remain an alias. The canonical namespace name wgCanonicalNamespace will change from "Image" to "File".

I noticed that you use wgCanonicalNamespace in either your monobook.js page or a JavaScript file in your userspace (check this list).

Please check and replace all occurrences of

wgCanonicalNamespace == "Image"

with

wgNamespaceNumber == 6

to ensure that your scripts keep working. Thanks! --Dschwen (talk) 18:41, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Deletion requests

Hi NEUROtiker, I have noticed that you've been nomination lots of poor-quality chemical structure diagrams for deletion. I think this is a good thing. But for images that have been in Category:Disputed chemical diagrams for more than a month without objection, I have been speedy deleting them to reduce the load at Commons:Deletion requests, since these deletions are uncontroversial. I'd suggest to save you the time of nominating these images, that you just let me know when there are images in that category that have been there for a month and I'll speedy delete them. Edgar181 (talk) 15:55, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

Hey Edgar181, I understand your point. The only thing I'm worried about if we delete those images without public announcement is, that the uploaders are passed over. I recently met a participant of the german wikipedia's chemistry project, who was very surprised that one of his images had been nominated for deletion, because he simply had not seen the disputed structure template. Without the automated message on his discussion page he wouldn't have noticed it at all. So I agree, that a regular nomination is not necessary but we should make notifying the uploader upon setting the template – as you are already doing it – mandatory. Regards, --NEUROtiker  20:10, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
Yes, notification will always being an issue, even for deletion discussion, because many users don't watch their Commons talk page. I just thought I'd make the suggestion. Cheers, Edgar181 (talk) 01:32, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
Don't get me wrong: I embrace your suggestion! Maybe I didn't make that clear in my last statement. I just think we should maybe add a line to the template saying: Please notify the uploader so he/she can correct the errors. The image will be deleted after 30 days without objection or similar. We could also create a template for notifiying the uploader similar to the the image deletion warning. --NEUROtiker  12:58, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

What do you think about this notification template: Template:Disputed chem/notification? As soon an image has been tagged, you can simple copy/paste the code displayed in the transcluded template onto the uploader's talk page. If you agree, I could do the same for Template:Disputed diagram and Template:Low quality chem. As a native speaker Edgar181 might improve my wording first. --Leyo 21:47, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

Such a template is exactly what I had in mind. Thanks. --NEUROtiker  19:51, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
I like the template, Leyo, and will use it whenever tagging images as disputed. Similar templates would be nice for the others as well, but I wouldn't require the use of notification where deletion is not an issue. Edgar181 (talk) 20:37, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
Done. --Leyo 22:00, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

I just made a modification in the template so that images not being edited for more than 30 days are listed in Category:Disputed chemical diagrams/expired. This allows a quicker look if there are any deletion candidates. I could create a similar subcategory for Category:Low quality chemical diagrams. --Leyo 22:00, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

Hallo NEURO. Deinen Kommentar kann ich nicht ganz nachvollziehen. Kannst du's nochmals anschauen? --Leyo 20:33, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

File:Image Curcumin structure Screenshot.png
--NEUROtiker  18:55, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
Danke für die Tipps. Ich werde diese bei nächster Gelegenheit ausprobieren. --Leyo 19:13, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

Image:Hydrochinon.svg

Hi NEUROtiker,

I'd like to use your rather excellent skeletal formula Image:Hydrochinon.svg in en:Hydroquinone, as it is much better than Image:Hydroquinone.svg.

Would you be prepared to make and upload a sideways version of Image:Hydrochinon.svg?

Best wishes

Ben (talk) 20:34, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi Ben, thanks for the compliment! I just uploaded the sideways version you wanted: Image:Hydrochinon2.svg. Cheers, --NEUROtiker  22:44, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

Fantastic, thank you very much. Your work is great, I can't praise you enough for your prolific and high quality contributions.

See you around
