It's OK now, right?

Really weird... the software is very arbitrary sometimes!! pfctdayelise (translate?) 08:05, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, are you interested in helping translate the interface into Vietnamese? For a start we could fix the upload page by having translations for MediaWiki:Licenses (just the bit after the pipe "|" in each line) and also MediaWiki:Uploadtext. And I noticed many of the menu items aren't translated, either. pfctdayelise (translate?) 08:09, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

See User talk:Pfctdayelise/Archive05.
Cool, thanks for the translations! I had to delete half of the licenses from vi.wp, since the Commons doesn't allow any fair use. I hope I figured them out OK. I have to figure out how to implement the other changes properly. Good luck with an updated file :) --pfctdayelise (translate?) 23:52, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How does it look? :D

The links at the bottom are a bit screwed up. Not sure what that's about. BTW if you (or anyone else) actually translates any of those pages into vi:, let me or another admin know and we can correct the URL. pfctdayelise (translate?) 14:39, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

State seal copyright[edit]

States do *not* own a general copyright in representations of their state seals, which may not make sense at first blush. However, please see Commons:Coats of arms. In general, most seals have a written description, and drawings made of that description are *not* derivative works of the description -- they each have an independent copyright as an individual expression of the same idea. All the representations share the idea, but they do not share any of the copyright. A drawing is never a derivative work of a literary copyright. In any representation, there is going to be artistic creativity in all of the small details which are not mandated by the general idea/description. These are the details which have a copyright; therefore each different drawing has a separate copyright, and we have find a license or PD rationale for each *representation*. While the general design of a state seal is in basically all cases very old (PD-1923), or published without a notice, and they are also all generally part of state law and thus uncopyrightable to begin with, that is basically irrelevant when it comes to the copyright of a specific representation. Therefore we can not simply take any representation we find; the copyright tags on each representation must relate to the history of that representation in particular. Someone can draw their own and license it CC-BY, or we can find a representation which was published without notice, or (in the case if the 1967 Ohio seal you just edited) it was a representation drawn by the U.S. federal government and is therefore PD-USGov. All of these (and more) are possible, but we cannot simply put a PD-old stamp on any an all seal representations. A file from Brands of the World might be a simple scan of a PD representation, or it might have a valid copyright that we cannot copy here. Carl Lindberg (talk) 18:43, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I just saw your rename request for File:MUTCD W7-1a.svg. I did a bit of research, and I could find this, it shows that the sign is W7-1a, and I couldn't find any W7-1b. Could you please give a source for this request? Thank you. Ahmadtalk 17:32, 26 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Ahmad252: I was going off the image description in Special:PermanentLink/346932855, but based on the source above, I think it actually is W7-1a. I requested the move because it seemed to conflict with File:MUTCD W7-1A.svg. But that image was based on the 2003 standard; looks like the "HILL" option had been removed by 2009. [1] We should move File:MUTCD W7-1b.svg back to File:MUTCD W7-1a.svg. It's worth keeping File:MUTCD W7-1A.svg around but probably under a different name like File:MUTCD W7-1a (old).svg. Thanks for double-checking! – Minh Nguyễn 💬 11:22, 29 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Adding to the confusion, SHS 2004 has "HILL" as W7-1a and the pictoral version with the 8% legend as W7-1b. [2][3] – Minh Nguyễn 💬 11:26, 29 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I also think it has been removed by 2009. SHS 2004 and 2009 edition both have W7-1 as the truck sign, but other signs have mostly changed. For example, W7-2 in SHS 2004 is W7-2P in 2009 edition, W7-2b is W7-2bP, W7-3 is W7-3P etc. Ahmadtalk 11:39, 29 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, I also moved the file back to W7-1a. I also agree about File:MUTCD W7-1A.svg and the confusion it might cause, but I'm not sure if we should move it to another name or not, so I just leave it be for now. Ahmadtalk 11:41, 29 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Dividing stations by county[edit]

I don't really see the value in dividing BART and Caltrain stations by county. At that's done is add an extra category layer that doesn't provide any real benefit. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 21:03, 14 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Pi.1415926535: There were already a few categories dividing BART and other Bay Area rail stations by city, while on the English Wikipedia the navboxes were sorting them by county, so I was just trying to put in something between the city and state levels. Category:BART stations in Santa Clara County, California is admittedly a bit barren and will be for some time, but the other categories have more members. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 06:16, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I do see your point. However, the most common use case is probably going from the BART stations category to an individual station, in which case this just adds an extra step. As you're probably aware, there's a lot of debate on Commons over when to create intersection categories; I tend to fall on the "only when necessary or particularly useful" end. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 22:20, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Pi.1415926535: Until now, I was only aware that different users go to different lengths to categorize, but I didn't know there's actual controversy over categories that intersect only two facets. For the BART stations, I was actually thinking of adding a parallel set of categories by line, since that's how I normally navigate among the stations. For example, Category:Milpitas station would be a member of Category:Berryessa/North San José–Daly City line and Category:Berryessa/North San José–Richmond line, in addition to Category:BART stations in Santa Clara County, California. Should I reconsider that in light of your concerns? – Minh Nguyễn 💬 22:50, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, the biggest arguments have been over time+geography intersection cats (ie Category:2020 in CITYNAME). I've thought about making categories for the lines before, but I held off because the "lines" are really named services, so all those categories would contain are "XYZ line stations" and "XYZ line trains" (the latter requiring a lot of identification work). I have already made Category:BART lines for the infrastructure segments. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 23:03, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ohio road signs[edit]

Greetings. You recently uploaded several road signs from Ohio sourced to the OMUTCD. However, when I tried to access it, it turns out to be protected behind a login. May I ask how you were able to access it? I would love to view the documents and add them to my collection. Fry1989 eh? 17:20, 29 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Fry1989: That's odd, I'm able to access it without any authentication. Are you able to access the PDFs from the SDMM portal or the ODOT homepage? ODOT recently redesigned their website, and it was completely unusable until a couple weeks ago, so maybe this is still growing pains.

Incidentally, I was about to ask for your help with OMUTCD road signs. I've been cataloguing these signs on the OpenStreetMap Wiki to help mappers learn how to tag signs that they encounter in street-level imagery and also develop new tagging standards based on Ohio-specific signs. It would be tremendously useful if Commons had the full set of SVGs. Unfortunately, my Inkscape skills haven't progressed far beyond basic text placement. The lane use diagrams are making my head hurt. I'd be very grateful for any help you could provide, once we figure out why you're unable to access the specifications.

 – Minh Nguyễn 💬 19:56, 29 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your response, and how funny that you also intended to contact me. I first tried the source link on File:Ohio MUTCD R3-H4b.svg, but when I click on it it does ask for a login and password. I then did a Google search and found that ODOT appears to have a web-app, but when I click to launch that, I also get a request for a login. And the same issue is happening once again when I click your link for the SDMM portal. I was trying to think of what could possibly cause this issue for me and not for you, and finally I figured it out. I have an HTTPS Everywhere extension in my internet browser. Once I turned it off, the links work fine. Very strange.
Now that that is out of the way, I would be happy to help where I can. The US is so extensive with their signs, with varying federal and state variations, that it is a long-term exercise and I imagine I will be working on the US for years to come. I can give you pointers in Inkscape, and also create various signs myself. I'm very happy to see a new road signs enthusiast on Commons. We're a very small community, but it is nice to have friends. Fry1989 eh? 20:25, 29 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again. You seem to be doing well with the lane use signs so far. I do have a small proposal that you may or may not agree with in regards to file naming. Since all the federal signs are named "MUTCD XXXX", I've started renaming many of the state variations to use this, followed by the state USPS and ISO abbreviation; for example Californian signs are named "MUTCD-CA XXXX". This would allow the signs to sort alphabetically and group together naturally. Would you be willing to adopt this for your signs as well? Fry1989 eh? 18:50, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Fry1989: Sure, I'm open to that. I think search result quality won't be impacted too much since all the file descriptions already spell out "Ohio". It will result in some redundancy, such as "MUTCD-DE W21-7-DE" for Delaware signs, "MUTCD-NY NYR2-2" for New York signs, and "MUTCD-OR OR3-10a" for Oregon signs, but it wouldn't be a problem for Ohio signs. (Ohio is one of a few states that place a letter like H or X after the hyphen instead of using a state abbreviation in the sign code.) Just let me know when the changeover happens so I can stay consistent with my uploads. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 19:35, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The duplication for some states would be slightly annoying, I agree. I am open to any alternatives you can think of as well. Otherwise, since I have file mover rights, I can rename and replace the signs you have already uploaded, and then you can continue uploading as normal. Fry1989 eh? 19:46, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Fry1989: I take it the current pain is around making the category listings more navigable? I'm not personally affected by it much, but I can understand that someone who works with these files a lot would find it nice to have some predictability. For now, the only alternative I can think of is to use sorting keys, but unfortunately the upload wizard doesn't seem to support adding sorting keys directly. I'm hopeful that at least some of the ideas in mw:Community Wishlist Survey 2021/Results/Categories will be tackled eventually, making us less reliant on file naming conventions that are inherently fragile (since they aren't baked into the upload interface). Anyways, it looks like you've already starting this naming convention for some states, so no objection to doing it for Ohio too. Thanks for the heads-up! – Minh Nguyễn 💬 19:54, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The only other alternative I know of to keep related signs grouped together, aside from a naming convention, is to add it to the categories manually. So, for example, File:British Columbia R-009-1.svg and File:Ontario Rb-19.svg are both in the No Entry signs category as [[Category:Diagrams of No Entry road signs|Canada]], otherwise they would categorise alphabetically and be very far apart. I'll have to try and fix the Canadian signs in the future as well. It's easier when signs are part of a national standard and the naming convention I put in place several years ago "Country road sign XXXX", but with varying regional signs it is a bit more tricky. I'll give you a little more time to think it over, but if you don't have any further objections, I can start renaming your uploads later today and let you know when the process is complete. Fry1989 eh? 20:21, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Fry1989: I think the MUTCD-XX scheme you proposed above is fine. (Besides, relying on sorting keys is problematic because you have to manually edit a file description page after uploading.) I'll probably end up creating more specific categories for Ohio signs anyways, because some of these series (like R3-8) have a lot of Ohio-specific signs. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 20:36, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I believe I have finished. Let me know if I missed anything. Fry1989 eh? 02:02, 31 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Fry1989: Thanks for taking care of all the renaming. Do you think it would be possible to leave redirects on some of them, especially the non-lane files that had been around a bit longer? These files have been linked quite a bit outside the Wikimedia wikis, particularly on the OSM Wiki but also on non-wikis that are more difficult to edit after the fact. I'm trying my best to track down existing usage, but I'm sure to miss something. Is it just a matter of adding a normal #redirect at the file description page, or is there anything special about file redirects that would be necessary for InstantCommons to pick up the files elsewhere? – Minh Nguyễn 💬 02:05, 31 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I don't like re-directs. I see them as clutter. However, you do have a very valid argument that there is off-wiki usages that may be disrupted, so I am going to have to learn to get over it. To add a re-direct, you just go to the former namespace (for example) and add "#REDIRECT [[File:]]" with the current name. Fry1989 eh? 15:54, 31 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks for understanding. It'll just be a few for the files that have been around longer. I don't plan on adding redirects systematically. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 19:41, 31 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello anh Minh, if you have any time to spare, please consider create a high-quality svg version of this file. Being the first anniversary logo ever of the Vietnamese Wikipedia, it bears a special sentimental meaning to the project. The simplicity in the design also makes it versatile and can be used on different occasions, which is why I used it on the community portal. But I think having an SVG high-quality version is still better though. Băng Tỏa (talk) 19:18, 6 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Băng Tỏa: Indeed, I had originally designed the image to be generic but elegant, with the intention of reusing it on multiple milestone occasions. (Nothing against the later logo variants; I had no idea the puzzle ball could be modified in so many creative ways!) I can try to make a higher-quality version, but should it combine File:Balloons-aj.svg with File:Wikipedia-logo-vi, 2005-2009.png or File:Wikipedia-logo-vi-big.png, to be historically accurate, or with File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-vi.svg or File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-no-text.svg to be more versatile in non-historical contexts such as the community portal? Unfortunately, there isn't a good SVG version of the v1 project logo, only approximations. (This is also true of the original English version of the logo. It's one of the reasons the Foundation cited for replacing it with the more clinical v2 design in 2010.) – Minh Nguyễn 💬 20:18, 6 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Anh Minh, thank you so much for such a quick reply. I had no idea it was part of your original intention. I used it on the community portal because I found both its design and its author to be adorable. This time I want it to be versatile, so SVG format is a must. Let’s make it based on the new version of the Wikipedia logo. The sentimental historical meaning would still be reserved so long as it contains the balloon pic. It probably should be created as a separate file also. Băng Tỏa (talk) 21:04, 6 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Caltrans Adopt-A-Highway logo.svg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Two-way concurrencies[edit]

What exactly do you mean by this? The name is vague and probably should be reconsidered. Two-route concurrencies? Two-direction concurrencies? Please consider making it more clear. Famartin (talk) 16:51, 16 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Famartin: Yes, I was referring to two-route concurrencies, as part of Category:Concurrencies by number. If I'm not mistaken, this is the usual term for concurrencies that consist of two routes. I created a separate Category:Wrong-way concurrencies for concurrencies where the routes go in opposite directions. Minh Nguyễn 💬 21:52, 16 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You would be mistaken. A "way" would be the cardinal direction... north, south, east or west. That's why a "wrong way" concurrency is a thing... one ROUTE goes NORTH, the other goes SOUTH (or one goes EAST while the other goes WEST) while simultaneously following a single road in the same direction. I've therefore renamed the categories the make it more clear what you are thinking of. Famartin (talk) 22:22, 16 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Renaming files after MUTCD 11[edit]

It is unclear to me what the "(IA-16)" in your rename request for File:MUTCD R10-10b.svg is in reference to. It would make more sense to me to rename the file "MUTCD R10-10b (????–2023)", if we can find the year of introduction. Fry1989 eh? 23:06, 24 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Fry1989: This sign was introduced in Interim Approval 16 in 2013. However, it never made it into an edition of the MUTCD or SHSM, so it was always provisional, only approved for use by these 81 highway departments. There's some precedent for naming IAs in individual route shields' file names, such as File:US Bike 23 (M1-9 IA-15).svg, but I wouldn't oppose naming it File:MUTCD R10-10b (2013–2023).svg, since we can always clarify the provisional status in the file description. Minh Nguyễn 💬 23:14, 24 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
